Phase I – Nearly complete (Final Walk-through with Dan Keithly ??)

1. The  marina  underwent  a  modest  electrical  upgrade  in  May  2013.  The  work  was  bid  and  awarded  to  Keithly  Electric.  Projects  included:

2. Correct  deWiciencies  in  the  Marina  Load  Ground  including:a. Installing  #10  green  ground  wire  to  each  outlet  in  the  marinab. Repair  broken  conduit  (before  this  work  the  ground  was  connected  to  the

Service  Ground  using  the  aluminum.c. Install  new  service  Load  Ground  (head  of  dock  3).d. Install  new  Hubbell  plates  and  plugs  at  each  electrical  outlet

3. Modify  Slip  2-‐35  100Amp  Service  to  50Amp  service  with  new  50-‐amp  plug4. Install  now  connection  for  the  dock  Internet  service.  The  wiring  to  the  Internet

plugs  was  from  a  convenient  boat  plug;  this  presented  the  challenge  of  losing  power  to  the  internet  system  (surge  protector  and  back  up  battery)  whenever  a  moorage  holder  turned  off  the  service  breaker  prior  to  disconnecting  their  shore  power.

Phase II

a. Determine  the  role  of  the  MBYC  Dock  Electrical  Committee  and  formalize.i. Do  we  want  the  committee  to  do  work  on  the  new  junction  boxes  and

above  the  30  AMP  plugs.ii. Determine  exactly  what  they  are  evaluating  and  how  it  is  being  accom-‐

plished.iii. Do  boat  Galvanic  Isolators  and/or  Isolation  Transformers  affect  their

readings?iv. Do  we  want  the  dock  electrical  committee  members  changing  the    dock

lighting  bulbs?b. If  we  allow  members  to  work  on  the  system  are  we  invalidating  our  warranty

and  exposing  MBYC  to  liability  (real  or  implied)?c. If  boat  wiring  challenges  are  discovered,  how  will  we  assure  the  problem  is  re-‐

solved.d. Note:  Certain  types  of  Marine  Insurance  requires  a  survey  every  few  years.  Is

that  survey  adequate  to  assure  a  compliant  and  safe  electrical  system.e. Do  we  want  to  ask  the  Dock  Committee  and  BOT  to  require  a  survey  every  ___

years?f. Do  we  want  to  create  a  list  of  recommended  marine  electrical  surveyors?g. Do  we  want  to  create  a  list  of  recommended  marine  service  providers?

2. Plan  for  electrical  education  program:

Phase III Planning – Time Line ______________ (2018 – 2010 ???)

1. What  projects  are  we  serious  about  pursuing?2. Rewire  the  power  wires  through  out  the  marina.3. Install  marina  power  and  water  posts  at  the  outside  slips.4. R/R  replace  slip  meter  panels  –  new  meters  with  wireless  networking.5. R/R  distribution  panel6. Upgrade  dock  2  50  foot  slips  to  50  Amps  as  well  install  ____  50AMP  plugs  on  the

guest  dock.7. What  does  the  LRC  have  budgeted  for  this  project?8. ROM  cost  of  project  we  are  considering.9. How  will  the  club  manage  the  project?

Note to Jim and Lisa

Jim and Lisa,

Thank you for the MBYC Dock Captain recognition. I really didn’t serve my term and I’m not sure I deserve it. But it is appreciated.

I look forward to both of your leadership for the next two years. It was great to get to know you and work with you. I’ll be here to help in anyway I can.

Reflecting on the year, I think the way you jumped in and gave us the support to put the Slip 2-33 issue to bed was terrific. That weighed very heavy on Mark and me. Thank you!

Sincerely, Russ

Duties of a Dock Captain

1. The  Dock  Captains  are  expected  to  have  an  understanding  and  knowledge  of  the  Moorage  Rules  and  Regulations  and  By-‐Laws  of  MBYC  (ARTICLE  XVII  -‐  Moorage  Fa-‐cilities  are  of  particular  importance).

