  • It has been the most effective, productive machinethat we have used consistently on the biggest, steepest, most difficult right of way. To achieve the production and cost of Nordstroms machine, other machines have been doubled up on a job, so it effectively requires two machines to equal what this machine can produce. I recommend using this machine wherever there are brush-clearing needs in steep mountainous terrain, High density stands, and cost effectiveness is an issue. My transmission line clearing program has been successful because of this machine and its crew.

    * Introduction I am here today to do a presentation on a new mechanical brush cutting machine. Over the past 10 years we have built it, cut it up and built it again. This project began in 1990. We were contracting for a power company on line construction. They indicated they had 400 miles of transmission line,100 to 200 feet in width, that was over grown and they really didnt have an efficient way to reclear it. Consequently, we made an agreement with them that they would allow us to try some different methods to accomplish the clearing. We did some research looking for a machine to do this. We thought we picked one of the better ones available and leased it for several months. We had major mechanical problems shaft, bearings, and wheel design. We found the excavator was too small, too light and underpowered. We had an oil and water cooling problem in temperatures over 80 degrees. We were losing 2 hours out of every 10 on the over heating problem.

We set out to build a cutting machine that would do an efficient job for us. We used a local blue printer and machine shop, brainstormed and eventually built a cutting unit. We attached the unit to a new 225B Cat excavator. When we attempted to pick it up off the shop floor, the only thing that came up was the back of the machine. With the help of a cutting torch, we cut the unit into small enough pieces we could carry to the scrap barrel. The second unit we built was one the machine would handle by adding an additional 6500 pounds of counter weight to the excavator. We added an auxiliary hydraulic system so the head would have the power to cut more efficiently. During the next 8 years, every winter we would make improvements to the machine based on what we found we needed during the past seasons experience. We added additional oil and water cooling capability so the machine works efficiently in all temperatures. We added horsepower to run the cutting wheel through heavier material. We added grousered tracks so the machine would handle steep and wet terrain. The next step was to put the cutting unit on a 322BLL forest machine which gave us optimal stability. *IntroductionI am here to talk about a machine that we build. We have had a prototype machine in development and working for the last 10 years. This machine is the end result. There is a need in the industry for an efficient, productive and dependable machine. One that can work a variety of terrain, capable of cutting any and all material it encounters and has low maintenance. The ever growing environmental restraints on burning are going to require the forest industry to come up with alternatives that work. The machine will fill that need.

This machine is a CAT 322BLL with the forest package. It was ordered with a backhoe boom and stick and two foot rise elevated cab. We then added a custom built cutter head. We have a patent pending as a complete unit.

At present, we know of no competition for this machine. None other has the size, power nor head rotation essential in production on large and heavy material.*APPLICATIONS: Over the past 10 years we have worked the machine for Avista utilities reclearing power lines, for the BLM on precommericial thinning, clearing brush fields and treating logging slash and for the Forest Service on fire line construction. We have worked for two ski resorts on ski runs.* POWER LINE RECLEARING: Removal of brush and evergreens leaves a mat of debris which retards regrowth. It also makes patrolling the line and repair crew access easier. At the same time, access roads can be cut out. The rotation feature on the head allows side trimming of the larger trees at the edge of the right-of-way. Hand slashing leaves a deep accumulation of debris which is very difficult to get through and creates a high fire situation.* POWER LINE RECLEARING: 1: On this job we started in late November, we had 26 inches of snow. 2: We started at the bottom went over the top on the ridge, and cut are way back to the bottom in one day. 3: This is a picture of the following June. * SELLING POINTS: This machine is very friendly to the environment, does minimal compaction, leaves the debris in place to eliminate erosion, retains moisture, retards brush and weed growth, adds nutrients to the soil and eliminates need fir burning and hence no smoke. The machine has no competition. It easily handles the weight of the attachment, handles all types of terrain. It has an independent engine and oil flow for powering the cutting wheel which allows use to handle heavier and larger material. The cooling system will handle extreme air temperatures resulting in more production. The unit bearing shaft and frame are built extremely heavy and maintenance and repair are minimal.**
