Nippe@n 2007A Bid for first Worldcon in Japan

Aswestand in the year 2001, the dawn of a new century, JapaneseSF fandomis trying to reach out further across the world.

Wehavealready been interacting regularly with SF lovers overseas, and there have been many Japaneseparticipants at foreign SF con-

ventions. Many Japanese creative talents who have been influencedby Science Fiction have begunto receive acclaim overseas as well.International interest in

Japanese SF has beenincreasing year by year.

However, there are significant linguistic and geographical barrierswhich have limited the overseas popularity ofJapanese Science Fic-tion. There also hasn't been much ofan opportunity forusto activelypromote it up until this point.

We well recognize that introducing Japanese SFto the rest of theworld will be a difficult and time-consumingactivity. However, webelieve that --- in addition to its significance for Japanese fans--- itwill also provide an opportunity to express our gratitude for the manybenefits which we havereceived from overseas pelence Fiction worksand overseas Sci-Fi fans.

We want to make the World Science Fiction Convention in Japan a

milestone in the introduction ofJapanese SFto the world.

Webelieve that holding the World Science Fiction Convention in

Japan-will give SF fans ofthe world an opportunity to gain a greater

understanding of both Japanese SF and Japanese SF fans. With this

will come opportunities for new international exchange as wellas

the recognition ofnew talent, and weare sure that this will benefit usall.

Technological advances are making the world a smaller and smaller

place. Communications between SF fans, who havetold of future

worlds and of their own dreams, will without doubt generate manynew ideas and new connections between people.

Thus,it is our strong hope and intention to ensure that, should theWorldcon come to Japan,it will be something to be remembered fora long time to come.
