One of the most awaited events of the year is Home coming. Everyday began with the dress that was based on the Homecoming theme. The Home coming theme was game boards. On Tuesday because there was no school on Mon-day due to Labor Day, the dress was Clue. Seniors were 1st with 20 points followed by the Juniors with 15 points, then the Sophomores with 10 points, and the Freshmen last with 5 points. In the old gym, students participated in the dodge ball competition. It began with the Freshmen vs Seniors where Seniors beat the the Freshmen. The Juniors beat the Sophmores. Throughout the entire competi-tions, the Sen-iors got the highest score.

The evening activity was volleyball be-tween Hoehne and Swink. Swink Lions won that game.

Wednes-day’s dress was charcters from Candy Land. The scores for dress were the same as Tuesday. Due to early release at 2 p.m., there was no afternoon ac-tivity. The evening activity was street paint-ing 5:00 – 7:00 and building of the floats.

Students worked on floats and when they fin-ished they went to street painting. Freshmen had the part of the street in front of the Com-munity Center. Sophomores had the street in-front of the Mayors Apartments. Juniors had the rest of the street to the South. Seniors had the street to the North of the old gym. School pride and the theme of this years home coming of game boards were expressed on the street in white wash paint.

The Parade The parade was held on September 5th. The whole school and residents of both Swink, La Junta, and Rocky Ford lined up on the street to help make this parade a memorable one. It happened through the main street in Swink.

The parade was there to help boost morality for the following football game that night.

The pep rally helped recognize all the fall players in all the fall sports. It also helped the

kids feel more excited about the homecoming pa-rade against the McClave Cardi-nals. Some of the emotions in the parade was ex-citement, happi-ness and even some joyful tears.

Even though it was on a gloomy and cool day, people were still very excited.

Royalties

There was quite hard to pick a winner for this year’s 2014 Homecoming Royalties. The event was held last September 5, Friday night at the homecoming football game. The royalties were presented. The candidates were (Girls): Becca Smith, Sammi Rodriguez, Heather Estrada, Leah Roberson. (Boys): Seth Mills, Walter Tucker, Danel Tucker, Jadon Valdez-Barela and Dominic Mondragon. Every candidate looked nice and beautiful walking out there. Seth Mills and Becca Smith emerged as the Royalties during that night.

The Lions football team are on a rough start to the sea-son. They are getting better and better every game. As of this writing, Lions are 1-4, but they have played some pretty high ranked teams. The loss to Granada was the first loss. Our homecoming week was a loss to Mcclave. Then, the next week was against Custer County which was a very close game.

The Lions have a lot to build on, but the football teams plan is that they can do it if they try hard. The

Lions need the support from the students and the commu-nity of Swink. The team is very determined to win and have a successful year.

The football team has two new coaches. They have helped out a lot. Coach Brewer is the defensive coor-dinator. Coach Amherein just helps out. He has brought tires and telephone poles for us to condition.

The Swink team has been working hard and i think it will pay off for them.

They will get better over the time of the season. These three losses they have don’t matter to them, they are willing to do anything to win. Winning is the only choice for them now.

They have been prac-ticing from 3:50 to 6:30. They have put a lot into this football team and now is the time to show off their skills and efforts. If the Lions do well and win they can take 3rd in their league and hope-fully go to the playoffs.

their best effort. We won 25-10 then 25-15 and 25-12. We bumped set and spiked our way to victory with little mistakes. Also if you ask me I have just a feeling that we are on a straight path to state cham-pionship.

The homecoming volleyball game on September 4th was a wonderful win! They won all three games with the final game which scored 25-12. Which pushes them to 1st in their league.

The Rocky game was very intense at first but the lady lions bounced back and demolished them even with

school districts in Colorado. This goal would not have been reached without our excellent staff and incredi-ble students. Within the next month, the Swink School District will be re-ceiving a banner. Some benefits to the students and staff are the boost of confi-dence and that warm feel-

the drills. The only thing that we needed to work at was that we needed to be quiet during the evacuation drill.

