IOWA CORN CY-HAWK TROPHY - - Iowa Corn is the sponsor of the Cy-Hawk Series, including the annual football game between the two schools. Iowa and ISU have played for the Cy-Hawk Trophy from the me the series resumed in 1977, with the Hawkeyes holding a 25-14 advantage in those games. Saturday’s game is the third event in the 13th annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa and Iowa State meet in soccer and volley- ball Friday in Ames. ISU leads the allme Cy-Hawk Series, 6-5-1. Ma Campbell (35-16) is in his first season at Iowa State and his fiſth season as a college head coach. The Hawkeyes have won eight straight home games, the fi h-longest ac ve streak in the country (FSU, 21; Clemson, 16; TCU, 14; Michigan State, 9; Iowa, 8). Iowa has also won 13 straight regular season games.

The Hawkeyes will defend fi ve trophies in 2016, star ng Saturday with the Cy-Hawk Trophy. The championship trophy defense includes the Big Ten West Division championship trophy, Cy-Hawk, Heartland (Wisconsin), Floyd of Rose dale (Minnesota), and Heroes (Nebraska).

The visi ng team has won the last four mee ngs in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Senior QB C.J. Beathard is 14-2 as Iowa’s star ng quarterback, 14-0 in the regular season, and 8-0 at Kinnick Stadium.

Senior DB Desmond King, the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award winner and consensus All-Amer-ican, is listed on six preseason fi rst-team All-America teams. He leads the B1G in punt (15.0) and kickoff return (35.0) average.

Iowa and Iowa State are playing under the lights at Kinnick Stadium for the second me. Iowa State defeated Iowa, 36-31, in 2002. Saturday’s game is the 13th night game in Kin-nick Stadium history. Iowa is 8-4 in those games.

The University of Iowa has produced more ac ve FBS head coaches than any other school. They include Bret Bielema (Arkansas), Bobby Diaco (UCONN), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), and Mark Stoops (Kentucky)

The Hawkeyes +3 turnover margin es for the Big Ten lead. Iowa forced and recovered three fumbles in the season opener, turning each turnover gained into a touchdown.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has two of his three sons involved in the Iowa program again in 2016. Brian, a former Hawkeye le erman and captain (2003-05), is in his fi h season as Iowa’s off ensive line coach and second year as running-game coordinator. Steven is an off ensive lineman who is in his fi h season as a redshirt senior. James Ferentz was a three-year starter on the Hawkeye off ensive line and a team captain before gradua ng in 2013. Kirk and Steven are one of seven father-son head coach-player duos in FBS. The others include Mike and Jay Macintyre (Colorado), Mark and Gunner Hudspeth (UL-Lafaye e), Rick and Brent Stocks ll (Middle Tennessee), Bobby and Derek Wilder (Old Dominion), Butch and Alex Jones (Tennessee), and Kyle and Alex Whi ngham (Utah).

FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS Iowa has nine players on its 2016 roster whose father played for the Hawkeyes. WR Brandon Bishop (Willie in 1986), QB Drew Cook (Marv in 1985-88), OL Cole Croston (Dave in 1984-86), OL Mitch Keppy (Myron in 1986-87), LS Tyler Kluver (Todd in 1986-87), TE George Ki le (Bruce in 1977-80), DE Anthony Nelson (Jeff in 1990-92), TE Peter Pekar (Jim in 1980-81), and QB Ryan Schmidt (Rick 1984-85).

BACK ON CAMPUS Head Coach Kirk Ferentz has four former players on the 2016 staff . His son, Brian Ferentz, was a three-year le erman from 2003-05 and is in his fi h year as Iowa’s off ensive line coach. He is also Iowa’s run game coordinator. LeVar Woods, a three-year le erman from 1998-2000, is in his ninth year on the Iowa staff . He is in his second season coaching ght ends a er coaching linebackers for three seasons. He also assists with special teams. Woods rejoined the program as an administra ve assistant in 2008. Kelvin Bell joined the Iowa program as a defensive lineman in 2000, but had his career cut short due to injury. He returned to the program as a graduate assistant and recently served as director of on-campus recrui ng (2012-13) before being named recrui ng coordinator and defensive assistant coach in February, 2016. Broderick Binns, a four-year le erman from 2008-11, was named director of player development in April, 2016. Binns previously served as a graduate assistant in 2014 and 2015, working with the Hawkeye special teams.

