Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe was at aFingal Dublin Chamber breakfast at the RadissonBlu Hotel at Dublin Airport, in the company of localMinister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr JamesReilly. In a private interview with this newspaper,Ministers Donohoe and Reilly confirmed that 2021is the date when the first sod will be turned,provided that the present Government are returnedto power in the upcoming general election.This is the first concrete commitment byGovernment to the delivery of Metro North. Duringhis speech earlier that morning, Minister Donohoewas noncommittal about a date for the commence-ment of Metro North, saying that it was difficult topin down. During his speech, he said that nothingwould happen before 2017, as there were issueslike the Railway Order, which is a complicated plan-ning project, as well as tendering, amongst otherconsiderations.This all changed when this reporter asked him, in aprivate interview after the event, whether hardpressed commuters in theNorth County, who haveendured promises fromsuccessive Governmentsover the years could beguaranteed delivery of Metro North. MinisterDonohoe replied by saying, “Yes, Metro North willdefinitely happen. It will be funded by the

Exchequer. If we have a period of economic growthand political stability, I believe we will have a Metroproject. This is a commitment I can give, but thereare assumptions underneath it, regarding our

economy. However, I firmlybelieve that the bestproject is Metro North.When asked if the countryslipped back into reces-

sion, as this is a 12 year project, would it affect thedelivery of Metro, the Minister said that this is the case in all projects. It was then that he

confirmed that construction of Metro North willhappen in 2021.Local Minister Dr James Reilly, who was in thecompany of Minister Donohoe when the date wasconfirmed, told the County Leader; “This is greatnews further confirming the Government’s commit-ment. The timeline is both real and realistic and it’sgreat news for people and businesses in Swordsand the greater North County area.”“Connectivity to the city is critical to further growthand prosperity of the North County. Metro Northprovides accessibility to the city for our youngpeople to pursue their education. It also providesaccessibility for visitors to enjoy what Fingal has tooffer, with the largest number of tourists enteringDublin Airport since the peak in 2008. Dublin Airport has broken its previousrecord last week for the number ofpassengers processed in a single year,with the rest of its December traffic stillto come. So far, more than23.5 million passengers havepassed through Dublin Airportthis year, beating the airport’sprevious record for passengertraffic which was set in 2008.Commenting on the news,Dublin Airport ManagingDirector Vincent Harrisonsaid: “Dublin Airport is havinga record year for passengernumbers due to stronggrowth across all majorsectors of the market.” He furtherexplained that passenger numbers areup 16 per cent, with record numbers ofpeople travelling to and from Dublin onEuropean, UK, transatlantic and interna-tional routes. With the rest of Decemberstill to come, the Airport has already

welcomed more than 3.1 million extrapassengers in 2015. The growth in passenger numbers isdue to a combination of 23 new routes

and significant additionalcapacity on many existingairline services, as the Airportoffers about 1.5 million extraseats which is a 13 per centincrease in numbers of seatsavailable. This year, the Airportestablished five new long-haulservices and 18 new short-haulservices.“The new routes and extracapacity contributed to a verystrong summer period, as

more than 5.3 million passengers usedDublin Airport during July and August,which is our busiest time of the year,”Mr Harrison continued. Next year,Dublin Airport will launch new routes toCancun in Mexico and Montego Bay in Jamaica.

New Passenger Record ForDublin Airport

On Friday 4thDecember, 13 youngvolunteers from 6thclass in Holy FamilySNS carried out theirLocalise communityaction project, beauti-fying an area of RiverValley. The youngpeople, together withtheir LocaliseCommunity YouthOfficer and staff ofHoly Family SNS,connected with thelocal HilltownEnvironmental Groupand their local TIdyTowns, planning andorganising a clean upof the local area. The event was organ-ised in conjunction

with Gerry White,Chairman ofRivervalley TidyTowns Group whoover the last few

weeks has co-ordi-nated the planting ofover 3,000 springbulbs in 10 differentflowerbeds around theRivervalley/Rathingleestate. In the earlyspring, there will be asea of colour as thebulbs being to grow.Gerry would like tothank all the volun-teers who worked veryhard work during thesummer months. Theirhard work paid off asthey won the BestEstate “Adopt a Patch”in the Swords/Balbriggan area in theFingal County CouncilsEnvironmental Awardsback in September.