2. The  Dock  Captains  report  directly  to  the  Moorage  Chairman  (Rear  Commodore)  or  the  Dock  Captain  assigned  to  the  Chairman  duties  if  the  Chairman  is  not  available.

3. It  is  the  role  of  the  Dock  Committee  to  provide  continuity,  advice  and  counsel  to  the  Chairman.

4. Additionally,  the  Dock  Captains  will  be  available  to  assist  members  and  reciprocal  moorage  guests  by  answering  questions  on  daily  dock  operations  and  the  Moorage  Rules  and  Regulations.  They  will  assist  members  and  guests  in  any  way  appropriate.

5. The  Dock  Captains  will  monitor  and  be  mindful  of  the  moorage  assignments  and  wait  lists.  Their  goal  will  be  to  maximize  utilization  of  this  valuable  resource  in  ac-‐cordance  with  the  by-‐laws;  to  this  end,  they  will  consider  appropriate  slip  reassign-‐ments  to  assure  best  use  of  the  marina.  They  will  consult  with  the  Chairman  at  a  Dock  Meeting  to  determine  assignments  based  on  the  By-‐laws.  The  Chairman  is  ul-‐timately  responsible  for  assignment.

6. The  Dock  Captain  will  NOT  reprimand  or  correct  a  member  and/or  guest  unless  there  is  an  immediate  safety  issue.  The  Dock  Captain  will  quietly  notify  the  Chair-‐man  who  will  deal  with  the  member  if  and  when  appropriate.

7. The  Dock  Captain  will  assure  use  of  the  marina  is  by  authorized  users  only.  If  a  non-‐yacht  club  boat  attempts  to  use  the  marina  and  a  Dock  Captain  is  available,  the  Dock  Captain  will  politely  ask  them  to  leave  explaining  that  we  cannot  allow  non-‐members  to  use  the  facility  due  to  insurance  concerns.  Normal  marine  courtesies  to  vessels  in  harms  way  can  justify  granting  a  short  term  exception  (a  trip  to  the  store  or  restroom  is  NOT  “harms  way”).  If  challenged,  do  NOT  engage  –  CALL  911  and  the  Dock  Chairman.

8. Dock  Captains  are  NOT  authorized  to  grant  waivers  to  the  Moorage  Rules  and  Regu-‐lations  and  By-‐Laws  of  MBYC.  However,  if  a  situation  requires  immediate  resolution,  a  Dock  Captain  may  authorize  the  exception  but  the  length  of  time  will  be  made  clear  and  the  Chairman  will  be  immediately  notiWied.

1) Simcor – In a sense it is Zocor and Niaspana) Niaspan is slow release niacin.b) 2 Types of Niacinc) Immediate release - crystallined) Slow or extended release – Niaspane) Start with 250 to 500 mg

Notes

Page 18: Notes master

f) Other cholesterol lowering medications: Zocor, Lipitor, and Crestor.g) Zocor – if prescribed consider 40mg (80 too high given my total cholesterol).

2) Lipitora) Made by Pfizerb) Prescribed for highly elevated cholesterol and those with a heart conditionc) Generic available 11/30/11d) Atorvastatin made by Ranbaxy

3) Given total LDL is 126 and HDL is 60, consider going to a generic like Lovastatin (pravasta-tin) which is recommended to lower LDL by less than 30%.a) Note: Simvastatin is a generic designed to lower cholesterol by >30%.b) Proposal: Lovastatin 20mg and 1 500 mg extended release Niacin.c) Cholestyramine is also used to remove substances called bile acids from your body.

i) Taking Cholestyramine (4 grams once per day) to “stabilize” bowel after gall bladder removal with subsequent bile duct removal (?) due to stone in duct… Cholecystitis (ko-luh-sis-TIE-tis) is inflammation of the gallbladder. Aprox 2005 Dr. Mariann Johnson at Evergreen.

ii) Cholestyramine is a bile acid sequetrait.d) Generic Statins

i) Mevacorii) Pravachol

Blood Pressure Meds

1) Ace Inhibitor - Generics a) Benazeprilb) Enalaprillc) Lisinopril

2) Hzyaar (Lotramin) also has a diuretic…

3) Diovan (Recommended by Dr. Getchel)a) Angiotension Receptor Blockerb) Generic is Valsartan which should be available in 2012c) Diovan HCT has a diuretic

4) Hyzaar (Lotrimin HTZ) is also a Angiotension Receptor Blocker with a Diuetic

5) Why would we need to change to Diovan???

