Kandiah Sivaloganathan, and Bruce Bodinnar.
The school fence is almost complete. After a request by the school that they reconstruct our gate, we elected to keep what we have, and maybe give it another coat of paint.
Patrons Day proved yet another success, with our benevolent Patron contriving novel games to play, and distributing largesse.
We should have several weeks of relative quiet as the school is on holidays, and Scott and Snowy are having a break from the many balls which now come through the new fence during term.
Coming up this month we have Womens’ Top 5, Graded 4’s, Mufti singles, Open Day 20th, and the Mayoral Trophy at Warringah.
Have a great October,
hanks to the many members who attended the recent AGM. Congratulations to those members elected to the Board.
Congratulations to Jeff Hole on becoming a Life Member of our Club. A hugely deserved honour for one of our most generous servants.
Shortly refurbishment work will commence on the Ladies Powder Room. We are sure it will be well received, and it should be completed by the end of October. Interim arrangements are in place.
Congratulations to our triumphant women in the North Harbour championship. See Cathy’s report for more details. Mid- week challenges are now finalised, and our 3 teams are to be congratulated on their performances against skilled opponents in tough conditions.
Also congratulations to the finalists in the hard fought Men’s Triples Championship, won by Stephen Lewis,

challenges of competition bowling.
One of our Districts most challenging events is the St Ives Trophy, which we won last year. Judy Moyes, Sue Addison, Loyce Davis, Betty Anne Cleveland and Jenny Hole competed against the better bowlers in our District. Although not successful this year , it's always a good day out.
Loyce Davis was our club’s representative in the Anita Linden Trophy played on Monday 23 September. This event is between Region 15 (Manly-Warringah/North Shore Districts) and Region 16 (Mitchell & Macquarie Districts). Congratulations to our District winning 244/176.
Finally, I have been elected as a Director of the Mosman Bowling Club. This will ensure that the Women’s Club will be well represented and any issues that arise will be dealt with directly. The upgrade of the ladies powder room will commence on 14 October and architects are drawing up the plans for the renovation of the auditorium.
If anyone has any small cane baskets lying around the house I would appreciate you donating them to the club. They are used for making small gourmet hampers for raffle prizes.
would like to congratulate Lyn Adam on her Life Membership. Lyn has been an outstanding member since joining in 1996. Working on various committees as Treasurer, Vice President and currently Membership which is the portfolio for which Lyn has done so well for so long. When the old Mosman Bowling Club closed down Lyn and 35 other members joined our Club and this was a major contributing factor to the success of the club today.
Our club had a big win at the North of the Harbour Trophy on the 13th S e p t e m b e r – e q u a l 1 s t . Congratulations. The team of Sue Buchanan, Rosemary Dale, Loyce Davis and Ailsa Maccallum and the other team of Edwina Legg, Betty Anne Cleveland, Tosh Czinege and Barbara Anderson played brilliantly – winning three of the four games to come equal first. The very impressive trophy is in the club for six months. The Trophy was played on the rain date and as many of the original members were not available, the team was formed at the last moment and they won.
We have Rosemary Dale and Sally Thomson playing in the District Major/Minor pairs at present. It is good to see one of our newer members, Sally, back after her knee surgery and enjoying the
I
toilets. The men will have exclusive use of the two toilets at the back of the club, via the path behind the greenkeepers shed.
The works should take 3 weeks.
Members are encouraged to participate in all club events, and especially Twilight mufti bowls on Fridays at 4 pm., and also Saturday morning bowls once the annual green refurbishment commences.
Our AGM was well attended on 15 September, and 9 Directors were duly elected. New Board members Cathy Wilson and John Candy were welcomed and have been allocated the portfolios of Sponsorship/Publicity/Social (Cathy) and Membership Retention (John), respectively. Gay Suters has moved to New Membership Acquisition. Other portfolios remain the same as last year.
Several matters raised at the AGM have been addressed by the Board.
The green gate at the Gouldsbury St entrance will be retained.
Whilst our finances are sound, a long term review of our finances is to be conducted over the next few months, to accommodate operating expenses, and refurbishments.
We remain conscious of our parking difficulties, and maintain a proactive approach to adjust and improve our parking situation. Further suggestions are welcome.
Fran Luna will be leaving us after 10 years of faithful service. She and her family are moving to Grafton, and we wish her well.
Refurbishment works are due to commence to the Ladies Powder Room on 14 October. The ladies will have exclusive use of the Uni-sex bathroom as well as the mens