White told the CountyLeader, “Thirteen chil-dren from the Localisegroup in Rivervalleytook part in plantingspring bulbs in theflowerbed atBrookdale round-about. The childrenwere from the localHoly Family SNS andthey planted over 300spring bulbs in a onehour project. TheLocalise Group co-ordinators wereTherese O’Leary andSiobhan Leonard andthey were delightedwith the enthusiasmand hard work of thechildren with thisproject,” he said,

Local CouncillorTacklesHomelessnessThe North County’s 2015 winterrough sleeper count was conductedsuccessfully across the region,

beginning on the night of 30thNovember and finishing at 6.00amon 1st December last. This countwas coordinated by the DRHE andinvolved the participation of acombination of volunteersand full time employees ofstatutory and voluntaryhomeless service providersin Dublin. The aim of thecount is to gather informa-tion and establish anumber of how manypeople are actuallysleeping rough throughoutthe region. One of theparticipants in the count for theSwords region was Cllr Joe Newman. The County Leader contacted Cllr.Newman who told us that, as a localcouncillor he wanted to find out firsthand how many local people wereactually on the streets. With the levels of homelessnessacross the country reaching crisispoint, they were expecting to findmany people trying to take shelter

wherever they could throughoutthe local area. What they found however, was thatin the North County area, particu-larly Swords, where Newmanhimself had been, had a surpris-ingly low number of homelesspeople. Talking to this paper, he told usthat: “We were expecting the worstbut we were pleasantly surprised.We only came in contact with oneman who was sleeping rough. Weoffered him help, asked him if heneeded to get in somewhere forthe night and if he needed

anything and he actuallyrefused our help. We didprovide him with asleeping bag, but herefused any further helpfrom us.” This is a small ray of lightin a very dark situation.While the situation seemsto be either worsening orremaining at a stalemate

throughout the country, It seemsthat the County Council’s efforts totackle homelessness in the areaare definitely working. While The Dublin Region HomelessExecutive (DRHE) will confirm thedetail from the official winter counton Thursday, December 10th, itseems that all is not lost for the FIngal region in terms ofhomelessness.

Olympic Hero Honoured By Local ScoutsLocal boy Billy Kane fromSwords was honoured bythe 171st Dublin RiverValley Scout Group afterexcelling himself at theSpecial Olympics WorldSummer Games. Afterachieving a huge successwinning two Gold medals,three Silver medals andone Bronze medal, theGroup along with hisparents and friends paidtribute to Billy, the prideof the Irish team.Being a child with DownSyndrome, the 15 year oldstarted training ingymnastics at the earlyage of six years. Thetraining helped him withhis co-ordination and

discipline. Last year, hewon the five Gold medalsand one Silver medal atthe national games inLimerick which made itpossible for him to enterthe World Games in LosAngeles in July this year. “To our astonishment, hewas drawn for the WorldGames in LA and we alltravelled to the USA tosupport the 88 Irishathletes taking part. Itwas a wonderful experi-ence, particularly as Billycame home with twoGold, three Silver and oneBronze medal,” Billy’smother Geraldine Kane

said. “Rivervalley Scoutshave been very supportiveof Billy throughout theyears of him being amember. This shows thatno matter what thedisability is, with hardwork and supportanything can beachieved,” she added. The Chief Scout, ChristyMcCann congratulatedBilly on his achievementsand explained that heepitomised the ScoutPromise in that a Scout iscalled upon ‘always to dotheir best’. He continuedthat Billy is an inspirationto all members in theGroup, doing his best andachieving his best.

Local Fianna Fail senator, DarraghO’Brien says he is horrified by theremarks made on nationalradio last weekend by LouiseO’Reilly, the Sinn Féin electioncandidate for this constituency,regarding the murder ofDetective Garda Jerry McCabe. O’Brien made the commentsafter O’Reilly refused tocondemn the brutal murder of the Garda who was gunned down in the line of dutyby IRA members. He said, “The remarks made by LouiseO’Reilly on national radio last weekendare deeply shocking. She was asked astraightforward question as to whether

she condemned the murder of DetectiveGarda Jerry McCabe. Instead of

condemning the murder, sheinstead attempted to deflectthe question, and remarkedthat the conversation was‘hilarious’. It was truly sick-ening to listen to,” saidO’Brien.“As a staunch supporter of theGardai, I recognise the difficultjob they are expected to carryout day in and day out. I have

spoken in support of the Gardai onnumerous occasions in the Seanad andhave been fighting for the force to beadequately resourced in the face ofGovernment cutbacks. Ms O’Reilly