How is it used? There are two different tests for CRP. The standard test measures a much wider range of CRP levels but is less sensitive in the lower ranges. The hs-CRP test can more accurately detect lower concentrations of the protein (it is more sensitive), which makes it more useful than the CRP test in predicting a healthy person's risk for cardiovascular disease.hs-CRP is promoted by some as a test for determining the potential risk level for cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes. The current thinking is that hs-CRP can play a role in the evaluation process before one encounters one of these health problems. More clinical trials that involve measuring hs-CRP levels are currently underway in an effort to better understand its role in cardiovascular events and may eventually lead to guidelines on its use in screening and treat-ment decisions.^ Back to topWhen is it ordered?hs-CRP usually is ordered as one of several tests in a cardiovascular risk profile, often along with tests for cholesterol and triglycerides. Some experts say that the best way to predict risk is to combine a good marker for inflammation, like hs-CRP, along with the lipid profile.^ Back to topWhat does the test result mean?

People with higher hs-CRP values have the highest risk of cardiovascular disease, and those with lower values have less of a risk. Specifically, individuals who have hs-CRP results in the high end of the normal range have 1.5 to 4 times the risk of having a heart attack as those with hs-CRP values at the low end of the normal range.

The American Heart Association and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have de-fined risk groups as follows:Low risk: less than 1.0 mg/LAverage risk: 1.0 to 3.0 mg/LHigh risk: above 3.0 mg/L

These values are only a part of the total evaluation process for cardiovascular diseases. Additional risk factors to be considered are elevated levels of cholesterol, LDL-C, triglycerides, and glucose. In addition, smoking, having high blood pressure (hypertension), and being diabetic also increase the risk level.

Notes

Page 20: Notes master

Is there anything else I should know?Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ((NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen) or statins may reduce CRP levels in blood. Both anti-inflammatory drugs and statins may help to reduce the inflammation, thus reducing CRP.

Because the hs-CRP test can serve as a marker for inflammation, it is important that any person having this test be in a healthy state in order for the results to be of any value in predicting the risk of coronary disease or heart attack. Any recent illness, tissue injury, infection, or other gen-eral inflammation will raise the amount of CRP and give a falsely elevated estimate of risk.Women on hormone replacement therapy have been shown to have elevated hs-CRP levels, suggesting that this test may be useful in predicting future cardiovascular events.

Since the hs-CRP and CRP tests measure the same molecule, people with chronic in-flammation, such as those with arthritis, should not have hs-CRP levels measured. Their CRP levels will be very high due to the arthritis—often too high to be measured or meaningful using the hs-CRP test.

Lyrics: Forever Young (Bob Dylan)

May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come trueMay you always do for others And let others do for youMay you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rungMay you stay forever youngMay you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be trueMay you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding youMay you always be courageous Stand upright and be strongMay you stay forever young

May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swiftMay you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shiftMay your heart always be joyful And may your song always be sungMay you stay forever youngMay you stay forever young

Medicare Considerations

1) Medicare Advantage Plan has similarity to an HMO…. Additional costs could be incurred for out of network providers.

2) Medicare Part D coverage is the drug plan.

3) USAA: (800) 771-9960 for the Advice Centeri) “What are you inquiring about?”ii) “Medicare Supplement Insurance”iii) …. “Are you calling about Part D Drug Gap/Supplemental Coverage”.iv) “No”v) Note: You do NOT want to talk to a “partner company” (e.g., Humana)

4) 4 Medicare Parts:i) A – Hospitalizationii) B – Doctorsiii) C – Medicare Advantage Programs (Includes Part D coverage)iv) D – Drug program

5) The “Plans” define the Part A and B supplemental insurance or “medicare gap insurance”

6) Plan N costs apox $105 per month (Adjusted annually)i) There will be a “co-pay”ii) There will be a “Deductible”

7) Plan F costs aprox $180.71 per month (Adjusted annually)i) Generally no deductible and/or co-pay.

