Apparently Ford Motor Company wasn’t sure that I knew they made cars. Last night I managed to see an ad on television and even more as I skimmed through a couple of magazines. While I say this in humor, the reality is that every business needs to remind consumers not only what they do, but why you should buy from them.

The Chamber’s brand is strengthened each day through publications, media alerts and events. Promoting the Chamber not only increases the visibility of our organization, but more importantly, that of our members. The key for members is to use your Chamber investment to build brand awareness for your own business!

Okay, how do you do it? First, remember that marketing is all about choosing the right advertising venue. For some of our members, events are a great way to build your brand. By sponsoring a hole at our annual golf tournament or breakfast at our business connection meetings, you have the opportunity to show fellow members a little bit about your company. Chamber investments are all about extending your network, and in-person events are a great way to build those personal contacts.

If in-person isn’t the best technique for you, what about our extensive electronic communications? Friday Facts, Access and Nexus are all e-publications that offer terrific advertising opportunities. What

Saint Paul is one of 25 major U.S. cities working to accelerate the adoption of solar energy technologies for a cleaner, more secure energy future. Recently, the city became home to the largest solar thermal project in the Midwest thanks to the work of Saint Paul-based TKDA and District Energy Saint Paul.

TKDA was selected by District Energy to provide planning, design and construction assistance for the solar thermal system. The project would provide more energy to District Energy’s distribution system, which heats 80 percent of the buildings in downtown Saint Paul. TKDA is a 101-year-old engineering, architecture and planning firm that has worked on several high-profile projects throughout Minnesota and beyond.

The project was made possible by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) “Solar America Communities” program and matching funds from District Energy Saint Paul. The DOE program aims to promote projects like this, which have the potential to accelerate the

adoption of solar processes while also encouraging economic growth through training, hiring and installation of solar technology. This solar thermal installation is one of 40 projects nationwide and the first to be completed.

The project involved placing the new solar thermal system onto the roof of the Saint Paul RiverCentre, the city-owned convention center. In addition to being located in a climate not historically conducive for this type of solar power, the RiverCentre was not originally structured to accommodate this type of system. However, a team of TKDA engineers welcomed the challenge and successfully designed the project which, in addition to being the largest in the Midwest, is also the first of its type in the U.S. to be integrated with a district energy system.

In designing and engineering the project, TKDA determined the size and configuration of the system, which involved installing 144 individual solar thermal collectors covering an area roughly half the size of a football field. The RiverCentre was the perfect location because it offered more than one acre of unshaded rooftop.

While the roof was not originally constructed to bear the amount of weight generated by the solar panels, TKDA engineered a skeleton system where the panels were ultimately supported by the building columns to ensure the

weight was evenly distributed.

Each solar thermal panel measures approximately 20-feet long by eight-feet tall and is connected in a series of six to seven panels on a structural

skeleton and installed at a 45-degree tilt. A pump and piping network circulate a glycol solution that begins to flow once the sunlight levels reach a certain intensity. The liquid absorbs solar energy, which flows to heat

exchangers located in the fifth-floor mechanical area of the RiverCentre, just under the roof.

The exchangers use the energy to heat water for the RiverCentre as well as warm the 162,000 square-foot building. If the energy supply is insufficient, the process will defer to the existing hot water system. If the supply exceeds demand, the excess energy is diverted into a hot water distribution loop built by District Energy Saint Paul.

In addition to the engineering challenges, it was a process to find solar thermal collectors that would operate under extreme weather conditions. TKDA researched several companies both in the U.S. and abroad in an effort to find panels that met the client’s need. While solar projects are gaining popularity in the U.S., the technology behind the development of the products is more advanced in European

countries. From TKDA’s system modeling output, District Energy St. Paul was able to select a manufacturer that offered the highest performing solar thermal panels and had the ability to generate energy even during the colder seasons of the year.

The new system, completed in March 2011, provides one megawatt of solar thermal potential captured by the 144 panels on top of the RiverCentre and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 900,000 pounds per year. It also enables a 300-percent increase in installed peak thermal capacity for District Energy Saint Paul.

Written by Chip Lederer, TKDA’s Project Manager on the Solar Thermal project. TKDA is a St. Paul-based firm that provides communities, public agencies and businesses with engineering, architecture and planning services.