HAWKEYE HISTORY Iowa has played 1,208 games since beginning football in 1889. Iowa’s overall record is 626-543-39 (.533). That includes a 394-213-16 (.641) record in home games, a 232-330-23 (.413) record in games away from Iowa City, a 314-366-25 (.457) mark in Big Ten games and a 277-177-15 (.600) record in Kinnick Stadium.

Kirk Ferentz (pronounced FAIR-rintz, rhymes with parents) is in his 18th season as head football coach at Iowa and the dean of Big Ten Conference football coaches. His contract runs through the 2020 season. • Named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the

fourth me in his career (2002, 2004, 2009, 2015). Only Michigan’s Bo Schem-bechler (6) has more conference coach of the year awards.

• Guided Iowa to Big Ten tles in 2002 and 2004, and the Big Ten West Division tle in 2015.

• Named Woody Hayes, Eddie Robinson, and Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year. Was a fi nalist for the Maxwell Football Club, Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year award.

• Ferentz is eighth with 127 overall wins as a member of the Big Ten Conference. He has 76 Big Ten wins, tying for seventh all- me.

• Named the 2002 Associated Press and Walter Camp Na onal Coach of the Year and AFCA Regional Coach of the Year.

• Iowa has made two BCS bowl appearances, including a 24-14 win in the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl, and one CFP Bowl (2016).

• Iowa has played in nine January bowl games with four January bowl victories (2004 Outback Bowl, 2005 Capital One Bowl, 2009 Outback Bowl and 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl).

• Iowa has posted a 119-66 (.643) overall mark and a 72-46 (.610) Big Ten record since 2001. Ferentz has placed in the top one-half of the conference 10 mes, including Big Ten tles in 2002 and 2004, a second-place fi nish in 2009, and a West Division tle in 2015.

• At Iowa, Ferentz holds an overall record of 128-87 (.595) and a 76-60 (.559) mark in Big Ten games. In his 21st season as a college head coach, he holds a career mark of 140-108 (.565). He had an overall record of 12-21 at Maine from 1990-92.

The Cy-Hawk Series is in its 13th season in 2016-17, being sponsored for the sixth me by Iowa Corn.

Iowa State leads the all- me series, 6-5-1. Last year’s Cy-Hawk Series ended in a e, with both school’s earning 12 points.

Iowa captured the inaugural Cy-Hawk Series in 2004-05 (13-8), and won again in 2006-07 (13-8), 2008-09 (21-4), 2010-11 (15-11), and 2012-13 (17-9).

Iowa State won the compe on in 2005-06 (13-8), 2007-08 (18-9), 2009-10 (16-11), 2011-12 (17-11), 2013-14 (14-11), and 2014-15 (15-11).

The series awards two points (except football, which is worth three) to the winning school in each head-to-head match-up between the two ins tu ons. Addi onally, one point is awarded to an ins tu on if the gradua on rate of its student-athletes is greater than the na onal average as reported each fall by the NCAA.

A commemora ve Cy-Hawk Series Cup, which stands 31 inches tall and weighs 19 pounds, is displayed on the winning team’s campus for an en re year a er a victory. Replica cups are also presented as “traveling trophies” for individual victorious teams in the head-to-head compe on.

