This week in as part of our writing students

listened to the text My Dinosaur is More

Awesome then created an awesome

dinosaur of their own. They have been

labelling the features of their awesome

dinosaurs and will be writing a structured

piece about why their dinosaur is the most

awesome dinosaur. It’s been great to see

how enthusiastic and colourful the students

have been making their dinosaurs!

Students in the Yellow Home Group have

produced some fabulous art pieces ready for the

Warragul Show Art Exhibition planning,

researching and creating their art works over

three sessions. Congratulations to the students

on their amazing efforts and results. Below are a

few samples of ‘Things found on the Farm’ –

this year’s theme.

All students at Nilma Primary School will have

their art on display at the Warragul Exhibition

Old Gippstown

I can’t wait for the school excursion because we’re going to old Gippstown!! Actually, I’m on the bus

going to old Gippstown right now.

You will not believe how amazing this excursion. The best part was the old teacher. In the past, if you were being naughty, the teacher would whack you with a

wooden cane. If you were leaning your elbows on the table you would also get a whack with a cane as well.

The teacher was very strict.

Then we went to the blacksmith. The blacksmith showed us cool things that he made. It was warm in the

Blacksmith shed because the coal was burning in the fire pit. The man made a S hook and gave it to use.

Then we played some olden day games. We played bowling and I got a strike.

Then we went to the general store and the lady showed us how to buy food and things that were used for

your house like an iron.

Then we had a fire truck ride. It was fun until I hit my knee and it

was the knee that I fell on and hurt.

The excursion was the best and I had a great time. By Jesse

Activating & Connecting

When you use your schema, it’s like adding new things.

You change or reinforce your thinking.

Your ideas and understanding evolves.

Before, During and After reading. I think…

I noticed… I now think…

I can connect with…

We build knowledge by sharing our background knowledge, experiences, and relating to the text. This is where you will gain new insights and consider new perspectives from listening to your peers.

Time to react and respond is important to allow for thinking.

Inferring & Visualising You will use information from the text and your background knowledge to comprehend the text.

Think about the authors purpose Why did they write this text?

Recognising authors Bias Is the author taking sides?

Making predictions Think about what might happen next?

Questioning Ask questions along the way?

Synthesising – making connections Can you relate to the characters?

Forming new understanding You may change your thinking to develop your understanding.

Create a picture in your mind ‘Visualising strengthens our inferential thinking.’

CURRICULUM CORNER

MARC LIBRARY NEWS My name is Mrs Kim James, I am the new MARC (Mobile Area Resource Centre) Teacher Librarian. I have had a great start to 2019 settling into my new role and meeting all of the students and staff at the 6 schools that I visit, thank you for all making me feel so welcome. The MARC van visits Nilma Primary School each Thursday, all students are encouraged to borrow books from the van. Foundation to Year 2 students can borrow two books and students in Years 3- 6 can borrow up to four books. Students need to return their books weekly, they can renew their books if required. During MARC lessons students are introduced to the wonderful world of Literature. At the moment students in Foun-dation to Year 2 are revising the rules and responsibilities of the library and sharing their favourite books. Students in Year 3 – 6 are revising various genres of books and beginning their 2019 Genre Challenge, this encourages students to borrow books from a range of genres.

TIMETABLE OVERVIEW Please find the timetable overview for this term. Please note at times we will have to be flexible with changes at times depending on events such as excursions and incursions. An example of this being the Circus incursion tomorrow. This will take place in the morning for all students. During class students have the freedom to access water in designated areas as well as take a brain food and movement break at 10am to allow students to refocus on learning. Students also have a second snack break after lunch to settle for the afternoon.

The excursion provided students with a unique

experience, transporting them back to the 1850’s

through to the early 1900’s to experience what it

would have been like for the early settlers.

Students participated in a range of activities during the visit to Old Gippstown, visiting the smithy at his Forge at a

Blacksmith demonstration, visiting the General Store to see the goods on sale from yesteryear, experiencing school life

in the Sunny Creek school of 1889, and playing Old Fashioned game.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION ITEMS In developing the 2019 Essential Education Items (Subject Contributions), all aspects of the Schools Resource Package from the Department of Education and Training and the needs of the school in providing the necessary extras to provide a quality educational program, has been considered. The amount for Essential Education Items for 2019 will be $175.00 per child. The amount for Essential Education Items is used to purchase all books and stationery used by each child in their classrooms for the year. It is also used to cover costs of

purchasing materials for Art, English, Music, Mathematics, Technology, Science, and Health and PE, MARC Van and Sports Levies. A letter is attached to the newsletter outlining the cost breakdown for subject contributions. Nilma Primary School would appreciate payment for all Essential Education Items and Excursion Levies by the end of first term 2019. This can be paid to the office in cash, cheque, bank deposit or Centrepay. A payment plan can be arranged for those who wish to pay in instalments. Please speak to the office for more information. This year families with students in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will also have the additional cost of a school camp. Costs and venues for the camp will be provided at a later date. Other costs involved in the school year will include school photos, excursions/incursions and fundraising ventures. If families would like to know further information in regards to Essential Education Items, Camps and Excursions and other charges, please speak to Belinda or Annette. SCHOOL MOBILE PHONE The school has obtained a mobile phone over the holiday break. This can be used as another form of communication, to notify staff of absences and to contact the school in the event of phone issues. The number is 0423 562 379 - please put this number in your phone! The school will also use the phone as another form of communication with parents and for emergency management purposes. ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES Department changes that came into effect this last year will still be implemented this year. We encourage parents to communicate absences with staff, this can be done via our new school mobile, email, note/letter, phone call or verbally. Absences not explained to staff on the day will be followed up with a message, email and/or phone call to parents where possible. If you have any questions or queries on this new process then please speak to the Office staff or the Principal. Late arrivals (after 9am) must be signed in at the Office by an adult. If your child needs to leave school early, please come to the Office first to sign them out and a staff member will collect your child from class.
