The Apulia Region is home to 4 million citizens. The Region has an impressive coastline spanning 874 km (543 miles). It is the third longest after the Islands of Sicily and Sarde-gna. The cities along the coast reveal their fascinating history amongst the small cobble-stone alleys, monumen-tal “palazzi,” cultural events, the arts, and of course the tastes of Southern Italian cuisine; all with the backdrop of one of the most beautiful and pri-stine seas in the country. While Apulia has been able to main-tain its rich culture, history, and traditions, at the same time it is an active player in innovation and tech-nology. It may remain one of the country’s main agricultural hubs, yet other production sectors include:
mechanics, petrochemicals, steal, textile, garments, footwear, furniture, and food industry. Our recent in-vestments are concentrated on new sectors including: renewable energy, mechatronics, aerospace, information and communication technologies, and tourism.Up until 2005, Apulia's economy fell well behind other Southern Italian regions. Today, according to both the Bank of Italy and the Svimez (Association for the Industrial Deve-lopment of Southern Italy), Apulia's economy has become the locomotive for the South of Italy.

In the last 5 years, Apulia has become the nation's leader in production of electricity from wind and solar energy sources. We were the first Region in Italy to enact the “Regional Environmental Energy Plan”, a system of rules that favor the development of renewable energy resources by attrac-ting investments from the rest of the na-tion and abroad.

In 2006, our Government passed an important law concern-
ing our 800 km-long (500 miles) coastline. The law protects
the area from real estate speculation, sets up measures to
prevent the erosion of our coasts, and helps mother nature
restore its beaches, and unique flora and fauna.

We have taken major steps in pre-serving the beauty of our land, improving air quality levels, and protecting our seas and coastline. Our Government has also promo-ted recycling as the main source of waste disposal.

Taranto’s children told us their stories about living with the largest factory in the country. Through their eyes we witnessed the poisonous gasses that are released from the factory’s many chimney stacks. They told us about their fears and shared the horrors that they see day by day. Our decision to take action started from the children: from their letters, their drawings, their dreams, but also from their nightmares.

Taranto is Apulia’s second largest city. In 1961, construction
efforts began for the construction of ILVA, Europe's larg-
est steal factory. The factory was supposed to be the pride
and hope of an entire community. Instead, it has become
the main cause of this city’s rising mortality rate. Taranto’s
main factory contributes substantially to the nation’s emis-
sions of air pollution through the release of furans, dioxins,
and other toxic gases.
In December 2008, we decided to enact the Antidioxin
Law, the first of its kind in Italy. The law goes beyond the
current national limits permitted. It reduces the limit of di-
oxins permitted to values equivalent to those of the Europe-
an Union’s 2004 “Aarhus Protocol,” approved by EU mem-
ber states, but never enforced by the Italian Government.
Our regional law states that by December 31, 2010, all com-
panies must respect the limit of 0.4 nanograms per cubic
meter of dioxin and furan emissions permitted. With this
couragous act, we hope to restore clean air to the City of
Taranto, and at the same time protect the jobs of thousands
of factory workers. It is just another step towards a quality-
based economy.

aPulia film commissioN Since its beginnings in 2007, the Apulia Film Commission,
a public company that promotes the film industry in Apulia,
has attracted over 100 new productions;
from both national and international firms.
We’ve also seen the birth of the The Bari International
Film and Television Festival, which this year celebra-
tes its third year. It is a special occasion for the film industry
to discover Apulia.
In 2010, two production hubs or Cineporti were inaugura-
ted in Bari and Lecce. These hubs are fully furnished with
casting rooms, set and costume design ateliers, hair and
make-up facilities, warehouses, exhibit centers, and more.
“Loose Canons” a film produced in collaboration with the

5.2 million euros(us $ 7.3m) invested to promote apulian cinema/audiovisual activities.
PuGlia souNds In 2010 “Puglia Sounds” was created with the goal to create
synergies between the production and the distribution of
Apulian, Italian, and international music scenes. This is the
first project of this nature in Italy; a revolution for who pro-
duces music, who distributes music, or who simply enjoys

la Notte della taraNta Since 1997, in the small town of melpignano, in southern
Puglia, over 100 000 people from all over the world attend
the Notte della Taranta (The Night of the
Tarantula). It is the most important music festival dedi-
cated to the ancestral sounds of the Pizzica Salentina.
The event's closing concert mixes traditional sounds with
more contemporary beats—from world music, to rock, from
jazz to classical music. By inviting world artists to per-
form on a single stage, the festival aims to promote peace
amongst different cultures.
The night of the Tarantula Orchestra has become one of
Italy’s more important ensembles; exporting their unique

