Title : A Foundation for Change: Leveraging Change Today to Prepare for the Future Thursday 23 July 2020 10.00 am-11.30 am Speakers: Patricia Gartland, CEO/Superintendent of School District No. 43 (Coquitlam), Metro Vancouver, BC, Canada; Stephen Whiffin, Director of Instruction and Chief Information Officer, Coquitlam School District, Metro Vancouver, Canada Description: The Coquitlam School District in Metro Vancouver, Canada has established an international reputation as a leader in K-12 technology-supported instruction and STEM education. Coquitlam has developed a framework for supporting technology-facilitated practice: The Conditions for 21

st Century Learning model. This presentation will introduce the model and explore how it encourages

systemic alignment of resources to support technology-facilitated instructional change and competency-based approaches to instruction and assessment. Through analysis of student engagement data, it will also review how the application of this framework helped the Coquitlam School District navigate current pandemic challenges. Finally, the presentation will consider the challenges that lie ahead in the emerging “new normal” and how we must prepare to adjust our strategies to ensure those challenges become opportunities for change. In particular, it will explore how now is the time to leverage new professional development strategies, hybrid- learning, alternative assessment approaches, and integration of STEM activities to prepare the teachers and learners of the future.

Title : Assessing Students throughout an Online Course Friday 24 July 2020 10.00 am-11.30 am Speaker: Ellen Watson, Senior Educational Developer Centre for Teaching and Learning, University of Alberta, Edmonton Canada Description: One of the most difficult shifts to teaching online is that assessment needs to be re-thought and re-taught! In the classroom, students' learning is regulated and easily monitored by the instructor; for example, we can walk past a desk and check to see how they are progressing. Unfortunately, when teaching online this becomes difficult since we are not always in contact with students. In this Master Class, teachers will be introduced to methods of engaging students in self- and peer-assessment as well as approaches that can be used to check students' learning of content they work through at home.