seemingly has no idea of the high levelof respect that the people of NorthCounty Dublin have for our Gardai.”“The mask has slipped with Sinn Féin.Ms O’Reilly says that she is a newgeneration of candidate, but she cannoteven bring herself to condemn themurder of those that are employed toserve and protect our communities. Thecomments she made shows that SinnFéin has a twisted moral compass. SinnFéin are simply unfit to govern. “Ms O’Reilly will find little support herein Dublin Fingal for her cold and heart-less views on Gardai. The fact that shecould laugh about the murder of a Gardaon national radio, and label the incidentas ‘hilarious’, says enough about howshe feels about those tasked withserving and protecting our communi-ties,” concluded O’Brien.

The newly formed Balbriggan Community Liaison Committee hosted the Balbriggan TownAwards on Tuesday 1st December in the Bracken Court Hotel. The Awards, which weretraditionally hosted by Balbriggan Town Council have been a great success over the yearsand have had the support of the wider community. The Balbriggan Community LiaisonCommittee comprises local community and business representative groups workingtogether with elected members of the Balbriggan area, supported by Fingal CountyCouncil to provide a forum where local issues are regularly raised and reviewed. TheBalbriggan Town Awards provide an ideal opportunity for the community in Balbriggan tonominate people who deserve recognition of their achievements in the areas ofCommunity, Business, Sport, Art and Culture. The Awards are aimed at recognising peoplewho have represented the community on a local, national or international scale, peoplewho provide support to others on a voluntary basis, charitable works, artistic or sportingachievement or business success. The event was attended by many local representatives,including Cllr Brian Dennehy, who deputised for the County Mayor. Also present were CllrsTony Murphy, Grainne Maguire and Malachy Quinn, all of whom presented awards. Theawards kicked off with music from the St. Patrick’s Brass and Reed Band , followed by anexhibition of dancing from Scoil Rince Cualann.

The annual Valley Cancer Walk inaid of the Irish Cancer Societytook place in October, in whatwas the biggest and mostsuccessful walk to date.A cheque for a whopping €4,924was handed over by walk organ-iser, Margaret Harris to KateO’Reilly of the Irish CancerSociety at Peacock’s in RiverValley on Tuesday last, 1stDecember.Kate told the County Leader,“This is Margaret’s ninth year toorganise the walk and we areabsolutely delighted with thesupport it provides each year forthe society. Irish Guide DogsThe charity organisation Irish Guide Dogs for the Blindin Balbriggan recently had a reason to celebrate, asthey count 30 years in existence. During their celebra-tion gathering, they looked back at three decades ofoffering support to both blind and vision impairedpersons living in the North County and beyond. With their services, Irish Guide Dogs have helpedmany people suffering from blindness winning backtrust, independence and dignity through theirspecially trained dogs. The charity, whose incomeconsists of 80 per cent of voluntary donations andfundraisings, is also supporting children living withautism and their entire families that are affected bythese conditions. Speaking on behalf of Irish Guide Dogs, guide dogowner Tom O’Neill told the County Leader: “30 yearsof Irish Guide Dogs have given us independence andfreedom. We’ve had some highlights and some lowpoints. A support group, which wasset up by parents ofteenage girls, who claim tohave developed serioushealth problems throughhuman pappilomavirus(HPV) vaccine, will havetheir grievances aired on adocumentary. ‘CervicalVaccine: Is It Safe?’ airs onMonday next, 14thDecember at 10pm on TV3.It follows a story which wasreported in the CountyLeader last May.Gardasil is the ingredient in

the HPV vaccine, which wasadministered to teenagers,many from the North Countyto protect against a virusthat causes cervical cancer,his claimed to have causedlong-term health difficultiesin their daughters.A number of families in theNorth County claim thattheir daughters have experi-enced life changing effectssince being injected withthe vaccine in their first yearat secondary school. KyvaMurphy from Swords spoke

to the County Leader abouthow her daughter, Kellynow 17, has not been ableto attend school since shereceived the vaccine threeyears ago.Kyva contacted this news-paper to let us know aboutthe upcoming documentaryand said. “Since this wasfirst reported and thesupport group REGRET wasset up, there are many morereports of families beingaffected by Gardasil. Indeedmany of them are familiesfrom the North County, sohopefully, this documentarywill go a long way to usgetting the support andrecognition we trulydeserve,” she said.

