God’s statement in Genesis 6:7-8 was most likely a sorrowful acknowledgment that to make things better, most of the earth’s population would have to die. The people that God had created had so turned against him that he had to start over with the few who remained faithful.

Fortunately, one righteous man still loved God. The word translated “righteous” in verse 9 indicates that Noah sought both to worship and obey God. Also, the statement that he was blameless indicates a moral purity.

The ark Noah built was longer than a football field, almost as wide as a basketball court is long, and as tall as a five-story building. Modern shipbuilding experts have confirmed that the dimensions given in the Bible would be ideal to ensure that a large wooden vessel would remain intact and upright while adrift in heavy seas.

• Say: Today we’re going to learn that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong.

• Hand out the world name tags children made in Lesson 1, and help them attach the name tags to their clothing. If some of the name tags were damaged or if some of the children weren’t in class that week, have them make new name tags using the photocopiable handout.

• Direct the children to the Let’s Get Started activities you’ve set up.

Let’s Get StartedSet up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After

you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity.Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and direct children’s

conversation toward today’s lesson. Ask questions such as “What are some ways you obey God every day?” and “Why is it important for us to obey?”

n Option 1: Glad/Sad SmilesSUPPLIES: red and white construction paper, glue sticks, scissors, markers

Before class, cut out large smiles from red construction paper. Make each smile at least 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. Prepare a paper smile for each child in class. You’ll also need to cut four 1-inch squares of white construction paper for each child. Save cutting time by layering three sheets of paper and cutting them all at once.

Set out the white paper squares, markers, and glue sticks. As children arrive, distribute the paper smiles and invite children to make Glad/Sad Smiles by gluing white paper “teeth” between the lips. Let children use markers to write their names on the backs of their paper smiles. Have children hold the smiles up to their faces and then turn the smiles upside down to create sad frowns. Lead the children in a march around the room with their smiles, and encourage them to wave at each other. Ask questions such as “What makes you happy? What makes you sad?” and “What do you think makes God happy?” “What do you think makes God sad?” Explain that God feels joy and sadness just like we do. Tell children that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. Mention that they’ll hear a Bible story about a time when God was very sad.

It’s important to say the Bible Point just as it’s written in each activity. Repeating the Bible Point over and over throughout the lesson will help kids remember it and apply it to their lives.

You’ll be using the Glad/Sad Smiles later in the lesson. If some children choose not to make a smile, have willing helpers make extras.

n Option 2: March to the ArkSUPPLIES: grocery sacks, scissors, tape, stuffed animals

Before this activity, cut the bottoms from 10 paper grocery sacks. Cut open the side of each sack so it becomes one long strip.

Set a table in one corner of the room and place stuffed animals nearby. Set out the paper sacks and tape. Invite children to create an ark by taping the paper sacks to the sides of the table between the table legs. Remind children to leave an opening so the animals can board the ark.

As children work, ask questions such as “How did the directions I gave help you build your ark?” and “Why is it important to follow directions?” Explain that today’s Bible story is about a time when Noah followed God’s directions. Noah obeyed God because he knew that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong.

When the ark is finished, encourage children to choose stuffed animals and march the animals into the ark. Then go for a pretend sail!

n Option 3: Invisible PetsSUPPLIES: poster board, picture-hanging wire, wire-cutting scissors, masking tape, markers

Before class, cut a 20-inch length of medium-gauge picture-hanging wire for each child. Straightened coat hanger wire will also work. You’ll also need to cut a 2x6-inch strip of poster board for each child.

Explain that children will make leashes for invisible pets. Set out masking tape, markers, and the poster-board strips. Have children use the markers to decorate the poster-board strips and then bend the wire to form a collar at one end and tape the poster-board strip around the collar. Have them wrap the other end with masking tape to create a handle. Let children take their invisible pets for a walk by holding the handles of the leashes. Encourage children to name their pets and tell what they look like.

Make comments such as “Your pets like to follow and obey you” and “Obeying keeps us safe.” Point out that it’s important for people to obey God and that God keeps them safe. Tell children that today’s Bible story is about a time when people didn’t obey God. Explain that the people forgot that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. Have the children walk their “pets” to one side of the room and tell the pets to “stay.”

