Thank you! I’ve been here at the Chamber for two months now and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join this incredible organization. Our members are passionate about their businesses, this Chamber and the East Metro. And as any business person will tell you, with passion you can accomplish just about anything.I’d like to make a few observations regarding where we are today and where we are headed.

First, the Chamber may represent East Metro businesses, but increasingly our members operate across the entire Twin Cities. We will never forget our roots, but I can tell

you that we have to challenge ourselves to provide value to our members not just in Maplewood or Saint Paul, but also to our members in Burnsville and Minneapolis. We can do this by ensuring that our focus on community and region never strays from the East Metro, but our focus on business value for our members encompasses the entire region.Second, our events programming has never been stronger, but it is always evolving. With recent speakers like Mike Veeck from the Saint Paul Saints and Marilyn Carlson Nelson from Carlson Companies, we have top notch speakers who our members value for their comments and their enthusiasm. We also work to ensure that Chamber events are tailored towards a variety of business needs and connect members with new opportunities, challenge them with new information, and engage them in topics important

to our community. You’ll continue to see an evolution in our events as we respond to these requirements. Finally, I’m more convinced than ever that your Chamber sets the bar for civic engagement. Our members demand that we know what is happening in local government at the city and county level. We thank our civic leaders when they are supporting the business community and, conversely, remind them of their obligations to support a vibrant business sector when they are doing things that are less supportive. I’m proud to say that we are a leader in this respect. You can count on your Chamber to maintain this tradition.

Thank you again for welcoming me to the Chamber. I’m proud to be representing an organization that is rooted in a strong past, and that has an incredible appetite for the future.

By attending even a few upcoming Chamber events you can give your business the exposure and recognition it deserves and gain a lasting network of support within your community!

The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce events encompass four key areas: Education, Networking, Public Affairs and Sports Recognition. Across all four categories, Chamber events open the playing field for business networking and leadership opportunities. The goal each year is to provide business professionals across the Saint Paul/East Metro region with a fun and interactive opportunity to meet other business professionals and sales leads, in addition to Chamber members and staff. Whether it’s an annual luncheon, young professionals event, golf tournament, membership meeting or honors gala, engaging in face-to-face communication at any of these events is hands-down the most effective way for professionals to boost their business.

To further promote such a vibrant member community, Chamber events are catered by and/or held at member locations. We work hard to ensure that our members benefit from our events!

EducationAn impressive trait of the Chamber has always been its ability to host several events each month with an educational or professional development theme. To provide members not only with an opportunity to network, but also with a forum for discussion and debate on subject matters is critical to Minnesota’s economic vitality. The backbone to a strong economy is education and it is vital that Minnesota remains a competitive force. Earlier this month we provided an education reform seminar featuring Ceciliar Retelle, manager of education policy with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, who offered insight into what necessary reforms Minnesota

must initiate to ensure that our K-12 students are not left behind.

Education also means educating our future chamber members. The Chamber's Young Professionals program is a fun and innovative way to make new contacts and become aware of the events and issues that impact the Saint Paul/East Metro area. The YPro mission is to empower young professionals to build relationships, develop professionally, increase political involvement and contribute philanthropically so as to positively contribute to the economic development and high quality of life in the Saint Paul/East Metro Area.

YPro participants, truly the young at heart, are business leaders who are investing in the future of the East Metro by contributing today. Your Chamber created YPro so that our future business leaders are engaged in building the professional and personal networks they will need as they advance their careers.

“Young Professionals is a program that is shaping tomorrow’s leaders by connecting them with a network of their peers, educating them on the current climate of the city, and providing education to hone specific skill sets.” – Adam Johnson, Visit Saint Paul

The Chamber puts forth a strong effort to educate professionals on the diverse fields that make up its member community. The Chamber’s BizTech event does just that by allowing attendees the opportunity to participate in educational and interactive demonstrations in the technology field. Technology is ever-expanding and changing the way business professionals operate, which is why Chamber BizTech events offer such an astounding educational purpose. Visitors have the opportunity to meet with industry experts and learn the best practices and business solutions. The all-day event opens the door for hands-on learning and business networking with breakout sessions, a keynote speaker and a tradeshow.

