President's report for May 2015

* Welcome to our new members: Miguel Chiusano, Ron Day, Clifford Dewitt,Kathy Douthitt, Steve Dymond, David Hoenig, David Miller, Jack Panzeca,Larry Stephens, and Scott Wisdom.

* If you have not had your photo made for our new directory, this week'smeeting will be your last chance. We have 160 club members and I am sureno one can recall everyone's name and put a face to it. I know I can't. Thatis why the directory, with your photo, is so important. David Carter will betaking photos Thursday. Wear your club shirt if you have one. However, ifyou do not get your photo taken, there are a lot of goofy clip art images wecould substitute. We will not be using the old directory photos.

* If you didn't come to the all day Open Shop you missed a great time forturning and sharpening instruction, swapping tools, buying materials, scoffing up hot dogs and general camaraderie. There were about 52attendees at the height of the day.

* Congratulations to our SWAT registration scholarship winners. ToddCompton won the "SWAT never been before" registration. Susan Cardinand Jim Barkelew won the two WNT sponsored registrations and eachreceived a banquet ticket from WNT. The WNT sponsored registrations arefunded by our Christmas dinner auction. It is not too early to start thinkingabout a nice turning to donate to that.

Who’s up for a Challenge? We have some very talented people in our club. It's fun to watch how theskills of the membership, in general, are improving. I know that, personally,I have learned some techniques that I wouldn't have tried had it not beenfor the challenge.

Our challenge for April was to turn a platter.  There was some discussionon when a platter became a bowl, but it ended with all entries beingacceptable.  We had the largest turnout yet with 37 members turning 43platters.  This is over 25% of our membership, so it was a really goodchallenge.  The platter sizes ranged from saucer size to one that was 17inches in diameter.  Wood used varied from simple pine, exotic woods andone that was recycled from a 50 year old end table.  A lot of members sawJimmy Clewes demonstration and so a large number of platters had coloradded.  Hopefully this next month will have even more membersparticipating. This is a good opportunity for members to try something newand for all of us to see the creativity of our membership with the differenttoothpick holders turned

Below is a list of members who turned platters for the April challenge.

There is still time to tackle the challenge for this month and the weather isperfect for working in the shop. I hope all of you will try the tooth pickholder challenge.

See you Thursday,

Bob Wiggins

One last thing

We are in need of volunteers to operate the

video system at SWAT.

Ideally, there will be 2 people in the room

for each of the 9 sessions. One to operate

the system and one to introduce and assist.

The new system is not difficult to operate

and training will be provided.

The sign-up sheet will be on James's desk