The 2018 Triples Champions George Lindsay, Snowy Kable and Scott
Denham have been defeated by Stephen Lewis, Kandiah Sivaloganathan
and Bruce Bodinnar in a thrilling Final played last month. It was a real
"hare and tortoise" game in that the defending Champs got away to a
brilliant start, leading 16-4 after the 11th end and looking comfortable.
The challengers then began a long fight back, winning 12 of the
remaining 14 ends - going into the penultimate end they were just 1 shot
down, and a 4 and then a 2 in those last 2 ends saw them eventually
winning by 5 shots, 24-19.
Congratulations to all 6 bowlers on a cracking Final !
Tell us a little about yourself – family, career before retirement, hobbies/ sports played etc.
I was born in Mudgee in Central Western NSW. My parents had a sheep and wheat property between Mudgee and
Wellington.
My father was born and bred in Turramurra, went to an Agricultural High School and did his Jackerooing at Barellan in the Riverina District. My mother was born in Grafton and the family later moved to Mudgee where my Grandfather was a Solicitor. After she left school she worked as a Governess at
Narrabri.
I had a sister who was 3 years older than me, but she passed away from Cancer in 2016. My parents both came from large
families so I have 22 cousins spread over NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
Our home life was happy. We had home grown eggs, meat and vegetables, and some fruit. Bread was delivered three times per week, and we rode our horses to a little Post Office to
collect the mail.
There was no electricity or hot water and it was our job to collect the eggs, chips for the fuel
stove and chip heater in the bathroom, and feed the pet lambs when required.
During WW2 we had two Italian Prisoners of War staying in our Shearer’s Huts. They were sent out from Cowra to work on the farms. One of them was a Plumber and made us a pedal car out of old Kerosene tins. We have often wondered if they ever came back to Australia after
the war ended.
Our Primary education was by Correspondence lessons as there was no such thing as school buses and we were 34 miles from Mudgee. We had to be 6 before we could start school so there was no such thing as Pre-School or Kindergarten. From 5th class onwards we went to PLC Pymble as Boarders for 6 years. Three of our cousins were also there as Day girls.
Boarding was very strict with one free Saturday and two free weekends each term.
In 1949 my parents sold the property and moved to Cudal in the Orange district. We lived in the Shearer’s quarters (again with no electricity or hot water) as there was no house on the property which had been divided up. Electricity was connected in the early 1950’s. A new house was built later on and we moved in for Christmas 1956. I spent one year at the Cudal Public School before going to PLC. In later life my parents took up breeding Turkeys (in addition to sheep,
wheat and cattle) which was very successful.
After leaving school, I did a Shorthand and Typing course at Ultimo Tech. It was a two year course but I only did one as I wasn’t using it at work. I worked at the AMP in the
Superannuation Division for 42 years and retired in 1998.
When I retired I became a Volunteer at Crows Nest Community Centre for about 5 years doing
Meals on Wheels and taking people to medical appointments.
I have enjoyed playing Social Tennis, have had several trips both Overseas and within Australia. and of course, Bowls. Due to health problems I have been unable to play Bowls for some time,
but hope to get back to it in the near future.
I remember one weekend when I was at home, shearing had just finished and it turned very cold and snowed which was most unusual. Dad and the man who worked for him had tried to get the sheep into the shed where they would be under cover, but the sheep would not co-operate. The next day Dad and I went out to find out how many sheep had died. It was very sad as at least 200 had died from the cold. City people don’t realize the problems that farmers have with the
financial loss apart from droughts.
I am Honoured and delighted to have been made a Life Member of Mosman Bowling Club at the
recent AGM.
How were you introduced to Lawn Bowls, and why Mosman BC? I was introduced to bowls by a friend and joined Mosman WBC near Mosman Private Hospital. (At this time there were 3 Bowling Clubs in Mosman). This club closed down in 1997 and about 36 of us transferred to Mosman. Sadly, most of the 36 have now passed away. I have lived in the Mosman/Cremorne area for a long time so it was an easy decision to join Mosman Bowling
Club.
Which was your most memorable win, and why? My most memorable win was reaching the final of the Major Singles in 2015, but Judy Moyes came out the winner. I was also in the winning team for the District Pennants G4 in 2000 and
G2 in 2007, but we didn’t get to the State Play Offs.
What do you particularly enjoy about Lawn Bowls? Lawn Bowls is always a challenge as so much depends on the weather and greens and playing with different people each time. I enjoy the challenge and we are very fortunate to have good
greens.
How would you like to see Mosman BC develop or improve further? The main problem at MBC is the lack of parking and some people from other clubs do not like coming to Mosman because of this. If Woolworths comes to Mosman, no doubt the parking will be worse. It is a happy and well run Club and we need to continue to attract and retain New
Members.
Finally, what advice do you have for new bowlers?
If you want to succeed, practice as often as possible using both forehand and backhand. Get to
know the rules and etiquette. Become an Umpire or Volunteer in due course.