While this certainly securedhis place in the hearts ofmany, it would be the progres-sion of the Northern Irishpeace process and hisarduous efforts to strengthenAnglo-Irish relations thatwould define his tenure asTaoiseach.Known for his controversialalignment with the politicaltraditions of the IrishParliamentary Party, JohnBruton was decidedlydifferent from most Irishleaders before him.Since leaving office in 1997John Bruton has had a full andvaried political career, puttinghim in good stead to pen thevarious speeches, articles,blogs and interestingly, bookreviews that appear in ‘Faith

In Politics’.The book is essen-tially the collectedpublic musings ofthe formerTaoiseach. Hetouches on every-thing from world affairs to reli-gion and each is presented asrelatively short essay stylechapters. Many of the essays or articlesin the book will giveyou pause forthought. Hisu n f l i n c h i n gcommentary onwhat he sees asthe “mistakenlyr o m a n t i c i s e d ”c e n t e n a r ycommemorationsare sure to comeunder fire frommany Irish republi-cans. However, the section onthe environment is very infor-mative. He offers very innovative and creative solu-tions to real current globalissues such as globalisationand urbanisation. The section where he presentshis book reviews is interesting

although perhaps alittle out of place,but it does serve asa good seguel tothe two final chap-ters, ‘world poli-tics’ and ‘religion’.As he says himselfin a previouschapter, “Some sayreligion and poli-tics shouldn’t mix”,perhaps this is why

the chapter on religion is keptuntil last. Set apart, perhapssuggesting that his own reli-gious beliefs, while very mucha part of who he is, always

remained separatefrom his politics.We see a man offaith through thepages of this book.Faith not only in hisspiritual leanings butin his country and inold traditions ofpeace over violence. Whether or not youwere a fan of hisgovernance, ‘Faith In

Politics’ will no doubt be aninteresting read to anyoneinterested in Irish politicalthought, debate and history. Itis brave and insightful and attimes even poignant andoffers an alternative viewpoint for some pivotalmoments in Irish history.

Somestudents were busypacking bags at the tillsin Dunnes, while otherswere out in the centre,selling a ‘Cook Book’ thatwas put together by theTransition Year students,and taking part in fitnessprojects to demonstratethe importance ofkeeping fit in positivemental health mainte-nance. Teacher, SiobhanLynch was supervisingthe students that wereout in the centre and saidthat; “It was a greatexperience for all thestudents involved and fora very worthy cause.”

Dr Larkan works at Trinity’s Centre forGlobal Health and heads up its MScprogramme. She has a strong personalinterest in disability issues, as her sisterhas an intellectual disability.The County Leader contacted Dr. Larkanto ask her about her newly appointedposition and what it means to her; “Forme, the role of Chair does several very importantthings, as I’ve said previously I have a personalcommitment to persons with disabilities, and Ihave a love of Africa (where CBM Ireland does

much of its work) which goes back many years,ever since I first visited Zambia in the 70’s whenmy father worked for Aer Lingus. I feel particu-larly fortunate to find myself in a position wheremy professional background aligns with mypersonal interests and commitments. Thatallows me to make a contribution in a way thatis meaningful for me, and I hope for CBMIreland.”Dr Larkan explained that she hopes to revisitthis clinic in Zambia shortly; “One of my aims asCBM Ireland Chairperson is to strengthen thelinks between the health research community in

Ireland and those working in the fieldwith CBM tackling health and disabilityissues.”Fiona is keen to bring her own work inthe global health field, specifically inaddressing the social aspects of HIV inSouth Africa, to bear on CBM Ireland’soverseas programmes; “CBM Ireland’sfocus is on making sure that no-one getsleft behind — particularly people withdisabilities. As a global health practi-

It is to explain the key political, cultural and military developments at the time of the1916 Rising.This public symposium will make accessible to ageneral audience, scholarship of the variousaspects of life in Ireland a century ago. Invitedspeakers will explain the key political, culturaland military developments during this pivotalperiod in Irish history and place 1916 in context.The first session includes contributions on JohnRedmond and his party, Irish unionism, theUnited States and Rising, and a paper placing1916 in an international context.The next session features assessments of therole of women, the Gaelic League, the literaryrevival, and radical nationalism and the thirdsession evaluates the respective position ofLabour, na Fianna Éireann, the Irish Volunteersand the British army in the period 1914 to 1916.The closing session assesses the impact andlegacy of 1916. As the European Commission announced plansthis week for a new Directive on Terrorism, BrianHayes the FG Dublin MEP has said: “Europe’svulnerability was highlighted again in the Parisattacks. It is important that Europe acts togetherin the fight against terrorism. The proposal by theEuropean Commission for a new Directiveon Terrorism is an important first step.Member States must protect them-selves, but it is equally importantthat all of the EU have a commondefinition of terrorism and worktogether to combat it.”He further stated that “The Directivewill completely overhaul existing legis-lation dealing with terrorism. It will crim-inalise travelling within and outside the EUfor terrorist purposes and the funding of terroristoperations. It will also increase law enforcementpowers to deal with suspected training of terror-ists and ensure the better sharing of data onsuspected terrorists between EU Member

