North Downs

Community Orches-

tra performs second

birthday concert

On the evening of Sunday,25th March, St John the Evan-gelist Church, Hurst Green, rang with the sound of exuber-ant music making as the NorthDowns Community Orchestraperformed their second birth-day concert. The orchestrawelcomes all players of orches-tral instruments, with no audi-tions or the need for grades, just a basic ability to play aninstrument and read a bit ofmusic. Shona Fenion, MA Cantab, theOrchestra’s Musical Director, said: “I’m always wonderfullypleased about the way the Or-chestra steps up to each andevery new challenge. This sec-ond birthday concert is a realmilestone and I was especiallylooking forward to reprising thevery first work we ever re-hearsed, The Dam BustersMarch.”The concert began with a re-sounding performance ofParry’s “Jerusalem”, a powerfulpiece at any time but espe-cially so with an orchestra ac-companying a large audiencewho had joined in singing withequal enthusiasm.

The original vision for the or-chestra was that of twofriends, David Ellis and PeterMatthews who started the or-chestra to give anyone whoplays a musical instrument achance to play in a group oflike-minded musicians, withoutthe worry of auditions or hav-ing to have obtained gradecertificates.Pam Deverill, representing theboard of trustees of NorthDowns Community Orchestraand Ensemble, said: “We arevery happy to share our music-making with the wider commu-nity and that our numbershave continued to grow. Over

the two years, our experienceand stamina has generally im-proved too, so that now wehave been able to tacklemusic we couldn’t havedreamed of playing two yearsago!“The orchestra is hoping togain a full orchestral percus-sion section with the addedhelp of some funding from theHazelwood School CommunityFund. For further informationabout the Orchestra pleasevisit their website, www.the-funorchestral.co.uk. The Or-chestra would be particularlypleased to meet potentialstring and brass players.

Maui Jim sunglasses

won't change the

world, but Rob Eatwell

from Rawlings

Opticians explains

how they changed the

way he sees it.

As I was venturing off to thesunny tropics, I knew it was im-portant to protect myself from thedangers of harmful UV light. I did-n’t want any more age relatedwrinkles or sunburnt eyelids, sosettled on a stylish pair of MauiJim sunglasses. Wrapping close tomy face, I understood why theyare approved by The Skin CancerFoundation – these gave me totalprotection from the sun’s rays.Whilst paddling in the shallow wa-

ters, I could clearly define theamazing tropical colours of thefish, as my Maui Jim’s had polar-ized glare protection and a mir-rored coating for clarity control – itwas almost like the sunglasseswere squinting for me!Relaxing back on the beach, Iknew it was important to protectmy skin too, but my greasy fin-gerprints were now on my newsunglass lenses. Thankfully, theyare super durable and have a hy-drophobic coating on them, tomake cleaning very easy. Laying back to read the next en-counter of Harry Potter, I realisedI had forgotten to bring myreading glasses – being 48 yearsof age is no fun! I thought thatI really must get my MauiJim’s with prescription lensesnext time, so I could catch up

on the adventures of the mostfamous wizard. We all know thatJ.K. Rowling has produced themost magical of tales, but not somany realise the magic of MauiJim.• Approved by the Skin Can-

Concil considers

ambitious plans for

town regeneration

On Thursday 15th March, Tan-dridge District Council’s Plan-ning Policy Committee met toconsider the Caterham Mas-terplan Supplementary Plan-ning Document (SPD). Thisdocument will establish theguidelines to help shape anddeliver an ambitious regener-ation plan for Caterham towncentre and Caterham-on-the-Hill over the next ten yearsand will build on the work pre-pared in the Caterham TownDesign Statement. The Coun-cil will also consider the resultsof the Draft Caterham Master-plan Consultation, which ranfor eight weeks and finishedon Monday 22nd January. During the consultation theproposals were viewed by2,466 people on the CaterhamMasterplan website andaround 200 people attendedone of three exhibition events. Key proposals include:• Redevelopment of the for-mer Rose & Young site.• Redevelopment of ChurchWalk Shopping Centre to pro-vide better, larger shops and acinema.• The creation of a more at-tractive, pedestrian friendly

area in Caterham Valley, to in-clude new high specificationhomes and flexible officespace.• Improvement of Town Endand revitalising vacant shops.• Regeneration of RaglanPrecinct. The comments received duringthe consultation were takeninto account and as a resultchanges have been made tothe final Caterham MasterplanSPD. Overall the plan was sup-ported, in particular the rede-velopment of Church Walk andRaglan Precinct. The changesmade include: • Responding to the concernsabout the proposal to reducethe width of the road on Sta-tion Avenue and other keyroutes. Further transport mod-elling will now be undertakenbefore any changes to theroad layout and the focus willbe on prioritising traffic calm-ing and flows alongside publicrealm improvements.• The need for improved andadditional car parking, particu-larly in the Waitrose, QuadrantHouse and Church Walk areas.• Removal of the communityuse proposal for Town End carpark.• A comprehensive deliveryschedule to show key actionsand ensure timely delivery.• Considering the pro-gramme in line with the Local

