During their visit to St. Louis on September 19, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick stopped at Webster University to chat with students.

I would like to thank everyone in the St. Louis region who gave such a warm welcome to Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Their preview screening of Prohibition at the Peabody Opera House in September was just what we expected it to be—history in the making. We christened the Peabody with the largest audience ever to attend a screening with Ken Burns and then gave Prohibition its largest viewing audience in the country.

Now, with an important national initiative we once again have the opportunity to bring St. Louis together as we connect our region to the world and the world to St. Louis.

Few undertakings will ever be as critical to our region and to our entire country as American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a national, community-centered initiative to address the dropout crisis and improve high-school graduation rates across America. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting selected the Nine Network to lead American Graduate largely because of the strong community collaboration demonstrated in St. Louis during the peak of the mortgage crisis. We proved what can be done when we work together. And we can do it again.

American Graduate will launch from St. Louis on November 7 at 7:00 p.m. when more than 100 area teachers come together in the Nine Network studio for a Teacher Town Hall moderated by Gwen Ifill. We will broadcast

the event locally and it will be streamed across the country.

I hope you will have the opportunity to learn more about this unprecedented initiative— a unified force of teachers, students, parents, organizations, mentors, volunteers and major national partners working together to create a better future for our nation’s young people and for our country.

I also invite you to enjoy our stellar lineup of programs this season on Nine PBS, Nine World, Nine Create and Nine Kids. One particular highlight is the new PBS Arts Fall Festival showcasing arts events from across the country. We will complement the series with some interesting new local arts features. The Nine Network of Public Media is Leading a Bold National Initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to Address the Dropout Crisis in America

National Launch from St. LouisThe national launch of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen will occur in St. Louis on November 7 at 7:00 p.m. with the live broadcast of an American Graduate Teacher Town Hall moderated by Gwen Ifill, senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour and moderator and managing editor of Washington Week.

More than 100 area teachers will participate in the St. Louis Teacher Town Hall, the first in a series being conducted in cities across the country. The Teacher Town Halls will serve as a catalyst to generate new conversations about education today and the realities faced by America’s teachers. The St. Louis Teacher Town Hall will also be streamed nationwide, and segments will be featured on PBS NewsHour.

Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, will be in St. Louis for the launch event to emphasize the critical importance of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen and the national effort to improve graduation rates in communities across the country.

The National InitiativeThe Nine Network of Public Media is leading the national initiative, which brings together for the first time teachers, parents, students, local leaders and major national partners working with trusted public media organizations in a community-centered approach to the dropout crisis. The multifaceted, five-year initiative is focused on building the knowledge, understanding, collaboration and resources required to improve high school graduation rates.

The initiative includes public television and radio stations in 20 Hub markets across the country as well as national partnerships with America’s Promise Alliance, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the National Center for Media Engagement (NCME), which is supporting additional public media engagement activities in 36 states.

Each of the Hub stations, including the Nine Network, will focus on dropout prevention and recovery, working in partnership with schools, agencies and organizations at the community level. Much of the focus will be on creating multi-platform content, implementing education resources, and developing interactive learning tools and experiences, particularly for middle- and high-school students. Hub stations will also build collaborative networks of organizations in their communities and will create new pathways for mentors and volunteers to become involved in solutions.

• �More than 7,000 students drop out of school in America every day.

• �In Missouri, an estimated 20,000 students dropped out of the Class of 2010.

• �Nationwide only 72% of students earn their high school diplomas.

• �Among African-American and Hispanic students graduation rates are even lower.

• �In Missouri, only 56% of African-American students and 57% of Hispanic students graduate from high school.

• �While the graduation rate in the St. Louis Public School District has improved, the graduation rate for the 2010–2011 school year was 62.2%.

The staggering statistics mean that millions of young people enter adulthood without the preparation they need to become productive citizens. The future looks grim for the 1.3 million young people who drop out of high school in America each year.

These statistics also mean that our nation’s future is at stake. And the impact of the dropout crisis is being felt in communities across America. Four out of 10 dropouts receive some kind of government assistance. And dropouts are eight times more likely to become incarcerated. The annual cost to educate a student is $9,644. The annual cost to incarcerate a person is $22,600.

