Principal’s Report: Year 12 Our senior students are in the last days of formal education. I know that their teachers are all working hard to deliver the last lessons, all of which are designed to improve students' results. I have re-introduced the Principal Gotchas awarded to all who do extra essays or papers, the best way for students to revise! The draw at their assembly next week will win one student a free formal ticket!! Year 11 I have had the real pleasure of interviewing some of our outstanding students for the role of Leaders in 2017. Every one of them was impressive. While some are not naturally extrovert, all put themselves forward for this role, speaking to both staff and a large number of students, in separate forums. Most of the population CANNOT DO THAT!! All of these young adults did, and very well. I am proud to announce our 2017 LEADERSHIP TEAM 2017: Captains: Sharni Tonkin and Jonathon Foxhall Vice-Captains: Ella Bryant and Jake Dalli Leaders: Daniel Bennett, Paige Steele, Julia Ashburner and Viviane Neal. I look forward to working with them. I am also greatly appreciative of the back ground work by their fantastic Year Advisor, Mrs Lawson. Mrs Hewett Our Careers' Advisor is a dynamo!! She continues to draw services, courses, experts

into the school! Every student has had an experience in the last couple of weeks which has been organised by her. She is very aware of the needs of our students, and goes out of her way to help them. We are very lucky to have her. Dilkara We are into our third year of our House system, which came out of comments from some students who were applying for our Leadership team three years ago! This term, Dilkara has been successful, and will go out next week, on Monday, with their Deputy Principal, Mr Welham, and the rest of the happy Dilkara staff! We are very pleased with the impact of the implementation of the House system, one of a variety of structures designed to ensure that all students enjoy positive relationships at school. We have had a significant decrease in negative referrals, a huge increase in positive referrals, and many indications that our school is very positive in recent years, since the House system introduction. Tell Them From Me This survey, which all students and staff complete, is a HUGE driver of our policy and school direction. We make many decisions about how we manage the school from our reading of the results of this survey. It is very important that PARENTS and GUARDIANS also complete their survey! We really do want to know what you think about the education and experiences we provide, and we

  • can only get that from you! Check our Facebook page, or use the following link: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/f7n95 Be on time for school I know this is a perennial, but all students need to be here before 8.10am. If I am out the front of the school at the beginning of the day, I see late students get out of cars. This is very disappointing! Whatever they tell you, they must be here by the 8.10am bell. If you are late unavoidably they must have a note of explanation. Late students ADD to the office staff workload, INTERRUPT the first lesson and LOSE valuable class time themselves. Poor attendance is the most significant factor in poor student achievement. If they are not at school, what can we do?? If you get an attendance letter. Please treat it as serious...because it is! Building Work The refurbishment of the Administration building has commenced. As anyone who has visited the school will know, this has given us some challenges. It will certainly improve the usability of this area of the school, and hopefully make it look more inviting. We know we are lucky to have been selected for the upgrade. Holidays are almost here. I hope everyone enjoys a break from routine and the opportunity to do some fun things. I know I will! Yours in Public Education. Merrilyn Rowley Year 7 Report WOW! Term 3 has flown past so fast and to the credit of the vast majority of Year 7, you have been working hard and engaging with our school community as a whole. On Tuesday the 13th Year 7 participated in a Positive Behaviour for Learning activity in the hall and had a fantastic time. The focus of this was resilience and on behalf of all of Year 7 I would like to thank Mrs Pidgeon for organising the day and Ms Thornton and Mr Hutchinson for presenting on the day.

Please be aware of the construction work going on at the front of the school and please stay away from this area. Although we have had some warm days please ensure you are in the correct uniform. As we approach the last week of term we still have a lot of things happening in the school so please make sure you are getting to class on time and have all the correct equipment ready to work. I hope you all have a great holiday and come back for a positive Term 4. Mr Wilkinson Year 7 Advisor Year 8 Report We are nearly at the end of Term 3 and I am sure many people are exhausted after the many activities that have occurred over the past 9 weeks. I would like Year 8 to remember that our Year 12s will be finishing their studies next week and it would be appropriate to show them the respect they deserve on their final days. For Year 8, there is still a week of school, plus Term 4 to get through. This means you must have your equipment for lessons every day. If your exercise books are running out, you will need to buy new ones. There is still a lot of learning to be done in the upcoming months. Students must continue to be responsible for packing the correct books and equipment each day so they can participate properly in every lesson. Remember appropriate footwear for Tech classes and sport uniform for P.E. practical lessons. I know that there have been many Year 8 students achieving their Personal Best in a variety of subjects this term. We recently had a formal assembly to recognise the efforts and achievements of students. I was pleased to present Year Advisor Awards to: Sarah Holloway, Amy McHale, Joshua Kitley, Kimberley Hingston, Tyler Ireland, Amber Marshall, Montana Harris, Sammy Hodgkinson, Tiana King, Teah Faimanu, Joe Rippard, Jack Kroehnert, Anthony Berrios, Edward