States”. Hayes hasbeen to the front in thecampaign to have thePassenger NameRecognition (PRN)implemented. It seemsthat Parliament andmember states areclose to agreement inrespect of air travel.There are some

outstanding issues: the length of time such datamay be held and Parliament’s insistence on thesharing of all of the information to be put on a

mandatory footing across all countries. These matters must be resolved. The

Directive is to the benefit of all citizensacross Europe. It makes monitoringof terrorist movement much easier.It will of course have a cost due toadditional procedures and also

intrusion into each of our move-ments. Regrettably throughout

Europe, our cities, air traffic, airports orother strategic installations are vulnerable

to attack. We, living in the North County in closeproximity to both the capital and the airport,must welcome all reasonable measures whichwhen effectively implemented will reduce the riskof terrorist action here or throughout Europe.

Swords newest bar, Empire Bar and Grill, which is situated on Main Street celebrated itsfirst anniversary on Thursday last. This award winning bar scooped the Best Bar inLeinster award recently, as well as Pub of the Year at the Fingal Dublin Excellence inBusiness awards. What is amazing about these prestigious awards, is that there wereachieved after just nine months in business. They havewelcomed their prize, aday at the EuropeanParliament in Strasbourg. Euroscola is aprogramme run by theEuropean Parliament thatgives students across the28 European memberstates the unique oppor-tunity to first-hand expe-rience European integra-tion for a day.

In their project, theypretended to be candi-dates, running in theEuropean election. Theydesigned electionposters and discussedthree current Europeanissues that affect Ireland.After winning theNational competition,they were invited torepresent Dublin andIreland in the EuropeanParliament. Along with600 fellow studentsacross Europe, studentsfrom St. Joseph’s get thechance to take part indebates and committee

meetings about impor-tant up-to-date topics,while experiencingdemocratic votings in theEuropean Parliament.Commenting on theschool’s success, MEPBrian Hayes (FG) said:“St. Joseph’s and Rushcan be very proud. Theyare an inclusive organisation where parents do notidentify themselves by their children’s age, how theydied, or if their death was recent or many years ago.What they provide is a safe place for bereaved parentsto connect with others who understand the intensity ofthe grief and loss. Although they do not offer coun-selling, each group has a lending library and informa-tion on the other services available to parents andfamilies in the local community.

Lesotho in February.Students were drawinga digital map ofLesotho, SouthAfrica,which will behighly accurate anddownloadable for free. Collette Cronin,teacher at PortmarnockCommunity School,explained thatstudents are using anopen source editingsoftware to convertsatellite images intomapped co-ordinatesfor all the buildings,roads and rivers in

Lesotho. This allows toanalyse the layout ofLesotho in terms ofwhether buildings arelocated too closely towater bodies, or ifpeople are living tooclose to the roadsides.“It goes beyond sayingthat this is a problemand helps us under-stand which districtsare worse and the sizeof the buildings thatare involved,” Ms.Cronin said. The Irish Cancer Society hascalled for Government actionon the breast cancer gap.According to a recent study bythe National Cancer RegistryIreland (NCRI), women fromthe most deprived areas are33 per cent more likely to diefrom breast cancer thanwomen in wealthier areas.One of the main reasons forthis survival gap is thatwomen living in the mostdeprived areas are more likelyto be diagnosed much laterwith breast cancer. As a resultthey have a lower chance ofsurviving it. The NCRI studyalso showed that 76.5 per cent

of women diagnosed throughsymptoms instead of breastcheck were from disadvan-taged areas, compared to 67per cent of more affluentwomen.Responding to the study,Oncologist Dr. Janice Walshesaid: “Variables such as thelevel of patient education,other co-existing medicalconditions, and the potentialloss of income and increasedexpenses that commonlyoccur while one is undergoingtherapy are undoubtedly ofgreat significance.”Speaking during Breast CancerAwareness Month, Kathleen

O’Meara, Head of Advocacyand Communications statedthat breast cancer affectsthousands of women acrossIreland, including those of theNorth County, with almost3,000 new cases every year.She continued that thenumber of women gettingbreast cancer is on theincrease but so is the numberof women surviving it. “Thispositive trend hides aworrying gap in survival ratesbetween the least and mostdeprived women in thecountry. Ireland has become avery unequal society when itcomes to health problems,particularly cancer and accessto healthcare,” she concluded.

