Roads a bit more crowded? That morning or evening commute getting a bit longer? Believe me, your Chamber has noticed! That’s why our transportation initiatives are so important to our membership.

Your chamber has created three very specific initiatives surrounding transportation for the East Metro. First, we remain absolutely committed to ensuring that MnDOT solves the East Metro’s known bottlenecks. We were very pleased to see that the Highway 694/10 redesign is finally underway. This was one of our Top Ten requests to MnDOT and it was much needed for all of our members who work or ship goods through this interchange. We will continue advocating for road and bridge investments for our members.

Second, we remain committed to creating transit options for our members and their employees. Whether supporting the redesign of Union Depot or the continued construction of the Central Corridor Light Rail line, we want and expect our elected officials to provide a robust and multi-modal transit infrastructure. Transit investments pay dividends in providing options for employees to get to and from work. Did you know that over 60% of the riders on the Met Council system today are workers? Another 20% are students going to and from class. We need, want, and demand that transit investments help East Metro businesses and individuals get to and from work and school.

Finally, we will aggressively work with the Met

Council to help design the future transit system. Working with the Minneapolis Regional Chamber, we recently hired a transportation expert who will work with our members to build support for the funding, development, and implementation of a true region wide transit infrastructure. Support from the business community is key for a transit system to grow and prosper. With your support we will provide options for our employees, reduce the number of cars on the road, and ensure that the investments we make

for both transit and transportation yield long-term returns for all our members.

Since 1980, more than 1,400 graduates have been given the unique opportunity to connect with other leaders through Leadership Saint Paul (LSP). This month, yet another class will celebrate graduating from the ten-month program.

The LSP Class of 2011 has demonstrated outstanding community stewardship with the completion of educational and hands-on service projects across the Metro. Whether it was learning an Irish jig on Arts & Culture day, seeing HealthEast's CyberKnife on Health & Human Services day, or meeting top-level government leaders on

Government day, the LSP program has offered students exceptional “insider” access to raise awareness of needs and challenges affecting the Saint Paul/East Metro region.

"The LSP program accelerated both my awareness and understanding of the issues and priorities in Saint Paul and connected me to the people who care about those issues." — Jennifer Hellman, Partner & COO, Goff Public

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2011 for your participation and enthusiasm in the program!
