DESCRIPTION

INFINITE ONE SWEET POTATO

Complex carbohydrates have been shown to play a

crucial role in lean muscle development, energy output,

metabolic function, insulin release and muscle recovery.

These carbohydrates form muscle glycogen, the fuel

that supports muscle contraction and overall function.

Additionally, by maintaining constant blood sugar levels,

they have been suggested to assist in the reduction of fat

storage and fatigue, while simultaneously supporting the

release of insulin—the body’s natural anabolic hormone

essential for lean muscle growth.

Intense training sessions naturally lower blood sugar levels

within the body. Depending on your training regimen and

fitness goals, complex carbohydrates can be incorporated

before and/or after your workout to support your blood

sugar levels and assist in the anabolic process.

Sweet potato is an excellent complex carbohydrate that

can be utilized pre- and post- workout to maintain energy

levels in the working muscles and assist in the overall

recovery process.*

Whey Protein Isolates, More than Just a Protein

Whey protein isolate does a whole lot more than just enhance protein synthesis. Whey protein contains glutathione, which is a potent antioxidant. Thus, whey protein has potent antioxidant properties both in muscle and in liver. Another less well known fact about whey protein is that when researchers administered two groups’ identical doses of protein (whey protein vs casein protein), the whey protein group had larger increases in muscle mass at the end of the study. These results suggest that the potent biochemical antioxidant actions of whey protein mediated a reduction in cellular damage from resistance exercise in muscle, resulting in enhanced muscle mass.

Whey Protein More Anabolic than Essential Amino Acids

Back in the 90’s Essential Amino Acid tablets (EAA’s) were the most commonly consumed supplement by athletes but the new research suggests that whey protein is superior for muscle gains and recuperation. Researchers administered a dose to dose comparison and administered 15 grams of whey protein which contains roughly 7 grams of EAA and compared it to an equivalent EAA dose (6.72 grams of EAA). At the end of the study, the researchers found that whey protein resulted in greater anabolic effects than EAA when compared dose per dose. The study reported that EAA are not solely responsible for the anabolic properties of whey protein. Both doses of essential amino acids and the whey protein had identical amino acid content so there is something in whey that is enhances muscle anabolism. The researchers hypothesized that the increase in the plasma concentration of the amino acid cysteine from whey protein, which has previously been found to augment muscle protein anabolism, may have enhanced muscle protein synthesis. Whey protein resulted in a greater insulin response than EAA, which also could have augmented the anabolic actions of whey protein.

Greater Muscle Hypertrophy with Whey Protein

Muscle anabolism due to exercise and nutrient intake is influenced by various factors, such as the type of protein. Previous research has been documented that a rapidly

Infinite Labs®

Whey Isolate & Sweet PotatoThe Ultimate Performance & Recovery Stack

Recovery from exercise training is an integral component of the overall training program and is essential for optimal performance and improvement. Athletes ability to recuperate from exercise is highly variable which is determined by a person’s training status, genetic factors, sleep, factors of fatigue, and a person’s diet.

absorbed protein such as whey isolate is going to lead to a greater insulin and amino acid response than a casein protein. New research suggests that

having a whey protein isolate shake may be the most anabolic supplement you can take. In a previous study, researchers randomly assigned subjects to consume a whey protein shake before and immediately after exercise, while another group got a drink that looked and tasted exactly the same as the whey protein shake but was just a placebo (i.e. flavored water) . Neither the subjects nor the researchers knew who was getting the whey protein and who was getting the placebo drink. There was no difference between the daily protein, carbohydrate, fat, and total calorie consumption between the two groups; the only difference was a whey protein shake added before and after exercise. So how much of an effect can two little whey protein shakes make? The men performed resistance exercise for 21 weeks; at the end of the study, the subjects who consumed as little as 15 grams of whey protein before and after exercise had greater increases in muscle mass than the control group. >>

Athletes that do not recover from exercise run the risk of decreased muscle recuperation, performance, and an overall decrease in health. Muscle recovery can be enhanced thru proper supplementation, leading to the ability of athletes to perform at higher training volumes and intensities without the detrimental effects of overtraining. To adequately refuel your body and prepare it for your next workout, you need to consider pre-, intra-, and post-workout supplements.

Why All Athletes Should Be Consuming Whey Protein Isolate

The repair process starts immediately after your last set is completed, but consuming a high quality whey protein isolate rich in amino acids pre-exercise is like putting on sunblock before going into the sun—it’s protecting your muscles before the damage begins. Whey protein isolate is the highest percentage protein you can find on the market. Whey protein isolates are fat-free, are very low in carbs, and are lactose free. Adults who are sensitive to the small amount of lactose found in whey protein concentrate, then these lactose-free whey isolates are an ideal choice. This makes whey isolates ideal for those dieters trying to dramatically reduce carb consumption or bodybuilders trying to cut-up right before a contest.

<< The group that consumed the whey protein before and after exercise had greater increase in muscle quadriceps compared to the control group. Of the muscle strength variables, whey protein intake had a positive effect only in isometric leg force production in the leg press (the increase was greater than the control group). So here you have two groups doing the exact same exercises and workouts, yet a simple whey protein shake was the only difference for those who got bigger.

Whey Protein and Carbohydrates Enhances Muscle Recuperation!

After a workout, your muscles needed to be replenished with nutrients to repair muscle damage—in simple terms, skeletal muscle is like a sponge looking to soak to nutrients. That’s why you want to consume a post-exercise whey protein/carbohydrate blend. Complex carbohydrates such as those found in sweet potatoes have been shown to play a crucial role in lean muscle development, energy output, metabolic function, and insulin release and muscle recovery. These carbohydrates form muscle glycogen, the fuel that supports muscle contraction and overall function. Additionally, by maintaining constant blood sugar levels, they have been suggested to assist in the reduction of fat storage and fatigue, while simultaneously supporting the release of insulin—the body’s natural anabolic hormone essential for lean muscle growth. Combining whey protein and complex carbohydrates leads to enhanced insulin production, which acts like a firehose to shuttle amino acids into muscle. A recent study reported that post-exercise with a whey protein/carbohydrate beverage with some added leucine resulted in a ~250 % greater insulin response compared with a carbohydrate alone beverage.

Combining whey protein and carbohydrates can lead to enhanced muscle recuperation from muscle damaging workouts.

In a previous research study published in the journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers had men perform a bout of eccentric leg exercise, which is known to induce muscle damage. Performing eccentric exercise results in large muscle trauma, muscle fiber disruption, and cell swelling accompanied by an increase in immune mediators rushing to repair muscle damage. Following the resistance exercise session, participants were randomized in a double blind placebo controlled fashion into two groups: carbohydrate only or whey protein and carbohydrate. Participants consumed 1.5 g/kg.bw/day supplement (30 grams consumed immediately, and then once with breakfast, lunch, in the afternoon and after the evening meal) for a period of 14 days following a heavy eccentric contraction based resistance exercise session, consisting of 4 sets of 10 reps at 120

percent of maximum voluntary contraction on the leg press, leg extension and leg curls. The researchers reported that the men consuming whey protein isolate and carbohydrate beverage supplementation elicited improved muscle strength in the days following contraction induced eccentric muscle damage. The whey protein/carbohydrate group also had less markers of muscle damage, which may be due to the potent antioxidant abilities of whey

protein, but also the higher leucine and branched chain amino acid content of whey may

enhance muscle recuperation as well.