Breast Cancer Gap Revealed

The Asthma Society of Ireland launched the resultsof a significant investigation into the wellbeing andmental health of Irish adults with asthma. The studyrevealed that 61 per cent of people living withasthma in Ireland, including those of the NorthCounty, have admitted experiencing depressivesymptoms. Another 20 per cent revealed they wereunable to work due to their health. According to thestudy 82 per cent of the respondents felt their phys-ical health was limited as a result of their asthma.

“The vision of a healthy Ireland is one whereeveryone can enjoy their physical and mental healthand wellbeing to their full potential,” SharonCosgrove, CEO of the Asthma Society of Ireland said.“This study highlights the need to make this vision areality for people with asthma. We need full imple-mentation of the national programme for asthmawithout further delay,” she continued. Jerry Buttimer, TD and Chair of the OireachtasHealth Committee commented that the studydispels the myth that Asthma is not a serious condi-tion. “It unearths new facts about the emotionaltrauma asthma can bring and the severe effects itcan have on quality of life,” he concluded.

In preparation for the StudentEnterprise Awards, enterprisingstudents at Colaiste Choilm in Swords,have set up companies in a bid to selltheir products to shops in the locality.The event is run jointly by the LocalEnterprise Office and local schools.Business teacher, Karl Foster told theCounty Leader about the imaginationand creativity of the students.“Colaiste Choilm is in the StudentEnterprise Awards and this is our 11thyear to participate. Students write abusiness report which is judged exter-nally and then they mount an exhibi-tion in February, where they meet

their judge and they, hopefully, takepart on the County Final . In theprevious 10 years, we have hadstudents who are now studyingBusiness at 3rd level and setting uptheir own companies and i t wasthrough this competition that they gottheir entrepreneurial drive,” he said.One of the part ic ipants, RonanShivnen (14) said, “As part of busi-ness we have to make our own minicompany and our product is a mini-biker repair kit that comes as a punc-ture repair kit and a spanner forremoving the wheel. It also includes amini first aid kit. Ronan visited RichiesBike Store in Swords in an effort toget them to carry some stock.Enterprising Ronan and his businesspartner, Peter Daly are not letting thegrass grow under their feet and theyhave their eyes firmly fixed on otherpotential customers. They plan to

introduce their product to SuperValu,as well as to Eurocycles in the NewYear. Another student, Caelan Byrneand his business partner, MarvelIhukovi have set up a company calledTenere Ink. They have developed aproduct that is potentially a moneyspinner, which they feel will be ofgreat benefit to practically everyone.Caelen explained, “Our company hasdeveloped a phone holder made outof acrylic. with a power bank under-neath i t . The functional i ty of theproduct means that you can hold yourphone securely and charge it at thesame time,” said Caelan. The realbenefit of this unique product is thatit is universal, meaning that i t is suitable for al l makes of phones and all sizes. “We hope to goaround the shops and other compa-nies to see i f they wil l stock ourproduct,” said Caelan.