With Free the Good, the Apulia Region intends to favor the creation of synergies amongst private and public administrators who support innovation and modernization, who promote a legal use of these goods, and who help develop new industries and work opportunities for its citizens. Culturally, this is a major step towards restoring harmony to populations devastated by generations of repression.
libera il beNe (Free the Good):Our administration has made fighting organized crime
a priority. Along with other non-profit organizations like
Libera, we firmly support the re-integration into society
of goods confiscated from illegal activities. Goods such as
land and real estate are sold to agricultural cooperatives
and other ethically sound organizations. We empower our
citizens to decide along with local administrators how best
to introduce these goods back into the community.

For the 2010 Regional Elections campaign, nichi Vendola launched a grass-roots movement called la fabbrica di nichi (nichi’s factory).

The fabbricas are places, both physical and virtual, open to anyone who believes
in what mr. Vendola stands for.
A horizontal organizational structure promotes active participation
from everyone who wants to get involved.
In less than one year, the fabbricas have grown to over 500, spanning all of Italy
and now also the rest of the world. The fabbricas present
outside of Italy are generally created by Italians who have
left their country of origin, unhappy with the country’s
current socio economic and political situation.
These are the people who aspire for a radical change
in the nation’s governing body and hope
to one day return home.
Ideas may come from the central organizing committee
or from an individual fabbrica.

mr. Vendola is very popular amongst the younger generations and has
attracted a segment of the population that has either lost
hope in its leaders or who has never voted before.
That is why we have focused our communication acknowled-
ging the power of internet. Our main channels of communi-
cation are our website www.nichivendola.it
and social media – Facebook, Youtube, Twitter,
and Flickr. Today, La fabbrica di nichi is considered by
many a new way of doing political communication in Italy.

POST: LA POESIA È NEI FATTI.Gli avversari lo chiamano parolaio, in-cantatore. E quando vogliono esagerare, poeta, come se fosse un insulto.
Ma non insultano Nichi Vendola. Senza accorgersene, insultano i Pugliesi.

Sinistra ecologia libertà, con Vendola (Left Ecology Liberty with Vendola) celebrated its
founding convention in Florence, this past October.
Over 1600 delegates from all over Italy, participated at the
convention. It is a new left-wing party, whose
mission is based on peace and nonviolence,
work and social justice, knowledge
and a green economy.
It is a party founded on the principles of solidarity,
cooperation, and direct participation
amongst its members.
It promotes the major forms of democracy and participation
in Italian society, starting with the use of primaries
to elect the leader of a coalition.
It adheres to an ethical code for legality and
transparency, and contrasts any form of mafia or other
illegal activity amongst its members, its candidates, and
representatives within the institutions.
SEL applies equality amongst genders,
and in its governing body neither of the two genders can
have a representation under 40%. Furthermore, it guaran-
tees parity amongst participants in the decision-making
process; regardless of their age, gender, nationality, sexual
orientation, and gender identification.
SEL has recently elected nichi Vendola as its President.
SEL is an organization which was capable of enrolling al-
most 50 thousand supporters in little more than one month.
Enrollments where individually completed via internet.
It does not currently have elected representatives
in Parliament, as during the last national elections
the left-wing coalition was not able to achieve 4% of the
vote; the minimum needed to nominate representatives in
both the House and the Senate.
The party is, however, widely diffused on a local level; star-
ting with nichi Vendola as Govenor of the Apulia Region.
Today’s polls accredit SEL with a popularity rate at 6%, and
is in constant growth.
Within the same polls, nichi Vendola is considered to be the most credible leader in a center-left coalition, and best running mate against Silvio Berlusconi;
ahead of the leader of the Partito Democratico
(Democrat Party), today’s major opposition party in Italy.
