???Describe your style in three (two syllable) words. JET LEE meets MAN RAY.

How hard do you really work? OBSESIVELY, I hate sleeping

when there are ideas in my

head….

The future of design? Less sparkle, more reason.

Procrastination is... A word I have never heard of,

what is that, some kind of Udon

Noodle ????

Driving force?

The images that keep popping

into my head – driving me crazy

until I shoot them….

Style. Discuss.

It’s an inner thing, you don’t

need a budget to ‘got-it’.

Give or take? Give. For the past fifteen

years I have done a lot of

voluntary work, it has been

an inspiration to me – these

have been community based

voluntary projects working with

underprivileged children, the

homeless, on environmental

and civil liberty projects. I have

met the most amazing, strong

and beautiful people.

Page 17: NewSugar Issue 8

17

Incorrect things you believed as a child.STICKY ONE THIS... but it would

have to be I was taught that

there is only one god to believe

in, then I found out that there

were in fact loads – then I

realised just how many stars

there are out there and how

many planets were spinning

around them – we are the only

ones - PLEASE….

Before I die...I want to finish my work.

Your favourite flaw. Laughing inappropriately.

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed? My Own Work In Frustration.

Your favourite waste of time?

Walking barefoot on grass,

sounds daft but it always makes

me smile.

I am reading...Craig Horsfield – RELATION,

heavy but heavenly – after 23

years working as an artist, my

brain still has difficulty coping

with the theory of why I do it.

You would be mad not to... Stop, breath slowly, take a look

around and wonder.

Most visited online hideout? The back end of my own

website uploading new work –

scary!

???Describe your style in three (two syllable) words.Minimal, colourful collage

What is your favourite method to date?Scissors, UHU stick and hands.

What’s in your near future?I’m in the process of

transforming my friends

shed into a screen-printing

facility, fingers crossed it all

goes according to plan.

Also preparations for winter

hibernation and getting loads

of work done

My number one tip is... Persistence….

Driving force?Staying sane and chasing

the dream of a quiet place

somewhere in the desert with

my girlfriend and our future

dogs.

Most under worn item of clothing?I bought some amazing beige

Italian shoes a few month ago

from a car boot, think I’ve only

worn them once, might go put

them on now.

I wish I could dislike...Hoarding so much other

people’s old stuff.

Give or take? You have to do both if not you’ll

use up all your karma points

and something really bad will

happen to you.

Incorrect things you believed as a child. That shitting in my toy box and

using the poo to redecorate the

hall was totally acceptable, oh

the shame.

Twitter?

I’ve got an account but still not

too sure about the whole thing,

besides I only get porn people

following me, the scumbags!

Worst thing I ever forgot...Peoples names, that part of my

brain only works 50% of the time.

Your favourite waste of time? Coffee, car boot sales and

buying dead peoples stuff.

Scary?Our chav neighbours when they

fight.

I am reading...Bukowski, he is a legend!

Most visited online hideout?Flickr, so many images so little

time….

???What is your favourite method to date? Working at night, listening to

music, creating some art.

How hard do you really work? When I work at night and

nobody is bothering me I can

work for hours, usually 3 or 4

days a week…I need to be

inspired though, otherwise I just

make a mess.

What’s in your near future? I am planning to exhibit in

London soon. Then I planning

on exhibiting a collection of

urban London landscapes in

Mexico next year.

Nature or nurture?

Both. Developing your skill is

necessary if you have a gift.

Driving force?I don’t know. I’ve thought about

it in the past but couldn’t find

an answer… I just like it!

Uncontrollable gestures?

I bite my nails

I wish I could dislike...Junk food

Incorrect things you believed as a child. I thought that tiny singers lived

inside our stereo. Once I tried

to feed them by putting some

jelly inside, well, stereos were big

enough back then!

Before I die...I want to be absolutely happy …

doesn’t everyone?

Twitter? I haven’t been dragged into

that yet]

My dream is...To make a living out of art.

Favorite song?‘A Day in the Life’ by the Beatles

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed?

My first guitar

Scary? Flying on a plane

I am reading...McCarthy’s ‘No Country for

Old Men’…. I haven’t seen the

movie yet… it’s more interesting

that way.

From the Espeluzland biography...Axtor Disney was an american

cartoonist, illustrator, musician,

and magician. Elder brother of

Walter E. and Roy O. Disney, he

along with his brothers founded

The Walt Disney Company in

1923.

After many heated and

sometimes violent discussions,

mostly due to his very peculiar

and strange work methods,

and especially because of his

children illustrations which can

only be described as ‘queer’, he

was fired from his own company

and expelled from the core of

the Disney family itself, situation

that made him change his very

own last name from Disney to

“Majesto” (paying tribute to a

bum from his neighborhood).

