Dear Parishioners, Our Parish and School Staffs wish you all the blessings of Christmas. As we celebrate the Word becoming Flesh and living among us, we know that the bond between God and humanity can never be broken, that Jesus became human so that we humans could become like God: merciful, compassionate, life-giving, all-good and holy. At Christmas, we take the opportunity to thank you for being part of our parish and school family and for allowing us the privilege of serving you. Together, we have faced the challenges of the past year and we are surprisingly stronger for it, thanks to all of you. May the peace and love of God be yours this Christmas and always!

Sincerely,

Monsignor Fran, Father Jonathan, Cecile Mantecon, Sandra Quintanilla, Ryan Bao, Linda O. Brisuela, Ryan Mau, Laura Quiroz, Esteban Lugardo

Parish

Mission Statement

Founded in 1777,

Saint Clare Parish is

an ethnically diverse

Catholic community of

faith, united in wor-

ship, discipleship and

service. In welcoming

immigrants, newcom-

ers and strangers, we

strive to live the vir-

tues of justice and

love, so as to be the

face of Christ in the

world, becoming in

Him a sign of unity

and an instrument of

God’s peace. Some of our youngest ‘angels’ Top left to right: Mrs. Meneze, TK Students, Ms. Jiang

Our Christmas Bulletin includes descriptions of various ministries and organizations that are associated with the parish. If you would like more information about – or join – this work, please reach out to the designated contact person (located on page 10). You are also welcome to contact the Parish Office for additional follow up.

Saint Clare School ___________________________

With your prayers, our dedicated teachers and staff partner with our committed families to form children of God to become thought-leaders, social justice advocates and compassionate humans. Saint Clare School was established in 1856 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur with support from the Jesuits at Santa Clara University. Our 165-year history has made our school a Santa Clara tradition, producing local leaders and philanthropists. Today, our graduates go on to Catholic high schools and universities, taking with them the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin, rooted in God’s love and working for justice. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds and we offer tuition assistance to make Catholic education accessible to all.

Parish Catechetical Program ____________________________________________

Our catechetical team all have proper and up to date credentials. Together we teach the “Finding God: Our Response to God’s Gifts” for Grades 1-6. Catechetical program. The program is formed by lessons, art, music, and sharing with family and others. This year we have classes fully in person or fully via Zoom on Sunday mornings. We walk the journey with our children who are preparing for Baptism, Reconciliation, and First Eucharist. We work closely with the families to understand their unique needs, so that all who are participating can move confidently towards achieving every child’s formation goal and beyond. Together we experience the love and participation that it takes to navigate our way toward a successful Catechetical year. For more information on how to enroll your children or on how you can help with our program, please contact our Catechetical Coordinator, Sandra Quintanilla, at [email protected].

Youth Ministry _________________________

Saint Clare Parish Youth Ministry involves young people from all walks of life. We are 6th-12th graders, cheerleaders, athletes, musicians, artists, creators, researchers, and so much more. What brings us together is a shared journey with Christ. As we journey with and to him, we share our gifts that God has given us with each other and the greater parish community through service, prayer, and community. As young people, we internalize our faith through the sacraments. Through the preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, we wrestle with the struggles of the world, look deeper into our relationship with God, and cultivate community among each other. We grow by walking along each other and learning about our faith and the world. Our yearly Confirmation program begins in January and ends in October and is open to all 8th-12th graders. To register and inquire, visit our website stclareparish.org/ymc. We wouldn’t be a youth ministry without fun! Learn about our random self-made activities throughout the year by following us on our Instagram (@stclare.ymc) or checking the bulletin every Sunday. In the past, we have done outdoor movie nights, “Christmas & Cocoa,” an Olympic/water day, and even a trip to Great America. We never know what’s next, so follow us! Our youth ministry is connected to a greater network that provides us opportunities for fellowship and faith. The Diocesan Youth Retreat is an annual retreat during the summer in Lake Tahoe that brings together more than 200 youth throughout the diocese. This is a great opportunity to experience the wider Church and make new friends. There are plenty of more events/opportunities regionally and even nationally we are looking into such as NCYC and On-Fire for the next year.

Liturgy of the Word for Children ___________________________________________________

The Liturgy of the Word with Children ministry is an opportunity for children (K-6th grades) to engage with each Sunday's readings with their peers led by a volunteer from the parish. Each Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. mass children are briefly dismissed to hear that day's readings at their grade level and participate in an interactive reflection on those readings. When they return to the community for the Eucharist they have a fuller, more age-appropriate understanding of what that Sunday's lessons were. Please invite your children to join in when you come to the 10:30am mass- no registration needed! Also, if you have middle school or high school age

children who are interested in volunteering to help with the readings or the reflection or if you are an adult interested in volunteering, please contact Claire Wemp at [email protected].

Liturgical Music __________________________

Our liturgical music ensemble plays and sings at the 7:30am and 10:30am Masses (and combines with our other parish choirs for multilingual celebrations like the Easter Vigil). Our ensemble is intergenerational, ranging from 2nd grade to retirement age. The only requirement to join is that you can read words - you aren’t required to read music or know how to play an instrument. We rehearse on Sundays from 11:45-12:45pm, which includes learning new songs (including several composed by our teen ensemble members) and practicing vocal techniques that you’d normally learn in a private voice lesson. Our goal is to build up future music leaders, which includes training singers to become cantors, coaching instrumentalists how to improvise, and breaking open scripture with the ensemble to make connections between the songs we sing and the readings we hear during Mass. Come offer your talents so that we can continue to make our music ministry thrive! Contact Chris Wemp

Peace and Justice Committee ____________________________________________

The Peace and Justice Committee of Saint Clare Parish serves as a community resource and catalyst to connect our faith with the work of social justice. We seek to Educate, Advocate, Act, Reflect.