During the evacuation drill, all the stu-dents got out of 6th hour and went to the Baptist church. The junior high students quietly went to the front of the church, while the high school went to the back.

Swink School District conducted emergency drills during the first few weeks of September. These drills were held so we know what to do in case of emergencies. Mrs. Hiza, Mr. Redner and Mrs. Westfall were the ones that organized these drills.

Some people may think that the drills are not practical, but they are for everyone's safety. Mrs. Hizasaid that we did well during

On September 19, the Swink School District hosted an awarding ceremony to recognize the students that got advanced in TCAP or lettered in academics. They gave free hot dog, chips, fruit, and drinks to all those who came to the event. Friends, families and staff gathered together to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

During the halftime at the football game, Mr. Scott Goheen an-nounced the names of students who achieved highest and improved scores on TCAP.

TCAP is a state required tests that shows how much you learned from last year to the present time. TCAP is very important because it shows growth.

School.

Later in the month on Friday the 26 the officer induction ceremony has held at 7:30 in the con-ference room. Those who were inducted where the members who had been elected into an office at the end of last year. Shelby Winter was a wonderful Induction Advisor and

kindly took part in the ceremony by introducing each new officer and swearing them into their office. Those who were inducted were as fol-lowed: Devin Camacho as President, Rebecca Smith as Vice President, Leah Roberson as Secretary,

Kyrah Guerin as Reporter, Sam Bartolo as Treasurer, Bethann Traver as Historian, Kellie Hirakata and Austin Adame as Co STUGO Repre-sentatives, and Josh Knaben-shue and Tyler Horiuchi as Co Community

Serves Chairs. After eve-ryone was inducted a short reception was held.

“FBLA is ready for an amazing year!” said Devin, “this is only the be-ginning.” Devin is right; FBLA truly has another in-credible year ahead!

FBLA is kicking off its year with a very busy, action packed month! The club FBLA, or Future Business Leaders of America, has officially begun its 2014-2015 year. The club has many plans to make this the best year for FBLA yet. FBLA also welcomes its new adviser Mr. Angelito Bal-boa! So far FBLA has had two very im-portant events.

On Wednes-day the 17 FBLA held its first general meeting of the year. This meeting was held with the purpose of recruiting mem-bers. In the days prior to the event posters were hung, and announcement were given dur-ing forth hour warning students of the approaching date. The advertising worked and there was an excellent turn out! Many students ranging from grades 9th through 12th attended with hearts set on joining the club. After a brief summation of the clubs

The Swink Youth in Community Service (SYCS) conducted a blood drive last September 22 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. here at Swink School. The organizers required donors to be 16 years or older and 115 pounds or more. They also advised the donors to eat healthy meals and drink a lot of water.

This year was a great turn out because there were 23 out of 27 people who donated blood. Compared to last year, there were only 17 donors who donated. The organizers hope to keep get-ting more and more donors.

They are as follows, Becca Smith- President, Vice President- Devin Camacho, Secretary- Kyrah Guerin, Treasurer- Sam Bartolo, and Scholar-ship Chair- Kellie Hira-kata. We have approxi-mately 30 members, with plans to induct new mem-bers later on this year.

The plans of NHS for this year are to participate in fundraisers (mostly conces-sion stands) to raise money for the NHS schol-arship given to a qualified senior at the end of the year. NHS members are also planning few commu-nity service projects, which they are still deciding on.

Swink’s Fall play, to be produced November 14-16, 2014.

Basic info- When the owner of a small local television sta-tion decides to jump on the bandwagon and produce his own reality show, sparks fly about the million-dollar prize. Harold Fastbuck sees an opportunity to make millions with the TV show, which casts the haughty Tuttle Tons of Park Avenue, New York, with the down-home Hatter family of Hog Holler, Kentucky. The families think they only have to live together in the Hatter cabin for a month, but unbe-knownst to them, they must also endure a series of chal-lenges.

