DR. BILL MAGEE II

Dr. William Magee is the Director of International Programs in the Division of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California and Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Shriners for Children Medical Center. As the oldest son of the Operation Smile Co-Founders, he has worked with the organization since the age of 13 and currently assists in both clinical and research capacities. He leads the Tsao Fellowship in Global Health in collaboration with Operation Smile and the Institute for Global Health at USC. Dr. Magee received his dental degree from University of Maryland, his medical degree from George Washington University before coming to USC for his plastic surgery residency. He has been on the faculty at USC since 2008.

PROFESSOR PANKAJ JANI

Professor Pankaj G. Jani is a gastrointestinal surgeon, endoscopist, educator, trainer and leader, who has for more than 30 years worked in Kenya and the East, Central and Southern African Health Community increasing the surgical capacity through education and training. Dr. Jani’s expertise is in hepato-pancreato-biliary and laparoscopic surgery, and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. He was a part of the team that was instrumental in setting up laparoscopic surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy in Kenya. He has been extensively involved with surgical training and health systems strengthening in 18 countries in the East, Central and Southern African Health Community. He has travelled widely both in Africa and abroad with the aim of improving surgical training and the care of surgical patients in Africa.

DR. KANT LIN

Dr. Kant Lin is a plastic surgeon with broad clinical interests including pediatric craniofacial, breast and aesthetic surgery. He treats patients seeking reconstruction for birth anomalies, gender affirmation and after-cancer treatment. Partnering closely with referring providers, he blends innovative and established technologies to optimize individualized patient outcomes. Dr. Lin is currently Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. He previously served as a professor of both plastic surgery and clinical pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was also chief of craniofacial surgery. A widely published researcher, he maintains extensive memberships in professional and scientific societies, and is a past president of the American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

DR. JOHN PERSING

Dr. John Persing received his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Vermont in 1970 and 1974, respectively. He is currently the Irving & Silk Polayes Professor of Plastic Surgery and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Yale University, a position he has held since 1992. He has held multiple leadership positions in the medical field including being the Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and being the President of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, chapters and books. For this work, he was awarded the "Clinician of the Year" by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons in 2010 and the James Barrett Brown award in 2015. His research interests include craniofacial anomalies, trauma, residency education and aesthetics.

DR. PER HALL

Dr. Per Hall has been a Consultant Plastic Surgeon working at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom, since 1996. He became a volunteer surgeon with Operation Smile in 2009 with his first mission being in Jimma, Ethiopia. Since then, he has returned on many occasions and has been helping the skilled local surgeons to develop their own plastic and reconstructive surgery service and a curriculum for training the next generation. Jimma is now becoming established as a reconstructive and cleft center for southern Ethiopia, and he is coming to NEXT to tell you all about it with friends from Ethiopia who need your help.

DR. GEORGE POLITIS

Dr. George Politis works as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has been working with Operation Smile since 1997 where he has attended more than 30 medical missions. He is Chair of the Operation Smile Anesthesia Council since 2013 and serves on the Quality Improvement and Medical Oversight Committees. He also worked extensively with Operation Smile's educational efforts, including establishing the 2008 guidelines for and promoting anesthesia resident mission participation and took a leading role in the Jimma University (Ethiopia) project, attempting to assist the three anesthesiology faculty to train their 10 anesthesia residents in a residency program established in 2014. George is also co-founder of a group called The Global Anesthesia Partnership for Education, a group that is launching a weekly educational seminar that uses telemedicine to bring curriculum-related topics to all Ethiopian residents in three Ethiopian anesthesiology training programs. George earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1985 and his Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkley in 1989.

DR. VINAY NADKARNI

Dr. Vinay Nadkarni is a Professor and Endowed Chair at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Departments of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He served as chair of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation from 2007 to 2016 and was chairman of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee from 2006 to 2010. He was a founding member of the American Heart Association’s National Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Get with the Guidelines-Resuscitation) in more than 350 hospitals nationwide. He has mentored more than 100 postdoctoral fellows and physician-scientists.