8) Note the Social Security Administration will charge you for your BASIC COVERAGE at a rate based on your income…

9) Medicare Part D – Aprox $40 to $50 per month (adjusted and SELECTED) annually.

Notes

Page 22: Notes master

10) If you select an advantage plan you may not be able to go back to a traditional Medicare Gap insur-ance program with Part D supplement

Life Insurance

1) Current Term Life Insurancei) 20 year Termii) Russ - $100,00iii) Jan - $75,000iv) Renewal but “spendy”

2) Whole Life or Universal Life – We can transistion from existing Term Life Policies to Whole or Uni-versal Live before our Term Policies expire in (aprox) 2013???

i) Can be purchased without medical.ii) Jan:

(a) Whole life: $75,000 = $278 per month(b) Universal: $253 per month(c) Universal: $50,000 = $173(d) Note: Jan’s rate is based on Standard Health analysis

iii) Russ(a) Whole life: $100,000 = $358 per month(b) Universal Life: $100,000 = 279.36(c) Universal Life: $75,000 = $253.99(d) Universal Life: $50,000 = $144.27(e) Note: Based on Preferred Health analysis (from Term Policy assessment)

Income Annunity

i) Can be used to cover costs of Long Term Care Insurance. Seems to be a better way rather than just paying for long term insurance. (Long Term Care and an Income Annunity can be provided by USAA.

ii) There are various options that will provide various options such as “Joint” or “Beneficiary” which will provide protection in the event of passing prior to the “break even” point. The goal is to return premium and cover cost of Long Term Care Insurance.

iii) End of Life Costs…

1. Political Thoughts: Is it not a bit hypocritical for the Obama administration to criticize the George Bush for allowing the interrogation and incarceration of prisoners but refusing to refusing to re-lease documents justifying the killing of American citizens or her adversaries. Apparently, today, there is a sub-committee of the NSC at the White House that must approve the killing of an American citizen as enemy of the US in a time of war. For non-US citizens the approval process is at a lower level.

Normal operating configuration of the system. Failure of any single computer does not affect normal law. Covers 3-axis control, flight envelope protection, and load alleviation. Has 3 modes ac-cording to phase of flight.

GroundMode

• Active when aircraft is on the ground.

• Direct proportional relationship between the sidestick deflection and deflec-tion of the flight controls.

• Is active until shortly after liftoff.

• After touchdown, ground mode is reactivated and resets the stabilizer trim to zero.

FlightMode

• Becomes active shortly after takeoff and remains active until shortly before touchdown.

• Sidestick deflection and load factor imposed on the aircraft are directly pro-portional, regardless of airspeed.

• With sidestick neutral and wings level, system maintains a 1 g load in pitch.

• No requirement to change pitch trim for changes in airspeed, configuration, or bank up to 33 degrees.

• At full aft/fwd sidestick deflection system maintains maximum load factor for flap position.

• Sidestick roll input commands a roll rate request.

• Roll rate is independent of airspeed.

• A given sidestick deflection always results in the same roll rate response.

• Turn coordination and yaw damping are computed by the ELACs and trans-mitted to the FACs.

• No rudder pedal feedback for the yaw damping and turn coordination func-tions.

FlareMode

• Transition to flare mode occurs at 50' RA during landing.

• System memorizes pitch attitude at 50' and begins to progressively reduce pitch, forcing pilot to flare the aircraft

• In the event of a go-around, transition to flight mode occurs again at 50' RA.

Notes

Page 27: Notes master

Protections

Load factor Limitation • Prevents pilot from overstressing the aircraft even if full sidestick deflections

are applied.

