Scriptural Reflection for the Week “Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.” (see John 4:7-10) As opposed to people’s usual associa on with the word “love” when that word is spoken or heard, we are told that God is love. Usually people consider the word “love” in it’s roman c or sensual connota ons. But here we are speaking about “love” in its essence. We are speaking about a “love” that is a complete gi of self-giving or sacrifice. Indeed, we all know too well how roman c or sensual “love” can fade so quickly. And there are many broken hearts and lives that follow as a result. But where God’s love is known and pursued and followed, hearts and lives are healed, not hurt! How can we a ain to this way of loving? According to St. John it comes with knowledge of God. When a person knows God they come to know how to truly love. But how does one come to know God? Isn’t that an easy ques on to answer? We know God because of Jesus! Jesus shows us God and He shows us love – love as it’s meant to be. Jesus’ self-giving is the model for all loving. Makes us want to think again about how we use the word “love” in our conversa ons, doesn’t it? When we understand the word correctly; when we associate it with the very essence and existence of God, it quickly becomes a sign of that which is sacred; holy; true and of everlas ng beauty! Do we “love” like that?

One Final Thought “Every human being comes from the hand of God, and we all know something of God’s love for us.”

- St. Teresa of Calcu a

Reflec on

Jesus’ commandment is that His disciples love one another, even to the point of laying down their lives, if necessary. What gifts of myself - my skills and talents, my time and resources - will best demonstrate my love for God’s people?

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parishes who seek out new opportunities to share their gifts by serving others through parish ministries such as Pre Cana, Baptismal Prep and Religious Education Catechist, Aides, Facilitators.

PRAYER CORNER

My brother, Jesus, It is hard for me to comprehend that you chose me. I know how flawed and imperfect I really am, and yet each day you choose me again as your friend.

You call me to love others in the same way you love me.

That is where the faith you have given me offers me the hope to believe that you pour out your love on me.

Bring me into your marvelous light and help me to be frui ul in this world and to care for those who are forgo en and discarded.

Help me to love as you love.

Amen.

“Trial” Encounters What is it? WYD is an encounter of young people from all around the world with the Pope amidst a festive, religious, and cultural atmosphere, which confirms the dynamism of the Church and testifies the significance of Jesus in our lives. It is an extraordinary way of evangelization to strengthen youth ministry. WYD is held every three years and the last one was held in Cracow (Poland) in 2016.

What is the Purpose? The initiator and first promoter of WYD was Saint John Paul II, who started this movement in order to enhance our personal encounter with Christ, which is life-changing. WYD also promotes peace, unity, and fraternity among people and nations, commissioning the youth as ambassadors of this message. Finally, WYD also develops methods of new evangelization for the youth.

The first two encounters, held in 1984 and 1985 respectively, were organized on the occasion of the extraordinary Jubilee for Redemption (1983-1984) and the International Year of Youth (1985); yet these were not considered official WYD encounters. However, these two events encouraged the Pope to carry out such a blessed initiative which continues today.

Why Mass Matters Reflection by Saverio Grosso

Called to Love

T oday’s Gospel is a continuation of last week, where Jesus taught that He was the vine and His disciples were the branches. The example of the vine and the branches is meant to teach us that our union with Jesus

is meant to lead us to fruitful service. Today’s reading enhances this teaching by showing us once more the kind of service that we, as His followers, are called to offer to others – love! Jesus is giving us the greatest example of the kind of love and service there is; one that He goes on to fulfill when He laid down his life for his friends, for his disciples, and for us. Just like last week’s reading, today’s Gospel is part of Jesus’ Last Supper discourse so we should keep in mind that these words are spoken before Jesus’ Crucifixion. His instruction to the disciples about love and service should be viewed in light of his death and Resurrection.

In the original Greek, there are two different words for love used in this passage – agape and philia. Used to describe love for others and for God, agape is understood as the highest and most perfect kind of love. In the second-type love mentioned, John uses philia, which is often used to describe the affection of friendship. In this context, John appears to use these words as synonyms, showing how Jesus transforms the terms of His relationship with His disciples and redefines for them their relationship with God. Why would they need this clarification? In the Hebrew Scriptures, faith in God implied that one became a servant of God but in this passage Jesus teaches that His relationship is based on friendship, not servitude. Love isn’t based solely on acts of faith or following laws, but about truly caring for others by taking time to know them and develop a relationship! And how do you grow a relationship? By spending time with each other and communicating! This is why Mass is so important; it gives us a chance to build our relationship with God. We grow through listening to Him, sharing our lives with Him and receiving Him with an open heart. But this is just the starting point! Could you really develop a close relationship or friendship with someone if you only spoke with someone once a week?