“I had the pleasure staffing the MHTA booth at last year’s Saint Paul Chamber IT Day. As a person who is quite involved in

FEATURE STORY

Minnesota’s IT industry, I was very impressed with the caliber of speakers, variety of companies and number of attendees. I was able to make wonderful, new connections for our association and look forward to attending this year’s event!” – Jenny Manogue, Minnesota High Tech Association

Public AffairsThe Chamber’s Public Affairs Series events feature a range of community, civic and business leaders who discuss public policy issues important to the business community. The Public Affairs Series ranges from candidate forums to presentations by local and state political leaders, agency commissioners, and other business leaders. When you attend a public affairs event, you are guaranteed a stimulating debate between our civic leaders. When your business concerns are put in front of the political arena, your Chamber is ensuring that your voice is heard.

“I attended the Public Affairs Series featuring the Ramsey County Commissioners this past June. It was very beneficial to hear each of their perspectives on the issues facing Ramsey County. I was able to gain information regarding projects that will affect the company I

work for and the surrounding community, and what is being done to help and attract businesses to the greater Saint Paul area during tough economic times.” —Jeanine Weinzierl, Prevolv

And watching political leaders debate isn’t the only thing our members get to experience. Your Chamber regularly brings in our political leaders, be they our Senators or Representatives, or even the Governor of the State, to provide our members with the first-hand opportunity to interact directly with the top decision makers. When members can ask Governor Pawlenty a direct question, or have a minute with Senator Klobuchar, they can be assured that their voice is being heard. Your Chamber works hard to ensure that our Public Affairs Series provide you with the political interaction that you would otherwise only read about in the newspaper or watch on TV.

Finally, we know that businesses operate in more than just a single geography. By combining public policy meetings across multiple communities, with all of our members, we enrich the debate by ensuring that all of our member’s voices are heard. When our Regional Business Council debates public policy issues, we all win.

"I have had the opportunity to take part in the Regional Business Conference Meeting since its inception. I find it one of the most valuable Business meetings I attend each year as it brings together 200 plus from around the region. I have the chance to meet business owners from the likes of Woodbury, Saint Paul, Hudson and Oakdale. Not only have the speakers and the topics been great, the whole atmosphere is about business and meeting those around you with the same goal in mind." –Marc Cove, Platinum Bank

Sports RecognitionThe Chamber serves as a platform for your networking and business needs, but is also an active supporter of the region’s exceptional sports teams. Whether it’s providing inspirational keynote speakers or recognizing great team achievements, annual Chamber sporting events allow members to support and take pride in the region’s finest players, coaches and staff.

Minnesota is the State of Hockey and Saint Paul is home to the Minnesota Wild. To help kick-off the new season and welcome the players, coaches and owners, the Chamber hosts the Wild Face-Off Luncheon. Not only does the Chamber

support the home team, but a portion of the proceeds are donated to the MSE Community Fund.

“I love the Wild Face-Off Luncheon. It is a wonderful venue that attracts all of the movers and shakers from the area. The event makes me feel proud that the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul is home to a team in the National Hockey League.” – Bob Hughes, Pioneer Press

To kick off the baseball season the Chamber hosts its Welcome Home Twins Luncheon. This event brings baseball fans together to welcome the Minnesota Twins before the start of the major league baseball season. Attendees have the opportunity to meet the Minnesota Twins players, coaches and staff. To ensure a strong emphasis is put on giving back to the community, the Chamber donates a portion of the proceeds to the Twins Community Fund. The mission of the Fund is to enrich local and regional communities by providing resources for the healthy development of children and families through an association with baseball, softball and the Minnesota Twins.
