Nollaig Shona Duit!

.Christmas at Crescent!

The traditional large Christmas tree was

erected in the Central Area as of last Mon-

day! It has since been adorned with lus-

trous red and silver baubles and various

yuletide decorations. A manger has been

set up beside it, depicting the crib where

Jesus was born. Saint Francis of Assisi is

credited with creating the first nativity

scene in 1223 intending to encourage the

worship of Christ, having been inspired by

his recent visit to the Holy Land where he

had been shown Jesus' traditional birth-

place.

A nativity scene takes its inspiration from

the birth of Jesus in the Gospels of Mat-

thew and Luke. Luke's narrative describes

an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to

shepherds who then visit the humble site

where Jesus is found lying in a manger, a

trough for cattle feed. Matthew's narrative

tells of "wise men" who follow a star to the

house where Jesus dwelt.

To all staff, students

and teachers have a

Happy Christmas!

The fir tree has a long association

with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boni-

face, who converted the German peo-ple to Christianity, was said to have

come across a group of pagans wor-

shipping an oak tree. In anger, St

Boniface is said to have cut down the

oak tree and to his amazement a

young fir tree sprung up from the

roots of the oak tree. St Boniface

took this as a sign of the Christian

faith. But it was not until the 16th

century that fir trees were brought

indoors at Christmas time.

In other Christmassy news, the Carol Con-

cert took place on Wednesday Night, organ-

ised and run by Mrs Lavery. A fun night was

had by all full of festive cheer and music.

Mrs Delaney presented the night and was

opened by a haunting rendition of Away in a

Manger. This was followed by ‘What Child is

This’, more commonly known from the air of

Greensleeves sung by the Choir accompanied by the Trad Group.

The equally beautiful O Holy Night with lead soloists Mykeala and Cliodhna backed by a four-

part harmony choir next echoed through the CentraL Area. As the night progressed, people

gradually got into the Xmas cheer with olden carols and popular music alike. Carols such

as Joy to the World were sung as well as a carol medley of Once in Royal, O Come All Ye

Faithful and Silent Night played by the orchestra. The fifth year

music class sang an interesting negro spiritual called Mary Had a

Baby and the staff choir sung Mary’s Child.

The Parents’ Choir got into the spirit! They serenaded us with a

mash-up of Oh Christmas Tree and We Wish You a Merry Xmas.

The Carol evening came to a close with the last few melodies; A

sweet duet between David and Mykeala called Winter Song origi-

nally by Sara Bareilles and the orchestra played us out with

Sleigh Ride and Slade’s 73 hit ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’.

Enable Ireland Santa Hat Day

On December 8, the TY students were selling Santa Hats on

the behalf of Bóthar prior to the Heineken Cup game between

Munster and Saracens. It was arranged that the TY students

would meet outside a house opposite Thomond Park at half

two and didn't finish selling until kick-off at six o’clock. The

students were deployed around the Thomond Park area in

groups. Thousands of hats were sold on the day and Bóthar

made a lot of money to help people in the third world. When

we finished there were sweets and drinks for us take-away.

The Dublin-Bóthar office are attempting to break the record

this Sunday in the Aviva Stadium at the Leinster v Clermont

game. We sold over 12,734 hats on the day comfortably

breaking the current record of 8,600. Leinster are likely to

break the record again as there attendance will be 55,000,

twice the capacity of Thomond Park.

On Friday December 7th, Santa Hat day was held

in school in aid of Enable Ireland. The event

raised over €1000 and was a huge success.

Some of the students even dressed up for the

event and so did a few of the teachers. There

was a very good atmosphere in the central area

on the day and the cheque was presented to

Claire, Enda and Adam at assembly the following

Wednesday. This fundraising is essential to Ena-

ble Ireland to continue their brilliant charitable

work. This is set to become an annual event in

the school.

School Show High School Musical!

The School Show was yet

again another great success.

High School Musical was the

musical performed this year.

The show was, as always, at a

very high standard and was

greeted by a standing ovation

on the final night. The cast

had rehearsed for months in

preparation for the show,

rehearsing all through Mid-

Term and at night time for the

two weeks before the show.

The lead roles were played by

Luke Ryan, Jesse Reed,

Michaela Tomlinson, David

O'Leary, Chris Young, Alison

McCarthy and Maria Fleming.

The stage was erected in one

day, for the first time, by TY

students two weeks before

the show with the crew being

in the school till eleven. From

then the cast practiced on the

stage at night with the art

team working on the stage

during the day. The show was

very entertaining and went on

for three nights with Friday

and Saturday being a sell out.

the show was also performed

on the Wednesday for primary

school children.

Silver Surfers

Our class Meyer have been working on an IT programme which we call Silver Surfers. This involves working with People

with Parkinsons and their carers on the following computer skills. We have been working with our new friends for the last

number of weeks and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with them. We have also learned a lot from this experience

especially the positive outlook on life the participants have.

Cyber Bullying

Page 5

“About 75% of people

have visited a site online

and made fun of another

person. Cyber bullying is

when a child, teen, or

adult is bullied online.”

Dosomething.org. Cyber

bullying should not be

ignored. There should be a

federal law against bulling

online. Cyber bullying

causes depression and in

some cases even suicide.

