WELCOME from your Scout ExecutiveHello Members of the Northeast Iowa Council,

As you read this, I will just be starting in the position of Scout Executive. I am very excited for this new opportunity and look forward to meeting many of you over the next couple of months. Before we meet, I wanted to tell you a bit about myself. My family and I hail from eastern Pennsylvania and it is our first time living in a different part of the country. My wife Carolyn and I are coming up on our 20th wedding anniversary this summer. We have a son and daughter, Mark 14 and Jamie 12.

On the professional front, before working for the BSA, I attended Kutztown University in PA and received a bachelors in Elementary Education. After a few years in the human services field I started my professional Scouting career in 1998. I have worked for the Minsi Trails Council in Pennsylvania, where I held many different positions in the areas of Traditional Scouting, Exploring, and Scoutreach. I am also Woodbadge trained.

On the hobby side I enjoy music, sports, and spending time with my family.

I am aware this council has a great reputation, and I look forward to working to continue the tradition of a great Scouting program for Northeast Iowa.

Yours in Scouting,

Matt KlutzaritzScout Executive/CEO

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Northeast Iowa Council Achieves Journey to Excellence Gold! Journey to Excellence is the BSA’s council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It replaced the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA. The Northeast Iowa Council received the highest honor for the Journey to Excellence as a Gold Council for 2014. This honor is not achieved by any single person, it is most definitely an entire community effort. Thank you so much for all your dedication to Scouting! We are so proud to provide a strong Scouting program for the youth of the NEIC.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

5

The Northeast Iowa Council is proud to share the work of volunteer Kathy Canfield this month! Kathy is an extremely dedicated Scouter who currently wears many hats for the Dubuque District. Kathy serves as the Charter Representative for Pack 7, Crew 7, and Troop 7, as well as the Program Chair and Training Chair for the Dubuque District. She has previously served as the Committee Chair & Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 7. Fellow volunteers with Troop 7 praised Kathy’s organization and persistence, calling Kathy a go-getter. When she is assigned a project, she sees it through to the very end. Kathy is Wood Badge Trained. The Dubuque District very much appreciates Kathy’s leadership. Kathy has done a great job for many years as the District Program Chair and has helped to fill the need for a District Training Chair in the last year (a position she has also held previously). Over her years with Scouts, Kathy has helped to train hundreds of leaders and volunteers.

Kathy is quite successful in her professional career as well. Kathy has been a hair designer for over 23 years at the award winning Stardust Salon, started by her mother. She hosts and teaches many beauty classes as well at the salon. She is married and has two children. In her free time, Kathy enjoys motorcycle rides with her husband and friends.

On behalf of the Northeast Iowa Council, please help us say thank you to a very dedicated Scouter, Kathy Canfield!

Scouting for Food 2015!Scouting for Food will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Scouts will begin collecting food from their assigned neighborhoods at 9 a.m. and take it to the Hy-Vee Food Store at 2395 NW Arterial. The food will be sorted and boxed there before being taken down to the Dubuque Food Pantry, and other neighboring food pantries.

This project is one of pride for Scouting in the community! The NEIC has been participating in this service project since 1990. Our food pantries are depending on us, as this drive alone supplies them with food for almost six months! Our goal is to collect 40,000 pounds of food in 2015! If all our Scouts do their part and we can get the community involved, we know the Scouts of the NEIC will reach our goal! Be sure to attend March’s Roundtable to receive your unit’s door hangers and further instructions. Any questions? Please contact the Scout Service Center or Doug Stahr.

Archdiocese Scout RecognitionMass Honors Many Scouts! The NEIC would like to congratulate James Vosberg from Troop 91 on receiving the St. George Emblem. The St. George Emblem is presented to an adult Scouter and supporters for their work in the Catholic Scouting movement. This emblem is given at the discretion of the Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting. This is a National recognition for local work.

Pack 91 and Troop 91 also earned the Pope Paul Quality Unit Award, meeting criteria in fifteen areas of quality unit activity.

These NEIC Cub Scouts earned the Light of Christ Emblem: Aidan Jaeger, Eli Kluesner, Connor McCarraher, Ethan McGovern, Jacob Schlarmann, and Morgan Schulte from Pack 60; Aidan Jenaman from Pack 91; and Brandon Kass from Pack 100.

Parvuli Dei Emblem recipients will be printed in the next Nor’Easter.

2015 Friends of Scouting CampaignThe start of the New Year brings the kick off of our Annual Friends of Scouting Campaign! For those who do not know, Friends of Scouting (FOS) is a way to fundraise for the Northeast Iowa Council within your local community. Funds raised through FOS enables the NEIC to keep costs down for our Scouting families and to provide activities such as the Klondike and Pinewood Derbies, Spring and Fall Camporees, trainings, and many more events throughout the year. It also helps us keep the cost of summer camp down at Camp C.S. Klaus. While you are planning your Blue & Gold Banquet or Court of Honor, please contact your District Executive a couple of weeks in advance and we will happily send a representative to your event. While the representative is at your Banquet or Court of Honor, they will give an FOS presentation, and they will also help promote the 2015 summer camping season for both Camp C.S. Klaus and the Cub Day Camps throughout the Council.

Exploring is for all students

ages 14-21,male & female.

You do NOT have to be a registered

Boy Scout.

Exploring is off to a Great Start!Exploring had a great year in 2014! Fifty more youth joined an Exploring Post this past fall in comparison to the fall of 2013. National also introduced the concept of an Exploring Club for middle school aged students. This allowed us to expand a bit on the work we were already doing with 8th graders for career fairs, and also allowed Exploring to count these youth in our Council Journey to Excellence score, which achieved “Gold” again this year.

Looking ahead to the spring season for 2015, we are working on schedules with our spring units such as Computer Science with Loras College, Fire Fighting with East Dubuque Fire, and Architecture with FEH Associates. Exploring is hoping to nail down schedules with some new post prospects for skilled trades and military careers. We will be helping Clayton Ridge High School with a career fair. And finally we will be supplying career surveys to ten area high schools to learn what career interests students have to better provide programs.

Looking for Marketing Committee MembersThe Council is looking for some help and members for their Marketing Committee. The Council has been taking many steps to improve & streamline our communication between units and volunteers, but we cannot do it alone. There are many projects to complete and many media outlets to utilize. If you would like to help in anyway, please contact Laura Cornelis. It could be as simple as helping to find spotlight articles on standout volunteers or Scouts for the website front page & newsletter, or taking pictures for the Council at Scouting events or documenting new Eagle projects. The NEIC also wants to better showcase the wonderful impact Scouting has on the community! Do you have creative ideas or ideas for community involvement? We would love to receive your input! Contact Laura Cornelis at the Scout Service Center.

Special EventsThere is quite a lot of planning that goes on at the beginning of each year for all the special events we have throughout the year. Committees for the Eagle Brunch and the Scouter Appreciation Dinner have been working very hard, and our work is nearly complete. If you have any pictures from your unit or Scouting events throughout the year for the slide show at the Appreciation Dinner, please e-mail them to Laura Cornelis at [email protected]. In addition to this, committees for the Council’s Annual Boy Scout Golf Classic, and the Camp Klaus Golf Open held in the Dellaykee District will begin meeting in February. These golf fundraisers help raise money for Camp C.S. Klaus each summer.