In Missouri alone, reducing the dropout rate by 10 percent a year would produce $191 million in crime-related savings and would provide additional state income of $103 million.

Investing in solutions to the dropout crisis would have a profound effect on our economy, on our national crime rate, and on our ability to compete in the global marketplace.

In St. Louis, the Nine Network will benefit from the strong journalistic support of the St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio to tell our community’s stories. We will also work directly with young people, helping them learn how to tell their own stories of the dropout crisis by building their digital storytelling skills through the Nine Academy.

National Public Media ProducersNational public media producers are approaching the dropout crisis from a range of perspectives to provide compelling on-air and online content. PBS NewsHour will feature segments of the American Graduate Teacher Town Halls and will emphasize school completion for students involved in the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs. StoryCorps recently launched the National Teachers Initiative to collect the stories of America’s educators and will be at the Nine Network for the St. Louis Teacher Town Hall. StoryCorps also created a new, story-based curriculum called StoryCorps U to help students develop literacy

skills. StoryCorps U is being implemented in five classes at Gateway Institute of Technology, a St. Louis public high school. Roadtrip Nation is developing tool kits, community portals, road trips and interviews in Hub markets to establish a clear connection between staying in school and reaching career goals. learn American history and civics while providing teachers with classroom activities and resources. National Public Radio has already begun to broadcast stories about the dropout crisis on Weekend Edition and All Things Considered. And Tavis Smiley recently produced Too Important To Fail, the powerful story of African-American boys facing the challenges of staying in school.

Across the nation, as we achieve new levels of understanding, share knowledge and work together on solutions, we will be creating an unprecedented opportunity to build a nation of graduates.

Preserving Nine’s PastThe Nine Network’s own tape library and our archives at the Missouri History Museum contain copies of past programs, but the collection is far from exhaustive.

That’s why a recent donation by the family of former Nine producer Jim Wilson is particularly significant. Wilson, who passed away in 2001, worked at Nine from 1977 to 1984. He collected many things, not the least of which were tapes of his own productions. This summer while cleaning out the family’s home, Wilson’s cousin discovered boxes and boxes of videotapes that Wilson saved, and brought them to the Nine Network. Among the 150 cassettes, some dating to 1979, are episodes of the minority affairs show Postscript and the journalism ethics series The Media and You. Nine only has one video machine left that can still play the tapes’ outdated 3/4-inch format.

media archives come from people just like Jim, who have a good sense of history. Because tapes like these took up so much space, stations either threw them away or taped over them. Jim’s tapes cover issues of the day and preserve a valuable piece of Nine’s history.”

In RemembranceAndy Ruhlin, who worked at Nine as executive producer during the 1980s, passed away in September at age 64. The arts have always been an important part of Nine’s programming, and no one championed music, theatre and dance more than Ruhlin. He created the multi-Emmy-Award-winning series St. Louis Skyline, a weekly arts magazine for which he personally won three Emmys, an Iris and three CEN awards. Not only did St. Louis Skyline win Ruhlin many awards, it introduced him to his wife, Anne-Marie Skinner, who hosted the program.

He also won Emmys for In Concert: Mid America Dance Company, Jazz at the Moose, A Performer’s Diary, Captain Kangaroo’s St. Louis Special and Whitaker Competition Winners.

Youth at RiskMarissa is a 17-year-old girl who has nowhere to live with her 16-month-old baby. Fortunately, she found Almost Home, a St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund agency that provides transitional housing for teenage mothers.

Marissa’s story is just one of many that are told as part of the Nine Network’s ongoing Youth at Risk: Finding Solutions Together initiative, which seeks to connect troubled young people with needed services. Before the end of the year, viewers will be able to see two full-length Living St. Louis stories and five shorter pieces about existing programs for troubled young people; factors that cause youth homelessness, addiction and abuse; and how these problems affect the greater community.