Protein/carbohydrate timing is essential, especially when it comes to what athletes eat after engaging in strength and

conditioning training. Eating a combination of carbohydrates and protein within 30 mins

post-workout helps maximize muscle synthesis, muscle function and decreases muscle breakdown. This occurs because this is the time that muscles experience a heightened sensitivity to insulin.

Additionally, consuming the right combination of carbohydrates to protein, in a 4:1 ratio, is associated

with faster glycogen replenishment in the muscles, better muscle protein synthesis, reduced muscle soreness and

improved muscle strength and body composition. Thus, the recipe for optimal post-exercise recovery is taking

advantage of the 30 min recovery window and choosing foods that portray the 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates to

protein.

Agmatine may support nutrient partitioning, which leads to more muscle glycogen (carbohydrates stored in muscle tissues) stored, thus more water retained in the muscle. This can lead to a “fuller” look to the muscle and enhanced muscle pumps.*

Agmatine appears to support increased NO production by playing a competitive inhibitor role of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase.*

The nutrient partitioning effects of Agmatine may be due to its potential ability to support increasing the insulin response to carbohydrates, as well as the increased blood flow to the muscle seen with increased nitric oxide production.*

Agmatine may play a potential role in supporting the hypothalamic control of luteinizing hormone (LH), thusly supporting increased levels of both hormones.*

DESCRIPTIONBeta Alanine has been shown to support muscle carnosine levels in the human body. Carnosine is a functionally active peptide that offers antioxidant properties and assists in prolonging muscular endurance, while simultaneously delaying the onset of muscular fatigue.*

CREATINE MP™

CREATINE MONOHYDRATE

Creatine MagnaPower® or magnesium creatine chelate, is a patented version of creatine molecularly bonded to magnesium to support the synthesis and regeneration of ATP. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and facilitates over 300 biochemical reactions. In addition to maintaining normal nerve and muscle function, magnesium supports a steady heart rhythm, a healthy immune system, regulates blood sugar levels and blood pressure, plays a role in energy metabolism, protein synthesis and maintains the integrity of the bone structure.*

Due to a phenomenon known as the lactamation reaction, where the creatine molecule is transformed into inert creatinine, many forms of creatine are limited from reaching their full potential. By binding the amino group of creatine with its acid group, this reaction locks up the creatine molecule, thus making it anabolically inert. This reaction has been shown to be accelerated by acidic environments, including the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract.*

Due to magnesium’s strong alkali properties, it has been shown to decrease the acidic environment that ultimately thwarts the full potential of creatine and maintain it in its fully active form. By creating magnesium creatine chelate with a patented technology that protects the creatine molecule from lactamation reaction, Creatine MagnaPower® supports the amount of physiologically active creatine available for muscle cell metabolism—ultimately supporting increases in muscle energy. Due to these larger amounts of ATP which make the muscle fibers contraction more effective, supplementing with Creatine MagnaPower® has been shown to support the speed of muscle development, strength, and play an additional role in muscle recovery.*

DESCRIPTIONCreatine Monohydrate: As one of the most popular supplements used in the athletic industry, creatine has been utilized by all types of athletes throughout the years to help promote power output, muscular energy, strength, endurance and repair. A naturally occurring substance in the human body, supplementing with creatine has been shown to increase the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to help optimize and prolong your training sessions.*

WHAT IS CREATINE AND WHY DO WE NEED IT?Lately, creatine has been going around different groups of athletes with the label “steroid.” However, you can be rest assured that creatine is not a steroid, but is a chemical compound which is produced naturally in the body by the liver, kidneys and pancreas and also found in various foods. Creatine is known for its energy releasing properties. When the body uses a lot of internal power, the generation of creatine offers the body bouts of energy. Creatine, when consumed as a supplement, shows significant results in the body’s production of energy.

The Uses of Creatine as a SupplementCreatine is used by a number of people. It is available in a powdered form, usually flavored to enhance its taste. It is supposed to be consumed by mixing it with liquids such as water or milk. Creatine is consumed by athletes, body builders, gym enthusiasts, sprinters and wrestlers. It is also beneficial to those who want to gain muscle mass.

The consumption of creatine provides the consumer with a high level of energy. This gives the consumer an opportunity to go that extra mile while working out or while performing strenuous physical activity. Those training for sporting events of high intensity are advised to consume creatine for the enhanced energy level it brings leading to harder training and faster results. Creatine is highly effective when short bursts of effort and energy are required—for example, during sprinting, playing football and playing basketball.

Why Do You Need Creatine? The consumption of creatine in moderate quantities is known to offer several health benefits. However, creatine is not only particularly useful for athletes; it also helps non-athletes in the treatment of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, depression, arthritis, congestive heart failure and has also been shown to improve cognitive ability.

There are 4 primary reasons behind the consumption of creatine.

1. Increased Workout IntensityCreatine offers a burst of energy. The more energy you have, the more you can dedicate to your workout. Increasing the intensity of your workout naturally translates into an additional set of benefits. Creatine gives you that necessary push.

2. Improved Muscular MassImproving your workout intensity leads to an achievement of higher muscular mass. Favorable muscle growth is beneficial for a well-toned body.

3. Favorable to Weight LossIt’s simple mathematics. When you have more energy to work out, you devote more time to it, and when you devote more time to exercise, the results are faster and more effective. The more time and effort you spend working out has been shown to lead to weight loss.

4. Enhanced Athletic PerformanceWhen you train well for athletic events, you improve your physical stamina. Consuming creatine, increasing your energy and dedicating more time to train yourself will help to improve your muscle mass and develop a well toned physique that contributes to the enhancement of overall performance.

HIGHLIGHTSSimilar in structure to that of creatine, Creatinol-O-Phosphate acts as an intracellular buffer to help minimize the effects of lactic acid while simultaneously prolonging anaerobic glycolysis. During strenuous activities, the cells enter a state of hypoxia (minimal oxygen), where the pH levels in the body tissues and blood begin to subside. There has been substantial research that suggests this decrease in pH levels (acidic environment) within the muscle promotes fatigue. In addition, research also shows acidosis can negatively impact muscle contractility—ultimately impairing overall athletic performance.*

TRANSFORMERS: ATHLETES IN DISGUISE

BY BRANDON LIRIO

Long before Michael Bay was massacring our childhood memories with superfluous explosions and extraneous lens flares, there were huddled masses conjuring over protein tubs and toiling over dumbbells and dripping years of regret away on treadmills and ellipticals. Transformation, especially in terms of the fitness industry, isn’t just a physical reformation of body mass… it’s a complete overhaul of mind, body and soul that takes years. Even when we can consider ourselves on the straight and narrow, the feelings of being too big or too small are still screaming back at us from the mirror. In a society dominated by over sexualization and unrealistic body images, sometimes we are searching in the dark for a real role model. When I was asked to write a column for the newest installment of this publication, my first reaction was to overhaul my brain about topics needing to be thrown into the nearest sports journal and scoured over for finite details about muscular development or cardio vascular health. I racked my brain about the efficacy of supplements in the industry and plowed through my health text books for a golden nugget people would love to argue about in the “Letters to the Editor” section of next month’s issue. Just then I got a message from one of the fine women on Team Armed Forces Europe.