When everyone has arrived and you’re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they’re doing and get ready to clean up.

n Pick Up Our ToysSUPPLIES: CD player

Lead children in singing “Pick Up Our Toys” (track 2) with the CD to the tune of “Skip to My Lou.” Encourage the children to sing along as they help clean up the room.

If you want to include the names of all the children in your class, sing the song without the CD and repeat the naming section. If you choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week.

Tell the children you’ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap, children are to stop what they’re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Practice this signal a few times. Encourage children to respond quickly so you’ll have time for all the fun activities you’ve planned.

Before class, use markers and construction paper to make the following traffic signs: Stop, Go, Left Turn arrow, Right Turn arrow.

Choose two children to be the Traffic Directors, and hand them each two paper traffic signs. Instruct the Traffic Directors to stand in the center of the room. Hand the rest of the children each a paper plate “steering wheel,” and let them scatter around the room.

Say: Let’s play a fun game called Traffic Tangle. We’ll pretend you’re driving cars. The Traffic Directors will direct traffic by holding up signs. Watch carefully and obey the signs, or you might get into a real traffic jam!

Begin the game and let the children follow the traffic signs. When a traffic jam is created, tell children to put on their brakes. Then have the children “drive” over to you and sit down. Say: That was quite a traffic jam!

Ask: • Why did our cars get tangled up? (Some people didn’t follow the signs; I didn’t know which way to go; I got confused.)

• Why is it important for us to obey traffic rules? (So we won’t have an accident; to keep us safe; so no one gets hurt.)

• Besides traffic police, who else do we obey? (Parents; teachers; God.)• Why is it important for us to obey God? (Because he knows what’s best for us;

because he wants to keep us safe; because he loves us.)Say: Just as traffic rules keep us safe, God’s rules keep us safe, too.

Say: Those are good answers! We show God how much we love him when we obey his rules. God is happy when we obey him, and it’s important to remember that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. When we don’t obey God’s rules, we make God sad and may wind up in a real mess like our traffic tangle. Our Bible story today is about a man named Noah who always did what was right and obeyed God even though everyone else on earth ignored God and did bad things.

n Bible Song and Prayer TimeSUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, CD player, basket or box

Before class, make surprise cards for this activity by cutting construction paper into 2x6-inch slips. Prepare a surprise card for each child plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and then stamp the ark stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Bookmark Genesis 6:5-17 in the Bible you’ll be using.

Have the children sit in a circle. Say: Now it’s time to choose a Bible person to bring me the Bible marked with today’s Bible story. As we sing our Bible song, I’ll pass out the

surprise cards. Don’t look inside your card until the song is over.Lead children in singing “Read God’s Book” (track 3) with the CD, to the tune of

“The Muffin Man.” As you sing, pass out the folded surprise cards.

Now it’s time to read God’s Book,Read God’s Book, read God’s Book.Now it’s time to read God’s Book.Let’s hear a Bible story.(Repeat 3x.)

After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who has the ark stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today.

Identify the Bible person, and have the rest of the children clap for him or her. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place and show the children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down.

Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week we’ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we’re all learning that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong.

Let’s say a special prayer now and ask God to help us obey him. I’ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, “God, please help me obey you.”

Pass around the basket or box. When you’ve collected everyone’s surprise card, set the basket aside and pick up the Bible. Lead children in this prayer: God, thank you for the Bible and all the stories in it. Teach us today that you are in charge and are sad when we do wrong. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If the ink pad is dry, moisten it with three to five drops of water.

n Hear and Tell the Bible StorySUPPLIES: Bible, Glad/Sad Smiles from Option 1, CD player

Bring out the Bible, the CD player and CD, and the Bible Big Book: Noah. Set the Glad/Sad Smiles from Option 1 beside you.

