    Ari Lehman from First Jason

As noted on the local shows page, Ari Lehman, who played a young Jason Vorhees in the first Friday the 13th movie, appears at Wolfies with his punk-metal band First Jason on the 21st. We’re told if you bring your hockey mask and ask nicely, you can probably get it signed......TC packed the sports page again so here’s where you’ll indulge me on the subject of horse racing. Two weekends in late November bring three more chances each to earn points toward the 2016 Kentucky Derby and Oaks: 21: Delta Jackpot/Delta Downs Princess (Louisiana) 28: Remsen/Demoiselle (New York); Kentucky Jockey Club/Golden Rod Thanksgiving weekend is also historically when the first of a series of pools in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens. AKA The Stupidest Bet in Sports, the Future Wager offers the chance to bet early and at (usually) better odds on Derby and Oaks contenders. Because there is a good chance your picks may not even make it to the big day, you’d probably do just as well to take your $2 outside and set it in on fire. And by “you,” I guess I’m really talking about me! About The Cover: Who remembers what George Bailey ordered at Nick’s—and what Clarence tried to order—in It’s A Wonderful Life? A double bourbon for George; and a flaming rum punch for Clarence (we’ll also accept Clarence’s follow-up: mulled wine, “heavy on the cinnamon”).

very so often we like to revisit an old friend, a classic. This month: Stella Artois.

Mild and pale, “Stella” is drinkable and easy to find. When I’m overwhelmed by choices or in an unfamiliar watering hole, I latch on to it. It’s like running into an old friend at a strange, bad party. I could just hug it and I do. Stella Artois is brewed in several European locales, including Belgium where it was first produced in the 1920s as a Christmas beer. A long-running ad campaign in the UK referred to it as “Reassuringly Expensive” but lest you think it’s too fancy, Stella also has a bit of a rep across the pond as the preferred quaff of louts and troublemakers. Or, as BestBeerHQ.com puts it, “scoundrels who you normally associate with football hooliganism and drinking at train stations.” Stella haters accuse it of skunkiness so mind how the green bottles are stored. As we’ve d i sappoint ing ly learned, light is no friend to your beer. 5.0% ABV154 calories.

The traveler that I was, and beer drinker that I am, I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy many a malted beverage in all sorts of pubs, clubs, bars and cafés—all around the world. And this was way before the Microbrew/Craft-Beer craze. In fact, the more that I think about it, there are so many great—and I really do mean great—beers from around the world (and regionally across the U.S); that the “home brews,” flavored with fruit and spices, are like soda-pop compared to what the legendary brewmasters have created for us over the years. And, accept it or not, craft brewers dump in way too much hops to mask their naivete about how to brew a naturally full-bodied beer. Beer has been around for a very long time. Perhaps as long as 12,000 years; with the first recipe written down by the Sumerians about 6,000 years ago. The people who built the pyramids drank it, as well as the ancient Greeks and Romans. German records indicate brewing as early as 800 B.C., and of course the Celts were drinking ale a very long time ago. Surprisingly, trendy bars are quick to carry the latest microbrews with a fancy name or label, but few carry many of the

most popular drinking beers from around the world. Here are several examples of good beers you rarely find in Indiana (And, no, these are not for IPA-ers): 1) Asahi Super Dry from Japan 2) Krombacher Pils from Germany 3) Brahma from Brazil 4) Boddingtons from the U.K. 5) XXXX Gold from Australia 6) Yuengling Premium from the U.S.

Clearly, there are hundreds more, like Holland’s Grolsch, China’s Snow, Japan’s Kirin or Sopporo, Germany’s Dinkelacker, Belgium’s Stella Artois (see review at left), Czech Pilsner Urquell, Ireland’s Harp, Kilkenny Cream and Smithwick’s Ale. Then there’s Yuengling Premium. It’s Premium, not Lager, that is actually America’s oldest beer. I know IPA drinkers and the citrus-hops lovers are popping their stoppers now. But relax, I’m not saying that all micros aren’t good, I’m just saying they’re not the only beers out there; and certainly many of them aren’t the best for “when you’re having more than one.”

    Cheers!
