Introduction The Northern Stateline Economy & Jobs Report provides a current snapshot of the regional economy and talent resources. The report covers the following key areas:
• Demographics • Industries • Occupations • Workforce Characteristics • Workforce Availability
The Northern Stateline Economy & Jobs Report covers the Northern Stateline Economic Development Region (EDR), which included the counties of Boone, Winnebago, Ogle and Stephenson. The EDR reflects a total population of 445,866 and a labor force of 228,602. The Manufacturing industry represents 24.5 of employment in the EDR; followed by Trade, Transportation, & Utilities at 21.8%; and Educational-Health Services at 17.8%. Information is also reported by the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), referring to Boone and Winnebago Counties, with a total population of 346,031 and labor force of 176,656. The Northern Stateline Economy & Jobs Report was designed:

Demographic ProfilePercent Value
In 2016, the population in the Northern Stateline Economic Development Region was 436,273, the Rockford MSA was 339,376, and Illinois was 12,801,539. From 2010 to 2015, the regional population declined by ‐13,628, ‐2.5 percent.
The region has a civilian labor force of 228,602 in 2015 with a participation rate of 65.3 percent. Of the individuals 25 and over in the Rockford MSA, 21.0 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher which compares to 32.2 percent in the Illinois.
The median household income in the Rockford MSA is $49,987 and the median house value is $121,100.

Industry Snapshot The largest sector in Rockford MSA, Illinois is Manufacturing, employing 30,285 workers. The
next‐largest sectors in the region are Trade, Transportation, & Utilities (26,885 workers) and
Educational‐Health Services (23,510). High location quotients (LQs) indicate sectors in which a
region has high concentrations of employment compared to the national average. The sectors
with the largest LQs in the region are Manufacturing (LQ = 2.19), Educational‐Health Services (LQ
= 1.13), Other Services (LQ = 1.08), and Trade, Transportation, & Utilities (LQ = 1.04).
Employment data are derived from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and imputed where necessary. Data is for the 1st Quarter 2017.
Sectors in Rockford MSA, Illinois with the highest average weekly wages are Financial Activities ($2,097), Manufacturing ($1,261), and Construction ($1,210). Regional sectors with the best job growth (or most moderate job losses) over the last 5 years are Manufacturing (+2,700, Leisure‐Hospitality (+1,800), and Professional‐Business Services (+900). Over the next 10 years, employment in local workforce area region is projected to expand by 11,110 jobs. The industry projected to have the fastest growing employment in the region is Educational‐Health Services with a +0.81% year‐over‐year rate of growth. The strongest forecast by number of jobs over this period is expected for Educational‐Health Services (40,486 jobs in 2024), Professional‐Business Services (19,752 jobs in 2024), and Leisure‐Hospitality (15,866 jobs in 2024).

As of 2017 Q1, total employment for Northern Stateline EDR was 178,300. Over the year star ng 2016 Q1,
employment decreased –1.5% in the region.
Unemployment Rate
The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Northern Stateline EDR was 4.8 % as of September 2017. The regional unemployment rate was higher than the na onal rate of 4.1 %. One year earlier, in Sep-tember 2016, the unemployment rate in Northern Stateline EDR was 6.3 %.