When someone is being

bullied their self-esteem

decreases rapidly. Cyber-

bullying.us said “They feel

embarrassed, depressed,

and unwanted.”

Stopcyberbullying.org

said “This never goes

away and if it does it

takes years and some-

times counselling is need-

ed.” It takes time for

someone to get over the

mixed emotions that are

running though their head.

Sometimes victims of

cyber bulling attempt or

commit suicide. Such as

the recent deaths of Irish

teenagers, 15 year old

Ciara Pugsley, from Lei-

trim and 13 year old Erin

Gallagher, from Donegal.

uver in Canada lost her life

after what is again suspected

to have been a campaign of

online abuse against her. The

victims cannot control all the

emotions and pressure that

is being brought on them.

Some might say that cyber

bullying is not as bad as it

seems, but they are wrong.

Cyber bullying is something

that most pre-teens and

teens go through. Bullies do

not realize that it hurts oth-

ers. Also, some say that kids

do not take these things seri-

ously. Cyber bullying should

be taken seriously and needs

On Tuesday 21st of November 3rd Year class Berchmans went on a visit to

Leinster House, they got to see the Dail in motion, visit the Seanad and were

taken on a tour of the house by Matt. They got to see the Dail chamber and sit

in on a questions and answers session between Minister Brendan Howlin and

Mary Lou Mc Donald T.D. They were shown the collection of paintings of all the

former Taoiseach in Leinster House,,such famous names as Jack Lynch,

Sean Lemass, Garret Fitzgerald, Charlie Haughy.

Outside the gates they got to meet with protesters and experience first

hand the atmosphere of unrest that exists in the country, with the various

protests taking place. Even T.D. Willie O

Dea was available for a picture!

They would like to thank their teachers

Emilie and Joe for taking us and espe-

cially Mary Kenny Mr. Michael Noonan’s

personal secretary for all her help in

organising the trip.

This year, like last year, Kensy S.J. is our debating co-ordinator.

He’s aptly named our group, the DEBSOC (debating society). We

kick-started the year with a concern debate against Glenstal which

we won 3 points from. The motion was ‘The World has more to fear

from Obama as president than Romney’. Concern debates give

students the opportunity to research and debate issues that affect

those living in the developing world and deal with key issues in

current affairs. Our next debates are in January, for Round 3 and

4 which are based on AIDS and the UN. I myself, will be opposing

the motion ‘The UN belongs on the scrapheap of History’. Wednes-

day in Room 30 and new members are welcome!

Chairpersons, Adjudicators, Members of

the Opposition, Ladies and Gentleman!

The debate on AIDS states that an AIDS free world will be achieved within our lifetime. There will then be a de-

bate on Population and our scores will be tallied to decide if we’ve made it through to the Knockout stages! The

debating team meets regularly, everyone is welcome!

TY Options

I am going to write to you today to talk about my experience with the option

I tried for the first time in depth which is Home economics. Although I did

encounter other aspects of this option than cooking this was by far my

favourite option of TY. Along with many other people I learned new recipes

for dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed Home EC during my course of TY. Last

Wednesday I took part in a cooking test. One other person and I made a

Mexican dish from scratch. The dish consisted of a starter of nachos with

guacamole and cheese. The main course consisted of a rice dish with

chicken, peppers and tomatoes. We also made a poster representing Mexi-

can food and culture. Before I would never have thought I would be able

make something like this. I have had so much fun during this course and

would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested but is hesitating.

After winning the City Cup, the Junior Cup rugby team have been in good form. They have marched to

victory against Blackrock, PBC, Clements and most recently, Clongowes Wood, but were beaten by Rock-

well, on an off day for the team. The team also had expert advice from Paul O’Connell, who helped them

with line-outs at one training session. The Kidney Cup will begin for Crescent in January and have a bye

into the semi-finals where they await

the winners of Castletroy and CBC.

Crescent have had a good record in

the competition in recent years get-

ting to the last three finals, winning

two. The Junior Cup campaign will

begin in late January .with a qualify-

ing game.

Blackrock Match Report

Last Saturday, Crescent's Junior Cup

Rugby team played Blackrock College

from Dublin in a challenge match. On

paper it looked like it would be a tight

match and it certainly was. With

Blackrock supposedly being the best

team in Leinster this year and with

Crescent's success so far this year,

this was all set to be an entertaining

match and it didn't disap-

point. Crescent started the game

strongly and continued to put

Blackrock under pressure. Mid-way

into the first half, the first score of the

game was a Crescent try. Some great

carrying from Peter Hickey off our

own lineout set up Glen Dickenson to

round the Blackrock defence and run in

for a try. Blackrock came back strong-

ly and really tested the Crescent de-

fence late in the first half but some

fierce tackling from the home team

eventually lead to Blackrock making a

costly mistake as the half-time whistle

blew with the score 5-0 to Crescent.

Blackrock came out all guns blazing in

the second half and were by far the

more dominant team in the opening

exchanges. This lead to Blackrock

crossing the line for their opening

score after a well organised maul off a

lineout was too much for Crescent to

handle. The conversion was missed,

leaving the score at 5-5. Blackrock had

the majority of the possession in the

second half but Crescent's defence

was too strong for the away side to

break down. The game looked set to be

a draw but in the last play of the game,