LAST MEETING – Sept. 12, 2015 (Ames, Iowa) Iowa scored 21 unanswered second-half points to record a 31-17 come-from-behind road victory over Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium and reclaim possession of the Cy-Hawk Trophy. The Hawkeyes were led offensively by QB C.J. Beathard, RB Jordan Canzeri, and WR Ma VandeBerg. Canzeri rushed a career-high 24 mes for 124 yards and a TD. VandeBerg posted career highs in recep ons (9) and receiving yards (114), while also scoring a TD. Beathard rushed 10 mes for 77 yards, including a career-long rush of 57 yards, while also comple ng 15-of-25 passes for 215 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. Beathard’s eff orts earned the junior signal caller Manning Quarterback of the Week and Co-Big Ten Off ensive Player of the Week honors. A er each team posted a fi eld goal in the fi rst quarter, the Cyclones grabbed a 10-3 advantage with an 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Sam Richardson to Quenton Bundrage. The Hawkeyes evened the score two possessions later with a 14-yard WR Tevaun Smith scoring recep on to culminate a 93-yard drive. Iowa State took a 17-10 lead into hal ime a er a 29-yard scoring recep on by Jauan Wesley. The Hawkeyes controlled the second half, scoring three touchdowns and allowing Iowa State only 66 total yards on 31 plays. VandeBerg recovered a TE Henry Krieger-Coble fumble on Iowa State’s 3-yard line and crossed the goal line to e the game in the third quarter. Riley McCarron then scored the game-winning TD, the fi rst score of his career, on a 25-yard pass from Beathard in the back corner of the end zone with 2:14 remaining in the contest. Canzeri tallied Iowa’s fi nal score on an 8-yard scamper following Desmond King’s fi rst intercep on of the season. Iowa’s defense collected six tackles for loss, including four sacks by four diff erent players. The Hawkeyes limited the Cyclones to 63 yards rushing on 27 a empts (2.3 avg.). DE Nate Meier and LB Josey Jewell each registered seven tackles. In addi on to the intercep on, King had fi ve tackles. Iowa’s DE Drew O and RB LeShun Daniels le the game in the fi rst and second quarters, respec vely, and did not return due to injury.

AFCA COACHES’ TROPHY IS ON CAMPUS The AFCA Coaches’ Trophy, presented by Amway, the Symbol of Supremacy in College Football, is on the University of Iowa campus for the Hawkeyes’ home game against rival Iowa State University. Iowa is the second stop of a ten-city tour during this college football season, during which fans will have the opportunity to see and take photos with the Trophy. The Trophy will be in the area star ng on Friday morning, for placement in live shots, morning shows and taped segments. A spokesperson is available to answer ques ons and discuss the Trophy Tour & Amway Coaches Poll. NELSON NAMED BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK DE Anthony Nelson was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in Iowa’s 45-21 season-opening win over Miami, Ohio. Nelson forced two Miami fumbles in his fi rst career game, with both leading to Iowa touchdowns. He recorded 2.5 sacks for minus 16 yards, and had yet another sack nullifi ed by a Miami delay of game penalty. Nelson was credited with two solo tackles, four assists and one pass breakup. Nelson’s fi rst caused turnover came in the fi rst quarter as Miami had reached the Hawkeye eight-yard line. Ma Nelson recovered the fumble and the Hawkeye off ense traveled 81 yards in two plays for a touchdown and a 21-0 advantage. Nelson’s second forced fumble came late in the game and led to Iowa’s fi nal touchdown in the closing minutes. The Big Ten honor is the fi rst for Nelson and the fi rst for the Hawkeyes this year. Iowa players earned weekly honors from the Big Ten on six occasions in 2015, including DE Parker Hesse, who earned Freshman of The Week honors in the regular season fi nale at Nebraska, a 28-20 Hawkeye win.

4 TO BE ADDED TO KINNICK MEDIA WALL OF FAME Four members of the media, who covered University of Iowa athle cs over the past 40 years, will be inducted into the Kinnick Stadium Media Wall of Fame on Sept. 16-17, in conjunc on with Iowa’s home football contest against North Dakota State. The inductees are Rick Brown, a member of the Des Moines Register sports staff from 1978-2015; Blean Calkins, who covered Iowa games for KWPC radio in Musca ne (1962-92); Hal Lagerstrom, sportswriter and sports editor at the Dubuque Telegraph Herald (1959-1991); and Ed Podolak, current radio analyst for Iowa football games for Learfi eld Sports. Calkins and Lagerstrom are being honored posthumously. The inaugural class of 20 members was recognized in 2006, the fi rst year the Paul Brechler Press Box was in use following the Kinnick Stadium renova on. Four addi onal members were added in 2011. The Wall of Fame, located in the media sec on of the press box, recognizes individuals who have covered Hawkeye football with integrity, accuracy and fairness over a long period of me.