A beautiful girl in her late twenties who not only was a mother, but was headed back to school for her degree while running her personal training business. One of at least three on the team who had told me before they found fitness, they suffered from an eating disorder. Here was a brilliant, strong and confident woman who most would kill to have a physical form resembling, who was so destroyed by the idea of not being good enough that she decided controlled starvation was the key. This was late on a Sunday which is when most of my athletes check in with progress photos as well as triumphs and woes from the week, so I also had at least 3 other unanswered chat windows blinking across my screen. It hit me like the steps to the Empire State Building after leg day. Transformation….

While some people complain about not having enough time to hit the gym even three times per week, Team Armed Forces Europe is 29 athletes (all with some kind of affiliation to the Department of Defense), who don’t take excuses from themselves let alone other people.

Jessica, the woman I mentioned above, is something out of a comic book. With her and her husband both going to school full time and taking care of her daughter, she’s my Co-Coach and frankly does ten times the work in an hour that I do in a day. Utilizing carb cycles while keeping cardio choices sensible and reasonable in terms of time frames, her no BS approach to fitness has helped over 3 dozen people in the year and half hit their fitness goals. A few years back, she not only scored a runner-up spot in the Bodybuilding.com transformation

contest… she did it during her own wedding. “You have to decide which you want more, the cake or the abs.” Then the trick is remembering which remorse cuts deeper… the one about not having cake, or the one where your ass won’t stop jiggling while you brush your own hair.

Jess has made her choice as to which she prefers and spends her life making sure people make the smarter choice instead of the choice of disorder and unhealthy habits as she did. Ill forever be in awe of how dedication and determination won over the voices of doubt and reliance. Based on her smoking hot frame and sharp as a knife personality, it’s clear the better option won out with this mama.

Chat window two was Cherish, a quiet and shy down home country girl with the world’s largest personality when she opens up to you. With the mentality that she would eat the protein powder dry if it meant the gains would come faster, this girl was one asset that wasn’t afraid of getting back

up after a fall. She was overweight by almost 60 pounds when she decided it was time to do something better for herself and her future. She tried out for the team in early April of 2014 but we wanted to see if her determination in getting the last of the weight off and really stepping into the competitor category was something she could do by her own will and determination or if this was just a phase. Fast forward six months and her resubmission to the team popped back across my desk. When I opened the email and saw her progress photos, I couldn’t reply back fast enough letting her know her submission was not only received, but was a shoe in for our stage roster.

As I click her current chat window, I see it’s a question about her husband (who is deployed) and coming back right about the time of our winter photo-shoot. I’m thinking she is going to ask about her absence on the day of the shoot to see him, when she instead just asks if it’s ok if she comes with hubby in tow to the shoot. My first reaction was to tell her to just take the time and see him and I reassured her there would be other shoots. Her response was something I’ll never forget.

“He’s excited to come though! Without him, I couldn’t do this and knowing he supports me enough to see me do something as silly as get my picture taken is why I love him. Rest assured we will be there!”

I saw her at the gym the following day and asked her if she was sure about her decision, not only did she assure me her dedication to the idea was mandatory (by both her standards AND his), but that she needed to get back to work so he would have the ideal wife to cart around the beach after his deployment. Not only was her dedication to fitness unwavering, her reasoning was for her loved ones and her health. Watching her trod out those last couple of pre exhaustion reps warmed my heart and made me think of my own wife and her dedication to my dreams of making it in this industry… and also made my triceps hurt. But that’s beside the point.

Next was a check in from a heart wrenching story turned beautiful that makes me realize my problems aren’t even CLOSE to excuses I could use to skip my last 10 minutes of cardio. Annett was checking in before she headed back to the states during an Army relocation with her husband. This past year, she was diagnosed with Cancer shortly after competing in Finland as a bikini athlete. Also a mother, and one hell of a supportive Army wife, she barely let the diagnosis slow her down. Based on her Instagram posts, and check-ins on Facebook, the only thing she was upset about was not being able to hit the gym. No longer than 3 weeks after she went into remission, she had rejoined the rank and file and was ready to compete again. She had recently sent me and Coach Jessica a thank you for being so supportive and “allowing” (her choice of words that I would NEVER use) her to return to the team and the stage. Here was a woman so strong she beat cancer and did it while taking care of her family, and she was

ANNETT

just thanking us for the opportunity of allowing her to follow her dreams she had to put on hold while she fought for her life.

This is where I’d like to talk about the final transformation of this article… my

own. Forget the 55lb weight gain over the last 5 years, or the overcoming of crippling anxiety.

The transformation I underwent was one much deeper. One that changed me to my very core and a transformation I owe to 29 people who taught me the most valuable lesson I’ve ever been taught. When I decided to take on this team, I was newly married and searching for something to cement me a job for after my active duty career was over in 2016. I signed the team under my business thinking what a great opportunity it would be to have my own fitness team. Over the course of the last year, these parents (some single with more than one job), fighters (of diseases and disorders that take lives every day), spouses (some who may only see their husbands a few months out of the year), athletes (across 5 federations and 7 categories) and straight up tough as nails hard ass sons of bitches opened my eyes to what this really is. This team is a collection of ordinary, everyday people who overcame the odds to become something extraordinary. Knowing these people have the faith in me to ask me to lead them to a bus stop, let alone some of the biggest stages in the world, has transformed me. I started this endeavor an overachieving and excuse riddled mediocre athlete with nothing more than an idea to capitalize on a great business opportunity. I sit here at my desk, writing these words, humbled.

Therese no people in this world I see as stronger, more driven athletes than these.

Time and time again there has been no hurdle, no disease, no schedule too difficult for them to overcome. Any time I sit with dumbbells in hand and the thought in my head that maybe that’s enough for that day, I suddenly feel 29 pairs of hands reach for my shoulders. This is about the time 29 voices call out to me and ask me not to give up. This is right about the time I realize I don’t have shit on cancer, single parenting, anorexia, obesity or disability and realize my transformation is still in progress. Where ever that progress takes me… I owe every single minute of it to them.

FATBURNERSHIGHLIGHTSRaspberry ketones are a natural phenol, organic compound responsible for creating the aroma in red raspberries. Raspberry ketones have been suggested to boost metabolic functioning and promote lipid utilization. The primary mechanism of action is a result of their ability to manipulate the enzyme lipase. Lipase facilitates the breakdown of fat cells, so the increase in lipase activity due to raspberry ketones may result in a greater amount of fat cells being broken down and burned as fuel during training sessions and everyday activities.*

In just about every gym, there is a dance class going on with women doing dance sessions to lose weight. You see lots of info-commercial’s at night showing the before and after pictures of the women who used the “dance” DVD exercise program to get in the best shape of their life, but what does the research suggest is the best way to lose weight. Researchers examined the effects of 16 weeks of practicing different exercise programmes on body composition in women. They examined 89 women aged 25 to 55 years. The subjects were randomly divided into three experimental groups (EG): practitioners of strength training group, dance, hydrogymnastics or water exercise, and a control group (CG) with sedentary women. Here were the workouts for all the women performing the exercise protocol.