Attitude Protection

• Pitch limited to 30 deg up, 15 deg down, and 67 deg of bank.

• These limits are indicated by green = signs on the PFD.

• Bank angles in excess of 33 deg require constant sidestick input.

• If input is released the aircraft returns to and maintains 33 deg of bank.

High Angle of Attack Protection (alpha):

• When alpha exceeds alpha prot, elevator control switches to alpha protection mode in which angle of attack is proportional to sidestick deflection.

• Alpha max will not be exceeded even if the pilot applies full aft deflection

High Speed Protection:

• Prevents exceeding VMO or MMO by introducing a pitch up load factor demand.

• The pilot can NOT override the pitch up command.

Low Energy Warning:

• Available in CONF 2,3, or FULL between 100' and 2,000' RA when TOGA not selected.

• Produces aural "SPEED SPEED SPEED" when change in flight path alone is insufficient to regain a positive flight path (Thrust must be increased).

ALTERNATE LAWALTERNATE LAWIf Multiple Failures of Redundant Systems occur, the flight controls revert to Alternate

Law. The ECAM displays the message: ALTN LAW: PROT LOST

If Multiple Failures of Redundant Systems occur, the flight controls revert to Alternate Law.

The ECAM displays the message: ALTN LAW: PROT LOSTGroundMode The ground mode is identical to Normal Law.

FlightMode

• In pitch alternate law the flight mode is a load factor demand law similar to the Normal Law flight mode, with reduced protections.

• Pitch alternate law degrades to pitch direct law when the landing gear is ex-tended to provide feel for flare and landing, since there is no flare mode when pitch normal law is lost.

• Automatic pitch trim and yaw damping (with limited authority) is available.

• Turn coordination is lost.

• When pitch law degrades from normal law, roll degrades to Direct Law - roll rate depends on airspeed.

Protections

• All protections except for load factor maneuvering protection are lost.

• The load factor limitation is similar to to that under Normal Law.

• Amber XX's replace the green = attitude limits on the PFD.

• A low speed stability function replaces the normal angle-of-attack protection o System introduces a progressive nose down command which at-

tempts to prevent the speed from decaying further.

o This command CAN be overridden by sidestick input.

o The airplane CAN be stalled in Alternate Law.

o An audio stall warning consisting of "crickets" and a "STALL" aural message is activated.

o The Alpha Floor function is inoperative.

• The PFD airspeed scale is modified: o VLS remains displayed

o VALPHA PROT and VALPHA MAX are removed

o They are replaced by a red and black barber pole, the top indicating the stall warning speed VSW

• A nose up command is introduced any time the airplane exceeds VMO/MMO to keep the speed from increasing further, which CAN be overridden by the sidestick.

• Bank angle protection is lost.

• Certain failures cause the system to revert to Alternate Law without speed stability.

• Yaw damping is lost if the fault is a triple ADR failure.

Notes

Page 29: Notes master

ABNORMAL ALTERNATE LAWAbnormal Alternate Law is activated if the airplane enters an unusual attitude, allowing recovery from the unusual attitude.

• Pitch law becomes Alternate (without autotrim or protection other than Load Factor pro-

tection).

• Roll law becomes Direct law with mechanical yaw control.

• After recovery from the unusual attitude, the following laws are active for the remainder

of the flight: o Pitch: Alternate law without protections and with autotrim.

o Roll: Direct law

o Yaw: Alternate law

• There is no reversion to Direct law when the landing gear is extended.

DIRECT LAWDirect law is the lowest level of computer flight control and occurs with certain multiple

failures.

• Pilot control inputs are transmitted unmodified to the control surfaces, providing a direct

relationship between sidestick and control surface.

• Control sensitivity depends on airspeed and NO autotrimming is available.

• An amber message USE MAN PITCH TRIM appears on the PFD.

• If the flight controls degrade to Alternate Law, Direct Law automatically becomes active when the landing gear is extended if no autopilots are engaged. If an autopilot is en-gaged, the airplane will remain in Alternate Law until the autopilot is disconnected.

