NorDx Scarborough, Maine

As Maine Health members NorDx and Maine Medical partners continued to grow, the building they shared could no longer house all functions. NorDx set out to create a new home that would allow their laboratory and administrative department to grow in a lean, efficient manner.

As they began renovation of an existing retail center to house their 23,000 sq. ft. laboratory and 40,000 sq. ft. administrative center, the NorDx team wanted to implement a lean approach to their new environment. Their goals: Save space, consolidate functional processes, improve communications across teams and create efficiencies throughout.

Initially, the client considered reusing existing furnishings, including outmoded systems with high panel heights. In order to demonstrate the possibilities associated with high-quality Haworth products, the team flew the client to Vancouver to tour a lab using 13 year old product from UNICELL (Haworth’s healthcare partner). The NorDx project team was convinced to move forward once they saw that the Haworth/UNICELL solution stood the test of time - functionally and aesthetically.

Molecular Pathology: Multiple shifts have the ability to move storage in order to accommodate technologists’ needs. The storage cells also support the new Material Management standards.

Because UNICELL laboratory benches readily integrate with Compose systems and adaptable desking components, as well as other products, the administrative workstations and lab areas share a consistent aesthetic. In addition, special products were added to address the lab’s extensive electrical requirements. The Haworth dealer worked closely with corporate engineering to ensure that the system was viable and properly specified.

Anticipating that the laboratory will continue to grow, NorDx can be quickly changed and reconfigured. This idea of an adaptable, integrated kit-of-parts has set a new standard for labs in the area. In addition, NorDx implemented an elaborate Materials Management process that ultimately increases work flow, saves space and realizes cost savings by centralizing supplies in a dedicated storage room. Supplies in the UNICELL storage units are inventoried and restocked as part of the new lean process.

Clinical: The sink module with phenolic surface is a critical component to this area of the lab.

Administrative Area: Open office areas are set up to encourage easy exchange of information among teams. The higher panels separate each group to allow some acoustical shielding.

Private offices share some of the same products, fit and finish as the open plan workstations. This gives the Administrative area an integrated aesthetic.

At the same time, employees are pleased that the environment meets their needs. The new lab uses lower panel heights to enhance collaboration and provide greater access to daylight. Off-the-floor storage and crisp finishes help make a clean, professional impression—ideal for a laboratory that is regularly inspected.

From the quality of the products and attention to detail, to the ease of installation, both the project team and staff are calling the new facility standards a tremendous success.
