Friday, February 28, 2020 No School on Tuesday, March 3 There is no school for students in the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District on Tuesday, March 3, due to Primary voting occurring in many of our buildings. No School on Friday, March 6 and the week of March 9-13 There is no school for students in the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District on Friday, March 6 due to staff development and the week of March 9-13 for spring break. Classes will resume on Monday, March 16. Coronavirus update District 622 is closely monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19), in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and MDH will be developing guidance for schools in the event of an outbreak. You may visit www.isd622.org/coronavirus for updates. Upcoming Events Rock the North show choir competition tomorrow at North High The award-winning Northern Lights show choir is hosting its first-ever competition tomorrow, Saturday, February 29, at North High, 2416 11 th Avenue East. There are 22 groups from across the Midwest competing in four categories. Doors open at 6:30 AM, with the first middle school group taking the stage at 7:25 AM. John Glenn Middle School’s Starstruck performs at 8:05 AM. The Northern Lights will give an exhibition performance at the end of the preliminary competition at 5:30 PM. The top six groups will compete in the finals beginning at approximately 7:00 PM Saturday night. Tickets are available at the door for the day/preliminaries session ($10), the night/finals ($10) or an all event ticket for ($15). Food will be sold on-site from a variety of vendors. Parking is available at the school, or nearby at St. Mark’s, Target, Richardson or North Haven. A shuttle will run continuously from those parking locations to North. Free workshop offered by SPARC (Schools, Parents, & Resources Connecting) on Monday, March 2 SPARC is offering a free workshop on Monday, March 2 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the District Education Center, 2520 East 12th Avenue, North St. Paul. Participants will hear from Matthew Myers from Traverse Counseling, about Parental Leadership: Building Resilience in Children & Teens. He will speak from 6:30 - 8:00, and will then take questions from audience members from 8:00 - 8:30. These sessions are free and open to all parents, caregivers and community members. No pre-registration is necessary for the workshop. Free childcare is available, but you must pre-register by contacting Diane Peterson at [email protected] or 651-702-8409.

Disability Advocacy Day at the Capitol On Tuesday, February 25, students from Next Step and Project SEARCH participated in Disability Advocacy Day at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

John Glenn Middle students give presentation to legislators Two John Glenn Middle School students visited the Capitol this month. Toni Adelagun testified, while Siham Abdilahi, showed some deceptive vaping devices to legislators. Congratulations to these students for doing a great job!

Tartan science teacher to give keynote address for American Association of Physics Teachers

Marta Stoeckel, Tartan science teacher, will be the keynote speaker for the spring meeting of the Chicago section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. She’ll speak about her self-assessment research, with an emphasis on how it has impacted her teaching. In addition, she will lead a workshop on designing and facilitating classroom activities that promote meaningful student collaboration.

Classroom doors around Oakdale Elementary were decorated for February’s “I Love to Read” month!

Recently, North High hosted a National African-American Involvement Day family event. Many parents attended!

Weaver Elementary hosted Family STEM Night!

John Glenn Middle collaborated with Helen Keller International to provide free vision screenings and prescription eyeglasses for students.

Carver Elementary celebrated “I Love to Read” month with flip-flop reading. Teachers switched classes and did fun read-alouds. Students were delighted by the activity!

On February 27, Tartan held a Black History Showcase. The event drew a huge crowd and attendees had a great time!
