fishing spot at Matinecock on the northern shore of Glen Cove where they came across a body

that had apparently washed ashore. Local police were called to the scene. Upon investigation of

the body it was determined that the body had seven bullet holes and one leg and one arm missing;

presumed eaten away by fish. There was evidence that the body had been anchored down by the

murderer(s). Also there was a one-dollar bill found in his pocket. He was later identified as the

missing schooner Captain, Thomas Carpenter. A private funeral was held and the remains were

interred in the family plot in Sea Cliff, Long Island.

Died: 3/22/1902

Town Affiliation: Mineola

Notes:

After the war, Jerome returned to Mineola, New York, where he worked in a factory that

manufactured agricultural machinery. He moved to Paxton, Illinois in 1868, where he took up the

position of manager of a hemp and flax company.

On March 6, 1873, Jerome married 21-year old Jane “Jennie” A. Ostrom, of Paxton. Like Jerome,

Jenny had been born in New York. The Jeromes had one child, a boy, born 1874, who

46

apparently died young (or was institutionalized), as he appears in one census at age 6, but not in

future censuses.

In 1899, citing diabetes and heart problems, Jerome applied for a disability pension. By that time

he and Jennie were living in Springfield, Illinois, where he was working as a guide in the state

capital building. Jerome died from the complications of a gastric ulcer March 22, 1902 in

Springfield, Illinois.

Jerome was a renown chess player, and even has a move named after one of his: “The Jerome

Gambit.” It is unclear when he began playing chess, but throughout the 1870’s many of his

matches were reproduced in national chess journals.
