By Aaron Fischer

I am writing this article on a beautiful summer day. The school is very quiet this time of the year, which is nice for a

few days, but it is time to get the students back into the building. The school is much more alive when our students and staff arrive in September. I can’t wait to get the new school year started! Here are a few updates for you.

Bus GarageThe School Board has decided to replace our

existing bus garage that is in poor shape. The buses are too long to fit into one of the garages and the buses are rusting from sitting on gravel.

In addition, the parking lot is in need of a

serious upgrade and we could use additional parking spaces for all of our events at the Esko Sports Complex.

The new bus garage will be built on District land that adjoins the Esko Business Park. This will be an ideal location for the new garage. The new garage will have 16 unheated stalls for the buses and vans. There will also be two heated stalls for maintenance and cleaning.

The new building will have an office attached. This willbe a significant upgrade over the cur-rent District facility.

The School Board has been saving some mon-ey the past few years to get this project done. This is something that has been considered for many years and this year it looks like it is going to happen.

The Esko Transportation Department, under

the supervision of Laurie Groth, is one of the more efficient and economical transportation departments in the State of Minnesota. This plan is a great economical and practical solution going into the future.

Parking LotsThe Esko School Board has received count-

less complaints regarding our parking lot at the Sports Complex. Each year we have a number of cars, trucks, buses and garbage trucks that get stuck there.

The issue is related to the soil composition and how the soil handles the frost. Basically, the soil holds the frost and as it melts we get large frost bubbles. The bubbles may not even be no-ticeable when you look at it, but if you step on it, the entire area will collapse.

Story Continued on page 4

On September 1, 2019, the District will implement a convenience fee of 3% per credit card trans-action. Families are able to pay fees with cash or check without having to pay the convenience fee

Superintendent’s Update ContinuedThis has led to buses and garbage trucks

sinking up to their frame in the parking lot. The garbage truck took over 6 hours to pull out last spring.

Last spring was especially bad in the parking lot and the School Board has decided to address this issue too. When our dedicated parking lot attendant, Len Robinson, sunk over his knees in the lot as he worked a sporting event, we decided that was the last straw.

To address the parking lot issue, the School Board has hired a consulting firm (ICS) to assist with the project. They will be looking for ways to best address these issues and to look for creative ways to finance a project of this scope. A time-line has not been established at this time.

Security/Safety GoalOne of the School Board’s primary goals is re-

lated to enhancing school security. This was one of the main items that came out of our commu-nity and staff planning sessions last winter.

A school committee was formed to review our current plans and facilities. An outside agency was brought in to do a walk through and we have involved our Community Police Officer for additional insight.

The committee put a proposal together that has five phases. The five phases include items that are related to physical security, staff training, mental health services and educational priorities. Basically, we looked at many aspects of security and what is considered best practice.

The first phase of our plan was approved by the School Board. We are now in the design stage which includes adding secure entrances, door alarms and an intercom system.

I won’t get into details here, but there will be some changes coming.

After the designs are done, we will begin to identify contractors to complete the work.

The District has also begun to train staff in a

new approach to addressing active shooter situ-ations. Our new program (ALICE) is a national program and is being used by many school districts.

The Carlton County Sheriff ’s Department has recommended that we implement this model and they have provided training to the schools.

We used two of the snow make up days to train our staff in the ALICE model. This model is a little more proactive than our last plan, but still incorporates many of the same principles.

The bottom line is to help staff and students to prepare for something that we hope will never happen.

The timelines on this project are not set yet, but I would anticipate changes as early as this fall.

Convenience FeeThe District has been accepting credit cards

for a few years. Each credit card has a fee struc-ture that varies by company and type of card.

The fees weren’t substantial the first few years, but have grown as more people use the conve-nience of a credit card to pay for school fees.

To address this cost the District will begin implementing a convenience fee of 3% per trans-action.

This will assist meeting our financial goals going forward. Families can still pay with cash or check without having to pay the convenience fee.

EnrollmentLast year was the largest number of students

enrolled in Esko Public Schools history. We have had to limit open enrollment in many of the grade levels so that we don’t outgrow our build-ing and staffing patterns.

This is a real tribute to theschool staff and the community. People want to live and attend school in Esko!

Ideas or Thoughts!

I enjoy having discussions with the great peo-ple of Esko. The School Board and I are working hard to provide the best educational experience that we can. Your feedback helps us to do this better. Please call with any questions or thoughts that you might have. (879-2969)

Winterquist Elementary News

Laurie GrothGreetings! I hope you have been able to enjoy

your summer. The start of the school year is quickly approaching. This is a busy time at the bus garage, planning and organizing bussing for the upcoming year. I would like to take this time to share some important information.