His brothers made sure to wipe

each and every piece of work

that could credit his existence,

burning all his sketches and

his macabre collection of

deformed animals.

Secluded in the darkness

and mentally supressed, Axtor

decides to give birth to a new

company named “Espeluzland”

in order to compete with the

overly friendly and fantastic

world of his new enemies, the

Disney brothers. The failure

was resounding. Deprived

of any trace of honor, and

overwhelmed by debt and the

constant harassment by the

right-minded organizations of

the time, he withdrew himself

again into his ancient and now

abandoned castle, to which

he referred to as his great

unfulfilled dream “Espeluzland”,

where he dwelt until his

mysterious disappearance.

Very few traces remain of his

artistic legacy, and all that

prevails is the legend. Not many

years ago it was known that

there was a secret organization

whose only purpose was to

find the missing work of Axtor

Majesto, to preserve it and show

it to the world through their

website:

ESPELUZLAND.COM

It is because of this organization

that part of the work of this

deeply perturbed but brilliant

artist reaches our hands, and

yet it is nothing but a small

part of the vast and unknown

universe that resided in sick

mind.

???Describe your style in three (two syllable) words.Nerdy, clumsy, teenage

How hard do you really work? Not as much as I would like

to. I work in digital arts, mostly

newspaper and magazines

design, spending all day on

that. Sadly I’m interested in

almost everything related to

plastic arts, so I would like

to have 120h per day to do

everything comes across and

not always having this feeling

that I’m out of time.

What’s in your near future?I’m going to start a

collaboration on a digital

magazine for children; based

on comics and illustration,

where I’ll have my own section

about child superheroes.

Nature or nurture?Nurture, of course! Thinking

that only nature is important,

serves only to frustrate oneself. It

makes you believe you couldn’t

do things that you would like

instead of working hard to

achieve your own goals.

Where’s your head at?I guess I could say I’m into Todd

Solondz way of life. Also I’ve

been recently researching on

morphopsychology and trying

to find a way to illustrate human

stereotypes by associating

common facial features with

certain types of people.

Uncontrollable gestures? My eyebrows always betray me

exposing my real feelings about

something. That makes a lot of

trouble for me.

I wish I could dislike...Cheerleader and teenage

movies. I just love them,

although, in general, they are

against my principles.

Page 44: NewSugar Issue 8

44

Incorrect things you believed as a child.I used to believe that bird-

doctors (aka vets) were other

birds instead of humans, and

that they were wearing extra

small white coats and doctor

stuff hanging on their ‘necks’.

And yes: the same thing with

dogs, cats and fishes...

Your favourite flaw.I always get upset thinking

someone has stolen my purse

or cellphone, knowing that I

ALWAYS find it in my bag three

seconds before I yell out and

loud ‘someone has stolen my

purse!’ or ‘Crap! I’ve lost my

phone!’

Twitter?

Sure! @eunicinha

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed? It would be nice to say it was

someone’s heart but I think it

was a washing machine...

Worst thing I ever forgot...“Worst thing I’ve ever

remembered” would be the

right question, since I NEVER

remember anything. I’m like that

little Dory fish in Finding Nemo.

Your favourite waste of time?Watching reality shows, and

looking people’s pictures in

Facebook: that’s almost the

same kind of P.P. (personal

pornography).

Scary?A lot. I’m afraid to everything

that cannot be seen. Like spirits,

dead peoples’ souls, blah, bleh,

blih.

I am reading...Obras Incompletas by Gloria

Fuertes.

???What is your favourite method to date?I love working in collage,

directly, without thinking very

much, only with a few basic

guidelines about the idea and

format... always using original

images, to give more value to

the piece.

How hard do you really work?Fortunately I work many hours

a day. I am the founder of

a study of creativity called

PobrelaVaca, and my work is

hard but entertaining and very

comforting. When I finish my

work on the studio, I arrive home

and make all my collages and

illustrations, so I´m working all

day!!

What’s in your near future?I have an exhibition coming up

in which I´m really focussed,

with new works in big format.

Also in the coming months I’m

giving a workshop on collage,

so my near future is very busy.

The future of design? The future of design is

specialisation, the commitment

for being better and for not

losing the values that we have.

The future is the solidarity,

the development, and the

collaboration between all. So,

with the force that has our

message, to create a better

world.

Where’s your head at? Right now I am doing some

works in big format, making

stencil on collage. A very

meticulous but nice work, so my

head is now in it.

Most under worn item of clothing? My Vans. Old but confortable.

Give or take?I believe that in the life it is

necessary to give. The person

who only thinks about receiving

is an idiot. We have to try to

give everything possible of us

ourselves.

Before I die...Before dying, I would like to

be reconciled with those with

whom I’ve got angry. I would not

like to die without reconciling.

