Shiftisanapparatusthatcelebratestransformation.Thisprojectmaterializesanddramatizestheephemeralqualityoflight.Byharnessingthisperformativephenomenon,lightbeginstoactasacatalystforthetransformationofthedailyandseasonaluseofthecommunitycenter.Thephysicaledgesofthebuilding,theroofline,thegroundandtheprojectedpatternsoflightcreateachangingrelationshipbetweenthecommunityanditsusers.
Nietherobjectnorlandscape,thebuildingemergesasanaggregationofinteriorandexteriorroomsunifiedbyaveiloflight.Lighttranscendsthephysicalthresholdofthebuildinganditsprograms,selectivelyblurringinteriorandexteriorandparkspacestogether.(courtyardrender)Becauseofthisfieldlikecondition,thebuildingisencodedwithinherintmutativecapabilitytomergespacestogetherortoactasdistinctentitiesinresponsetolightconditionsorcommunitydesires.

Aspeoplepercolatethroughthebuilding,theycaneitherbreezethroughthepublicspacesorlingerinthesemi-poolingspaces.Theexteriorisalwaysactiveandtheinteriorcanbeclosedoffatnight.

Wildrice,Zizaniaaquaticaas it iscalledbybiologistsormanoominas it iscalled inOjibweisatypeofannualaquaticgrasswhichgrowsintheheadwaterofslowflowingstreamsandriversorinshallowpostglaciallakes.ItisnativetothenorthEasternUnitedstatesandSouthEasternCanada,wherethelandscapehasbeendefinedbytheLaurentideglaciationandthecoldwintersprovidethenecessarygerminationconditionsformanoominseeds.

TheSerpentMoundsatRicelakewerebuiltaround350-300CE.Littleisknownaboutthemiddlewoodlandperiodoutsidewhathasbeendiscoveredthroughburialmoundssuchasthis.Asaresulttheserpentmoundsareacriticallyimportantsiteforunderstandingthehumanhistoryoftheregion.

TheHiawathaarethelivingstewardsoftheSerpentMoundssite.Theyarenotdirectdecendantsofthemoundbuilders,buttheyshareasimilarlifeoutlookandculturalheritage.Oneofthemainlinksbeingthewayinwhichbothcultureswereoncedirectlytiedtotherythmsofthe land. TheHiawathaareno longerable tokeepthesiteoperationalandneedafinanciallyviablesolutiontoreopenthesitetothepublic.
TheSerpentmoundsite,isabelovedandbeautifulelementofthePetterbouroughcommunity.Findingawaytoreopenthesitewhilestillpreservingthesacredheritageofthepenninsulaisinthebestinterestofeveryoneinvolved.

Ourprojectisintendedtopermitandencouraceconnectionsthroughthesynchronous,rhythmicmovementoftwopeople.Theprimaryconnectionlogicofoursurfaceutilizestheintrinsictrigonalgeometryofourbasemoduletoformasheet.Thesecondarystructureofthesheetwasdefinedbytheconceptofdance.Wedeterminedtwomethodsinwhichasheetmightencouragedance:toundulateandtodecay.Undulationswouldpushandpullthebodyintonewcontortionsbasedonthecurvesofthestructure,whileapatternofdecaywouldallowthepenetrationofthebodyintotheholesofthestructure.Wethereforeappliedtwofields,oneforundulationandonefordecaytotehregularpatternoftheprimarysheet.Thetertiatystructureofoursurfacewasdefinedbytheexaggerationoftheshapesalreadybeginningtoforminthebodyofthesheet.

Webeganthisprojectasawayofbringingthearchitecturalconversationtothepublic.WewantedtounderstandwhatitisthatpeopleofTorontoconsidericonicwithintheirownneighborhoods.Throughphotocompetitionsandneighborhoodbrainstormingsessions,wecollectedinputfromvariusresidents.WethentranslatedsomeoftheseimagesintoiconswhichcouldbeprintedontobagsandT-shirts.
Welivesilkscreenedtheiconsatvariousstreetfairsandneighborhoodeventsinanefforttobringtheconversationaboutwhatdefinestheidentityofaneighborhoodoutoftheschoolandintothepublicrealm.
