wanting to experience first-hand the lat-est trends in production technology.

Set-up times are getting shorterand shorterIn the furniture manufacturing industry, sensor technology and leading-edge robo-tic handling systems are transforming CNCmachines into highly-flexible productioncells capable of handling the most diverseof tasks. Machinery suppliers are increas-ingly focusing on networking the entireproduction chain for maximum data inte-gration and minimum machine set-uptimes.Another factor contributing to shor-ter set-up times is the development ofmore durable machine tool systems withenhanced, ultra-hard cutting materialssuch as polycrystalline diamond, mono-crystalline diamond and chemical vapor-deposited diamond. And on the materialsfront, demand in the furniture manufactur-ing industry is particularly strong for light-weight panel products.

New: wood fiber-plastic compositesOther key developments include compo-site materials and extruded profiles madeof wood fiber-plastic composites (WPC),which will be featured at LIGNA+ HAN-NOVER for the very first time this year.

The world’s forestry and wood industriesare looking to Hannover in eager anticipa-tion – and for good reason. LIGNA+ HAN-NOVER 2005 is the premiere launchpad forthe technologies of the future. Many ma-nufacturers of woodworking machinerytraditionally wait for ‘their’ trade fair be-fore unveiling their latest innovations anddevelopments. The products and solutionson show at this year’s event are character-ized by faster processes and more flexibleapplications.“In fact, ‘Flexible production’stands out as one of the key long-termtrends,”explains Dieter Siempelkamp,Pre-sident of the German Woodworking Ma-chinery Manufacturers’Association withinthe VDMA (German Engineering Federa-tion) and owner of mechanical engineer-ing firm G. Siempelkamp GmbH & Co.“Cu-stomers are demanding greater productdiversity and individuality. And today’swoodworking machinery is designed todeliver just that – cost-effectively and af-fordably. It is precisely these types of solu-tions that trade visitors will be looking forat the upcoming LIGNA+,” he added. Allthe market leaders will be exhibiting anddemonstrating their machinery andequipment at LIGNA+ HANNOVER 2005,making it a not-to be missed opportunityfor tradespeople from around the world

New solutions for small batch sizes Production specialists in the solid woodprocessing sector have focused on furt-her streamlining production processesand making them more flexible. AtLIGNA+ HANNOVER 2005, a number ofrenowned machinery manufacturers willbe unveiling new production technologyfor small batch sizes as well as solutionsfor quicker re-tooling. Increased versatilityis also an important factor in the manu-facture of reconstituted wood products, with the latest machines capable of hand-ling a greater range of product dimensionsand properties than ever before. Productparameters can be entered and alteredduring on-line operation, eliminating pro-duction stops.

Higher sawmilling yieldsIn the sawmilling industry, flexibility stillranks behind the need to increase yields. There are a number of innovative new logconversion technologies that addressthis issue, including a cutting technologythat can follow the natural curvature oflogs, which further minimizes losses.

German/RussianForum CONTACT AND INFORMATIONEXCHANGE FOR A BOOMING MARKETThere’s one country that will be in the lime-light at every international trade fair heldat the Hannover showgrounds this year –Russia. And LIGNA+ HANNOVER 2005 is noexception. The Russian market for wood-working machinery and tools continues toboom and today ranks as Germany’s thirdmost important export market.

This year, Deutsche Messe AG and theGerman Woodworking Machinery Manu-facturers’ Association within the VDMA(German Engineering Federation) areagain organizing a German/Russian Fo-rum to build on the success of the 2003event.The Forum is designed to facilitatebusiness contacts and leads and to ex-plore the practical aspects of doing busi-ness in Russia. Business people will be re-porting on their personal experiences ofthe Russian market, while consultantswill cover specific topics such as cus-toms, certification and financing.

Qualifications and training high onthe agendaLeading-edge woodworking machinery isworthless without suitably-trained oper-ators. It is therefore no surprise that thebreak-neck pace of the Russian wood in-dustry’s modernization program has alsopushed up the country’s demand for suit-ably-qualified personnel. This issue will behigh on the agenda at this year’s Ger-man/Russian Forum, where a number ofbig-name manufacturers will be profilinga range of vocational training programs.