DR. CHARLOTTE DUCOTE

Dr. Charlotte Ducote has been a speech language pathologist (SLP) for more than 44 years. She has worked in clinical and academic settings through the years. She retired in October 2017 from Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she had worked since 1994 as Director of Speech Language Pathology in the Otorhinolaryngology and Communication Sciences Department. She provided services to pediatric and adult patients with a wide range of communication delays and disorders as well as oral-pharyngeal swallowing and feeding impairments. She has been involved as a SLP with Operation Smile since 1996 as a medical mission volunteer, instructor in SLP issues for educational missions and mentoring, and as a member and coordinator of the Speech Pathology Council.

ROSIE BOREY

Rosie Borey has been a volunteer nurse with Operation Smile for more than 10 years. She was part of the core team that set up Operation Smile’s former comprehensive cleft care center in Guwahati, India. As founding operating room (OR) nurse manager, Rosie was responsible for developing a safe and efficient operating theater capable to serving hundreds of children every month. She led the development and implementation of an entire education program in OR nursing care. Rosie believes that building local capacity through education, knowledge and skills transfer is key to creating sustainable and lasting changes in developing countries. In 2013, she moved to Kigali, Rwanda, where she spent four years working for the Human Resources for Health program, training the next generation of health care professionals. Whilst working and living in Rwanda, Rosie continued to be part of Operation Smile surgical training rotations. She has been involved in training and education for students, nurses, anesthetists and residents from all over the world. She is currently coordinating outreach activities, including surgery, to remote indigenous communities in Australia.

CLAIRE DONAGHY

Claire Donaghy began volunteering with Operation Smile in November 2007 during the World Journey of Smiles, which marked the 25th anniversary of the organization. She became a clinical coordinator in 2012 and has volunteered on more than 20 missions.

Claire received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in nursing from Rutgers University and a post-master’s certificate from Columbia University as an acute care nurse practitioner. In 2014, she was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Rwanda School of Nursing, where she taught in the Bachelor of Science in nursing program, mentored faculty and helped develop the curriculum for the first Master of Science in nursing program in Rwanda.

MARC JULMISSE

Marc Julmisse was born in Haiti but moved to the United States as an infant. Marc has been working in the nursing profession for more than 17 years. She received her nursing degree from Atlantic Union College School of Nursing, her graduate degree and certificate in humanitarian assistance from Loma Linda University School of Public Health. She has worked in several roles that range from hospital staff registered nurse on the inpatient and critical care units, as a visiting nurse in the Southern California Foster Care System for Medically Fragile Children, a community health nurse, a medical programs coordinator and as Chief Nursing Officer at the Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais in Haiti for Partners In Health/Zanmi Lasante since 2013, focusing on hospital development and capacity building.

DR. CAROLINA HAYLOCK LOOR

Dr. Carolina Haylock Loor currently works as an anesthesiologist, an intensive care physician and an interventional pain physician. She is also an Assistant Professor of the Honduran Anesthesiology Residency Program in Pain internship. She has been a representative for the Latin America region in the World Federation of Socities of Anaesthesiologists Council since 2012. She also served as the President of the Honduran Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy (SHARD) for seven years. Carolina graduated from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Hondurasin Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with a Doctor of Medicine degree.

DR. TERESITA PANNACI

Dr. Teresita Pannaci is a dentist and a consultant in functional maxillary orthopedics. She has been working with Operation Smile since 1993. She is also a founding member of Operation Smile Venezuela (1993) and served as a member of the Board of Directors for the foundation from 1993 to 2008. She has been involved with planning and execution of workshop and training programs for Operation Smile dentists in Africa, Central America, Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Venezuela since 1995. She has attended 144 local missions in Venezuela and took part in 29 international medical missions. Teresita is also a founding member of the Mouth Pathologic Society. She has also written many pieces of literature regarding cleft lip and cleft palate.

MARK MOORE

Mark Moore is the co-founder of MANA Nutrition, one of the world’s leading suppliers of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), the front-line defense against severe acute malnutrition. Mark and his team raised $13 million in 2011 to build MANA’s 30,000 square-foot production facility, which now employs more than 60 people and supplies partners such as UNICEF, the World Food Program, World Vision, Doctors without Borders and USAID to aid in their efforts in fighting malnutrition in more than 50 countries across the globe. MANA has grown over the past eight years, supplying nearly $25 million of RUTF last year to the U.N. and U.S. government. Mark was an Unreasonable Institute (now Uncharted) Fellow in Boulder, Colorado, in 2013, where he and others launched Calorie Cloud, an effort to harvest excess calories in the U.S. and send them into 500-calorie packets of RUTF. Calorie Cloud now partners with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to run UNICEF Kid Power, the first-ever fit-for-good technology platform.