Meanwhile, the Nine Academy is working with agencies of the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, Nine’s partner in this initiative, to help them use video to tell the stories of the issues they deal with daily. Their videos will become a part of the Nine Network’s new Youth at Risk website, youthatriskstl.org, which will also feature the Living St. Louis stories, the shorter segments, connections to local resources and a list of safe places that will help young people in crisis. The Nine Network is now an official Safe Place location.

Volunteers Find FriendsMichelle Hart, Holly Ross and Kathy Stotler live nearly 40 miles from one another and may never have met if they hadn’t volunteered at the Nine Network. The three met while answering phones during pledge breaks for Celtic Thunder and have been close friends ever since. Collectively they have given their time to participate in membership drives, to work Nine’s booth at art fairs in Clayton and Belleville, and to help out at the Cat and the Hat event at the Magic House. They feel good about the work they are doing because their service impacts the lives of their neighbors, friends and family.

Stotler says, “It gives me a feeling of inner fulfillment with every event I volunteer for. I cannot always give as much financial support as I would like to, and I feel that this is a way I can contribute to something worthwhile.”

These women love being able to know how things work behind the scenes and to receive invitations to many of the Nine Network’s special events. Hart always looks forward to new opportunities that come with volunteering. Her daughter and son frequently volunteer with her and because she is able to share these experiences with her family, she says, “Nine has really enriched our lives.”

Most importantly, though, these three volunteers enjoy the benefit of creating lifelong friendships. One of the major perks of volunteering,

St. Louis RecipesCook’s Country From America’s Test Kitchen wraps up in December, but it’s going out on a high note with an episode based on St. Louis cooking styles. The press materials say that the series “uncovers blue-ribbon regional specialties.” Translated, that means that for this show, they highlight two dishes that have graced the table of nearly every St. Louisan’s home: Imo’s-style pizza and barbecued pork steaks. The St. Louis Cooking episode airs Wednesday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, December 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Every family has a perfect recipe for pork steaks. Try this one out and let us know how it stacks up to yours.

St. Louis BBQ Pork Steak Serves 6 to 8

11/2 cups ketchup2 cups light-bodied American-style beer 1/4 cup A.1. sauce1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar2 tablespoons cider vinegar2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon hot sauce1 teaspoon liquid smoke1 (5- to 6-pound) boneless pork

shoulder roast, cut into steaks Pepper

1. Make sauce: Whisk ketchup, beer, A.1., sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, garlic powder, hot sauce and liquid smoke in large bowl. Transfer to large disposable aluminum pan.

2. Heat grill: Heat all burners on high, covered, for 15 minutes. (For charcoal grill, light about 100 coals. When coals are covered with fine gray ash, spread evenly over bottom of grill. Set cooking grate in place and heat covered, with lid vent open halfway, for 5 minutes.) Scrape and oil cooking grate.

3. Sear and simmer: Season pork steaks with pepper and grill until well-browned, 5 to 7 minutes per side. Transfer steaks to pan with sauce, cover with foil, and place pan on grill. Turn all burners to low and cook, covered, until steaks are tender and sauce is slightly thickened, about 90 minutes. Check the sauce after it has been on the grill for about an hour. If it looks thick and dry, add water to adjust the consistency.

4. Final Sear: Using potholders, remove pan from grill and turn all burners to high. (For charcoal grill, light about 50 coals. When coals are covered with fine gray ash, remove grill grate and scatter evenly over spent coals.) Remove steaks from pan and grill until lightly charred around edges, 2 to 4 minutes per side. Skim fat from sauce and serve with steaks.

Nine to Grow On


Nine to Grow OnJacques Pepin’s New SeriesLegendary chef Jacques Pepin, whose career spans six decades, has, for the first time ever, collected and updated his favorite recipes for a new public television program. The 26-episode series, Essential Pepin, airs on Nine PBS Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. beginning November 5 and Mondays at 1:00 p.m. beginning November 7.

In it Pepin shares more than 125 recipes. From easy to elegant, Essential Pepin, showcases his masterful technique and his ease and flair with dishes ranging from classical Escoffier quenelles to homey braised beef in red wine, poached trout in vegetable broth and simple chicken with tarragon butter.