The ProWood Foundation, which ispart of the German Engineering Federa-tion (VDMA), will be reporting on itsspectacular training project titled “SRIAZ– Southern Russian Engineering andTraining Center for the Woodworkingand Furniture Industries in Rostov-am-Don.” The project centers around a real‘Living Workshop,’ a working modelhoused on over 3,200 square feet of dis-play space in the “Teaching and Re-search” area in Hall 16 (see page 13 formore information on this project).

The German/Russian Forum will be heldfrom 10 am to about 2 pm on Wednesday,4 May 2005 at the Convention Center.

EU Business Operators’ SummitThe European Commission’s AL-INVEST program and Argentina’s EuroCentroCórdoba are jointly organizing an international business summit, to be held on 3and 4 May at the Convention Center. Invitees include firms from Argentina, Brazil,Columbia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, Belgium, Germany, England, France, theNetherlands, Italy and Spain.

The summit will be accompanied by carefully matched one-on-one meetingsdesigned to explore opportunities for cooperation between South American andEuropean businesses. It is aimed at companies interested in trading, joint ventures, and technology and know-how transfer, particularly companies that operate in thefollowing areas: import, export, forestry, sawn timber, furniture, machinery, tools, equipment and technology for the wood industry, wood materials and fascia, solidwood working as well as the cabinetmaking and joinery trades.

From fort to forum“CHARTER FOR WOOD” A CORE THEME OF THE “PROHOLZFENSTER” INITIATIVE

With a hint of playground magic, thisyear’s pavilion operated by the “Pro-Holzfenster” initiative – a German in-dustry association tasked with promo-ting innovative ideas for wooden win-dows and window frames – is themedaround a 6,400 square feet fort madeof timber palisades. As well as having awhole lot of fun, the group of appren-tice joiners helping to build the fort onsite at the fair will gain credit for a trai-ning module in stand construction.

Located in Hall 17, the “ProHolzfen-ster” pavilion will showcase the latestinnovations and refinements in wood-en windows, wood-metal windows and accessories by around 50 windowmanufacturers and subcontractors.

It will also function as a communicationplatform, featuring presentations andevents in its central “Forest Cinema.”Theprimary aim of the group display is tohelp implement the “Charter for Wood”,a federal government initiative designedto significantly increase sales of woodproducts.“The purpose of our pavilion is topromote the rapid implementation of theCharter,” explains ProHolzfenster Execu-tive Board member Nicole von Oesen.A special hearing on the implementationof the “Charter for Wood” will be held on3 May. All visitors are welcome.

Window on hi-tech innovationThe products on display at the “ProHolz-fenster” pavilion include new window

systems that combine modern visualappeal with high added value, new combi-nations of materials,burglary-resistant fea-tures, and windows that can be installed‘post-construction’in energy-saving houses. The showcase will also feature fittings andintegratable accessories, such as sensorsthat open and close windows for control-led ventilation. Visitors will also be able tolearn about the dos and don’ts of heatinsulation as well as proper maintenanceand care of wooden windows.

Center for Carpenters and Cabinetmakers

The German Association of Carpentryand Joinery (BHKH) has chosen “Centerfor Carpenters and Cabinetmakers: Infor-mation, Advice & More” as the officialmotto for its LIGNA+ HANNOVER 2005showcase.“The title reflects our mission,”explains BHKH CEO, Bettina Wehrisch.“The idea is for carpenters and cabinet-makers to be able to approach us for sup-port, technical information, advice, or dia-logue with other tradespeople.”

The Center offers a rich and varied dietof lectures, presentations, demonstrati-ons and exhibits that is designed to meetthe needs of the BHKH’s members andappeal to trade visitors. Sited on around8,600 square feet of floor space at stands

B26 and B38 at the heart of Hall 11, theCenter will deal with a different, highlytopical theme each day of the fair (seebox below for the daily program).

New: information on high-endfurnishingsThe newly formed Creatis purchasing co-operative for joiners will be making its debutappearance at the Center. The cooperative’smission is to enable joiners and cabinet-makers to purchase high-end furnishings –such as upholstered furniture, fabrics, andhome accessories – more cost-effectively.

