Dear Friends, The year is rushing by and we only have one concert le  in our series, and of course our New Year’s Eve Gala concert. If you missed our Rhonda Burchmore on Broadway concert you will certainly be disappointed.  We have included some photos and reviews, as well as some of the audience comments.  It was wonderful to work with Rhonda, but equally the young ar sts from the Queensland Conservatorium Musical Theatre.  They were just amazing and it gives me great hope that these talented students will be the next leading ar sts in the world of Music Theatre. Our next concert, Best of the Pops, is a program of music that you have helped us select.  We will have your favourites from our concerts over the last 30 years including Best of Bri sh, Cel c Concerts, and New Year’s Eve.  We will also include just some of the ar sts whose performances you have enjoyed over recent  mes.  Greg Moore con nues to be a favourite and will be our special guest, along with the Watkins Academy of Irish Dance and featuring Tyler Watkins who has just been crowned Queensland Champion Irish Dancer. A big thrill will be the return to Australia of Pipe Major Roddy MacDonald who has just featured as the Pipe Major for the Edinburgh Military Ta oo and the Lone Piper for the Film night.  Straight from the biggest stage in the world for a piper into our very own QPAC for you.  More Than Words Vocal Ensemble will not only make a return visit as a support for Greg Moore, but this  me also as featured ar sts.  Leading a strong Cel c opening to our second act will be the Mansfield SHS Cel c Strings and this sec on will include a wonderful new arrangement of Danny Boy for Greg and the chorus. Perhaps the most exci ng part of this concert will be our feature musicians from within the orchestra. Many of you have been asking for this since I’ve been with the orchestra, so here we go.  You will be introduced to our soloists later in this newsle er. Why not get a group together for this upcoming concert.  As you are aware, we do not enjoy government funding and only survive as a business from the sales of  ckets, so you, our Friends, are our main support base.  Thank you in an cipa on of your a endance at what promises to be another fabulous concert. Warmest regards

Daniel Riek a ained a Bachelor of Music in 2000 

from the QLD Conservatorium of Music he then joined the Australian Army Band Corps as a Trombonist.  His leadership quali es culminated in his appointment as the Music Director of Australian Army Band Perth from 2009—2012. On leaving the Army he moved back to Queensland with his family and went to the University of Southern Queensland to study Accoun ng.  Although he works for the Queensland Audit Office he s ll finds the  me to play Trombone at every opportunity and con nues to serve as a reservist in the Australian Army Band Brisbane. 

On this concert you will see, but may not believe what the Trombone is capable of.  Daniel’s skill and versa lity on this instrument is just brilliant.

Karen Ruprecht achieved a Bachelor of Music with Honours from Qld Conservatorium and recently completed a Licen ate in Music from AMEB. 

She has worked with the QLD Symphony Orchestra and has regularly performed with the QLD Pops Orchestra since the days of Colin Harper. She enjoys a busy schedule of freelance playing with many years performing as Principal Bassoon with Opera Australia and in musicals around Queensland. Karen is an Australian Army Reservist and plays Bassoon with the Australian Army Band Brisbane and Royal Australian Ar llery Band. 

Polish born Michal Rosiak is a flau st and composer. 

Mr Rosiak is a recipient of Polish Ministry of Culture Scholarship, and he gave his debut as a composer and a soloist in the age of 17, by performing his composi on “Adagio & Scherzo” for flute and orchestra with Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra in Katowice/Poland. 

His other awards include prizes in many interna onal compe ons for composers and performers. 

Michal Rosiak has been a Principal Flau st with the Opole Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland, and in Australia, he has been performing as guest flau st with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Art Orchestra, the Queensland Pops Orchestra and Camarata of St John’s. 

In January 2013, his two composi ons “Angry Tunes” and “Swinging Metamorphosis” was awarded and performed during the 26th Pacific Northwest Music Conference in Sea le/USA. 

Michal has also been a regular guest flau st and composer at the Australian Flute Fes val in Canberra. He is a Burkart Flute Ar st and a Represented Ar sts by the Australian Music Centre. 

Watkins Academy of Irish Dance has been a part of the Pops concerts since the very early days. Tyler Watkins (pictured on the right) is the 2016 State Champion Irish Dancer.

Chris Williams  was principal trumpet with the Australian Youth Orchestra for two years and has played trumpet professionally with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonie a and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. He has appeared as guest principal trumpet with the Hong Kong Sinfonie a and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.  

Chris has performed as a trumpet soloist with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra, the Queensland Pops Orchestra and the Australian Army Band. He was nominated for the Australian Freedman Fellowship award for Jazz in 2008 and for the Australian Young Achiever Award in 2007 and 2008.  He has performed didgeridoo at Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Jubilee and he has a Masters degree in Classical Trumpet Performance from the Royal College of Music in London. 

In 2015 Chris performed in London for the ANZAC day centenary services at Westminster Abbey at which the Queen was in a endance. He also gave a recital of didgeridoo music and classical trumpet works in Vienna.

Glenn Murray comes from a background of vast 

experience and senior roles in most of the major shows that have toured Australia in recent  mes.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Merit and a Masters Degree in Performance from Sydney Conservatorium, where he studied with Harry Curby, Laszlo Kiss and Bogodar Kotorovich.  Most recently he has been playing with Camerata of St John’s in Brisbane, a er moving from Sydney.  

Glenn has been the leader and solo violinist for many musical theatre shows, including Hello Dolly, Crazy for You, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King. He was leader for My Fair Lady and Showboat, and played solo violin for Chicago and Annie.  He led the na onal and interna onal tour to Hong Kong 

and Singapore of Singin' in the Rain, as well as the na onal tour of Fiddler on the Roof with Topol in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Glenn has led orchestras suppor ng interna onal performing ar sts from Anthony Warlow, Olivia Newton‐John and Michael Crawford to Elvis to the Max.  He was also the Australian Co‐Concertmaster for Barbra Streisand's Timeless Australian tour. 

Glenn plays an 1879 violin from Vienna made by Thomas Zach.

More Than Words is an small vocal 

ensemble made up from members from the Queensland Show Choir. The group performs at a variety of events ‐ from performing a flash mob at an engagement party and a variety of corporate events through to being featured ar sts at Brisbane Sings every year. They love to sing all styles of music and love to entertain whenever they get the opportunity.

Rhonda Burchmore on Broadway

The cri cs claim this was the best concert ever produced by the Pops.  The Concert Hall was transformed, the orchestra was dazzling and the signing was wonderful.  The Conservatorium students proved themselves every bit as polished as the very vivacious Rhonda Burchmore.