HOME GROWN HAWKEYES Iowa’s roster of 117 players includes 53 players from Iowa. The roster includes 18 players from Illinois; seven from Michigan, six from Maryland, fi ve from Missouri and Texas, four from Wisconsin, three from Ohio and South Dakota, two from Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, and New Jersey, and one from Canada, Indiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

BAND OF BROTHERS The Hawkeyes have fi ve sets of brothers on the 2016 roster. In the season opener against Miami (Ohio), C James Daniels and RB LeShun Daniels became the fi rst Hawkeye brothers to start in the same game since SS Kent Ellis and CB Kevin Ellis in 1980. No other school in the country has more sets of brothers than Iowa. OL Ryan Ward and younger brother OLB Kevin return for their fourth and fi nal season together. Twins OL Landan and Levi Paulsen are back a er redshir ng their freshman year in 2015. They are the sixth set of twins to play football at the University of Iowa. LB Ben Niemann welcomes younger brother LB Nick Niemann to the team this year, as does SS Miles Taylor, whose younger brother LB Kyle is in his fi rst year on campus.

MORE THAN ONE Seventeen high schools have contributed more than one player to the current Iowa football roster. GLANCE AT THE SCHEDULE The Hawkeyes open 2016 with three straight home games against Miami, Ohio (Sept, 3), Iowa State (Sept. 10), and North Dakota State (Sept. 17). NATION’S TOP DEFENSIVE BACK RETURNS FOR SENIOR SEASON DB Desmond King, the Jim Thorpe Award winner and unanimous consensus All-American, announced on Jan. 4 he would return to Iowa for his senior season. King led the Big Ten and ranked second in the country with eight intercep ons, tying a school record. He was named the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Conference Defensive Back of the Year and a fi nalist for Walter Camp Player of the Year. FERENTZ CAPTURES NATIONAL AWARDS SEASON Head coach Kirk Ferentz returns to the Iowa sideline for an 18th season as the reigning na onal coach of the year. Ferentz was named Woody Hayes Coach of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, the Eddie Robinson Na onal Coach of the Year by the FWAA, and winner of the 2015 Dodd Trophy presented annually by the Chick-fi l-A Peach Bowl. He was named American Football Coaches Associa on Region 3 Coach of the Year, and was a fi nalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year and George Munger Coach of the Year awards. FERENTZ TOPS IN LONGEVITY Kirk Ferentz is in his 18th season as Iowa’s head football coach. He is ed with Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops as the longest ac ve FBS head coaches. Ferentz was named Iowa head coach on Dec. 2, 1998, one day a er Stoops was named head coach at Oklahoma. Stoops was a Hawkeye le erman from 1979-82.

IOWA AT THE HEAD OF CLASS IN COACHING LANDSCAPE The University of Iowa has produced four ac ve FBS head coaches, ed with Alabama for most in the country. Bret Bielema (Arkansas), Bob Diaco (UCONN), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), and Mark Stoops (Kentucky) all earned undergraduate degrees from the University of Iowa. Bielema, Diaco, Bob Stoops, and Mark Stoops played for former UI head coach Hayden Fry. All four head coaches served as assistants under Fry. Bielema was an assistant coach on Kirk Ferentz’s staff from 1999-2001.