Results:Measurements of body mass and height, circumferences of the chest, waist, abdomen, hips, thighs, calves, and skinfolds of the triceps, suprailiac and thigh were registered in three different moments: prior to the commencement of the training program, again after 8 weeks of training, and finally after 16 weeks of training. At the end of 16 weeks, all the groups made improvements in body composition but the water exercise and strength training group were more beneficial in reducing body fat.

Strength trainingThe ladies trained three times per week under the supervision of a qualified trainer and did 3 sets of 8–12 repetitions (weights were progressively increased) with a 2–3 min rest period on each of the 50–60 workouts in which all the major muscle groups of the upper and lower limbs were exercised with the use of either machines with weights, free weights or resistance equipment.

Dance GroupThe women trained three times per week at a moderate to

vigorous intensity, which was defined as 60 to 85% of the maximum heart rate as identified by the

calculation 220 – age for 50 to 60 minutes workouts involving activities activating all the major muscle groups in a continuous manner using basic steps and a minimum of three rhythmic variations of popular dance styles and aerobics per session with songs of a rhythmic cadence of 100 to 160 beats per minute.

Hydrogymnastics GroupThe women trained with a frequency of three days per week at moderate to vigorous intensity, defined as 60 to 85% of the maximum heart

rate using exercises that involved the major muscle groups of the upper and lower limbs with a focus on cardiorespiratory exercises, followed by muscular endurance exercises using equipment such as shin pads designed for hydrogymnastics, dumbbells, bars, plates, floating devices and pool edges with each exercise taking from 2 to 3 min to complete and the whole session lasting 45 to 55 min.

Infinite Labs (IL): Can you give the IL reader a brief overview of your background.

Dennis Dudley (DD): I am a Department of the Army Civilian (civil service) located in central Texas, with a gorgeous wife and two beautiful daughters who motivate me to be the best I can be at everything I do. I have been lifting on and off mainly for sports since I was 12. My dad was the one who introduced me to lifting weights and the foundations he grew up with and used in training for football. I lifted for strength and speed during high school and college for soccer (I played goalie). After college I joined the US Army and began lifting more for my own physical fitness as well as a bit of competition against other soldiers. I worked out with a number of power lifters where I learned about Olympic lifts as well pushing some heavy weight. After I got out of the Army I changed my typical workouts for endurance as I started road-racing motorcycles. While I did not gain a lot of mass, I did make up for it by being very lean and defined. After a major accident that exacerbated an injury from while in the Army I quit racing motorcycles and decided to put an emphasis in building some mass. The first year I put on about 15 pounds of lean mass, the next I put on 23 pounds (not nearly as lean though). I deployed to Iraq with my job in 2011 and worked out the entire time I was there, unfortunately once I returned I let everything else take center stage over my health and fitness, until the “I am Juggernaut” challenge.

CHALLENGEWINNERWe are proud to announce our 2014 Challenge “I AM JUGGERNAUT!” Winner Dennis Dudley.

Dennis displayed all the qualities of a Juggernaut while maintaining a very supportive role towards his fellow competitors. He has proven to be an unstoppable force as a husband, father and USA Army Veteran.

The 2014 I Am Juggernaut Challenge consisted of a 90 day transformation challenge which earned him a $5,000 Sponsorship, a 3 month stack, and Featured on the cover of Infinite Mag®

DENNIS DUDLEY

JUGGERNAUT2014I AM

Growing up though both my mom and dad helped motivate me to lift and exercise, they are both key figures through their support. I had always looked up not only to them, but also to body builders like Arnold, Frank Zane, Andreas Munzer, Lee Haney, and Dorian Yates. I had the opportunity, out of sheer luck, to meet Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, and Andreas Munzer on the plane flight from Orlando to Atlanta after the Mr. Olympia that year.

IL: How did you hear about the “I am Juggernaut Challenge.”? What motivated you to enter the contest?

DD: I found out about the “I am Juggernaut Challenge” when the first challenge occurred in 2011. I was deployed to Iraq and was looking for a new pre-workout that was not overloaded with fillers or other ingredients that I did not want. I found Juggernaut and joined the original Juggernaut group on Bodybuilding.com. I did not compete at that time as I was unsure of my return date from Iraq. Fast forward to 2013, I had become lazy and let myself go so I decided to get back into working out again that summer. I was a part of the Juggernaut group on Facebook and saw the upcoming “I am Juggernaut” challenge that was starting 1 Jan 2014. I talked about it with my wife, who said I should do it and that she, knew I would win it if I did. Being that I just turned 40, I decided this would be the best opportunity to step up my game and get back into the best shape of my life. I entered the contest to push myself and create even more motivation to get in the best shape possible. I remember how motivating the first contest was for all those competing and I wanted to be a part of that as well.

IL: You made a really impressive transformation, exactly how much weight and body fat did you lose during the 12 weeks. What were also the biggest mental challenges that you faced during the transformation and what did you do to overcome these obstacles?

DD: Over the course of the contest I actually gained 5 pounds and lost over 4% body fat. The first two months I actually gained a little over 10 pounds, but then really cleaned up my diet and leaned out. Honestly the biggest mental challenge for me was changing my diet to a lot more lean protein sources and cycling my carbs. It was hard to do at first since for most of my life I just ate whatever I felt like and when I felt like. The easiest way for me to overcome it was to plan out all my meals and honestly not have a huge variance in what I ate. Making sure I measured out my protein and carbs for each meal that I ate every three hours

really helped out. It got me into a habit of eating that way and at those times. Now my body is so used to it I am hungry right on schedule, my body is wanting/craving the meals and now I really don’t stray too much from the schedule. Making it a habit, made it much easier to adapt and control exactly what I eat, i.e. clean proteins, carbs.

IL: How did you feel after the transformation was over physically and mentally? Any physical changes that you noticed, maybe more energy to do things with your kids?

DD: After I completed the challenge I felt motivated to continue to make even more improvements in my physique. I had gotten bigger and leaner than had ever been in my life. I felt better than I had in years and definitely had more energy overall. In fact my kids even would work out and exercise with me in the afternoons, it made everything more fun to share that with them as well as spending time laughing and having fun with them.

IL: What was your cardio like during the 12 week challenge, was it mostly interval training or did you something else.

DD: Honestly, I didn’t do any cardio, unless you count wake boarding on the weekends at the lake. What I did is kept my rest between sets to only 30-60 seconds. I also incorporated a lot of supersets into my routines to keep my heart rate up during my workout sessions. I know this is contrary to what most people say or do, but it worked well for me. My supersets mainly are composed of using opposing muscle groups (a bicep then tricep exercise). In doing this I can use the minimal rest between sets as each muscle group gets a bit of rest already and I can push harder through 4+ sets of those exercises.