I think back to over 25 years ago when I first became friends with my wife. We spent hours on the phone (a corded one plugged into a wall!) learning more and more about each other. We spent time together talking and sharing. From that friendship, love was able to grow. Now could you imagine how different it would be if we decided to only speak once a week for a dedicated time on Sunday? If we only learned about each other’s favorite color, food and music? Obviously, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Yet so often, we approach our faith in this way. We learn a little when we are young, and then stay in touch through prayer and a weekly visit. But is this enough - can we really grow if we only stay on the surface? Each Mass we are invited to enter into the relationship more deeply, to grow in love, and to share that love with others. When Mass is over, we should want to continue this relationship by reading, praying and finding ways to stay connected to our Lord throughout the week.

Lastly, Jesus affirms that He is known by the Father and His disciples will know the Father by knowing Him, and those who know Jesus well, will love one another. Growing in our faith allows us to better share Jesus with others. Someone you meet this week may first encounter Jesus through you! Wouldn’t you love to tell them about your friend who loves you so much?

RE: St. Catherine of Sienna Tenant

FROM: Sean P. Dolan

Under a lease with the Parish of St. Catherine of Sienna in Franklin Square

(the Parish), the tenant Broken But Not Destroyed Corp. (BBND) is required

to obtain all necessary municipal zoning approvals and building permits in

order to occupy the former convent building. For months, the Parish has

repeatedly asked BBND to comply with this provision in order to safeguard

the interests of the Parish and of those who would occupy the BBND site.

Unfortunately, BBND has refused to pursue the required permits and

approvals and has instead chosen to operate its facility without them.

Therefore, the Parish finds itself with no choice but to seek to terminate its

lease with BBND. The Parish intends to take the appropriate legal ac on to

void the lease in order to ensure the safe and legal use of Parish property

and grounds.

GIVING OF SELF FOR OTHERS, PAYING IT FORWARD… LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS JESUS LOVES US!

Two women share their view of how serving God by serving others provided each greater insight, increased gratitude and how it was a blessing to be able to participate in giving back and helping others. Pictured left Joan, Sophie a resident, and Marie.

Last week at Masses we heard the words of a parishioner Joan Pellegrino sharing her unique experience of her trip to Kingston, Jamaica.

Joan, a retired nurse, spoke of her own challenges in life, her husband’s illness, and that she had often thought about making this trip in the past but it never seemed to be the right time. She decided this year was the right time with gratitude for her husband’s recovery. She stated it was time to “pay it forward” by serving others in gratitude of her blessings.

Joan seemed surprised to see such poor conditions when she arrived at the mission, sharing that the people there did not have what we here seem to take advantage of related to health care and some basics of daily living. Scarce supplies such as food, water, clothing, not to mention medicines, wheelchairs, crutches and washing clothes and bed linens by hand were the norm.

She expressed her gratitude for the experience and reminded everyone that when we are asked for support to help others we should be as generous as possible!

ADULTS CHOOSE

CATHOLIC FAITH THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN

R.C.I.A.

“The human heart plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Pentecost Sunday is May 20th when we shall celebrate the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit we received in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is a very special day, whether we are 12 or over 60 years of age, when we publicly profess our faith as witnessed by our sponsors and the faithful assembled. Our adults are in their final weeks of preparation. They continue to read and reflect on scripture, share in faith discussions, and learn more about the life of Jesus Christ. Their sponsors have joined them in these last weeks of their sessions.

Do you remember the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Our adults talked about how these gifts will help them deepen their relationship with God and influence their life moving forward. Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Piety, Fortitude, and Fear of the Lord.

MEET KELLY . . . Born in Ecuador, she was baptized and received her First Holy Communion there. When she was younger she attended Catholic School and remembers going to church with her grandmother every Sunday. Kelly moved to the United States when she was 18 and resides in New Hyde Park. She shared that there were challenges with learning a new language and adapting to a new culture; however, through God and the support of her family she now is a semester away from graduating college with a nursing degree. Kelly said that God has always been part of life, yet she had drifted away from her faith. In this last year with the encouragement of the people here at Saint Catherine of Sienna she decided to it was time for renewal, to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and deepen her relationship with God. Kelly shared “I would like to find that inner peace of mind and joy that I used to experience when I was [younger]. I would also like to become closer to God and live my life to serve and love Him.”

Keep Kelly and all our R.C.I.A. adults in your prayers.
