Photovoltaic System French Frigate Shoals, Tern Island, Hawaii Tern Island, in the French Frigate Shoals, is located 550 miles to the northwest of Oahu, Hawaii. It serves as a sanctuary for marine birds, the endangered monk seal, and the threatened green sea turtle. The island is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which assigns small groups of scientists to this remote location to study its wildlife. In 1987, a photovoltaic power system, with diesel backup, was installed on Tern Island to provide electrical power for communications, lighting, tools, dehumidifying equipment, water pumping equipment, and refrigerators. This 2.8 kW system, with 28,800 kWh of battery storage capacity, provided 95 percent of the annual power required for the island’s 9,000 kWh average daily load. In 2007, when this power system was 20 years old, the US Fish and Wildlife Service solicited a proposal from Niking Corporation to evaluate and update this aging power system. Work performed included: Evaluating the condition/efficiency of the current photovoltaic system and associated components.
Making adjustments to the system as necessary to ensure best efficiency.
Evaluating the island’s overall electrical power system for compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Making recommendations to bring the electrical power system into compliance with the NEC.
Upgrading the electrical power system as required for compliance with the NEC .
Training for the island’s inhabitants on the operation and maintenance of the upgraded power system.