IL: Can you provide your training routine and a typical days diet during the 12 week challenge.

DD: I continue to do a 3 day on 2 day off routine. The typical schedule for me is like this: Day 1) Chest, Day 2) Legs (light higher rep), Day 3) Back, Day 4&5) Rest, Day 6) Shoulders, Day 7) Legs (heavy), Day 8) Arms, two rest days after then repeat. A typical days diet during the challenge would be 5 eggs scrambled with a single packet of oatmeal/tbsp peanut butter for breakfast (6am), 2nd meal (9am) typically was either 6 oz. of boiled and lightly seasoned chicken or sliced turkey, 3rd meal (noon) was normally 6 oz. of chicken or turkey with some sort of carbs and veggies, hard thing was finding places that met what I wanted since I ate out at lunch, 4th meal (3pm) once again 6 oz. of the chicken or turkey and some fruit, 5th meal (6pm) usually 8 oz. of a protein (fish, chicken or lamb instead of beef ) some sort of carbs as well as veggies, 6th meal (post workout) 2 scoops of Infinite Labs PRO protein powder. While this is very generic sounding my overall goals for most of the challenge was 300g Protein, 200-250 Grams of Carbs, and 100 or less grams of fat per day. I tended to cycle lower carbs on my off days and go higher (towards the 250 mark) on my heavy lifting days.

IL: What were you favorite products that you used during the challenge that were you staple products.

DD: My favorite products used during the challenge were Juggernaut HP (of course), Cyclo Bolan/Cyclo Dex combo, and the IL PRO Whey Protein Powder. The Juggernaut is one of the best PWO’s that I have ever tried/ used, it is much more subtle and doesn’t hit you like a freight train which I don’t like. You get some really great pumps from it as well as much better than normal endurance for some crazy workouts! The Cyclo Bolan/Dex combo for its testosterone boosting and regulating ability and the PRO Whey to feed my muscles after the workouts. The PRO Whey mixed like no other and tasted just like a milk shake, which made it much easier to drink than other protein powders, I have tried. A staple for me has to be the IL Multi vitamins, Glutamine, and the Cyclo REM. I have issues with sleep as it is and the Cyclo REM has helped me sleep better overall. I wake up feeling rested and refreshed.

IL: What were you favorite workout songs during your workouts?

DD: Honestly my favorite workout songs all depend on my mood for the day and, of course, what my workout is that day. I can say that songs like “I am Colossus” by Meshuggah, “Duality” by Slipknot, and “Hell Awaits” by Slayer have driven some of my best and heaviest workouts. Any of my workouts that are higher reps tend to be better/easier when I listen to some Skrillex, Texas Hippie Coalition, or the Deftones. I listen to all kinds of music and I can actually say my deadlift personal record during the challenge was done when listening to Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”!

IL: What advice would you give to anyone that wants to follow in your footsteps to make a physical transformation? Most people want to get in shape but always have reasons why they can’t, what do you say to motivate those people?

DD: The biggest thing I can say is don’t sell yourself short. If I was able to do it anyone can do it! Don’t compare yourself to already in shape people or bodybuilders as it will make you feel like you cant accomplish it. Setting smaller goals/steps in the process makes the biggest difference. Stair stepping to the bigger/main goal makes it A LOT easier as you will continue to achieve goals and feel good about it and what you are doing. Also, use a mirror, not the scale. As you gain muscle and lose fat your weight may not change much at all if not increase which can be very disheartening. Controlling and understanding what you eat and how it affects you body is one of the best things to get in control of your physical appearance. I never believed it until I did just that during the challenge. Eating good clean proteins, carbs, and fats during the week and allowing yourself a smaller ‘cheat’ meal (not a ‘cheat’ day!) will also help you stay on track with your goals and help prevent bingeing and taking a step backwards. There are a lot of great sources for help on nutrition, just make sure You listen to those who have the background and education in nutrition as a source of help in learning and understanding the nutritional aspect. If you feel like having children is a reason why you cant do it or you don’t have the time, make the time and incorporate your children into the exercise. Not only do you get to spend time with the kids, but also you get in your exercise and have fun at the same time. Yes it can all be a lot of hard work, but when you make it fun you are more likely to stick with it, get stronger, and healthier at the same time. Believe in yourself and the world is yours.

Every competitor knows that eaten carbs at night is just about the worse thing you can do for weight loss. right?? For years, health advocates recommended to eat your biggest carb meal early in the morning and then minimize carbs later during the day. There was some interesting research suggesting that carbs at night may actually lead to fat loss. It may be due to the leptin and insulin connection. Everyone has seen those pudgy rats that are lepin deficient or who don’t produce any leptin; these are otherwise known as “fat bastard” rats. Leptin is secreted from adipose tissue and basically tells the brain stop eating! Leptin “the satiety hormone” has been described as the “information provider” of adipose tissue status to receptors in the brain. It has been shown that leptin deficient have high caloric intake; people who don’t produce leptin have elevated increases in hunger and impaired satiety manifested as severe hunger, however when leptin deficient patients are given leptin, there hunger goes down2. Reduced leptin that occurs with weight loss acts as a signal of nutritional deprivation, which may be the reason why when bodybuilders go on contest diets they are always hungry! Their body-fat starts dropping and their insulin levels are low throughout the day mostly due to eating less and exercising more. When leptin levels drop, the drop initiates an adaptive response to conserve energy, manifested by increased food intake, decreased energy expenditure and suppression of the reproductive (i.e. testosterone) and other endocrine axes1. The drop in leptin levels from calorie restriction may also be a signal for reduced testosterone levels that occur when going on a diet. One of the stimulators of leptin levels in insulin, when insulin levels are increased acutely, there is increased energy expenditure, decreased food intake and basically a reversal of all the negative affects of low leptin levels. That why a cheat meal here and there can help the weight loss process by stimulating leptin secretion and keeping your metabolism going.

Insulin Stimulates Leptin ReleaseSeveral studies have reported a stimulatory effect of insulin on leptin synthesis and/or secretion in man. Insulin is considered to be a potent regulator of leptin, because plasma insulin concentrations decrease during fast and increase after re-feeding in parallel with plasma leptin levels6. Fasting plasma levels in men correlate with leptin levels; in insulin resistant men high insulin levels are associated with increased leptin levels10.

Its not glucose levels that increase leptin levels, but insulin levels as a previous report indicated that a single insulin injection increased leptin mRNA expression severalfold, independent of glucose concentration11. Several studies using isolated white adipocytes reported that insulin increased leptin secretion7, 8, 9. So when leptin levels start falling it signals a rise in appetite, that’s why rat’s that don’t produce leptin just want to eat all day. Previous studies have described a typical diurnal pattern of leptin secretion that falls during the day from 8 AM to 4 PM hours, reaching its lowest at 1 PM and increases from 4 PM with a peak at 1 am12, 13. Ironically, this crucial hormone responsible for satiety is at its highest levels when individuals are sleeping. Adiponectin is another hormone that plays a role in energy regulation as well as in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, reducing serum glucose and lipids, improving insulin sensitivity and having an anti-inflammatory effect3. Researchers have previously been reported that you can alter the circadian rhythms of leptin by diet. For example, during Ramadan (fasting during the day and consuming an enriched carbohydrate dinner). These studies have demonstrated that the diurnal pattern of leptin secretion can be changed 4,5.