“Form & Function” exhibitionOne of the main highlights at the Centerfor Carpenters and Cabinetmakers is the“Form & Function”exhibition, a showcasefor journeyman’s pieces judged to be out-standing in terms of their aesthetic andfunctional design (see page 14 for details).

New ideas for a classic item offurniture“Chairs are Cool” is the name of anotherexhibition featuring a good two dozenhighly creative and unconventional chairdesigns by apprentice cabinetmakers.Theonly requirement was that these wild and

wacky creations can actually function aschairs. Whether or not this ‘tightropewalk’ between function and creativityhas been a success will be up to visitors todecide as they test out the chairs or takea break from the hustle and bustle of thefair.“The humble chair, that most typicalof all forms of furniture, is synonymouswith tradition,” explains BHKH PR bossFrank Markowski. “And the fresh ideascreated by the apprentices capture theessence of innovative, modern design. Both are defining features of the carpen-try and cabinetmaking trades.”

Young people considering careers incarpentry or cabinetmaking can even takean aptitude test at the stand. It takes a-bout an hour and is graded immediatelyon completion. For more information (Ger-man-only), go to www.tischler.de

Renovation and innovationCARPENTERS BRANCH OUT INTO NEW AREAS

With its group pavilion, this year occupy-ing almost 43,000 square feet of floorspace, the Association of Lower SaxonCarpenters (VNZ) in Hall 17 is again pro-viding an ideal forum for the woodwork-ing trades, architects, construction engi-neers and property developers. Apartfrom Lower Saxon carpentry firms andbuilding subcontractors, particularlybuilding material and machinery suppli-ers, wood-industry associations and in-stitutes will also be represented at thejoint stand. “Customers demand qualityand this can only be achieved when re-searchers and developers, manufacturers,

subcontractors and the skilled trades allwork together”, underscores VNZ Man-aging Director, Wilhelm Reihl. “All thelinks in this chain are represented at ourgroup pavilion.”

Two single-family homes – one builtwith a timber frame, the other using askeleton construction technique – will bemounted at the pavilion to demonstratevarious construction methods and appli-cations for wood. Both houses offer con-crete examples of the many differentways wood can be used for everythingfrom flooring, walls and ceilings to roof-ing concepts. A model, 860-square-foot

one-person dwelling will also be on show, along with the prototype of an earth-quake-proof house.

Small church for World Youth DayVisitors to the trade fair will be able to seethe skills of the next generation of car-penters in action at the VNZ group pavil-ion where apprentices will build a smallchurch, eventually destined for theCatholic World Youth Day in Cologne (11to 21 August). Before then, the 32-ft-wideand 49-ft-long wooden church will be re-mounted at the German ProtestantChurch Congress that will be staged from25 to 29 May at the Hannover ExhibitionGrounds and in the City of Hannover.

Playhouses for kindergartensTwo years ago at LIGNA+ 2003, a group offirst-year carpentry apprentices demon-strated their skills on every day of the fairby successively building eight playhousesthat were later donated to local kinder-gartens. This year, a new group of youngapprentices will make a repeat perfor-mance. This time around, ten playhouseswill be constructed in the event area ofHall 17, right next to the pavilion run bythe Association of German Master Car-penters (BDZ) and the Association ofLower Saxon Carpenters (VNZ).

The “Aktionsforum vector” program isprimarily aimed at joiners and cabinet-makers. On every day of the show, thisspecial event, which will be making itsdebut at this year’s LIGNA+ HANNOVER,features demonstrations of leading-edge innovations from a diverse rangeof display categories. The organizers, theGerman Woodworking Machinery Man-ufacturers’ Association within theVDMA (German Engineering Federa-tion) and the ProWood Foundation, havemade a neutral presentation platformavailable for this purpose at a central lo-cation in Hall 11 (Stand D10).

Visitors to this forum will not only betreated to a concise overview of thetrade fair highlights, but will also be ableto get a first-hand impression of thepractical benefits of a number of recentinnovations in real-life applications. Each 15-minute demonstration will be

All professions are faced with constantchange. What are the future challengesfor carpenters? They will have to become full-serviceproviders, meaning they will have to in-creasingly collaborate with other trades. When it comes to renovating old build-ings,for instance, customers generally onlywant to deal with one contact person. They want to be able to rely on that per-son to deliver good quality results – andpeople generally do have faith in carpen-ters in this regard. In recent years, it has be-come apparent that full-service firms aresecuring a firmer hold on the market.