Plan Infrastructure DeliveryPlan, which will take into ac-count the impact of ongoingdevelopment within the districtand identify what infrastruc-ture is required, how much itwill cost, how it could befunded and when it could bedelivered.Development of this size andnature takes some time to bedelivered, but the CaterhamMasterplan will ensure theright things are brought for-ward for the town in an appro-priate manner. The Counciland its consultants continue towork with landowners toprogress delivery. The owners of Church Walkare aiming to submit a plan-ning application in summer2018. The owner of the for-mer Rose & Young site inCaterham and Clarion Hous-ing Group (CHG) have ex-changed contracts for thesale of the site. CHG hasplanning permission for 48dwellings, with a supermar-ket on the ground floor andthe Council said they are con-tinuing to monitor theprogress of this projectclosely. Diary of a

Plantaholicby Sue Baines

After the “Beast from the East”,spring was momentarily put onhold. There are plenty ofscorched leaves which will takea while to grow out. I had tiedup the Cordylines with raffia justto protect the crowns, and forthe first time used scaffold polefoam wrap (used on buildingsites) for the trunks. They lookto have come through un-scathed. The same can’t be said for thePenstemons, which look miser-able even though they weren’tcut back. I did take a lot of Pen-stemon cuttings, but they maytake another year to reach ma-turity. Luckily, although I had cut backthe Roses and Clematis, I had-n’t even started the Hydrangeasand the old heads gave protec-tion. I am going to make a starton thinning out the oldest stemsand any that look unproductive. The best stems will be cut backto the first two healthy budsfrom the top, or lower, wherespace is limited. They will begiven a long-life feed for erica-ceous plants, as mine are inpots of ericaceous soil. Thismeans with a bit of bluing pow-

der (easily available from anygarden centre), they have lovelyblue flowers. I don’t use rainwater, but that would be ideal. Ifthey are planted in the garden,it will depend whether soil is acidor alkaline (chalky). In chalkthey remain pink. There are somany varieties now and someare much darker than others.White Hydrangeas remainwhite. Plenty of self sown seedlingsare appearing. They are hardyannuals that tolerate the cold. Now is a great time to sowthem but the half hardies needto be cosseted until the risk offrost is over.I really miss seed sowing, but Ineed to evaluate every plantand remove the “thugs” andthose not earning their keep, which sounds so easy. I’m surethere will still be too many ... Ihope so!!

Eating OutEnjoy great Indian

and Chinese food

at The Crown and

Pepper Review by Julia Church

The Crown and Pepper cocktailbar/gastro lounge in CaterhamValley has two Indian chefs andtwo Chinese chefs servingfreshly-cooked, authentic Indianand Chinese cuisine every day. There is also a selection of“Indo-Chinese” appetisers, which my friend Anne opted foron our recent visit. Neither of ushad tried Indo-Chinese food be-fore, so we were sharing a newexperience. I ordered Kung PaoPotatoes, and Anne orderedChicken Manchurian. My KungPao Potatoes were like chunkychips with a wonderful spicyglaze and Anne’s ChickenManchurian was mouth-water-ing, bite-size pieces of chicken inbatter with a chilli, ginger andgarlic sauce. Both portions werevery generous and perfect forsharing. For our main courses, I chose avegetarian dish from the Chi-nese selection - Bean curd inGinger Garlic Sauce and Annealso chose a Chinese dish - the

Singapore rice noodles. We or-dered a Mixed Vegetable FriedRice to share. Chirag, therestaurant owner, recom-mended we also share one ofthe vegetarian Indo-Chinese ap-petisers as a side dish - theChow Chow Cauliflower with soysauce dip. The food was perfectly cookedand represented great value formoney. After our generousstarters, we could not eat all ofour main course, but the restau-rant was ready to box-up ourleft-overs for us to take home!My Bean Curd dish was verymild, complemented well by thespicier cauliflower accompani-ment, and Anne said she lovedher fine Singapore noodles whichwere very delicate. She com-mented on what a great vibe therestaurant had, saying it was the“London buzz” in Caterham. We finished our meal with an

The Kung Pao Potatoes

Espresso Martini from their se-lection of cocktails - a shot ofespresso, Absolut Vanilla vodkaand Kahula Coffee liqueur, shaken with ice and strained, which was a lovely way to end awonderful meal. We were alsogiven great service by Jasmineand Mahrez throughout. The Crown and Pepper does agreat lunch deal - two maincourses for £10.50, seven daysa week from 12 noon-3pm.
