Christ in the Corners . . .

I understand the annual lighting of the town Christmas tree has been suspended for
this year, yet another custom buried under the burden of the Covid-19 scare.
But in a way, this might be a good thing. Our experience of Christmas has developed into
a magical time, with splendid decorations, specialized theme music piped in everywhere,
and strings of colored lights blinking in intricate sequence of multi-colored luminescence.
(My own artificial tree in the rectory has eight—count ‘em: eight!—different patterns of
flashing lights, like a pine-nettle signal corps!) Maybe it’s time for a little subtlety to the
season.
Christ comes in at the edges. A humble hill-country girl is His mother, from a town
in the boondocks. And when it came time for Him to be born, He wasn’t even permitted
the tiny bit of attention that would come from His grandparents and extended family
fussing over the birth. No, not even the modest fanfare that any newborn receives from
doting relatives. His birthplace was an even more remote village in the hinterlands, while
Mary and Joseph were obliged to journey away from what little support network they
would have enjoyed in Nazareth. And beyond this, He wasn’t even born in a room in a
populated inn; He was ushered into this world in a little grotto reserved for livestock . . .
the most obscure birth imaginable, as close to invisible as could be.
He began His New life in this same way, too—that is, His Risen life. No one observed
the Resurrection in the pre-dawn of that first Easter Sunday; the witnesses could only
testify to an empty tomb. His death was in full view, on public display. But on either side
of this spectacle, His birth and His emergence into New life, these were hidden events.
They were meant to be searched out, to be specifically looked for, or else they’ll slip by
completely unnoticed.
Christ still enters into our life today in opaque ways: sensed but unseen;
inconspicuous, even invisible, yet encountered. In the end, our Lord never wanted to be a
celebrity. Even when they whisked Him off to try and make Him king, He slipped from
their midst and made good His escape. When He did address the crowds, it was always as
people: harangued and helpless, lost and without a shepherd, and as often as not He
zeroed in on one person in amidst the throng. Christ comes to us on the terms of a
relationship.
The precious infant in swaddling clothes, tucked away in a manger, revealed only to
shepherds and a few choice magi, is the perfect image of the Lord who stands at the door
of our hearts and knocks. Especially with this year’s pared-down holiday season, use the
strangeness as an opportunity to clear the field and see Him in the subtle, delicate places
where He tends to hang out. Find Him in the corners of your world, the crawl spaces of
your life.

Cristo nos cantos. . .

Cristo entra pelas beiras.
aldeia do interior.
Nazaré. E além disso, Ele nem mesmo nasceu em um quarto em uma pousada populosa;
Cristo ainda entra em nossa vida hoje de maneiras ocultas: sentido, mas não visto;
sair do meio deles.
delicados onde Ele costumava frequentar. Encontre-O nos cantos do seu mundo, nos
espaços vagos da sua vida

Christmas Card Creations:
A Tradition of St. Michael Parish Children
Grades 1—5
Children are asked to create Christmas Cards for our
Homebound Parishioners as well as for the Retired
Religious Sisters of St. Chretienne in Marlboro. Many of
these folks look forward to receiving a note of
acknowledgement of your thoughts and prayers,
especially during the Holy Season. Jesus asks us to
care for our elderly, sick and lonely and a cheery card
lifts their spirits!
If you are able, please drop off homemade cards
before the end of December to the Parish Center.
Thank you!
The giver of every good and
perfect gift has called upon us
to mimic God’s giving, by
grace, through faith, and this
is not of ourselves.”

2021 Breaking Bread Missals

When Covid19 hit parishes, the guidance from the
Archdiocese of Boston was to remove all Missals
from the pews. That guidance is still being followed
today. The parish is making available a limited num-
ber of 2021 Breaking Bread Missals for purchase.
The cost of the missal is $10. If you purchase one
you will be able to bring to Mass with you each week
and follow along with the readings. It is not re-
quired that you purchase one.
Please contact Donna McIntyre or Fr. Ren to
purchase a Missal if you would like. They will be
available on a first come first service basis.
St. Michael's Parishioners,

We're looking for volunteers who would be interest-
ed in providing a meal once a month for two of our
longtime parishioners, Bob and Joan Sacco. It could
be as simple as setting aside two servings of a meal
you were making for your own dinner. If interested,
please contactStella Daigneault (Mrs. D)
at[email protected] or 9785681755.The
meals, single servingfor two, could be dropped off
on the front steps ofBob and Joan's home at a time
and on a day convenient for you, with simple reheat-
ing instructions. Any meal would be so greatly ap-
preciated, buttheydo best with a bland, "meat and
potatoes" kind of diet, like chicken or fish and rice,
soups, nothing spicy, and limited pasta sauce dishes.
