MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR MARGOT MARSHALL

Rosedale is recovering from big rains with a spectacular breakthrough of the creek to the sea. Thanks everyone – especially Fran Stewart and Amy Skipper – for your photos!

We have welcomed a new person to our newsletter design team – Christie Cooper, who stepped in to layout giving Annie Shillington a break while she was flat out organizing her daughter Georgie’s wedding (at Rosedale!). Many thanks Christie!

We’re still talking to Council about traffic hazards and road signs – meanwhile a plea to everyone to

avoid parking on or near bends. Miller Avenue is a particular problem spot, often with tradies but especially at busy holiday times.

It’s committee election time again – see page 8 for the nomination form. And a reminder to everyone that membership fees are due – pay online and avoid the AGM queue.

Thanks again to Kit Tischler and Bardi Carter for organising the annual Sausage Sizzle and to Bill Mobbs and Cathy Holberry for hosting us in their garden. See you at the AGM!

WALKING TRACKS

We have progress on the status of our walking tracks! A great outcome from our submission to Council – they have now put both the Yowani steps and the Nuns Beach access paths as High Priority in their final Recreation and Open Space Strategy. Subject to external funding, but a big move from the previous no mention at all. The final strategy is on the Council website – see page 12.

You’ll also see a recommendation to build a new local park ‘in the Rosedale area’ as part of the housing estate proposed for Rosedale Farm and Bevian Park. It’s designated Medium Priority. The Open Space Strategy notes the need for consultation with the local community on the layout and content of the park and with Council Planners in relation to developer contributions.

We have a meeting with the Council General Manager and executive staff just before Easter – we’ll raise all these issues and update you at the AGM.

FUNDING UPDATE

We’ve received an update from Council on their application for a recreational fishing trust grant for the Yowani steps. A panel will soon assess all applications, send approved projects over $20,000 to another panel for review and a recommendation to the Minister. We’ll know the outcome in April/May so that successful projects can be implemented during the 18/19 financial year. Fingers crossed!

DEVELOPMENTS TO THE WEST

The development application DA305/18 for a 60 lot subdivision on Bevian Road is still under assessment.

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE DAVID BOARDMAN

WHAT A DRAMA!

How many people does it take to get the Sandy Rose catamaran off Rosedale beach?

Would you believe around 30?

At the end of their summer holiday, a family tried to tow their catamaran off the beach – and promptly got their Audi bogged in the sand. There were around 20 onlookers on the beach - many providing ‘helpful’ advice – and another 10 people pitching in to get their hands dirty. A 4WD came to the rescue – and almost got bogged too. Eventually the 4WD

managed to get the boat off the beach on its trailer – but it took many attempts to get the Audi out.

It’s been called ‘The Great Dismount Debacle of 2018’!

In the end, at least 12 Rosedale families were involved in this late afternoon community event, with some providing brawn, some brains, some spare parts, some humour, some 4WD, some atmosphere, some encouragement and even some much needed gin and tonics and beers.

WHAT TO DO

If you see a large shark, try to alert people who might be in danger. Report the sighting to the local surf lifesaving club, along with as much detail as possible (fin shape, body colour, snout shape and an estimate of its length).

Blood loss and shock are the biggest risk in a shark attack. Phone 000, stem blood loss with towels or clothing, use a belt or leg rope as a tourniquet above arterial wounds, and keep the victim warm and calm.

SHARKS OFF ROSEDALE? PART 2 PETER WARD

As I said last newsletter, at Rosedale you’re much more likely to be caught in a rip than attacked by a shark. Around Australia there are around 100 drowning fatalities a year, dwarfing the four or fewer fatalities from shark attacks. It's thousands of times more dangerous to drive on Australia's roads than to enter the water.

Why do sharks attack? Not all attacks on humans are a feeding response. Some attacks may be due to territorial behaviour or the shark's natural inquisitiveness - unfortunately the primary way some sharks investigate a strange object floating in the water is to give it a bite!

Conventional wisdom is that shark attacks are most likely at dawn or dusk, when predators are most active. But some research data disputes that idea.

We do know that shark attacks are more likely in murky water (when sharks might mistake humans for prey) and when prey species (such as schools of fish, seals and whales) are abundant. Regardless, if you swim with another person you'll reduce your chances of being taken by 50 per cent.

Drum lines and entangling beach nets are deployed to reduce shark numbers near areas of high population density, but not in our area. Since 2016 shark-spotting planes have patrolled the far south coast, and drones have been trialled for spotting. An acoustic buoy is anchored off Malua Bay to detect specially tagged sharks if they happen to pass nearby. NSW has tagged more than 100 sharks (mostly great whites). The Malua buoy has detected a bull shark several times in the last 18 months.

.....AND GREAT

TO SEE THE CREEK BREAK THROUGH

We’ve been fortunate this year that Council resources have allowed us to clean up around the carpark and spray Banksia Flats and the surrounding area for weeds. Walking Rosedale over Christmas I noticed many new weeds on the slopes between Banksia Flats and the Cabins –we will follow up our efforts here before the weeds spread back into Banksia Flats and become very difficult to contain. Dale Place reserve also risks becoming a seedbed for the surrounding area, so we will do more work to remove the weeds.

Among our other challenges:

• Beach sand dunes – Last year’s Easter plantings had an incredibly high survival rate (see p6) and this will help stabilise the dunes from wave erosion. We will do more planting this year to prevent sand blowouts from the beach.

• Saltwater Creek Lagoon – Despite the dark colour of the water from tannin stains, it’s a healthy ecosystem. Threats include the many weeds encroaching along the northern track and the proposed subdivision to the west.George Bass Drive dissects the drainage lines of the creek from the west -failure to protect the surrounds and drainage into Saltwater Creek could lead to devastating impacts on the Lagoon. We may need to landscape along the creek line to protect it from degradation.

• Sewerage pumping station – Council’s landscape plans will help soften the aesthetic of the building. Landcare wants to ensure the landscaping sets a benchmark for all future development the west of the road.

Members will hear more about Landcare’s activities at the AGM.

It looks as though we’ve dodged a fire bullet again this summer. Whilst there are still some weeks until the official end to the fire season, easing temperatures and recent rain have diminished the threat.

We have had 185mm of rain in January and February - 7 ½ inches in old money and well above the average! This means good growth ahead – and substantial plant growth and fuel in the run into next summer. So a reminder to keep your premises clear of fuel.

As I mentioned last newsletter, the Rural Fire Service is updating the Fire Protection Plan across the South Coast. They’re keen to work with groups such as our Rosedale community and implement a localised Community Protection and Operational Mapping Plan. The leaders of the South Coast RFS group will attend our AGM - come and hear what they have to say.

One thing we want to compile is a list of Rosedale’s various water storages that may be accessed in a fire. These could be your swimming pool, a dedicated fire

storage tank, a grey water reuse system or your re-purposed septic system.

Surprisingly no authority has this information to hand. In the event of an emergency, there is no way for firefighters to easily find out where they can get water to defend our properties should the mains be inadequate. I’d like to start gathering this information at the AGM - I hope you can help!