What other services does a carpentry firmhave to provide, apart from its specialisttrade skills, in order to survive?Firms have to be proactive, rather than re-active and seek out their own markets.

Heinrich Cordes, headof the Association ofGerman Master Car-penters (BDZ) and theAssociation of LowerSaxon Carpenters (VDZ)on the key changes

that are affecting the carpentry tradeand its future business prospects.

How do you view the current situation inyour sector?Carpenters are not affected by the build-ing downturn to the same extent asother trades, since wood is in high de-mand – for new buildings as well as ren-ovations, for rooftop additions and in-stallation of solar panels through to en-ergy-saving facades. The remodeling andrenovations market is also on the up, so Iam quite optimistic about the future.

7

This means, for instance, targeting home-owners, making them an offer for a com-plete facelift of their home or calculatingtheir energy usage before and after reno-vation work. I also know of 16 firms whichrecently joined forces to build earth-quake-proof houses for Iran.

What are the main issues of the future? One key area is the energy sector, especiallyas regards the construction of solar powerplants. Surface coatings using nanotech-nology also have a great future. They canmake wood waterproof without affectingits air permeability or natural color. Thistechnology will open up unprecedented op-portunities,the full extent of which will onlybecome fully apparent in the coming years.LIGNA+ HANNOVER certainly is a must foranyone in our industry who wants to stayabreast of these developments.

followed by questions & answers. AndreasKuhnt will be moderating the entire pro-gram and the demonstrations on stagewill also be projected onto a giant screen toallow as many interested spectators aspossible to follow the live action.

The programKey representatives from different displaycategories are involved in the “vector” ini-tiative. Electrical tools are the mainstay ofany joiner/cabinetmaker or carpenter, andleading manufacturers Festool GmbH andMafell AG will be unveiling some excitingnew products for this target market.

Fastening systems are also part andparcel of the daily work of the skilledtrades. Hoffmann Maschinenbau GmbHwill be giving an update on the latestdovetail joint systems, while new designpossibilities using reconstituted woodproducts will be unveiled by one of

the market leaders, Fritz Egger GmbH & Co.

OS Datensysteme GmbH (OSD) andCAD-Systeme Spanke (Germany) will bepartnering with Ithema to update theskilled trades on the latest software ap-plications. And for the first time, manu-facturers of stationary machinery willalso be represented at “vector”. TheWeinig Group and Homag AG subsidiary,Bütfering Schleiftechnik GmbH will bepresenting the latest innovative featuresof their high-precision machines.

Another highlight at “vector” is themachine tools presentation where LeitzGmbH & Co. KG will be unveiling its lat-est innovations, however, the details arestill under wraps.

Other contributions are also planned. The complete program will be availableat www.handwerk-holz-mehr.de as fromApril 2005.

Experts will giveshort lectures and practical demonstra-tions of machinery and equipment to il-lustrate ways of optimizing the relevantprocesses. They will also pinpoint what isrequired of forestry owners, forestry com-panies and the timber industry.

Locating skid sites in unfamiliarforests, often with poor vehicle access, costs haulage companies time andmoney. However, specially-designed GPSsystems can rectify this problem. In Ger-many, the necessary data is currently be-ing compiled under the auspices of theGeodat project – a joint initiative of Ger-man forestry and timber industrieswhich aims to produce accurate digitalmaps of all the Federal Republic’s foresttracks and haulage routes. A number ofcompanies are poised to provide naviga-tion systems for German forests as soonas the data becomes available. ReinerHofmann (KWF) anticipates that the in-troduction of such systems will generate“annual savings in the order of severalmillion euros in timber haulage alone.”

As part of the KWF presentation,“Costoptimization via GPS forest navigation,”some of the systems currently operating inNorth Rhine-Westphalia – where the basedata is already available – will be demon-strated to trade fair visitors. This will becomplemented by information on thestate of play in other German states. An ap-propriately-equipped harvester, skidderand logging truck (see page 10) will be ondisplay at the pavilion.