If there have been NO changes made to your bus route, your pick up and drop off times will remain the same as last year. If there have been changes made to your bus route, bus number or times, you will receive a letter in the mail with updated information. Look for this letter about mid-August.

In September, all students in kindergar-ten through 6th grade will receive Bus Safety Training. This is a required, annual training that covers bus rules, bus safety and emergen-cy evacuations. It is extremely helpful if our student’s families discuss and reinforce these Bus Safety rules at home. Your Bus Driver truly appreciates your help and support with this. Our bus rules are put in place to make sure ALL of our riders have a safe and enjoyable bus ride. SAFETY FIRST!!

The following are reminders for ALL of us to insure a safe school year.

Please be at your designated stop 5 minutes

Transportation Director Updatebefore your pick up time. Buses are on a specif-ic time schedule. Please be on time.

All students should be standing at their des-ignated pick up spot as soon as they see the bus approaching.

There is NO parking, drop offs or pick-ups allowed at the curbside, in front of the school, along Highway 61, or in the Esko Education Center parking lot. This is a very dangerous area for students. Please use the designated areas for drop offs and pickups.

No vehicles are allowed in the bus parking area, in front of the school, between the times of 7:55 AM to 8:10 AM and 3:00 PM to 3:20 PM. BUSES ONLY during these posted times.

Please DO NOT walk between the buses when they are lined up in the designated bus parking area. This is extremely dangerous and unsafe to model to our children.

There is NO eating allowed on buses during morning or afternoon routes.

I would like to thank everyone for all you do to help us with the safe transportation of your children. Your bus driver truly appreciates it! We take the safety of your children very seri-ously and work hard to make sure “our kids” are safe.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can call the bus garage at 879-4302.

This spring, a group of local gardeners got together with the help of some of the Cool Kids and planted the school gardens. We have 6 beds: a raspberry bed, a blueberry bed, a strawberry bed, a salad garden bed, a salsa garden bed and a pollina-tor bed. Cool Kids will be harvesting the garden to eat throughout the summer, but we hope the com-munity will come by and enjoy the gardens as well. If you are up for a salad this summer and don’t have the ingredients stop by and help yourself!

Thank you to Ruth Will, Deb Carlson, Samantha Dammer, Sheelar Fuchs, Chris-tine Ringat, Shelby Metzer, Cassie Janke, Gretchen Grover and the Cool Kids for making the garden thrive this summer. We appreciate you!

What’s in the garden?1. Raspberries 2. Blueberries

3. Strawberries4. Pollinator garden including plants

native to Minnesota and attractive to our local bee and butterfly populations such

as milkweed, wild bergamot and little bluestem among others.

5. Salad garden, including lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, sugar snap peas,

radish, onions and carrots. 6. Salsa garden, including jalapenos,

onion, red and green peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Winterquist P.I.E.

This Spring, the P.I.E. Group surveyed this community regarding fundraising activities and school projects, and the response was amazing! Thank you for responding and help-ing us to reform and better serve this school and community! The results came back with around 82% of the community in favor of a 1 time a year, donation based fundraiser, to re-place of the fundraiser that we had previously been using, where products were purchased from Club’s Choice and 40% of the proceeds went to the P.I.E. Group, and then filtered into the school. With the survey feedback taken into consideration, we are excited to announce that this coming fall, we plan to kick off our first annual “Fill the Igloo” donation drive. This past year, during the Club’s Choice fund-raiser we raised around $9,000. This means that the actual cost to this community last year was approximately $22,500 since we only received 40% of the proceeds!! Our hope is to greatly reduce the cost to the community while increasing our funding and ability to meet the needs in our school. By making this change, we can cut the amount this communi-ty spends in half ! We appreciate your support through this change SO much.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 for our student body population of almost 700 students. With that money we will be able to help supplement the teacher’s funding, and get them the sup-plies that they are needing to help students. We will be able to continue to bring in enrich-

ment programs for our students. In addition, we hope to offer some anti-bullying and mental health awareness activities, and we will be able to keep saving you money in field trips and other activity expenses by offsetting the costs of these opportunities for families.

If our goal is met through this “ONE and done” fundraiser, we will not plan to do any other fundraisers during the course of the school year. P.I.E. will continue to do appar-el sales, yearbook sales, and the Pound the Pavement 5K, as those are services/events we provide for the elementary school com-munity and are not actually “fundraisers” for us. If our goal is not reached, we may have to supplement with some additional fundraisers throughout the year, but our hope is to not have to do that!