  • Tapukalanga, Sunny Newman and Blake Smith. Well done to this well deserving group of students. On Tuesday of this week Miss Thornton conducted a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) lesson in the hall with all Year 8 students. This involved a number of fun activities and a serious look at the problems around social media. A number of Year 8 students have reported that they have had issues with other students on Facebook and other forms of social media. The PBL lesson aimed to help students work out their responsibilities in relation to interactions on social media and what to do if they feel uncomfortable with messages or photos they receive. I would remind parents/carers that it is wise to check how your student is using social media. Blocking those who make unwanted or inappropriate comments is an effective way of stopping cyber nuisances. Please be safe in the holidays and come back refreshed for Term 4. We will be looking closely at classroom achievement and behaviour in Term 4 so that classes can be compiled for next year. This is your opportunity to do your very best. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on 4390 0555 or [email protected] Mrs Davis Year 8 Advisor Year 9 Report We have approached the end of Term 3. It has been a very busy term and I would like to congratulate the majority of Year 9 on their improved behaviour. Please remember to continue to collect Classroom Commendations and bring 5 of them to the TAS Staffroom so I can award you with a Year Advisor Commendation. These are great for your CVs when seeking part-time work in the community. For those who are already working part-time, if work commitments are impeding on your ability

to complete assessment tasks, please see me for support. A reminder to the Year 9 students who have made their deposits for camp, full payment of the camp and school fees must be paid on or before the 14th of October 2016. All permission slips are required to be brought back to school as soon as possible. I would like to thank all the parents and carers for supporting the camp because I believe this experience will be a valuable one for your child. Sadly, some students are not bringing the required equipment to school to complete course work. Please assist your child with this to ensure they are not missing out on vital information and participation in classroom activities. Remember books can still be purchased through the school canteen. Remember to check out the Northlakes High School Facebook page. It has a lot of information available through it and updates on day to day activities that are running in the school. Mrs Pidgeon and I have recently interviewed a list of students with attendance below 85%. Please remember to call and speak to me if you are having concerns regarding your child’s attendance at school so we can work together to achieve better outcomes for your child. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Pidgeon for relieving in my position as Year Advisor for the past two weeks. She does a fantastic job supporting students. Parents and carers can contact me anytime at [email protected] or during school hours on 4390 0555. Mrs Bissaker Year 9 Advisor Year 10 Report Due to unforeseen circumstances there is no Year 10 report available at this time.

  • Year 11 Report Year 11 have almost finished their Preliminary HSC year as Term 3 draws to a close. Students have also completed their Preliminary examinations during Week 7 and 8 and should be congratulated for their efforts. Any student who has missed an examination is advised to see their subject teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements. If there are any subject concerns, students can also come and talk to me. Students must be resolving any outstanding N-warning notifications in their subjects, this is important to commence studying the HSC component of the course. It is important that Year 11 head into their final year of schooling with a motivated work ethic. This includes ensuring that attendance is kept over 85%. Term 4 is actually Term 1 for our year, and vital core concepts are taught in many subject areas. Students must ensure that they attend all classes and complete work required at home. Term 4 is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable skills and study methods for their subjects. I remind students to access their staff mentor for assistance with study skills and coping mechanisms for the HSC. The weather is getting warm – quite quickly! It is important that students wear appropriate summer uniform. This includes enclosed black shoes. I am finalising the design of the Year 12 jacket that our year will be wearing and will have an information letter out to you all next week. I aim to complete payments for our jackets by early 2017 in order for us to receive them in time for Term 2, 2017. We have now announced our Student Leaders for 2017! Captains: Sharni Tonkin and Jonathon Foxhall Vice-Captains: Ella Bryant and Jake Dalli Leaders: Daniel Bennett, Paige Steele, Julia Ashburner, Viviane Neal. I have been so impressed with the candidates who have been nominated and selected and cannot wait to assist them in their leadership roles next year.

As always, if there are any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me on 4390 0555. Mrs Lawson Year 11 Advisor Year 12 Report As we approach the end of this term and the end of formal schooling for our Year 12 cohort, we are excited by a few upcoming events. On Wednesday 21/09/16, we are holding our 'Fun Day' here at school. THIS IS IN NO WAY A 'MUCK-UP DAY' and poor behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated. This special day involves all Year 12 students participating in a fund-raising event of washing staff cars in the morning, followed by some activities at lunch-time and a teacher vs student soccer game in the afternoon. Year 12 students are permitted to attend in fancy dress to heighten the fun element of the day. Year 12 students have been clearly told that any pranks/ muck-up behaviour WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and consequences will be applied to any student that engages in any undesirable behaviours. On Thursday 22/09/16 we are holding the Year 12 Graduation Assembly in the school hall, commencing promptly at 9am. The ceremony should run for approximately 2 hours and will be a wonderful event where awards will be presented. We encourage as many family members to attend the event as possible to support our graduating students. All Year 12 students should be studying to some degree each day of the week at this point. The students have had many opportunities to develop study timetables with their mentor teachers, as well as all the study technique tips offered to the students through the AVID classes. Please ensure your son/daughter is clearing any outstanding N-Award warnings before the end of next week to ensure they qualify for the award of a HSC. Feel free to contact myself or the Deputy Principal Mr Welham if you have any concerns in this area.