RON GUIDO

Ron Guido is President of LifeCare Services, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in brand protection, anti-counterfeiting technologies and supply chain integrity. Ron has 36 years of experience with Johnson & Johnson. At the time of his retirement from Johnson & Johnson in 2013, Ron served as Vice President, Global Brand Protection and Supply Chain Integrity. He initiated that function in 2007 and implemented best practices for safeguarding products across all commercial channels. He is a volunteer and former board member of Operation Smile.

CHIC THOMPSON

Chic Thompson is a Batten Fellow of Entrepreneurship at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and adjunct faculty at the Brookings Institution and the Young Presidents’ Organization. His passion is inspiring executives, Master of Business Administration students, and children to be “curious first … critical second” while creative problem solving. Chic’s latest creative adventure is founding WAGiLabs, a global, social innovation incubator for kids’ ideas. His first book, “What a Great Idea!” was published by HarperCollins, and Harvard Business School released a case study on his speaking career.

GEORGE BIRDSONG

George Birdsong is currently the CEO/General Counsel for the Birdsong Corporation. He went to work for Birdsong Peanuts, a family business, in 1965 as Secretary Treasurer and held various officer positions before becoming CEO in 1999. Birdsong Peanuts celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2014. He has been involved in U.S. peanut industry organizations and issues throughout his career. He is in his 52nd year of employment with Birdsong Peanuts. He was born in Suffolk, Virginia, and has been a lifetime resident, supporter and contributor of the Suffolk and Hampton Roads Communities.

JEFF JOHNSON

Jeff Johnson served as President of Birdsong Peanuts from 1990 until 2017. He was one of the original organizers of The Peanut Institute in 1995 and served as its Chairman for its first three years. He also served on the first Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut, which is dedicated to improving the yield and quality of peanuts grown in Africa. In 2004, he began an industry-wide humanitarian effort to expand the use of peanut-based therapeutic foods in Africa. Jeff retired as President of Birdsong Peanuts in January 2018 but continues to work in these areas. Peanuts are grown worldwide and are one of the most sustainable sources of protein and healthy lipids. Those attributes, plus the low-cost and great flavor, make them a unique asset in the global fight against hunger.

DR. JOHN WILSON

Dr. John P. Wilson is Professor of Sociology and Spatial Sciences in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California, where he directs the Spatial Sciences Institute as well as the Wilson Map Lab. He also serves as Geographic Information System (GIS) Lead for the Spatial and Exposure Analytics Core in the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center and for the Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and holds courtesy appointments as Professor in the School of Architecture, the Keck School of Medicine of USC’s Department of Preventive Medicine, and in the Viterbi School of Engineering’s Departments of Computer Science and Civil & Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on the modeling of human and environmental systems and makes extensive use of GIS tools, spatial analysis, and computer models. He has published numerous books and articles on these topics, including “Environmental Applications of Digital Terrain Modeling” (Wiley-Blackwell, 2018). Much of his work is collaborative and cross-disciplinary with the goal of improving our understanding of the factors linking people, their environments and their health.

DR. ROBERT RIVIELLO

Dr. Robert Riviello is an Associate Surgeon in the Division of Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Dr. Riviello serves as Director of Global Surgery Programs at the BWH Center for Surgery and Public Health and is a member of the faculty for the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at HMS. Current research projects in Rwanda focus on introducing educational innovations, building trauma care capacity, improving understanding of barriers to care.

DR. DONALD MACKAY

Dr. Donald Mackay is the William P. Graham III Professor of Plastic Surgery, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Mackay trained as both a dentist and physician in South Africa before completing training in general surgery and plastic surgery in South Africa and the United States. He has served as President of the American Association of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons and Chair of the Section of Plastic Surgery of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is the past Chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the Plastic Surgery Residency Review Committee. He is currently the President of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, President of the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons and President Elect of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Mackay is a past Chief Medical Officer for Operation Smile.