Continued from page 1The recent report in a national newspaper regardingpublic order crime in the top 20 Dublin Gardadistricts, has included Swords, Balbriggan andSkerries in that list. The same report relating to drugoffences includes Swords in its top 20 list of DublinGarda districts. This has caused sharp differencesbetween local general election candidates from bothgovernment and oppoaition parties. The County Leader spoke to local elected publicrepresentatives, General election candidates, CllrTony Murphy (Independent Alliance), SenatorDarragh O’Brien (FF) and Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell.The latter was critical of the figures andsaid, “While I do not dispute the validity ofthe information on crime from the CSO, themanner in which these statistics have beenpresented is misleading and sensation-alist.”“This is particularly the case where a break-down of the top 20 Garda districts in Dublinis presented when there are actually only 8districts. Therefore, the presentation of thestatistics in this manner does not accu-rately portray the reality of the situation,”he said.Murphy and O’Brien both firmly blamed thelack of resources necessary to tackle thisproblem, as the predominant issue. Theyfeel that the North County is beingneglected in this respect, particularly as weare being told that the economy is in goodhealth and recent Exchequer figuresshowing record levels of tax returns havingbeen recorded.Murphy told the County Leader, “Withcutbacks during the recession, resourceshave been reduced and in some cases,removed. Now, as evidenced in recentreports, rural crime is now a factor due inmany respects to the proximity of the M1motorway, which facilitates easy access toareas like Balbriggan and Skerries. Ofcourse there are countless benefits thatcome with the motorway system, howeverease of access for criminals is one of the draw-backs,” said Murphy.Indeed, Murphy was the victim of a particularlyvicious attack on his business premises, where heand his wife were threatened by burglars. The perpe-trators were apprehended along the M1 as theymade their escape, further emphasising his point.This incident was the reason that Murphy decided toclose his business premises in Balbriggan, and it leddirectly to him becoming involved in politics, wherehe feels he can now influence legislation to combatthe scourge of criminality in the region.Murphy claims that the only way to counter thisproblem is by having adequate resources, particu-larly motorised resources. Without sufficient gardacars in the area, you don’t have a solution. Also thereare not enough gardai on foot patrol in the towns,”he said.He went on, “Gardai are seriously down onmanpower and it is compromising the safety of the

community. Remember that they have to attend tocall outs in Balbriggan, Rush, Lusk, Oldtown,Garristown, Naul and Ballyboughal. It’s absolutelyridiculous,” said Murphy.The lack of resources that are claimed to compoundthe crime statistics are, according to insiders,responsible for an uphill battle against drugs. A fewmonths ago, this newspaper covered the visit to theDrug and Alcohol Community Care Service in Swordsby Minister Aodhan O’Riordain to talk about theserious resource issues in the area.We spoke to Vince Rellis, manager of the NorthDublin Community Care Service about what

progress, if any was forthcoming on thisissue and he replied, “We can report noprogress by the Minister to address theserious inequity in service and resourceprovision for North County Dublin and thatwithin three weeks of his visit, there was atragic reminder of the human impact of thislack of action.”He continued, “Two young women from thearea had died while waiting to be assignedCase Workers in the Service. ‘it’s heart-breaking that their families had to gothrough this, especially when we knowfrom decades of research that being intreatment can prevent these tragedies.’We did write to the Minister to tell him whathappened and it was weeks before we evengot a response.”Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) alsoblasted the lack of resources, both infighting crime and in the scourge of drugabuse, which is closely related to crimi-nality. O’Brien, who is Chairperson of theNorth Dublin Regional Drug and AlcoholTask Force (DATF) told the County Leader,‘It’s unbelievably frustrating for us to findourselves in the position where we havelong waiting lists and no way to meet thedemand despite repeated requests forsupport.”‘We all know the resources are there. Howcan the minister justify the blatant

inequity. Where’s the planning in that and why arefamilies in North County Dublin less deserving?What does the Minister have against our residents,that he won’t support our families,” he said.Vince Rellis noted that, “despite us having respon-sibility for all of north Fingal up to Balbriggan, inreality because of the resource issues, we can’tprovide a base outside Swords yet which is a chal-lenge for people in terms of access. In anotherdevastating blow to families in North County Dublin,we were made aware that a recent application tothe Lotto fund to roll out an evidence based familysupport programme (Triple P) across the wholeregion was rejected. ‘what do we have to do to beheard,?” he saidDeputy Farrell said, “While I understand that manyresidents in the North County are concernedregarding reports on the number of assaults thatare taking place on our streets, and crime ingeneral, the fact is that, nationally, the amount ofassaults being committed has dropped every yearsince 2010. “We are committed to ensuring An Garda Síochánahave the support and infrastructure necessary totackle the challenges facing a modern, 21st centurypolice service.“Following its closure by the previous government,Fine Gael in Government reopened the GardaTraining College in Templemore in September2014,” he said.“Over €5 million has been allocated to supportOperation Thor which is the new national crime andanti-burglary operation, recently launched by AnGarda Síochána. I am committed to continuing totackle crime at both a national and local level.Finally, with regard to the Regional Drugs TaskForce, having spoken with Minister O’Ríordáin, I canconfirm that he is actively considering theirproposal in the context of a nationwide review ofthe work of Regional Drugs Task Forces,” heconcluded.