Carbohydrates Eaten at Night Lead to Enhanced Weight Loss

So having higher leptin levels during the day is going to keep you hunger better controlled, so the key is to maintain leptin levels while dieting, yet the role of when carbohydrates are consumed and leptin levels has not been studied yet.

On Low Calorie Diet, Eating Carbs at Night Enhances Fat Loss Ok, so back to our study, the researchers from Israel thought that if leptin is high at night from leptin circadian rhythm which rise at night than eating a carbohydrate enriched meal while on a low calorie diet may cause a super spike in insulin that may cause a greater rise in leptin which may lead to reduced appetite throughout the day. The study group consisted of a seventy-eight overweight police officers (BMI >30) were randomly assigned to experimental (carbohydrates eaten mostly at dinner) or control weight loss diets for 6 months. On day 0, 7, 90, and 180 blood samples and hunger scores were collected every 4 hours. The experimental group was prescribed a standard low-calorie diet (20% protein, 30–35% fat, 45–50% carbohydrates, 1,300–1,500 kcal) providing carbohydrates mostly at dinner, whereas the control group received a standard low-calorie diet (20% protein, 30–35% fat, 45–50% carbohydrates, 1,300–1,500 kcal), providing carbohydrates throughout the day. The high carb at dinner group was basically kept on a low carb diet during the day and told to eat the most carbs at dinner.

The dinner consisted of either:

Alternative A:2–4 pieces of bread/4–8 pieces of reduced calorie bread + 1/2 cup of white cheese/1 slice of yellow cheese/ 2 tablespoons of humus/egg/1/2 a can of tuna fish/4 slices of pastrami + vegetable salad + 1 teaspoon of oil/ tablespoon of tehina/1/4 avocado/1 tablespoon of dressing + fruit/fruit yogurt/diet ice-cream/2 biscuits/1 cookie

Alternative B:1–2 cups of cooked rice/pasta/puree/corn/legumes/1–2 potato/1–2 sweet potato + 1 tablespoon of gravy + boiled vegetables/vegetables salad + 1 teaspoon of oil/ tablespoon of tehina/1/4 avocado/1 tablespoon of dressing + fruit yogurt/diet ice-cream/2 biscuits/1 cookie

Both low calorie diet groups lost weight, but here is the shocking results: greater weight loss, abdominal circumference, and body fat mass reductions were observed in the experimental diet where carbs were eaten mostly at dinner in comparison to controls who ate carbs all day long14. Also to further shock people, significant improvements in glucose balance and insulin resistance, lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol) and the inflammation markers (CRP, TNF-α, IL-6) were measured in the group that ate most of their carbs late at night! Also, subject’s appetite scores were lower when the subjects consumed most of their carbs later in the evening. The researchers speculated that the favorable increases in weight loss may have been due to the enhances leptin levels that occurred with the high carbs at night groups. Additionally, the carbs at night group had higher Adiponectin levels, which can explain the lower inflammation levels and improvements in insulin and glucose scores. Thus, dietary manipulation in which higher carbs at dinner will maintain higher daytime leptin concentrations during daylight hours in weight loss process may be beneficial.

BCAA

BCAA’s: Among some of the most beneficial supplements in any sports nutrition program are the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). These are the essential amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine which can only be provided through food or supplements. As the building blocks for protein, BCAAs are unique in that they are metabolized in skeletal muscle. Take BCAAs before and after exercise to support the anabolic effects of your training regimen. Numerous studies have demonstrated the anti-catabolic effects of taking BCAAs, and supplementing your diet with them can assist in faster muscle recovery, prolonged endurance and increased metabolic fuel during exercise.*

BCAA MAY HELP TO:

• SUPPORT REDUCING POST EXERCISE FATIGUE*

• SUPPORT DECREASED MUSCLE PROTEIN BREAKDOWN*

• SUPPORT MUSCLE PROTEIN SYNTHESIS*

BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids)BCAAs are the essential aminos: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. The combination of these amino acids makes up approximately one third of skeletal muscle tissue in the body. As the building blocks of protein, they play a major role in the process of protein synthesis. As food goes through the digestion process, the protein that the food contains is broken down into individual and short chains of amino acids; they are then minute enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. After a training session, the body is in a catabolic state (breaking down of muscle tissue) with a deficit in protein synthesis. This is due to the MAPK signaling pathway that is activated post exercise, which is the body’s own way of signaling muscle growth. The purpose of this pathway is to increase protein synthesis, however it is not as effective as when combined with the BCAA signaling cascade. These two pathways act independently from one another, so when adequate amounts of BCAAs are consumed after a workout, the body enters a greater state of hypertrophy with a positive amount of protein synthesis.*

Beta-AlanineBeta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid and is the only naturally occurring beta-amino acid. Beta-alanine’s effects are realized by enhancing the synthesis of carnosine, a dipeptide (two amino acids) intracellular buffer. When beta-alanine is combined with BCAAs it has been shown to reduce post workout muscle soreness from exercise,

suggesting that beta-alanine in combination with BCAAs have syntergistic effects on speeding up the recovery process. Beta-alanine can also enhance creatine’s ability to reduce body fat and build lean muscle tissue in combination with resistance training.*

N-Acetyl-L-TyrosineN-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is a form of the amino acid tyrosine that is much more bioavailable than regular tyrosine supplements. It is utilized in the body to produce numerous hormones and neurotransmitters, including dopamine, thyroid hormone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. The addition of the acetyl group to tyrosine elicits an increased ability to enter the brain, thusly making its effects more concentrated and enhancing the effectiveness of tyrosine. N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine serves as a building block used to make various proteins and chemicals that the body can utilize.*

L-PhenylalanineL-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid essential to the process of protein synthesis. L-Phenylalanine can be converted into the amino acid L-tyrosine and later to norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine. L-Phenylalanine may also aid in the regeneration of damaged muscle tissue, often caused by strenuous sports and activities that require muscular endurance.*

Are you Sleeping enough for Optimal Testosterone Production?

sleep architecture throughout the night prevents the increase in testosterone11. It has also been shown, at least in young men, that the sleep-dependent increase in testosterone occurs irrespective of whether the sleep occurs at night or for an equivalent duration during the day. The increase in testosterone with sleep time and a decrease during time awake is stable within an individual, but in turn there are large individual differences12. Testosterone is not subject to circadian variation in the same way that cortisol. There is sleep-dependent increase in testosterone that requires 3 hours of slow wave sleep or perhaps a bit longer with increasing age. Testosterone remains elevated for the duration of sleep. The subsequent decrease in testosterone depends on the duration of wakefulness; decreasing more with prolonged wakefulness13.

Based on several studies, sleep has more of an impact on testosterone levels than previously thought.