• There are no protections provided in Direct Law, however overspeed and stall aural warn-ings are provided.

• The PFD airspeed scale remains the same as in Alternate Law.

MECHANICAL BACKUPIn case of a complete loss of electrical flight control signals, the aircraft can be tempo-rarily controlled by mechanical mode.

• Pitch control is achieved through the horizontal stabilizer by using the manual trim wheel.

• Lateral control is accomplished using the rudder pedals.

• Both controls require hydraulic power.

• A red MAN PITCH TRIM ONLY warning appears on the PFD.

How Great thou ArtI Love You Lord

Yes, there is a boating App for that!

iPhones, iPads, Android’s, smart phones and tablets are everywhere-so why not use them on your boat as a back up, or even primary system, as I do?One of my favorite boating Apps for the 3 platforms named is Navionics. At $14.99 for phone and $34.99 for the HD tablet version, it’s an amazing value. It provides complete coverage of USA (including AK & HI) and all of Canada. USA alone is $9.99.The App resides on the iPhone/Pad, so you don’t need to be in cell range or have access to WiFi. Your iPhone/Pad must have the built-in GPS, which most do.You can plan dozens of routes with waypoints (99 total) from your favorite chair; check tides, currents by time & location. Its all touch screen, there are no complex set ups to master.Navionics will record your track, departure time, ETA, GPH, average speed, es- timated fuel used etc. You can set a safety depth, add a Google Earth or Bing overlay. It can zoom in to your intended slip at any marina and the resolution is excellent.Touching any point on the chart will give you an instant Lat & Long for that point. Touch the GPS key on the display and it will give you your instant boat position at that moment, great in an emergency. You can add your own notes to the chart. E.G., many of us know about Zachary rock, close to Money Maker Rock, just off the end of C dock in Ganges. But, its not on all charts, so put it on yours! It lists all Marina’s; pub’s with phone numbers etc, the list goes on. Sorry to sound like an ad, but all this for $15.00!Those of you that don’t have AIS and I’m one, there is a free App, Ship Finder Free. SFF will give you the location of all AIS equipped vessels. Type of vessel, (ferry, tug, oiler, Victoria Clipper etc) its name and heading. It will not give others your position like a true AIS, but if you are in fog, wondering if a tug & tow or state ferry is heading your way-SFF will tell you.Boating Suite is an electronic log book App. With the log book section you can add departure time, exact location, engine hours, air temp, water temp, weather, wind, crew etc. There’s a fuel log section that will provide a summary of dollars you spent, GPH, HPG, average fill, average cost etc. Boating Suite, also includes, expense log, to do list, maintenance log and shopping list. You could waste the whole day at the dock, filling outall the information! You can even add photos of your trip to the log. Gone Boating allows you to email a float plan, similar to MBYC’sCruise Control. Anchor Watch App is now available for iPhone/Pad, although Ihaven’t used it in the real world; it’s very simple, loud and has a great phone call option all for $0.99.Captain [email protected]

MAC GPS This USB Gps uses a very powerful GPS module, and I'm using it for marine navigation through a laptop. Fast, with all the required NMEA sentences to please the navigation software I use. It has WAAS detec-tion so position is very accurate, and power consumption is really amazingly minimal: Feed the USB port, so no battery to replace, and perfectly waterproof... an small!. Satellites acquisition is very fast, and it fact it beats in all domains my $300 active GPS module from Raymarine expensive chart plotter!. Since the NMEA protocol requires a serial com port protocol, a simple driver(USB to serial converter, provided) has to be installed, and that is easily done. A few drawbacks: 1- Speed is limited to 4800 bps, good enough for NMEA 183, but some navigation softwares may work only with higher speed interface. 2- The NMEA sentences are limited and things like XTE(Cross track error used by autopilots) may not be avalable. In fact the GPS engine (chip)is already capable of everything, but how to access and configure it? . Simply said, the documentation is realy minimalist!. That is the only real drawback. But in conclu-sion, it does the job, is precise, fast, inexpensive and very reliable...
