Hello students, families and friends of the Community

Immersion Program. Thank you for taking the time to

read the Gazette each month this 2014-2015 school

year. We will be publishing one special issue this

summer in the month of July, which will the

“Drought Issue.” Students have been asked to talk

The Gazette would like to wish Aaron, Amanda,

John C. and Ryan a fond farewell as they move on to

a new and exciting stage in their lives. We have

Fransisco Bay in California and landing

at John F Kennedy International Airport

in new York. It will go to five stops. It’s

a solar powered plane. It took off on

May the 3rd in the morning. It will be

the first exclusively Sun fueled cross

Hi everyone,

Today I’m going to talk about the

compressor. (supercharger) the

function of the compressor is to

force more air and fuel into the

combustion chamber. There are

three types of compressors the root

style compressor, the centrifugal

style compressor, and the twin

screw compressor. The difference

is in the configuration, but the

principle is the same.

The main problem that you might

run to is: losing power, extreme

noisiness and blue smoke coming

out of the exhaust. The noise and

power problems can normally

be fixed by yourself. The blue

smoke problem needs to be

checked by a mechanic or a

specialist

Tomorrow on Wednesday we are

making meat lasagna. I washed all

of the dishes and the cutting board

and the spoons and the knives. I

peeled the garlic. I chopped the

garlic. We are serving for 40 peo-

ple. The meat lasagna will taste

delicious!

so excited to ride United airlines. My flight leaves at 8 :30

am next Saturday and my family is going to the San Fran-

cisco Airport. I don’t like United Airlines, because the last

time I flew on United I went to Hawaii and I was about to

go on the flight when the flight attendants told us to get off

the plane because our plane had a gas failure. My flight

was delayed. Then our flight from San Francisco to Ha-

waii, when we landed there was firefighters waiting for us

at the airport. Our plane had a gas delay. But we got extra

credits in the end. I hope that my flights won’t have this

same problem again. I will see you all after I get back.

Hey guys today I am going to talk about my upcoming

Dear Amanda, 5-02-15

I have this friend who always picks on me. I think he does

not realize that he hurts my feelings. He is my friend. What

should I say to him the next time I see him. And what should

I do?

Sincerely,

Pin Cushion

——————————————————————-

Dear Pin Cushion

I think you should be firm and tell him how you feel. Make

sure he is listening to you. Have him focus on you. Tell him

that you don’t like the way he talks to you and don’t like the

way he treats you. Make him put himself in your shoes.

Make him understand what he is doing and how he is treat-

ing you is not ok. Lay down to him how you feel and that

you don’t like how he treats you. Ask him how he would

feel if you treated him the way he treats you. You have feel-

ings make him understand that. If he can’t understand you

or listen to you then he doesn’t deserve your friendship. You

don’t have to take my word for

it, because you are smart and it

is your decision what you de-

cide to do.

back the Wooly Mammoth. People ask where

will they put it? Well we can bring it to the

ice like Alaska that’s what they have been saying they will do. I

think it would be cool if we had

the mammoth with us again. The dinosaurs were real and The Ice

Age was real. I think we evolved

from animals. We all have our own opinions whether we evolved

over time or not, but I believe we

did.

.As you may remember last month I brought up

the topic that I would talk about animal fun

facts. A lot of animals came from the Dino-

saurs and the Ice Age. There was a movie about The Ice Age and The Dinosaurs. They

were real at one time. Animals today the wiled

ones, are closely related to the animals during the ice age and the dinosaurs. For example

birds, insects, bugs, reptiles, and a lot of other

animals came from prehistoric time, dinosaurs and the Ice Age. For those of you who believe

in God and going to church that’s ok. Although I believe in the evolution and that we evolved

over time. I heard that scientists are bringing

NARUTO

Hi every on this is John Rodrigues, The book series I am

writing about is called Naruto. I main theme of this manga

series as well as the anima is about ninjas. The four main

characters are called Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sa-

kura Haruno as well as their teacher Kakashi Hatake.

Naruto at a young age hade a demon (tailed beast) called

the nine tailed fox sealed inside him, which makes him a

Jinchuriki. A Jinchuriki is a human host that has something

(tailed beast) sealed inside of them. There are nine jinchu-

riki’s in total (Naruto being one of the nine). The main plot

of the story is that an organization called The Akatsuki,

whose mission is to capture and seal the tailed beasts, so

they can use them for war.

One of The Akutsuki’s

members is Sasuke’s older

brother called Itachi Uchi-

ha (Itachi killed his entire

clan except for Sasuke) for

that Sasuke vows to kill

his older brother for jus-

tice. The Akatsuki have

captured and sealed the

one throw seven tailed beast and so they start a war called

The Fourth Great Ninja War, to capture the remaining eight

and nine tailed beasts. The leader of The Akutsuki is Tobi a

masked ninja/ and Madara Uchiha who is dead but is

brought back as a zombie (not like the zombies in The

Walking Dead). The main question that might be going

throw your mind is who Tobi really is, you can find out if

you read the manga or watch the anima in English sub on

the website “Watch Cartoons Online”.