Your favourite flaw.

My best shortcoming is

continuing to behave as a child.

I suppose it’s this spirit of Peter

Pan that evades all of once

we see that we already are 30

years old.

Page 51: NewSugar Issue 8

51

Twitter? No thanks, It´s horrible. I like to

see my friends, drink a beer and

talk. Twitter is against all that.

Twitter is just another way to

take the control of our life.

My dream is...My dreams are very current, I’m

not ambitious but I’m a hard-

working person, so I put myself

on goals that, in the short or

long term, I will be able to

realize.

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed?I use old (very old) magazines

for my collages. The first time a

cut one, I was one hour with the

scissors on my hands thinking

about if it was right or wrong.

Then I cut it!!! It was a magazine

from 1936 about the Spanish

Civil War.

Your favourite waste of time? When I have free time, which is

rare, I like being with the people

that I love, with my wife, my dog,

my friends... Those that deserve

my free time, not the television

or similar weapons of mass

destruction.

I am reading...“The legend of Mother Sarah”

by Katshuhiro Otomo. It´s really

one of my favourites.

You would be mad not to...I would be mad if I was not

trying to be riskier and riskier, if

I was not trying to give myself

more and more difficult goals.

If I was content with the easy

thing or with what comes to us

given, I would be mad.

???How hard do you really work? I definitely fluctuate haha,

sometimes I’ll be psyched to

work and am very industrious

and other times I’ll have no

motivation and just want to be

lazy and chill.

What’s in your near future? Hopefully, dreams and plans

come to fruition and I release

my own tee/fashion label, so

keep your eyes and ears open

for that one and am about to

start long overdue work on an

official portfolio site for myself.

My number one tip is... Worrying is like a rocking chair, it

gives you something to do, but

it doesn’t get you anywhere.

The future of design? Is always influenced by the past.

The past is always my first port

of call for inspiration.

Driving force?I’ll give you two, Gravity and

Desire

Last time you gagged inappropriately. Few days ago, listening to

a novice middle aged lady

and wise 20 year old guy talk

about Warcraft with their official

Warcraft handbooks in tow on

the train. They spoke with such

excitement and fervour that the

jargon filled conversation kept

me captivated for 40 minutes

and I hate video games haha.

Style. Discuss. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “In

matters of grave importance,

style, not sincerity, is the vital

thing.”

Before I die...I want to look back and say ‘I

lived it’.

Page 57: NewSugar Issue 8

57

Your favourite flaw. Always having to win an

argument/debate.

Twitter? Could be a useful tool but I’m

too blinded by my hate for it.

Too much pointless babble.

Predicting the fad will blow over

in approximately 8 months.

My dream is... To live the dream

Create your own question... In the name of shameless self promotion, if someone wished to view more of your work or contact you?

They could check out my

portfolio at

www.behance.net/arcadiacreative

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed? My reputation haha no I would

say my first car, it was simple

and effective, loved it but all

good things must come to an

end and after two collisions, the

blue bullet finally died.

Your favourite waste of time?

Movies, I deserve VIP status

at my local video store and

cinema.

I am reading... Latest issue of ‘T – The Journal

of T-Shirt Culture’ magazine that

I received in the mail today.

???What is your favourite method to date? Acrylic on Masonite. The paint

just blends so nicely.

How hard do you really

work?

There’s 27 hours in a day, right?

Procrastination is... Sitting around and twiddling

ones thumbs? Time waits for no

one folks.

Nature or nurture? Don’t they kind of mean the

same thing? If we nurture

nature, doesn’t nature nurture

us?

Where’s your head at? Firmly planted, but that doesn’t

mean it isn’t in the clouds.

Last time you gagged inappropriately. A few days ago when my cat

left me a gooey treasure on

my flip-flops (but that could be

considered an appropriate &

justified gag)

Style. Discuss.

Addams family meets Amelie.

Stripy knee socks, and a bit of

vintage goodness.

I wish I could dislike... music from the 20s-40s. it makes

me feel really old. I mean, what

am I going to listen to when I

am 80?

Incorrect things you believed as a child. Well you see, I had this army

of tiny toy soldiers who lived in

my closet, and if i tried to leave

my bedroom in the dark, they

would always grab me by the

ankles & pull me back in. i still

have to turn the light on in the

hallway occasionally, because,

well...you just never know!

Twitter? Why yes, thank you.

twitter.com/pepprmintforest

My dream is... to keep my loved ones (two-

legged & four-legged) forever

and ever. And a second home

in a little French village, like in

the movie Chocolat =)

Your favourite waste of time? People watching. They come in

so many curious shapes and

sizes.

Scary? When the dog stares into a

room like it sees something you

don’t. Terrifying.