  • Many Year 12 teachers are offering extra classes to help maximise HSC results and some teachers will be offering classes over the school holidays. The staff here at NHS are very committed to helping students achieve the best results possible and we are extremely lucky to have so many dedicated staff. A reminder that the Year 12 School Formal is being held on Friday 11/11/16 at Kooindah waters Golf Resort, commencing at 5:30pm for photographs and the formal dinner commencing at 6:30pm. All formal ticket payments should have now been finalised. Students are also required to pay all outstanding senior school fees before the end of term. Please contact the school on 4390 0555 to discuss any concerns. Ms Knight Year 12 Advisor Careers News This week Years 10, 11 and 12 attended the RoadSkill show hosted by the New South Wales Chamber of Businesses and Central Coast Traineeship and Apprenticeship. This proved to be a very informative day with the presenters passing on the knowledge and expectations of what Employers, Universities and RTO such as TAFE are looking for in the future.

Year 12 have commenced a crucial period in their schooling and study. Their formal assembly is being held next week and all parents, family members and carers are invited to attend. Their HSC starts on the 13th October and the last Examination is on the 4th of November, results

for the HSC are released on the 15th December. The weeks leading up to these exams are some of the hardest for our students. Parents please be aware that staff at Northlake’s are here to help your child up to and during their exams with any study/questions they may have. As a parent of a student who has been through the HSC period I can only offer my best wishes and hope that their dreams and future career goals come to fruition. On Thursday University of Technology of Sydney (UTS) were at Northlake’s High School presenting to around 100 female students from 7-12 on Career Choices at University. Degrees leading into Engineering, Technology, Science and Maths.

The girls were arranged into groups of 6, asked to plan and build a village that would float on water and accommodate families without sinking.

  • They were given a budget of $40.00 to buy their materials from the shop that the university had set up. The whole exercise was fun to watch and the girls were very competitive. The winning team built a very simple model from cardboard and straws that did not sink in the water and could hold 48 marbles (people). Well done teams! The Beauty course has finished for this term and our next course will start next term on the 2nd Monday back. We are looking at offering Beauty on Monday and if numbers increase either Aged Care, Fitness or Massage. Some of the staff were used as models for waxing and tinting of eyebrows and lashes and were very complimentary on how great the girls and boys were in the Beauty Salon. We also have photos of our Hairdressing TVET course running where parents and family members were used as models. This course has proved to be very popular in our school and the photos show how well the girls are working on their models. I would like to thank all the parent’s carers and family members for giving up their time to act as models for the students.

On Tuesday the 20th of September the Central Coast Traineeship and Apprenticeship visit the school and have a presentation for Year 10 on the workforce around the Central Coast. Parents please make sure that your child is at school for this presentation. If your child is thinking of leaving and wanting to obtain an apprenticeship or traineeship these are the people to talk to.

If you would like to discuss your child’s future pathway, please do not hesitate to call 4390 0555 and ask to speak to Ms Hewett. Ms Hewett Careers Adviser Volunteering at Salvation Army Community Luncheon Last week a few of our students were asked to help out at the Salvation Army Community Luncheon.

Brad, Jack and Grant didn’t think twice about offering to help out. The boys served lunch on the day; they also took the opportunity to explore services that the Salvation Army provide. Brad, Jack and Grant served around 85 people, many of the older generation commented on how it was nice to see the school students helping out. The workers at the Salvation Army thanked the boys and have asked us back on a regular basis. I was very proud of how the 3 boys interacted with everyone at the luncheon. Date: 22nd September 2016

    Venue: NHS School Hall

  • Wills Day - Friday 25 November 20168am - 6pmGosford Salvation Army120 - 140 Central Coast Highway, Erina

Most of us don’t think about it very much, but having a professionally prepared Will is

one of the best ways to make sure the people who matter to you are taken care of. And it

doesn’t have to be difficult or costly.

The Salvos offer a community service in which generous local solicitors prepare simple

Wills* in exchange for a $50 contribution to our community work. It’s a great way to make

sure you have a Will that reflects your wishes while allowing us to help people in crisis.

*Simple Will - the stated fee covers the cost of preparing a ‘simple’ Will; usually from one spouse to another

or from a parent to children. You can discuss your needs at the time of making your appointment.

There is no obligation at all to provide a bequest to The Salvation Army. If, after taking care of your loved

ones, you would like to support our services for the community, you are of course most welcome do so.

For a $50 contribution, we can help.