Researchers from China collected the blood from 531 Asian males between the ages of 29 and 70. Researchers collected questionnaires and sleep habits of the men as well. The researchers found that many men above age 50 years of age were sleeping less than 6 hours a night compared to men in their 40’s. The researchers found that the less men slept, the lower their

Not making the kind of gains you want in the gym? Your diet and training maybe flawless but there is one variable that may be missing: sleep. Two studies have recently correlated resting testosterone with amount of sleep in men1, 2. Researchers have speculated that the use of the internet at night, late night television, and sleeping with your cell phone that goes off all night long can compromise normal sleep rhythms of many young men. Many Americans are sleeping less than the recommended 8 hours per night3; interestingly sleep also decreases with age.

Plasma testosterone levels vary in a circadian manner, higher on waking and decreasing to a low point at the end of the day. Superimposed on this are burst-like increases in testosterone production that occur every 90 min or so7, 8. Plasma testosterone levels begin to increase with the onset of sleep, and in young men peak at the first REM sleep episode and remaining at that level until waking9; the longer the REM sleep latency the slower the rise in testosterone. More recently it has become clear that the production of testosterone is dependent on sleep generally reaching the peak during the first 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and at least in young men at about the time of the first REM episode10. Total fragmentation of normal

serum testosterone tended to be. There was a direct correlation between sleep and testosterone levels; this finding was independent of age, total body fat, and exercise intensity7.

It was previously reported that men who slept between 4-6 hours had lower testosterone levels than man who slept more than 8 hours4, 5. In this study, the relationship between sleep loss and testosterone and free testosterone (bioavailable testosterone) were lower in men who slept for between 4 – 6 hours than those who slept more than 6 hours give credence to the suggestion that man who sleep less than 6 hours a night have lower testosterone and free testosterone than those who sleep more than 6 hours. An adequate nightly sleep is a key component of man’s recuperation process following a day’s work. This recuperation process is the engine for the regeneration of alertness required for optimal cognitive and physical functional capacities. The current study mentioned was the observation that total testosterone and bioavailable testosterone were highest in men who slept between 6 hours to 8 hours or more gives my support to an earlier study that the optimal sleep duration is about 8 hours6. Some athletes may only sleep 6 hours a night, but based on the current study men who slept less than 6 hours of sleep had less serum testosterone production than the men who slept 8 hours of sleep a night.

Whey Protein Taken 3 Times a Day Cuts 14% Abdominal Fat Over the last year, scientists have come to conclude that not all carbohydrates are the same. For example, certain carbohydrates are absorbed more rapidly and cause a rapid release of insulin, whereas other carbohydrates rich in fiber cause a slower release. Much like carbohydrates, protein function has been found to differ based on protein sources. It has been reported that whey protein can enhance weight loss compared to soy protein and other sources because of its high-branched chain amino acid content. It can now be concluded that proteins have different biological effects as well. The branched chain amino acid leucine signals intracellular pathways regulating amino acid oxidation and gluconeogenesis4. Whey protein (100 g) contains about 24 g of BCAA5, which have been associated with improved insulin sensitivity and satiety6. The high BCAA content of whey protein may make it superior for fat loss compared to other proteins such as chicken or beef. In the journal of Nutrition Research, researchers reported that whey protein could help reduce belly fat compared to other protein sources.

Whey Proteins Inhibits Appetite Signaling

Whey protein modulates several hormones that are conducive for weight loss. The researchers explained that whey protein is a potent stimulator of Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide (GIP), also known as the glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide. It is now believed that the function of GIP is to induce insulin secretion. Relative to that, it is known that whey protein is a strong stimulator of GIP secretagogue, possibly through bioactive peptides present in whey or formed during its digestion. The appetite suppressing effects of whey may be due in part to the rise in GIP or thru some other mechanism (i.e. mTOR).

Acute studies have reported that whey protein isolate (60 grams per day) evaluated over six months resulted in significantly lower hyperinsulinemia (less fat storage potential), lower cortisol levels (lean muscle preservation) and reduced ghrelin release (satiety enhancement). A previous study released in Nutrition & Metabolism reported that people on whey protein supplementation lost more weight than a control group receiving maltrodextrins in conjunction with a calorie-restricted diet. Each subject was instructed to consume one supplement 20 minutes before breakfast and one supplement 20 minutes before dinner. The whey protein supplement contained 10 grams of protein per serving as a combination of intact whey protein and peptides. It also contained minerals that were purified from milk. The control group received an isocaloric beverage containing maltodextrin. After 12 weeks, weight loss was consistently higher in the whey protein subjects, primarily the result of losing body fat (subjects taking whey protein lost 6.1 percent of their body fat mass). The whey protein group subjects also lost significantly less lean muscle mass compared to control subjects. Whey protein may be the perfect fat-loss supplement when dieting for an important event or for targeting fat loss while maintaining lean muscle1. Since whey is nutrient dense but relatively low in energy (~4 kcal/g), supplementation is an efficient method to promote skeletal muscle anabolism while promoting catabolism in fat cells and therefore is hypothesized to improve both muscle growth and fat loss.

A new study just released reported that whey protein taken three times a day contributes to fat loss in the abdominal region. The study examined the effects of timed ingestion of supplemental protein (20-g servings of whey protein, 3×/day), added to the habitual diet of free-living overweight/obese adults and subsequently randomized to either whey protein only, whey protein and resistance exercise, or a whey protein and multimode exercise training program [protein and resistance exercise, intervals, stretching/yoga/Pilates, endurance exercise for 16 weeks. The three protein ingestion of 23g of whey protein were (1) within 1 hour of waking in the morning, (2) mid-afternoon or within 30 min following an exercise session and (3) within 2 hours of going to bed at night (total protein intake ended up at ~1.3-1.5g per kg body weight).

Otherwise, all participants were instructed to consume their habitual diet ad libitum throughout the 16-wk intervention. At the end of the study, all groups lost body weight, fat mass, and abdominal fat; however, the group doing multimode exercise training program [protein and resistance exercise, intervals, stretching/yoga/Pilates, endurance exercise lost significantly more body weight and fat mass and gained a greater percentage of lean body mass. In conclusion, the researchers reported that exercise training and timed ingestion of whey protein added to the habitual diet of free-living overweight/obese adults, independent of caloric restriction on total and regional body fat distribution, insulin resistance, and adipokines.

How to Shock Your Legs into

New Growth in Three Weeks

without Squats!

If you ask any athletes how to get bigger legs, most will tell you that you have to squat. How would you like to add 2 lbs. of lean muscle mass to your legs without squatting in three weeks. That’s exactly what researchers reported in the latest Journal of Exercise Physiology in which 19 recreationally active male subjects completed a three-week high intensity interval training on a cycle ergometer. The other interesting finding of the study was that the leg muscle growth occurred in the absence of acute increases in GH production.

The first 3 training sessions consisted of four 30-sec repetitions at 7.5% body mass with 4 min of active recovery at 50-sec between each repetition. Training sessions 4 to 6 (weeks 2) consisted of 5 repetitions, and sessions 7 to 9 (week 3) consisted of six 30-sec maximal repetitions. During each repetition, each subject was encouraged verbally to provide maximal effort.