Following theEuropean AntibioticAwareness Dayrecently, pharmacistsin the locality andbeyond urge thepublic not to rely onantibiotics as the firstline of defence and touse them only whenabsolutely necessary. Speaking on behalf of

the Irish PharmacyUnion, presidentKathy Maher said:“Even if you feelmiserable, the simpletruth is that antibioticsdon’t work on coldsand flus or mostcoughs and sorethroats. Most viralinfections will clear upby themselves. Yourlocal pharmacist, whois a qualified health-care professional, canadvise you on whatyou can do to feelbetter.” Ms Maher furtherexplained that theoveruse of antibioticscan lead to bacteriabecoming resistant tothe antibiotic. Takingan antibiotic when it’snot clearly neededmakes it more likelythat a future infectionmay be caused by aresistant bacteria,which will be more

difficult to treat. Sheadvises to never takeantibiotics for coldsand flus and to alwaystake it as prescribedand to finish the fullcourse even if you feelbetter. “Antibiotics need tobe respected as a

precious life-savingmedicine to be used

sparingly and appro-priately and only whenabsolutely necessary.The overuse andmisuse of antibioticsis harmful to thefuture health of all ofus and is puttingpatients at risk,” MsMaher concluded.

Pharmacists Warn Of Antibiotics Misuse

The Alzheimer Society of Irelandand ASH Ireland, the anti-smoking group, have warnedpeople of the strong associationbetween smoking and dementiarisk. While diseases such cancer,stroke and heart disease are welldocumented, not many are awareof the direct links betweentobacco and the raised incidenceof dementia. There are 48,000people living with dementia inIreland a figure set to treble in ageneration. Next year eleven

people a day will developdementia in Ireland with TheAlzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI)estimating the average annualcost per person with dementia isestimated at €40,500. By 2041there will be 132,000 cases,according to projections.Overall, research shows thatsmokers have a 50 per centgreater chance of developingdementia than those who havenever smoked, but this decreasessubstantially upon stopping

smoking. Tina Leonard, Head ofAdvocacy and Public Affairs withASI said: “We are calling fordementia prevention to be inte-grated into national public healthprogrammes now alongsideother major non communicablediseases (NCDs) as we fight thegrowing prevalence of this condi-tion. It’s high time the concept ofbrain health underpinned ourleading health policies if we areto have a chance of stemmingthis tide,” she added.

Local TD Alan Farrell(FG) has welcomedthe recruitmentcampaign for thoseinterested in theNorth County toapply for one of 600new positions avail-able with An GardaSíochána.“The Minister for Justice andEquality, Frances Fitzgeraldhas announced the opening ofa recruitment campaign for

new members of AnGarda Síochána in2016,” Farrell stated.“So far, 295 newrecruits havecompleted theirtraining and are nowon the ground incommunities nation-wide as fully fledged

members of An GardaSíochána. It is expected thatsuccessful candidates from the2016 campaign will enter the

Garda College from mid 2016,”he added.Farrell went on to encouragecapable and ambitious peoplein the North County to join AnGarda Síochána and to make acontribution to the force. The Irish Cancer Society has recently expressedserious concerns about the number of peoplewaiting over three months for a colonoscopy, a testto detect cancer. At the end of November, 3,510public patients were waiting for over three monthsfor this test which is an increase of 954 people sincethe same period last year. The Irish Cancer Societyhas criticised the fact that private patients can getthe test done within 12 days, highlighting the healthgap between those who can pay and those whocannot.Commenting on the recent figures, Head ofAdvocacy and Communications at the Irish CancerSociety, Kathleen O’Meara said: “The Irish CancerSociety is deeply concerned by the large number ofpeople waiting longer than three months for acolonoscopy, a threatening 41 per cent of patients.The tragic reality is that we can expect somecolorectal cancers to be diagnosed when thepatients on waiting lists eventually receive theircolonoscopy.”

No More Delays ForCancer Tests

The figures have further shown and overall drop of725 patients waiting for the test in the past month,which is encouraging but not enough, according tothe Irish Cancer Society. “It is evident that long-term solutions are required tosolve this ongoing issue,” Ms. O’Meara continued.“The Irish Cancer Society wants to see adequateinvestment so there are enough radiographers andgastroenterologists working in Irish hospitals.”“No one should be waiting more than 13 weeks forthe colonoscopy. Considering the fact that there arestill 3,510 public patients waiting even longer, thedrop needs to continue and the underlying problemsolved,” Ms. O’Meara concluded.