The 5th Centenarians' Gala, a
tournament featuring Sydney Metropolitan
Bowling Clubs 100 years or more old, was hosted by the
Randwick BC in September. Randwick is celebrating its 125th
anniversary this year, so it was fitting that they should host this
particular event. The brainchild of our late friend and colleague Peter
McAdam, the Centenarian's Gala Day continues to be enjoyed by the
12 invited clubs.
This year each club fielded a Mixed Fours team, and Mosman was
represented by Cathy Wilson, Gay Suters, Harry Evans and John Rock.
The event consisted of 3 games of 7 ends followed by a delicious
luncheon - Mosman's opponents were Manly, Randwick and Warrawee
and we had mixed results!
The overall winner this year was North Sydney, with Warrawee the
runner-up.
These new items are now available at the Bar -

Beanies $15.00
All sizes of women's and men's club shirts and jackets are
now in stock.
2019 NORTH OF THE HARBOUR CUP (JOINT WINNERS)
Friday the 13th was definitely not an unlucky day for the Mosman side
competing in Mona Vale’s club-select North of the Harbour Cup on Friday 13
September.
Another trophy now resides for twelve months in our club.
The two Mosman teams of Edwina Legg, Betty Anne Cleveland, Toshiko
Czinege, Barbara Anderson and Sue Buchanan, Rosemary Dale, Loyce Davis
and Ailsa Maccallum competed in two two-bowl fours matches.
Our teams shared the win jointly with Seaforth as a clear winner could not
be determined. At the end of the day both clubs had three wins each with
one loss, the same number of bonus points, the exact same margins, the same
number of ends won. As a result Mona Vale declared joint winners.
Seaforth, who had won the trophy outright last year, very graciously gave
the trophy to Mosman to display for the full twelve months.

Is it a bowl that goes out of bounds?
No - that is a wasted bowl.
Is it a wrong bias? No - that is an
expensive bowl.
Is it a bowl that gives the shot to your
opponents. No - that is an unfortunate
bowl.
The answer is a Short bowl. Which is a
bowl more than half a metre short of the
jack.
Short bowls are of no use to your team,
especially if they are in the drawing
lanes locking a hand and creating an
obstacle for other players to reach the
jack. Short bowls can also block
weighted shots stopping a team’s ability
to attack the head effectively when
required.
If you are having difficulty reaching the
head, then try
bowling to a
p o in t o n e
metre behind
the jack. If you
reach th is
point you have
a useful bowl,
and if you are
short of this
point you will
be near the
jack.
Our coaches have been busy with lots of customers as a result of our
last Open Day, so there will be quite a few new members on our greens
in the next few months. Please be patient and encouraging while they
learn the ropes. If their delivery needs attention it’s best to leave that to
their coach - it gets a bit confusing if too many people get involved. It would be helpful however,
especially if you’re their mentor, if you could kindly point out some of the ins and outs of bowls
etiquette as the game goes along.
There will be circuit training on 1st, 15th and 29th October. A few of you are also taking
advantage of the courses being offered by Zone 9. Bowls Australia will be running a course for
Club Coaches at Mosman on Sunday 12th and Sunday 19th of January. Let me know if you’re
interested.
Jeff Hole is back in charge for the next few weeks while I’m overseas.
Thanks to Brian Spear for his Coaching Tip for this month!