Ritsche, Kevin, et al. “Acute Exercise-Induced Growth Hormone is Attenuated in Response to Short-Term, High-Intensity Exercise Training.” Journal of Exercise Physiology (2014).

At the end of three weeks of HIIT training, the major findings of this study indicated significant increases in total and leg lean mass, albeit only non-significant reductions in body fat - changes which went hand in hand with a profound increase in exercise performance. Its interesting that just by doing HIIT training on a cycle to all out failure led to some significant increases in leg growth without ever getting under a squat bar. The other interesting finding was that there was leg growth despite attenuated reductions in GH responses that occurred with the sprint training. This attenuation in GH release occurred after sequentially increasing workload each week of training; and in concert with the increase in lean mass of the lower extremities and greater peak power anaerobic performance.

The training protocol consisted of 4 to 6 repetitions of 30-sec maximal sprints and was performed three times per week for 3 weeks. One day of rest intervened each training session. One day of rest intervened each training session. At the end of three weeks of HIIT training, the major findings of this study indicated significant increases in total and leg lean mass.

Researchers wanted to examine the time course and magnitude of the GH adaptation, anthropometric and anaerobic performance changes to 3 weeks of high-intensity sprint exercise training on a cycle ergometer using a weekly measure of hormonal responses and exercise performance. The training protocol consisted of 4 to 6 repetitions of 30-sec maximal sprints and was performed three times per week for 3 weeks. One day of rest intervened each training session.

JOINT SUPPORT CALCIUM PYRUVATE

MULTI VITAMINS

Joint support is especially necessary for those individuals who subject themselves to a highly active lifestyle; most athletes and bodybuilders are constantly loading and unloading their bodies depending on their particular training regimens. Joint support combines glucosamine and other vital ingredients to help promote healthy connective tissue and cartilage.*

Calcium Pyruvate is a natural combination of two nutrients—Calcium and Pyruvic Acid. This combination yields a stable compound known as pyruvate salt that is easier for the body to absorb than calcium alone. Calcium Pyruvate supports energy production by assisting in the transport of glucose from the bloodstream to the working muscles, making it a perfect complement for any training regimen.*

An ideology is a set of conscious and/or unconscious ideas which constitute one’s goals, expectations, and actions. Training to basically compete in about 5 different 5K-8K “races” in the matter of 18 hours or so, Active Rest is the most paramount ideology in play. How, when, how much, and how do I rest, relax, and then re-engage my body to do it all AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN. Each member of the team is going about this in a different way, and it has a lot to do with their ‘system’ of training. For some, they use more traditional body building and running method variations, for others – functional strength methods lend themselves to workouts that incorporate lower intensity movement with higher intensity movement. Speed work and strength work. These are all important attributes that go into being a successful RELAY ultra runner.

The normal tendency in the gym is to grind out your workout until you fall to the ground in exhaustion, then wait until you feel ready to go again. Research has shown that stopping completely to catch your breath actually causes your heart to work unreasonably harder! So, things as simple as jogging while you are still in severe oxygen debt, and not stopping until your heart rate and breathing are about halfway back to normal can actually be a great way to keep performance high.

In this week’s blog, #TeamInfiniteForce takes us through what a week in the life looks like, and it’s not just running, running, running. That is NOT our ideology.

Active Rest: the Key to Competing Over & Over Again

MONDAYManny Lirio’s workout week starts out Sundays with shoulders and legs. Monday is his chest and triceps training day, followed by back and biceps on Tuesday. Rinse and repeat for the next 3 days. It has been so for the past 2 weeks and will continue for the next 4. “This week started out a bit rough as I was fighting a cold, but I was able to prevail and successfully fight it out without

letting it fully develop.” Manny actually took a break from running this month, but is still incorporating cardio in every workout, by following an active rest period between each set consisting of one minute cardio acceleration. Things like rope jumping, step ups, lateral bounds, running in place, kettlebell swings, or mountain climbers. Once the New Year kicks in he will incorporate 3 running days into the workout mix and he will have to change his nutritional marks accordingly to maintain his new weight loss goals of getting back down to about 170lbs.

CURRENT NUTRITION:6-7 meals for a total of 3,200 calories macronutrients falling at 285 grams of protein, 90 grams of fat, and 310 grams of carbs.

TUESDAYIt was a very successful week for #TeamInfiniteForce runner Brandon Atkins whom completed his first Half Marathon! He took three days off following the race and ran on Wednesday for a total of 6 miles and also ran on Friday for 4 miles. He pretty much took the rest of the week following the race easy to allow his body to properly

recover, frequently re-fueling with grape Infinite Force after his runs to help the quality of recovery. “As of today I am feeling more and more confident as the Ultra Marathon approaches.” Starting this week, he will return to his regular training schedule and also start implementing core workouts to help strengthen his core in an effort to increase speed. He will also incorporate runs twice-a-day for one day out of the week to help simulate what it will be like to run in the Rouge-Orleans. His training method is that of a more traditional runner, and has shown impressive speed already in his workouts, currently training between 6 min and 7min per mile!!!

WEDNESDAY#TeamInfiniteForce’s Allen Stewart starts everyday off at 4:30am with a 1 hour raw workout, and then 75 minutes of Army PT! He is no stranger to having to give max effort time and time again, which should serve him well in the Rouge-Orleans.

A “raw” workout might look something like this:3 rounds of:Physio Ball stabilized Push Ups x20Reverse Push Ups x20Russian Twists with 45lbs x20Barbell Row to Press x10Jacobs Ladder x2 minRing Pull Ups x10Dips x15Weighted Sit Ups x30Inverted Push Ups x10Stairstepper x2 minLeg Lifts x20Manmakerz with 40lb DB’s x10Toes to Bar x10All that can be said… “’Merica”

THURSDAYFor teammate Kenny Hinrichsen it was a difficult training week. He had lots of personal stuff going on as he had a dear friend pass away, and work life as an architect is extremely busy for some reason right now. Kenny likes to push hard in the time that he has in the gym. In that sense, this week was no different! Here was a sample workout day for the man known as Mr.360.

The workout doesn’t last but 60-75 minutes, but the effort put into each part of the workout is of a different mindset, requiring its own mental preparation and release.“If you can’t have fun with your workout clothing, you’re not doing it right.” Merry Christmas everyone!

FRIDAYThis week has been a bit of a challenge for Team Captain Ashley Lauing. Battling with an injured calf has severely impaired her ability to run and get the quality high endurance training needed to get prepared for the race. She has been pushing herself any way possible to get there! Monday’s workout was by far one of the hardest she’s ever done. It was a 30 minute non stop circuit of 50 seconds burpees (minimum of 10), into treadmill, into elliptical, into recumbent bike, with 10 seconds of active rest between activities, which was essentially enough time to run to the next machine and get started. Tuesday was 3 miles of interval running on the treadmill which provided her the opportunity to push through some pain and learn a little bit more about what she’s made of. Wednesday and Thursday have been shorter runs and more elliptical training all followed by extensive therapy on her leg and soaking it in ice water 2-3 times a day. Friday is a rest day this week. “Next week I start back on workouts 2x/day morning abs and body weight exercises with ice therapy and regular cardio/weights during my lunch hour.”