I hope that you will read Naruto and like it as much as I do.

I hope you all have a Ninja Summer

This is John Rodrigues saying “see you next month”.

This month I interviewed Brett Schmidt. Brett is the Program Spe-

cialist at our district. He appreciates the dedication of the district

staff and employees that do their best for our students. His favorite

animal is a tiger because it was his high school mascot. Bret has a

younger brother and lives in an apartment in San Jose. His favor-

ite food is BBQ Ribs and Pork Sandwiches. Brett enjoys going for

a jog or working out after work. On the weekends he likes to sleep

in and watch Premier League Soccer. With a cup of coffee. His

favorite sport is golf. He used to play baseball and basketball in

high school. Brett enjoys a lot of different kinds of music, like clas-

sic rock, electronic and the 80’s. He enjoys concerts but he doesn't

go very often. He likes rides at Theme Parks like roller coasters.

His favorite ride is Space Mountain at Disneyland. He doesn't like

rides like the Drop Zone that just drops straight down. His plans for

the summer are spending time at the beach”. I’m also looking for-

ward to going to an A’s game. Thank you for your time to have me

do questions this month for the Gazette.

Student of the Month A picture is worth a thousand words

and so with this month’s Student of

the month, I thought I’d let the

pictures speak for themselves.

What a year Chris Walsh has had.

From job training at the Goodwill,

to rehearsing nightly with the cast

of the West Valley College produc-

tion of Epic Proportions, he has

done amazing things.

His performance in Epic propor-

tions made us proud.

Finally, in the Spring when Chris

told us he was ready for a job and

wanted spending money, we worked with him to apply to over 17 local

businesses and went on 9 interviews, handing out 9 thank-you notes,

until finally getting hired by Safeway on Saratoga Sunnyvale.

Great job Chris! What a year?

Congratulations on all your hard work com-

ing to its fruition and congratulations on

being this month’s Student of the Month!!!

Job Training Sites:

Second Harvest Foodbank

This month we would like to highlight the Second Harvest Food Bank. Our program has

been using the Food Bank as one of our job training sites since September of 2012, so our relation-

ship goes way back. The Food Bank is unique among our job training sites in that it most mimics

what a real part time job would entail. Students volunteering at the Food Bank must commute to

their job independently by way of VTA and light rail. Students must arrive on time by 9:00 sharp,

not late-comers are allowed in. Students work a three hour shift which is quite long compared to oth-

er job sites. There is a 15 minute break mid-way

through the work shift in which students need to

independently stop work, rest and then get back

to work when the volunteer coordinator an-

nounces break time is over. Yes, the Food Bank

personnel managers can be strict task masters

but again this is great preparation for working at

an out-right hire position.

Currently, Hayden, Wata and Brian are sched-

uled to work at the Second Harvest Food Bank

on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our CIP staff

Patricia Zepeda shows up roughly 20 minutes

into the work shift to check-in on the students

who at that point have already arrived, signed-in

and gotten started with 100% independence. It has take some time but the students are now at a level

of independence where staff support needs to be faded so as to further encourage self-reliance and

the job behavioral norms of appropriate interactions with one’s co-workers and taking direct supervi-

sion from one’s supervisor (not program staff.)

When asked about what he likes about job training at the Second Harvest Foodbank, Hayden

Mitchell said, “I like feeding hungry people.” And indeed this is what they do. Students gather

around large bins of fresh produce which for any number of reasons had to be rejected by the super-

markets. Each day is different, with some days sorting carrots, other days, apples, corn on the cobb,

tomatoes (They say they hate tomatoes) and other items like bread and canned goods. Every day is

different. But what is not different is the student s

are expected to be quality control officers, tossing

out any produce that is moldy or crushed. Once they

fill up a box, they must weigh it and make sure it is

25 pounds. The final steps are to close the box and

carry it to the pallet to be stacked in a stable grid

pattern.

Our students enjoy working at the Food

Bank and without our students, some days the Food

Bank would have no volunteers, so it’s a great

match.!

Monthly Tip for instilling

Independence:

Seeing themselves as adults

helps students to self-regulate.

Cultural sensitivities aside, its useful

for a young adult to see himself or

herself as an adult by encouraging

them to use first names with other

adults if possible and appropriate.

A new wardrobe of cool, fashionable

young adult clothes can help the stu-

dent see themselves as an adult and

reinforce that they are now expected

to behave in a more mature manner. Out with the 10 year old sweat pants

and in with the skinny jeans. (for the

record I am generally not a fan of

skinny jeans)

Try to leave some weekends free so

that students can develop independ-

ence going on weekend outings with

their same-age peers.
