The Christian Virtue of Hope – Part 3

When we talk about the Christian Virtue of Hope we don’t mean simply wishing for something. It isn’t like when we plan a picnic and we say, “Gee I hope it doesn’t rain.” Or, “I hope the Smiths can come.” Such use of the word “hope” merely expresses a desire. When it comes to God, of course it is good to desire God, but the Christian Virtue of Hope means much more than that.

There is a kind of hope that is common to everyone. St. Thomas Aquinas believed that on the natural level, hope is a passion of the soul, a means by which one proceeds earnestly and arduously towards some desired object whose acquisition is possible, but not certain, a matter of some difficulty, the movement toward some good not yet achieved.

Without such hope, directed and sustained effort would be impossible. Those who are deficient in this kind of hope fail to persevere in any continuous course of action. It is hope in this sense that sustains one’s effort to see through to the desired end the working out of any project or enterprise.

And then there is the Christian Virtue of Hope. This is similar to natural hope, the movement of the will toward a desired good whose acquisition is possible but not certain. But Christian Hope differs from natural hope in its foundation, its object and its effects.

The object of the Christian Virtue of Hope is God Himself. Hope is related to the other two Christian virtues of Love and Faith. The eleventh chapter of Hebrews tells us, “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” We haven’t seen God, just like we haven’t seen how a seed grows into a mature plant that can be harvested. But God is the object of Hope.

The Christian Virtue of Hope means that our souls are set upon God as our eternal Beatitude and our only true happiness. It means living your life as directed toward God and trusting in all of God’s promises. Hope means that we live as if we believed with certainty in the Gospel, that we believe God is our creator, that He is all powerful, all good and all loving, that He has forgiven us our sins in His Son Jesus Christ, that He created us for Himself, to live in His presence forever. Hope means living our lives in the knowledge that all of this is certainly true and that it will happen. It means living in real expectation of seeing God and enjoying Him forever, even though we will die one day. That is the Christian Virtue of Hope.

The Prayer List

Prayer is a gift from God. It is a wonderful way to lift someone in prayer who is sick, someone in need or for anyone with special intentions. The Parish prayer list is for such purposes, however, it can become quite big and the print becomes smaller. So that all may be included and properly fit within page boundaries, the prayer list will be renewed with a fresh start every first of the month. If you wish to place your name on the list once it is re-newed, please call the parish office. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.

The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

An adorer is needed for:

Tuesday 1:00 a.m.—2:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

martes 1:00 a.m.—2:00 a.m.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. The Parish Library is located in the Family Life Center, on Main Street, and has no regular “open” hours. We try to keep an interesting sample of the 1500 books in our library in the narthex book shelves. Please phone us at (830) 895-4230 to ask for a particular book, or to make an appointment to browse in the main collection. This week would be a good time to read about some saints – there are hundreds on our shelves. Books may be checked out by writing your name and phone number on the circulation card inside the back cover of the book, and leaving the card in the special box at the BooksToBorrow station. You may keep the book as long as you are using it. If someone else needs it, we will phone you. If you are ready to return it, but can’t find it, or if there is some other problem, please let us know, and we will take the book off our records. All our books have been donated – we have spent no church money on new books for at least the past seven years – and we will not ask you to pay to replace the book. In recent memory, we have been happy to have a phone call confessing that a book had been rained on (while in a car with the windows open). There was also a face-to-face confession from a youngster from a large family that a book had been lost at home. And another reader wanted to keep the book forever, and ordered a replacement for the library – and the school library! We have been glad to hear these news bits, so we can update our records.

NOTRE DAME SCHOOL GUARDIAN ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Today’s second collection is for Notre Dame School’s Guardian Angel Scholarship Program. All donations go directly to our school and provide tuition assistance to families in need who choose to send their children to Notre Dame Catholic School. The number one reason parents choose not to send their children to Catholic school is COST. Guardian Angel helps to make this choice more affordable for over 40% of our families.

I invite you to come and visit our school—you will be amazed at the tradition of academic excellence, the spirit-filled family atmosphere, and the Christian environment of serving others. You may wish to donate through the second collection today or go to our school website, www.notredameschool.cc and click on “On-line Giving”. Thank you for your generous donation in support of The Guardian Angel Scholarship Program.

Blessings in Christ, Sandi Killo, Principal Notre Dame Catholic School

donating, there is a constant need for new donations. Please consider giving up

a few minutes of your time to provide the gift of life for the least of our

with God and encourage them to allow Him to transform their chaos into a life grafted into Him…and something truly beautiful!

Location: Deer Creek Camp is a Christian summer camp and retreat center in Medina, TX. Visit their website, www.deercreekcamp.com, to see pictures and learn more about the great facilities. Boys and girls will stay in cabins in separate ends of camp.
