Notes from Fr. John St. Kieran Catholic Church Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 14, 2018 Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you. — 1 Corinthians 6:19a T oday we celebrate the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is hard to believe that Christmas is finished and once again we begin winter Ordinary Time. In some ways it is a relief to get life back to normal after the holidays. But it can also seem depressing as well. All the decorations are packed away or on their way and the tree is history until next year. As wonderful as the Christmas holiday is, today we are reminded that most of our lives are lived in ordinary time. Most days aren’t that exciting and may seem routine, but there is a pattern to our lives, and it is nice to get back into the normal flow. It is the same for the church. The readings we hear now in church strengthen our faith in Jesus and the salvation he has brought us. They also push us to get on board and become his disciples. Today we celebrate for the first time in our temporary worship space, Crawford Hall. For many it was like going back to the good old days. For new- comers it was an adventure just finding out where mass was being celebrated. Thanks to everyone who helped on Monday setting up this new space. Thanks also to our sacristans who have helped make things move along smoothly so far. This is a work in progress. If we don’t always have what we need, we will get it for the next celebration. We should be back in the new space by Holy Week. Work began in the church this week with the demolition of the church bathrooms and removal of the old carpet. Please continue to pray for the success of the renovation and the safety of our workers. This week both school and religious education classes began. I think most of the children are glad to be back in school. It is a place to be with friends, learn and have a good time. For parents they can also get back into a routine and not worry about watching or entertaining their children twenty-four hours a day. We were glad to see them back as well. The children bring life to our parishes. Once again if you have children in Catholic Schools or are looking to enroll them in a private school, go online and check out the tax credit scholarships that will be offered through the state of Illinois. Many of you can qualify for them. If you have questions or don’t understand call Mr. Lungaro, the St. Agnes School principal or Karen Hamilton the school secretary. They will be able to offer some guidance. Their number is 756-2333. Thanks also to everyone who made our prayer for peace a success this past Wednesday. The Cardi- nal has been encouraging all people of the Archdio- cese to reach out and get to know other people from neighboring parishes. We have been working together with St. Ireneaus, and St. Agnes for a while now and it is nice when we can come together for a good cause like peace. Thanks to the choirs, instrumentalists and ministers who helped us with the evening. Thanks also to all of you who came and joined us for peace. We pray that the light that came into our lives at Christmas, Jesus Christ, will help us be advocates for peace in our homes, schools, workplaces, and neigh- borhoods. Another thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our Christmas celebrations so beautiful. This includes our choirs, instrumentalists, church decorators and all the ministers who work to make our liturgies run effortlessly. Finally, thanks to Joanne who coordinates all the liturgies and music. The last thank you is to everyone who gave so much financially to St. Agnes during the Christmas celebrations. The Christmas collection to date is $22,243. That is outstanding. Thank you. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Speak, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19). Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.

— 1 Corinthians 6:19a

T oday we celebrate the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is hard to believe that Christmas is finished and once again we begin winter Ordinary Time. In some ways it is a relief to get life back to normal after the holidays. But it can also seem

depressing as well. All the decorations are packed away or on their way and the tree is history until next year. January 7, 2018 St. Kieran Catholic Church 724 West 195th Street Chicago Heights, IL 60411 Dear Parishioners of St. Kieran Church: Our hearts are filled with enormous gratitude for all the ways in which you blessed the celebration of Christmas for our clients who frequent the St. Irenaeus Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Thank you to each of you who helped to make the season bright. Your participation in the Giving Tree project organized by the Outreach Committee yielded a huge success and the gifts were gratefully received. The toy collection organized by the Women’s Club brought many a happy smile to parents who were eager to provide Christmas surprises for their children. Your monthly food collection continues to be such a blessing for the ministry of the pantry. During the week before Christmas, we reached an all-time record of serving 174 households, so your generous contributions were ever so gratefully received. On behalf of all the clients and volunteers, we extend a very sincere word of thanks and a promise of our prayer. May you be richly blessed with good health, peace, and happiness throughout the New Year and always. Sincerely, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P. Food Pantry Director [email protected] 708-433-9615

Renovation Update from Sandy Vasek, Business Manager

This will be the first weekend that we will be celebrating, once again, our liturgies in Crawford Hall! We hope that all goes well and that there is not too much of a burden for anyone. We have tried to anticipate your needs and make arrangements for you ahead of time—but we realize that some things might have been forgotten. If you need something or have a question about anything, please feel free to talk to any Staff Member or call/visit the Rectory Office during normal business hours.

A few things that you need to be aware of in the coming weeks are outlined below: Votive Candles: Our familiar votive candle stands were not moved to the Crawford Hall location for a few reasons. First, they are solid brass and very difficult to move. Secondly, they do not belong to us—Monk’s Candles (from whom we purchase our votive candles,) graciously gave them to us to use if we would buy our candles from them. If they are damaged in any way during the move, this would become a liability issue. Lastly, the ceilings in the school building are, for the most part, lower than the church and/or have a sprinkler system installed in the ceilings. It is quite possible that the heat generated by the candles could engage the sprinkler system—which would be a disaster. We assure you that our candles will return when we move back into the church. Shrine Flowers: Ordering flowers in celebration of an event or in memory of a loved one has become very popular at St. Kieran and we thank you for participating in this event. We did not move any of our statues over to Crawford Hall, as you can see. They are, as we found out, very rare Carrera Marble (from Italy) and the last of their kind. We do not want to take a chance that they could be damaged in any way. We also paid to have them cleaned when the Holy Family Shrine was redone and would like to handle them as little as possible. In the inter-im period, we will be placing Shrine flowers by the statue of St. Anne and our Blessed Mother (as a child) that adorns our school vestibule. If this does not meet with your expectations and you have ordered flowers for any time during the next few months, please call the Rectory and let us know.

God Bless you all and let us make the most of our time away from our church; an early Lenten present, so to speak!