I am reading... the composer is dead!

You would be mad not to...

Make the most of your life =) I

don’t understand why some just

opt to “exist”!

???Describe your style in three (two syllable) words. Cutting, sticking, drawing.

What is your favourite method to date? Cutting and sticking is my

favourite. I like to create images

using a collage and mixed

media approach, mixing hand-

drawn elements with all kinds of

papers and fabrics.

How hard do you really work?Harder than a very hard rock.

The future of design? Like the past of design, but with

more flying cars.

Procrastination is... A problem which exists only

during daylight hours. I’m

always super motivated in the

middle of the night.

Nature or nurture?Where’s your head at?

Driving force? Most under worn item of

clothing?

Style. Discuss. Style is skinny jeans, big sunnies,

a ring on every finger and

hands covered in glue.

I wish I could dislike... Paper! I’m like some kind of

magpie - I hoard anything that

could be used in my work; I

can’t bear to throw a single

piece away. My collection is

threatening to take over the

whole house.

Page 72: NewSugar Issue 8

72

Incorrect things you believed as a child. That power plants with smoky

chimneys were cloud factories,

and that clouds were made of

candyfloss; I used to want to

climb out of aeroplanes to eat

them. That when people died in

films, they died in real life. That

if I dug a hole deep enough,

I’d end up in Australia. That my

mum would live forever.

Your favourite flaw? My tendency to exaggerate

everything – it makes for some

pretty interesting stories - and

perfectionism. It’s a love/

hate relationship. Oh, and my

double-jointed thumbs. They

freak people out.

Twitter? Yep! @madiillustrates Follow

meeee!

My dream is... To be a successful illustrator.

To have a children’s book

published. To travel to Australia.

New Zealand. Canada. Japan.

Ireland. To save up enough

money to buy a tortoise. To build

a treehouse. To inspire someone.

Worst thing I ever forgot... was how to remember.

Your favourite waste of time? Feeding the ducks. It’s not

my most common time-

waster, but it’s definitely my

favourite. Collaging monsters is

becoming a bit of a habit too.

Scary? Dogs. Even the tiny ones.

You would be mad not to... Wear odd socks.

???What is your favourite method to date?Digital caricatures painted with

Photoshop.

How hard do you really work?As hard as I need to. When I

begin a project, I like to see it

through to completion, even if

it doesn’t look good. At least in

that case, I know what not to do

next time.

My number one tip is... Figure out what you do best,

then figure out how to do it

better.

Procrastination is... The death of inspiration.

Where’s your head at? I’ve been accused in the past of

having it stuck somewhere dark

and unmentionable, but really,

most of the time it’s thinking

about drawing.

Style. Discuss. Style is simply the distilled

accumulation of all your

various inspirations and bad

habits. If you’re smart, you’ll

figure out how to turn this into

something unique and original.

I know some artists will hunt out

whatever the latest hot trend is

and try to copy it. The problem

with working this way is there

a thousand other artists doing

the exact same thing. It’s far

better to be a trend-setter than

a trend-follower.

Uncontrollable gestures? I tap my foot a lot when sitting

still.

I wish I could dislike...G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, but

God help me, I liked it.

Incorrect things you believed as a child. There was a church near

my home that resembled

Cinderella’s castle. I was

convinced that it was the

gateway to DisneyWorld.

Twitter? Way too much (follow me @

markdraws).

Format?Until they invent a paintbrush

with an undo key, I’m sticking

with all-digital.

Create your own question... Why caricatures?A long time ago, I used to

draw quick-sketch caricatures

at street art fairs and private

parties in order make a few

bucks. In the years that have

followed I’ve done all manner of

design and illustration work, but

it’s always been drawing goofy

pictures of people that has

interested me most.

I am reading...Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan

Lethem.

Most visited online hideout? It’s a toss-up between Flickr and

The future of design? More technical skill and less

abstract crap I hope.

Procrastination is... Never completely avoidable but

maybe we can learn to control

it?

Driving force? The next level

Uncontrollable gestures? Laughing at people when they

express their hate for stuff

Incorrect things you believed as a child.

Life was fair!

I wish I could dislike... Staying up really late for no

good reason

Give or take? Gotta give first

Incorrect things you believed as a child.Adults had conversations

according to a pre-written

script.

Before I die... I want to have a big travelling

party with my friends across the

world.

Your favourite flaw. Thinking too much

Twitter? Twitter.com/wendyding

What is the best thing you’ve ever destroyed? A bad habit: not being able to

let things go

Your favourite waste of time? Surfing the internet,

daydreaming

Scary?

Not doing the things I love

I am reading... Blink by Malcolm Gladwell,

Women’s Health magazine,

LOLcats

You would be mad not to... Be able to laugh
