IM/MIGRATION: STATIONS OF THE CROSS In Lent 2012, Grace Commons, a house church in Chicago, curated 15 Stations of the Cross representing a series of significant moments in Jesus’ last day, contemplating each station through the lens of immigration and migration. Artists from several churches and other organizations participated in creating the art. This curation was exhibited at the 2016 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA and continues to be a topical issue for our country and our world today. Walking the Stations of the Cross, or “praying” them, is a traditional spiritual practice among Christians. It’s a practice that evolved so people anywhere could symbolically go on “pilgrimage” to the Holy Land and tap into the power of the location and the events that happened there. By entering the story of Jesus’ last day through art, we reflect on The Passion outside of the intellect. We involve our senses, our experience and our emotions. We invite you to take this self-guided walk in Fellowship Hall with your families, friends and neighbors as part of your spiritual journey this Lenten season.

Pastor’s Lenten Study—Begins Wednesday, March 8 In this time of reflection and preparation as we approach the holiest days of the Christian calendar, I invite you to an exploration of the Christian spiritual life. We will learn some basic language of spirituality and spiritual formation and try out time-tested spiritual practices. This time together is designed to help us find one or two spiritual disciplines that can become part of our daily discovery of God so that we might live deeper, more spiritually directed lives. This class will be offered for six weeks of Lent on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in the Library. For those interested, there is preparatory material so please let Marjorie know if you’re coming at [email protected].

Two days following the International World Day of Prayer on March 3, we’ll gather in Fellowship Hall to honor our common humanity as children of God, to learn about immigration practices in the U.S., and to celebrate our diversity. We’ll have fun sharing food from our own family cultures of our heritage. We’ll welcome and hear from our guests from Freedom House – Detroit (www.freedomhousedetroit.org). Bring a food from an area of the world that is part of your family heritage. Feel free to wear clothing styles common to your heritage.

Practicing Good Stewardship of Our Resources: Do You NEED Your Bulletin?? As the church staff and leadership examines ways in which we can be better stewards of our resources, we wonder how much people actually use their bulletins. All of the worship material in the bulletin is projected on the screens and the announcements are available on our website and in the email blast that Becky sends out each week. As we explore our actual usage of the printed bulletin, please help us by NOT taking a bulletin if indeed you don’t really use it during or after worship. Of course, if you want one, take one! We’ll be tracking actual usage over the course of the next several weeks to see if this may be a way we can reduce our printing costs while still meeting your needs. If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about this, we would love to hear from you! Send an email to [email protected] with your reaction.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Super Bowl Subs fundraiser for our
Mission Trip this summer to Cannon Falls, Minnesota. We were able to sell
about 85 subs and raise $900! This money will help make this trip more
affordable for our families and youth.

Spectrum Orchestra Concert—Friday, March 10 Starting in March, we are excited to announce that Spectrum Orchestra will make Northbrook its new home for rehearsals and concerts. Spectrum Orchestra is a community orchestra serving the greater Detroit Metro area. It was organized as a place where intermediate and advanced musicians could find a high-quality place to play challenging music, grow their skills, and be
proud of their ability to master and present great music. Their first concert at Northbrook will be Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, directed by Kevin Fitzgerald, on Friday March 10 at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available 45 minutes prior to performance. Please visit their website, www.SpectrumOrchestra.org, for more information about the orchestra and ticket pricing.

Presbytery of Detroit Hands-On Mission Opportunity—Saturday, March 18 The Presbyterian Men are hosting a Spring Service Project on Saturday, March 18 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Registration begins at 8:30am. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Our gathering place and base of operations will be Detroit Blight Busters in the Motor City Java House located at 17336 Lahser Road in Detroit just north of Grand River Avenue. Please park in the Redford Theater lot just up the street. There will be plenty to do for men and women with or without “construction” skills. We will work with Detroit Blight Busters to remove debris and damaged drywall from inside of a nearby building undergoing rehab. Our efforts will help another building be transformed from blight to new use. Rain or shine, come be a blessing to folks who care about their neighborhood and who appreciate our help. Fort Street Open Door—Thursday, March 30 Join us as we travel to Fort Street Open Door on Thursday, March 30. Volunteers will meet at the church parking lot for an 8:00 a.m. departure. The church van and/or carpooling will be available. We will likely gather for lunch and fellowship at a Detroit restaurant on the way home. SOS—May 28 to June 4 We will be hosting South Oakland County Shelter from May 28 to June 4. We need many helpers to host our guests from security, meal prep, drivers and entertainment. We also need monetary donations. Sign up sheets will be out in April. Contact Barb Stetson at (248)302 3033 or [email protected] with questions.
Empty Bowls Collection in 2017 For 2017, all of our Empty Bowls’ loose change and other contributions will go into the mission fund designated for South Oakland Shelter (S.O.S.). This will allow us to build up our source of funds for Northbrook’s hosting and/or support of S.O.S. Please contribute your loose change in the bowl on the nametag table in the main hallway or when you see it in the Narthex or Fellowship Hall. Larger amounts or checks made out to Northbrook with the notation for Empty Bowls on the memo line may be taken to the church office. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Mission Outing—Saturday, March 11 Join us for a Mission Committee Outing to view the Exhibit, We Don’t Want Them: Race and Housing in Metropolitan Detroit, 1900-1968. This exhibit was produced by the Race2Equity Project of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion. We will see it while it is being hosted at Cranbrook/Kingswood on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills. Our appointment time is at 1:00 p.m. After the exhibit, we can plan to go out for coffee and conversation in the area. Please sign up following worship services. On Monday, March 13, please join in at the next discussion of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. This book is a 1969 autobiography about the early years of American writer and poet Maya Angelou. It is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma.

We are ready for the first month of Spring. Chilly, windy, perhaps snow but warmth is on its way. Set your clocks ahead on March12th. The first day of Spring is March 20th, The Irish celebrate Saint Patrick's Day March 17th. Now, I chat about the Irish.
Over 70% of Irish are of the Catholic faith. Irish folk always have a saying, a poem, or a story to tell. They love to dance and drink stout whiskey. They have firm family ties and are loyal to their kin. They make great stew. Their folklore is abundant. Ireland is a great country to visit. They are warm, witty and loving most of the time.
When we have a "sing along" Irish songs are a favorite.
Irish folks seem to have a welcome sign inside of them and that sign flows into all they meet. If you have an Irish friend, you are blessed. It is then that you have the "luck of the Irish" also.

Thank you to Dorothy Warren, Winnie Davies-Hancock, Betsy Savage, Lauri Dailey, Kathy Bauhof and her neighbor, Michelle Leonard, and my neighbor, Janet Montgomery, and my friend, Heather, for volunteering at the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity National Day of Service at the Detroit Medical Center on February 25th. They worked in the book room as "shoppers" and "greeters" assisting community organizations in selecting books.
