Last year, my mom spent a lot of time in the CCU at Aultman after her heart attack. After countless meetings with various specialists and social workers, I realized she may never recover. It was so confusing learning about palliative care, hospice, caregiver respite and more. We moved her from the hospital to the Compassionate Care Center at Aultman Woodlawn.
It was so much nicer than I could have imagined. The facility was quiet, the staff was extremely organized and accommodating, and for the first time in many days of being amidst the chaos at the hospital, I felt an unbelievable sense of peace. We hoped she would be able to enjoy a few days in this extraordinary facility.
Unfortunately, the next morning my mom showed signs of distress and clues to the nurses that she was dying. These nurses were so kind, thoughtful, understanding, sympathetic … they were saints! They walked us through the stages and urged us to ask questions, talk, whatever we thought my mom would like. Even though it was incredibly sad, it was also one of the most peaceful moments of life I have ever experienced.
I look back on the day very often. Sometimes I cry, sometimes, I smile. I will always miss my mom. And I know she would have been extremely happy knowing that she was in the facility that her best friend Carole Jackson made possible.
Fast-forward to this spring … my dad was discharged after 3 weeks in the hospital. Barely able to walk, no appetite, lots of swelling – he was in rough shape. He was already enrolled in Aultman Home Health, and was living in a nice assisted living facility, but I wasn’t sure that it was enough. So, I reached out to hospice and asked if they could evaluate him.
After their evaluation, he was quickly migrated over to hospice home care. I don’t know what I would have done without the nursing team! They were superb in getting my dad the right equipment, nutrition, sanitary items, etc. - keeping in mind that he wanted to stay in his apartment as long as he could. My dad looked forward to the visits with his caregivers and knew
them all by name. He was very honest with them and told them that he missed my mom and wanted to be with her.
I think he told them every day that he lived a wonderful life and was ready to go. The nurses let him talk about dying. Each one connected to dad on a different level – sometimes they talked about family, sometimes their hobbies, sometimes even politics. But they TALKED and LISTENED to him and made him feel important.
Whenever a change was taking place, the nursing team kept my brother and me in the loop and helped us understand what to watch for. Eventually, the decision was made to move dad to the Compassionate Care Center. We thought he had days, if not weeks, left to live … but he followed in mom’s footsteps and passed the next morning, as well.
My parents died one year, one day and one room apart. Without the hospice team helping me through each stage of the process, I don’t know what I would have done. I felt as though I had gentle wings surrounding me and guiding me through the process.
If you think a loved one is moving toward their final days, weeks or months, but aren’t sure what to do, call Aultman Hospice. Start a conversation with them. Get some literature and start reading. Have your loved one evaluated. Talk openly about dying and living. Be realistic in what is happening. Be prepared.