ALL ABOARD TO KINNICK STADIUM! The Hawkeye Express, the passenger train that transports fans from Coralville to Kinnick Stadium, is once again available for fans traveling to Kinnick Stadium on Iowa Football game days. The Hawkeye Express is in its 13th season. Adults can ride the train for $12, round trip, while children (12-and-under) ride for free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the UI Ticket Offi ce or on game day at the Hawkeye Express depot located near the boarding ramp. Media creden als are accepted as well. The trip to Kinnick Stadium is approximately 10 minutes. Free parking is located in lots near the Comfort Suites and Coral Ridge Mall. Fans can begin boarding the train three hours prior to 11 a.m. kickoff s, and four hours prior to the start of a ernoon and night games. Return trips begin at the start of the fourth period and run 90 minutes a er the game. The Hawkeye Express is owned by the Iowa Northern Railway Company and operates on the Iowa Interstate Railroad.

seasons. • Iowa played in the Big Ten tle game for the fi rst me in program

history on Dec. 5, 2015. Iowa earned Big Ten Conference champi-onships in 2002 and 2004 and placed second in 2009. Iowa (8-0, 2002; 8-0, 2015) is one of three Big Ten teams to post a perfect mark in conference play since 1998 (BCS era), joining Michigan State (1) and Ohio State (5).

• Iowa has ranked in the top 10 in the fi nal Associated Press and CNN/USA Today coaches polls fi ve mes since 2002, including a ranking of seventh in both polls at the conclusion of the 2009 sea-son. • Part of the Hawkeyes’ long term success is due to the stability in the program. Iowa has had just two head coaches since 1979. Hayden Fry took over prior to the 1979 season and coached through the 1998 season, pos ng a record of 143-89-6. Current coach Kirk Ferentz replaced Fry, leading the program for the 18th season. IOWA FOOTBALL AND THE NFL • Since 1999, Kirk Ferentz’s fi rst year as head coach, 120 former

Hawkeyes have played in the NFL.• At least one Iowa Hawkeye has been selected in every NFL Dra

since 1978.• Since 2010, Iowa has had 26 players dra ed in the NFL. Among Big

Ten teams, only Ohio State has had more dra picks in that same me span (39). Nebraska and Penn State have also had 26 players

dra ed since 2010. • Iowa has had four fi rst round picks in the last seven NFL dra s -- OL

Bryan Bulaga, 2010; DE Adrian Clayborn, 2011; OL Riley Reiff , 2012; OL Brandon Scherff , 2015. Only Ohio State (7) and Wisconsin (5) have more among Big Ten schools.

• Iowa had 23 players dra ed from 2010-16, including four fi rst round picks (OL Bryan Bulaga, 2010; DE Adrian Clayborn, 2011; OL Riley Reiff , 2012; OL Brandon Scherff , 2015).

• Iowa and Alabama were the only two college football programs to have a fi rst round dra selec on following the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.

• Former Hawkeye Marshal Yanda (Bal more OL) is a fi ve- me Pro-Bowler (2011-15) and was named NFL All-Pro in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

• In NFL 2011 regular season sta s cs, former Hawkeye linebackers Chad Greenway (Minnesota) and Pat Angerer (Indianapolis) fi nished third and fourth, respec vely, in tackles. Greenway was named to the Pro Bowl in 2012 and 2013.

• Three former Hawkeyes were involved in the 2012 Super Bowl. DB Tyler Sash played for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, while LB Jeff Tarpinian was on the injured reserve roster of the New England Patriots. Former Iowa center Brian Ferentz, now is his fourth year as Iowa’s off ensive line coach, was New England’s ght ends coach.

• Former Iowa DB Sean Considine and OL Marshal Yanda won Super Bowl rings with the 2012 Bal more Ravens in the 2013 Super Bowl.

• Former Iowa LB James Morris (injured reserve) earned a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots in 2015. Former TE Tony Moeaki played for the Sea le Seahawks in the same game.

• Former center James Ferentz was a member of the 2016 Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.

• Entering the 2016 season, every Iowa senior star ng ght end (11) under Kirk Ferentz has been dra ed in the NFL or made an NFL team.

• All 11 members of Iowa’s star ng defensive unit in 2008 were either dra ed or signed to NFL free agent contracts following the dra s.

• Over the past 15 years, 140-of-157 (89 percent) of Iowa’s senior starters have been dra ed in the NFL or signed NFL free agent contracts.