Also, as a reminder, any parent of a student in Winterquist Elementary School is encour-aged to attend P.I.E. meetings. This is where the decisions are made of how money will be spent. We meet in the boardroom at 6:30 on the second Monday of every month during the school year (excluding December). We hope to see you there! Esko P.I.E. would not exist without you. If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming fundraiser change, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected]. We appreciate the role that each of you play, especially in being a support to your individual student at home! Thank you!

One of the most satisfying, fun, and productive ways to unite teenagers to

senior citizens, is to spend time providing senior citizens an extra hand in yard work like raking leaves and picking up garbage. On Wednesday, October 16, the Class of 2020 will be out in the Esko community learning valuable lessons about the meaning of volunteering their services and giving back to their community through hard work. When a community is doing well as a whole, its individuals are better off too. The annual Senior Clean-Up Day gives the students a strong sense of fulfillment, responsibility, and commitment. It is an opportunity to thank the community of Esko for everything it has provided for the students throughout their years of growing up.

The students will begin working at 8:30AM and will call the day before to confirm an approximate time they will be at your house. The students can place the leaves in bags you provide or bring them to an area of your property that you designate. Please use the form below to sign up for the annual Class of 2020 Clean-Up Day

needed to list all children. Fill in the circle if a child is in foster care (a welfare agency or court has legal responsibility for the child).

Step 2: Case Number

If any household member currently participates in the Special Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Minnesota Family Investment

Program (MFIP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), write in your case number, check which program you

participate in, and then go to Step 4. If you do not participate in any of these programs, leave Step 2 blank and continue on to Step

3. WIC and Medical Assistance (M.A.) programs do not qualify for this purpose.

Step 3: Adults / Incomes / Last 4 Digits of Social Security Number • List all adults living in the household (everyone not listed in Step 1) whether related or not, such as grandparents, other

relatives, or friends. Include any adult who is temporarily away from home, like a student away at college. Attach another page

be shared with Minnesota Health Care Programs, check the “Don’t share” box in Step.

Annual Health and Safety

Notifications AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emer-gency Response Act) Federal legislation requires public schools to maintain a list of locations and types of asbestos found in the school building and a description for their proper management. The Asbestos Management Plan and related inspection

reports are available at the District Office. DRINKING WATER Esko Schools maintains

and produces its own water, as there is no city system to draw from in Thomson Township. The school’s water system treats and filters all water prior to distribution in the building, and drinking water is again filtered at each water fountain. Tony Compo, Lead Custodian, has received ongoing training and is licensed by the MN Department of Health as a “water treatment technician.” Water samples are taken weekly from both wells by the District and are then are sent to the Minnesota Department of Health for testing. To date, Esko Public Schools has met all requirements relating to the safety of our water supply system per MN Department of Health (MDH) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. Our water is used for drinking and preparation of meals daily. The testing log and results of the MDH & EPA tests are available at the District Office.

RADON Building tests have indicated that radon levels do not exceed the acceptable levels as established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Test results are available at the District Office.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY Through preventative measures and regular maintenance of our facility and its mechanical systems, Esko Schools monitors and works to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) for our students and staff using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines and recom-mendations. Questions or concerns regarding IAQ should be directed to the District Office.District Policies

Complete policy statements are available at the District office.

TITLE IX GRIEVANCE PROCEDUREAny student or employee of Independent School

District No. 99 who feels that he/she has been discriminated against in violation of the District’s policy shall avail themselves to the district griev-ance procedure.

ESKO PUBLIC SCHOOLS PESTICIDE NOTICEAll Minnesota schools are required to inform

parents/guardians and school employees that they may request to be notified prior to pesticide application on school property. Pesticides include

chemicals which are used to control insects, weeds, rodents or other pests as defined by the law (M.S. 123B.575, Subd.9).

In order to provide the required information, schools must maintain a list of parent/guardians and school employees who request notification. Schools must also provide information about individual pesticide application upon request, including the name of the pesticide product, and the time and location of the planned application. An estimated schedule of pesticide application is available for review or copying at the school office.

Pesticide and non-chemical treatments may be used in combination in and around schools for a variety of reasons, including the control of pests which have the potential to bite, sting, spread dis-ease, cause asthma, within the school building or to the school building itself, or to control pests or weeds that are seen as a nuisance.

The long-term health effects on children from the application of such pesticides or the class of chemicals to which they belong may not be fully understood. Children may be more susceptible to pesticides than adults due to their smaller size and rapid growth and development. Also their play-ful behavior may expose them to more pesticide residue.

To limit the potential pesticide exposure, this school follows safety regulations to ensure pesti-cides are applied properly. All pesticides products, which are used in and around school buildings, are required to be registered with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environ-mental Protection Agency.
