Foundation Raises Funds, Generates Involvement, as Northside ISD Booms

Heralds Decade-and-a-Half of NEF2010

1

Key points about the year just finished saw ….nearly $1 Million raised….over $700,000 given away in grants or scholarships, and the ….endowment back to the $2.5M reached prior to 2008’s economic downturn….portfolio down 14% at the end of 2008 is back up 22.36% by Dec. 31, 2009 ....2009 included record donations from the NISD Employee Pledge Drive ($181,417) and record numbers of Employee Pledge Drive donors (6,988).

According to NEF President Garcia, “Although 28% of NEF funds come from businesses and community organizations, the 22% that is donated by School District employees shows the staff’s appreciation for the NEF and its Grants Program.”

Rene M. Garcia, President Director Building Division, Zachry Construction Corp.

Larry Ratcliff, President-elect Sr. VP-Chief Information Officer of Jefferson Bank

New President of NEF succeeding Rene M. Garcia in 2010 is Larry Ratcliff, senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Jeffer-son Bank. He is a 1979 graduate of NISD’s Jay High School and has three children, all of whom attend-ed school in Northside ISD.

NEF President Rene M. Garcia, Director of the Building Division of Zachry Construction Corporation, completed two years of service in the role of NEF President knowing that NEF had weathered the reces-sion. He inspired NEF to revise its policies to address any economic eventuality, and increased fundrais-ing as well as the number of grants awarded.

Although size is often relative in education, the sheer magnitude of growing numbers of students enrolling in Northside Indepen-dent School District – 91,578 in 2009 – requires help from a lot of employees (13,000-plus) and a lot of volunteers (20,000-plus). NISD looks to its alumni, commu-nity members and businesses to donate time, energy, expertise, and – in the case of Northside Education Foundation – funds - to support innovative instruction.

In 2009, the year just finished and herein reported, Northside Edu-cation Foundation (NEF) has been the School District’s premier part-nership. A non-profit public foun-dation (501c-3) #74-2591569, NEF is registered with the Inter-nal Revenue Service (IRS) and State of Texas, so donations by individuals and businesses can be claimed for tax exemption under the law.

Annual reports to donors are required by IRS, assuring transparency as well as much-deserved recognition for donors. The “more-the-merrier” Strategic Plan adopted by NEF Board members in 2009 invites unlimited participation by people who believe in quality public education as it is delivered in Northside ISD, located in northwest San Antonio, Texas, the city’s fastest-growing area. Northside is the 4th-largest school district in the Texas.

NEF Celebrates

$700,000 Whether awarded as a grant to buy educational materials for students or a leaf blower for the campus custodian, donations to Northside Education Foundation are converted to benefits on a competitive basis. Dozens of grants are applied for on-line four times a year, but there are currently sufficient funds to meet only 50% of requests. Grant cycles are divided into TEAM Grants (up to $10,000 for a campus or subject-specific educational program), Classroom Innovation (up to $1,000 twice a year for an innovative idea), or Mini-Grant (up to $500 for supplies.)

In 2009, NEF awarded…$294,158 to 329 NISD staff members as NEF Grants Program …$39,850 in scholarships to 56 students …$2,000 in scholarships to two teachers…$255,721 from other foundations to four NISD Programs…$111,620 to 18 Designated Funds in which the donor specifies how the money is to be distributed…$13,862 to 85 campuses as Six Flags Family Days Grants…$2,300 to 23 campuses for winning 100% participation in NEF Employee Pledge Drive

First Donation to NEF for 2010 came from Business: Red McCombs Toyota and McCombs Enterprises Partners in Education program. Check it out: www.redmcccombspie.com. Buy a car and McCombs will donate $100 to North-side Education Foundation. First Donation to NEF for 2010 by an individual was made by Frank Humada, whose 4th annual NEF donation funds three scholarships for Northside teachers to obtain advanced degrees and underwrites certification costs for more than 400 high school students enrolled in career/technology courses ranging from Microsoft Programming to Culinary Arts and Cosmetology. Guidestar.org is a popular website comparing various non-profits, which lists detailed information about NEF, as do state and na-tional databases that require tax filing and reporting by public, tax- exempt organizations.Low operating costNEF has the support of the NISD Board of Trustees and Administration, and does not have to expend its funds for staff salaries, office space, or tele-phone. The result is that less than 5 cents of every dollar donated is needed for operations, maxi-mizing NEF grants to fulfill the donor’s original intent.

Northside Education Foundation Gets Personal… Making a difference in the world, or in the lives of young people, may sound like a cliché but is the admirable goal of humans everywhere, and NEF paves the way smoothly. Whether you design your own program or simply make a donation in memory of someone who died, families in mourn-ing receiving news that a gift has been made on behalf of a loved one are everlastingly grateful. “To help a child,” says Sylvia Wade on the occasion of her mother’s passing at age 100, “with a gift in honor of my Mom-the-teacher, is just perfect.”

While it is true that donations to NEF are tax deductible, anyone who gives is making a selfless decision to choose public schools for their support….over a myriad of choices. Ask they why they give, and the responses are as varied as the individuals and their gifts: because I value my own education; the influence of a favorite teacher, so my own children can be successful, since they need my help, because who can resist the smiles of kids? A listing of donors to NEF during the time frame of this report (11/30/08 to 11/30/09) and exclusive of NISD Employee Pledge Drive donors) follows, with the im-mense gratitude of NEF and NISD.

Fiscal year for NEF is June 1 to May 31. To obtain a free copy of Official Audit and IRS 990 tax filing as of May 31, 2009, contact NEF Office, 210-397-8599, or email www.foundation.netor [email protected].

Morgan Escamilla, a 10th grade student from Taft HS, shows off her artwork that is now on the official Los Leones t-shirt. Morgan was the grand prize winner in the 2009 Los Leones Publicity Contest. Her piece was picked from a record number 268 total pieces of artwork submitted in the competition.

As it enters the second year of a 5-year Strategic Plan, copies are available on-line at www.foundation.net, NEF will expand its successful fundraising to outreach to parents and alumni, in addi-tion to the business commu-nity and Northside ISD em-ployees. Funding innovation in Northside’s 100 schools remains NEF’s priority.

How Can You Help?Gifts of time, energy, expertise, or money from people who love children and learning are wel-comed at Northside Independent School District and generally flow to NISD through NEF. To begin, at-tend a meeting (open to the pub-lic), join a committee, assist with a project, leave your contact infor-mation. You will become a Friend of the Foundation (FOF).…for free. Volunteers who seek to serve a 3-year term on NEF’s 27-member Board of Directors are encouraged to become an FOF for a period of time first. The thing about NEF, says NISD Partnerships Director and NEF Executive Director Bon-nie Ellison is, “It’s really fun!”
