HETEROGENEITY

INTEROPERABILITY

NETWORKS(Interoperability, Management)

SERVICES+APPLICATIONS(Interworking, Transparency)

MULTIPLICITY of OPERATORS, SERVICE PROVIDERS(QoS, SLAs, Accounting)

Increasing Critical Dependency of Global Economy on Telecoms

Page 8: Next Generation Networks in the IST Programme

Integrated infrastructure

Interoperability and integration of heterogeneous networks• fixed-mobile and wireless ( IPV6, Mobile IP etc…)• protocol inter-working(Voice over IPv4/IPv6, Video/MPEG interoperability)

Multi-domain adaptive network management:• dynamic management of resource (spectrum, ..)• self-aware self-organising wireless networks• active networks

Evolution to high speed access• optical WDM• hybrid fibre/cable/wireless

eEUROPE Action Plan

The eEurope Action Plan, adopted by the European Council in Feira (19-20 June 2000), has 3 objectives

• A cheaper, faster and secure Internet

• Investing in people and skills

• Stimulate the use of the Internet

Some of the actions of the 1st Objective are:

• Give increased priority to supporting the development of information infrastructure and projects.

• Move towards full conversion to IPv6 through pilot implementation in Europe.

• Work towards introducing greater competition in local access networks.

• Achieve significant reductions in internet access tariffs.

IV.2.1. Distributed systems & Services provision (Call 5)

DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS

Objective : To develop and assess models, technologies and tools for the use of geographically distributed applications and resources in the context of heterogeneous systems.

* to develop doesn’t refer to the applications

* the “s” in applications does matter

* not only development but also assessment

* no proprietary solutions

Page 17: Next Generation Networks in the IST Programme

IV.2.1. Distributed systems & Services provision (Call 5)

SERVICE PROVISION

Objective : To develop and validate methods and tools to support network inter-working and management at services level.

Focus : Virtual Private Networks Active and programmable Network Technologies

CPA 6 : Next Generation Networks

Objective : To foster deployment and early market adoption of an “open” modern networking infrastructure by supporting industry driven large-scale experimentation.

Focus : Technology Validation

Full Service Demonstration

Usability Testing

NGN55

Page 21: Next Generation Networks in the IST Programme

Technology validation

• Fixed - mobile interworking

• Management across different network layers

• High layer protocols (e.g. IP) over WDM

• Mobile IP

• Access/core networks interoperability

• IPv6

• etc. NGN55

Page 22: Next Generation Networks in the IST Programme

Full Service Demonstration

• Scalability

• Security

• Availability

• Accounting/Settlements

• QoS

• etc.

NGN55

Page 23: Next Generation Networks in the IST Programme

Usability Testing

Application requirements in specific domains

• Virtual Museums (semantic Web)

• Distributed Engineering

• Collaborative Working (VR)

• Unified Messaging / Virtual Home Environments

CPA 6 : Next Generation Networks

Positioning

• “Next Generation” refers to NETWORKS not to applications

• “Next Generation” refers to NETWORKS not to components