Extra info- Being the lying cheater that he is, Fastbuck in-tends to make the challenges increasingly impossible so the million dollars cannot possibly be won. Yet the desperate Tuttletons and simple Hatters comically endure everything thrown at them, including exchanging clothes and accents, to the final, ultimate test. Add in to the mix a young direc-tor fresh out of school; two obsequious producers; an eld-erly, egotistical emcee; and a compilation of all known reality shows for an evening of absolutely real laughter.

For complete listing of the cast members, see page 8.

Rebecca Smith by: Jai Patel Rebecca Smith is a brilliant student at Swink, her biggest fear is not reaching her goals. Her role model is Jesus. She partici-pates in volleyball, golf, drama,FBLA, SYCS, and Operation Smile. Outside of school her interests are hiking, biking, fam-ily, traveling, and shopping. Her favorite quote is “Peace comes to those who let go.” She explained that this is her favorite quote because you need to leave the past in the past. An interesting fact about Re-becca is that she has a sweet phone case. The animal that best describes her is the grumpy cat because she says it is awe-some. Her parents are Conni Smith and Todd Smith. Her motto in life is “smile and let everyone know that today you were yesterday”. (good motto) If she could visit another country she chose Italy because of it’s rich history.

Seth Henderson Mills by: Jadyn Bevington Seth is in football, wrestling, and FBLA. His hobbies include sports, hunting, and being awesome.his Favorite things are Food and sports. and hopes that students will learn a lot about it.

Mrs. Mindy Blasingame

She graduated from this school in 2005 and she has a kid in kindergarten. She stays here in Swink and has been teaching for only a year. She likes the good education and how small the school is. It is also one of the best schools and she is espe-cially proud to be apart of the community. She gradu-ated at Adam’s State.

nice and they compliment the work he does and makes friendly conversation. His hours work best for him be-cause its not too late at night and not too early in the morn-ing. The student body is also well mannered, respectful and he is very happy about that.

Mr. Rich Herrell

He came to Swink because he likes the community here. The staff is also really nice to him and treats him like his own family. He used to work at Child Services before he came here and he loves to be around children. He love’s his hours that he has be-cause its not too early and not to late at night and he also loves that he can sleep in during the morning.

Joleen Carrica

She likes the people and the staff because they are nice and understanding. She thinks the grade scale is challenging and keeps effort towards studies.

Joshua Hilton

He really loves this school and he is learning a lot. He says it is a lot better than his old school because he

gets more assistance and there is less people and it helps him focus. He likes the grade scale because it gives him more of a chal-lenge and makes him work harder. He knew some kids before he came here and now he knows a lot more people and is treated really nice.

Todd Redner Jr.

He came to Swink because Cheraws academics were going down. There are 5 days a week rather than 4 days and there is more kids in Swink. The point scale is another challenge for him and it makes it a little bit harder. He feels very wel-comed because he plays baseball here.

Mr. Angelito Balboa

He came across Swink be-cause it has one of the best standards for education. He has been teaching for 13 years, 10 of which was spent in the Philippines. The stu-dents here are more en-gaged and motivated to go to school.

He likes the people and the staff members because they are nice and supportive and the students are respectful.

He loves teaching business

Mrs. Martha Roberson

Before she came to Swink, she used to teach in the same district but she needed a change, and with her daugh-ter being here, she liked what she saw. She used to teach in Pampa, Texas; Ser-geant; and La Junta for 26 years. She plans on working here until she retires. One of the biggest differences is the expectations of the students, and the close nit community. She likes the small class sizes because it allows you to get to know the students more.

Mr. Elton Teruya

He came into our community in April of last summer and chose to come to Swink because his previous job was a little hazardous and there was a job opening here. He likes Swink be-cause it is really organized and has clear goals and objectives for the whole school. The staff is really

Mrs. Anne Savage

She went to teach at Carvel for 15 years and eventually decided to move to Swink.

She used to teach at a private university in Iowa for 4 years. She was gifted with lots of skills which inspired her to teach. There are good kids here and they have good atti-tude. She also likes how the kids and staff is interested in music.