Hold up the Bible. Say: Our Bible story comes from the book of Genesis in the Bible. Hold up the Bible Big Book: Noah. Our Bible Big Book shows us pictures of the Bible story. Our story today is about a time when God was sad (hold an upside-down paper smile to your mouth), and when God was happy. Turn the smile right-side up. You can help tell the Bible

story. Hand out the Glad/Sad Smiles. Every time you hear the name Noah, hold up a happy smile. But when you hear the word people, put on a sad frown. Let children practice making smiles and frowns with their paper smiles.

Open the Bible Big Book to page 1, and show children the picture. Turn on the CD and listen to the “Noah, Part 1” segment (track 9), turning the page at the chime. Turn off the CD player after page 3.

Return the Bible Big Book to the Learning Lab, and have children put down their Glad/Sad Smiles.

Ask: • How did God feel when the people did bad things and disobeyed God’s rules? (Sad; mad.)

Say: God was sad when the people acted ugly and mean to each other. That’s not how God wanted them to act.

Ask: • Why did God decide to send a flood? (Because people were bad; to wash away all the bad things and start over.)

Say: Noah was the only man on earth who obeyed God. Noah loved God, and God loved Noah. So God gave Noah a way to escape the flood.

Ask: • How did God plan to save Noah, his family, and the animals? (By having Noah build a big boat; by keeping them from drowning.)

• What might have happened if Noah hadn’t obeyed God and built the ark? (Noah might have died in the flood; his family might not have lived; no animals would have been saved.)

Say: Listen to what the Bible says in the book of Proverbs: “Keep the commandments and keep your life” (Proverbs 19:16a). Remember, a commandment is an important rule God wants us to follow. Then ask:

• How does obeying God’s commandments protect us? (It keeps us out of trouble; God protects people who obey.)

• What are some ways we can obey God? (Being kind to each other; praying; being thankful.)

Say: It’s important to remember that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. God sent us his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross so our sins—all the wrong things we do—can be forgiven. It makes me sad when I think of Jesus dying. But it makes me happy to remember that he came back to life. When we believe in Jesus, God forgives our sins. That way, we can live forever in heaven. And do you know what else? When

we believe in Jesus, he’ll be our best friend here on earth!

And when we obey God, it makes God very…(hold up a paper smile and encourage children to do the same) happy! Now let’s have some fun following directions.

n Do the Bible StorySUPPLIES: building blocks, masking tape, CD player

Before class, use masking tape to create a large outline of a boat on your floor in the center of the room.

Place a pile of building blocks at one end of the room. Be sure there’s at least one block for each child. Have children form two lines at the opposite end of the room from the blocks.

Stand in the center of the boat shape, and hold up the inflatable hammer. Say: Let’s pretend we’re building an ark like Noah built. We’re going to use this special hammer and these blocks to build a boat shape. But first, I must

give you important directions, so listen carefully! When I flip the lights off and on, the first person in each line can hop to the pile of blocks. Balance a block on your head, and then walk here to the center of the boat shape, where I’m standing. Lay down your block here in the center, pick up this inflatable hammer, and tap it on the floor like this (tap the inflatable hammer on the floor a few times). Set the hammer back down (lay the inflatable hammer down on its side), and hop back and tap the next person in line. That person will also take a block to the center and then tap the hammer a few times. We’ll keep building the ark until all the blocks are used and everyone gets a turn to use the hammer.

Lay the inflatable hammer down in the center of the boat shape and begin the game. Play for about five minutes. When the game is over, return the inflatable hammer to the Learning Lab and gather children around the boat. Say: You did a great job! Building an ark is hard work, and obeying directions can be hard sometimes, too.

Ask: • What was hard about building the boat? (Keeping the block on my head; taking turns using the hammer; I couldn’t remember all the directions.)

• Were you ever given a hard job to do? Tell us about that time. (Once I helped my dad in the garden; last week my mom let me set the table when Grandma came over for dinner.)

Say: God gave Noah a hard job to do, but Noah loved God, and he obeyed God. Noah knew that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. We want to obey God in everything we do! Let’s sing a song about obeying God.

Lead children in singing “Obey God” (track 10) to the tune of “Ten Little Indians.” Sing the song with the CD.

Say: We like to make God happy, and obeying God makes him smile, I’m sure! Let’s see if Pockets knows that obeying God makes everyone smile.

