Introduction and Background of the Study• Kudumbashree is a holistic, participatory , women

oriented innovative overarching poverty reduction approach launched by government of Kerala in 1998.

• Much studies have been done on the impacts of Kudumbashree in reducing gender discrimination, economic progress, women empowerment and income generation.

• Little focus is given on the social impacts especially on social relationships, social networking, social participation and social development.

Objectives

To assess the contributions of Kudumbashree in enhancing the social capital and empowerment of families in Ernakulum district of Kerala state.

Materials and Methods•Research design- Descriptive•Multi-stage sampling•Sample size-90•45 members of Kudumbashree and

nonmembers from rural , costal and urban regions of Ernakulum district.

•Precision matching criteria- Income , socio-economic background.

Conclusion•Significant difference in the social capital

of Kudumbashree members and non-members has proved in this study. Kudumbashree need to be expanded as a universal intervention for enhancing social competence and social participation of people and the professional methods of social work should be incorporated in to it.

Suggestions•Kudumbashree needs to be extended as a

universal model for enhancing social competence of families.

•Social work methods needs to be incorporated in the operations of Kudumbashree.

•The focus of Kudumbashree could be changed from poverty to enhancement of social networking for sustainable family development.