Closingn Pockets’ PoutSUPPLIES: none

Bring out Pockets the Kangaroo, and go through the following puppet script. When you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight.

(Pockets comes out grumbling and mumbling.)

Teacher: Hi, Pockets! (Looks closer at Pockets.) You don’t seem very smiley today. What’s wrong?

Pockets: I’m in big trouble with Mom. But it’s not fair! I just walked over to my friend’s house, and Mom got really upset with me.

Teacher: Did you have permission to go?

Pockets: (Hesitates.) Well…she said “no” when I asked. But I know the way and can cross streets by myself! I’m getting to be a big kangaroo!

Teacher: Did you have to cross any busy streets?

Pockets: Only two. And I really wanted to go!

Teacher: Pockets, that was a dangerous thing to do! Why do you think your mom said “no”?

Pockets: ’Cause she didn’t want me to go.

Teacher: And why didn’t she want you to go?

Pockets: ’Cause I might get hurt?

Teacher: Right! You know, that reminds me of our Bible story today. Children, can you tell Pockets about Noah and how he always obeyed God? Take the mini beach ball from the Learning Lab, and have children form a circle.

Ask: • Who’s in charge and is sad when we disobey? (God.)

Say: That’s right! God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. Let’s play an exciting hopping-bopping game and tell ways we can obey God this week. We’ll bop the mini beach ball around the circle. If the ball hits the ground,

the last person who bopped it will tell a way to obey God this week, such as obeying your parents, being kind to others, or helping someone.

After everyone has had a turn to tell one way to obey God, return the mini beach ball to the Learning Lab and say: Now we’ll learn a new song to help us remember that God’s in charge. Lead children in singing “God’s in Charge” (track 11) with the CD to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

Let’s all obey God (shake hands with the person to your right);He is good and true.God’s in charge of all we do (point upward)And cares for me and you! (Point to yourself and then to a friend.)

n Lively Learning: Traffic BallUse the traffic signs from the “Setting the Stage” activity and the mini beach ball from the

Learning Lab. Have children form two lines facing each other. Choose one child to be the Director, and have him or her stand at one end of the lines holding the traffic signs. Explain that you’ll toss the mini beach ball back and forth between the lines, but you must watch the Director and obey the signs. If the Director holds up the “Stop” sign, stop tossing the ball.

If the Director holds up “Go,” resume tossing the ball. If the Director holds up either arrow, change tossing directions. After a few minutes of play, choose a new Director. Remind children that the Director is in charge of the game, but that in real life, God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong.

n Make to Take: Bark BoatsBefore this activity, gather pieces of tree bark or bark chips used for landscaping.Set out paper, glue, and markers. Invite children to use the markers to create a picture of an ark or boat.

Then let them break off pieces of bark and glue them to the boat. Mention that Noah used wood and bark to build the ark. Remind them that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong, but that God was happy with Noah for obeying him. Help children name their boats, and write “S.S. (name of boat)” on their pictures.

n Treat to Eat: BananimalsHave children clean their hands with wet wipes or at a

nearby sink. Set out banana pieces, grapes, large and small marshmallows, and pretzel sticks. Hand napkins to children and invite them to create edible animals using pretzels, marshmallows, and fruit pieces. Simple animals might include a horse, giraffe, bear, or bunny. Let children tell about their animals before gobbling them up. Remind children that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong, but Noah pleased God because he obeyed.

n Story Picture: Noah Builds the ArkHand each child a photocopy of the “Today I Learned…” handout. Set out crayons, glue sticks, and small

strips of sandpaper or landscaping bark chips. Let children color their pictures and then glue the sandpaper or bark chips on the ark.

Family Funl Invite your child to cut an ark shape from a heavy paper

grocery sack. Decorate the ark with photographs or drawings of family members and pets peeking over the deck or out a window. Display the ark in a prominent place to remind you that God is in charge of your lives, just as he was in charge of Noah and the ark.

Today your child learned that God is in charge and is sad when we do wrong. Children learned that God protects us when we obey him. They talked about different ways to obey God this week.