Educate the community about Catholic social teachings. Advocate for the dignity and rights of all people, especially those who are marginalized

and socially, politically or economically disadvantaged. Act out our faith by creating and participating in opportunities – individually and in

community – to implement the Catholic social teachings of justice in service to others in need. Reflect on the biblical and theological foundations of Catholic social teachings to help

inform and discern current and future actions, advocacy and education efforts.

Since its founding in 2011 by Saint Clare parishioners, the Peace and Justice Committee has hosted annual Fair-Trade sales, Immigration Awareness Weekends, education efforts on Human Trafficking Awareness, Grateful Garment Drive, Stations of the Cross for global solidarity, peace prayer service, advocacy for the Catholic Climate Covenant and care for the earth. The committee has also mobilized Saint Clare support for the homeless through Village House Rotating Shelter program in the Bay Area. The committee has been on hiatus since the pandemic and is seeking to restart its work with the help of interested parishioners. If you would like to be a part of our work, please contact Anne McMahon at [email protected]

items and grocery store vouchers every month to over 200 men, women and children who live in our parish.

who live near El Camino Real. Thank you for all of your support. We could not do any of this without you. If you are interested in helping this effort, please contact Mick at 408-605-0506.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) ____________________________________________________________________

The RCIA Team welcomes those who wish to be baptized into the Catholic Faith as well as those who wish to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist). Those who are fully initiated in the Catholic Faith and who wish to learn more of their faith are welcome also. We ask Jesus, God made Flesh, to bless each of you with Grace, Peace and Joy this Christmas Season and throughout the New Year 2022

Saint Clare Parish’s Young Ladies Institute (YLI) ___________________________________________________________________________

We are honored to be a part of Saint Clare Parish, as we have been for almost 90 years. We are a Catholic women’s organization dedicated to prayer and works of charity. We meet once a month, the third Monday of each month, in the North Hall. We pray together and play together. Prior to Covid-19, we hosted bingo annually in the parish hall, and many members of the Parish attended the events. We welcome new members; please see our contact information in the Parish Bulletin. We wish the members of Saint Clare Parish, their families, and friends a Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

The Serra Club ________________________

The Serra Club fosters religious vocations, and has been active in our parish for many years. Serrans are dedicated Catholics who pray for the increase and perseverance of vocations to the Priesthood and the Religious Life. Serrans also encourage others to pray for vocations during various parish or diocesan activities. Example of these

events include the “31 Prayer Clubs”, attending an extra Mass each month for vocations, or praying for vocations on a daily basis. Whatever is the need to support Priests and Religious, members of Serra are ready to move ahead and follow the words of Saint Junipero Serra. His motto was “Always forward, never back.” For further information, contact Cathleen Lencioni (408) 248-6728

Saint Clare Hispanic Ministry _____________________________________________

Each weekend, we celebrate Mass– at 6:30 Saturday evenings and at Noon on Sundays – and all of the other sacraments in Spanish, thanks to the ministry of Father Jonathan, who is fluent in Spanish. Our catechetical program ministers to bilingual families and young women can prepare and celebrate Quinceañas here at Saint Clare. Each year, our Hispanic Council prepares our December 12 celebration in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which includes La Mañanitas, Misa (Mass) and a reception of pan dulce and chocolate. Mariachis and Aztec Dancers assist in this celebration.

Saint Clare Parish Portuguese Council ___________________________________________________________

Merry Christmas – Feliz Natal

Saint Clare Parish has welcomed the Portuguese Community with opportunities to worship and to celebrate our religious traditions, and lots of other activities that strengthen our community as part of our parish family. Since 1973, the Portuguese Community has celebrated Sunday Mass here in Portuguese. We are fortunate to be part of this parish family. The Portuguese Council organizes and serves various meals throughout the year, which are enjoyed by much of the parish and the larger Santa Clara community. Even in this time of “pandemia” the Council wishes our priests and all our brothers and sisters of the parish a very Merry Christmas, Feliz Natal. May Emanuel keep all Saint Clare Parish parishioners united in love.

Parish Pastoral Council /Parish “Synod” _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Saint Clare Pastoral Council is both representative of the diversity of our parish family and advisory to the pastor. Currently, the Council is under revision as part of the “Synodol Process,” which we will begin in January 2022. Our “parish synod” will reflect the processes of the synods planned in Rome and in San Jose. We will “walk together,” open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, dedicating ourself to “encounter, listening and discerning” where the Lord want us to go, what the Lord wants us to be in the years ahead.

Parish Finance Council ____________________________________

The Finance Council serves as a trusted advisor to the Pastor and helps with the management and stewardship of parish financial resources. We build the annual budget for every fiscal year and meet quarterly to monitor our progress. The Council is also responsible for supporting new initiatives/projects and complying with Diocese guidelines. While the Parish Finance Council does not have decision making authority, consultation is part of the process through information sharing, listening, and contributing to discussions. We welcome parishioners to join the Council and help ensure the long-term success of the parish.

Serving Other Catholic Communities of our Diocese/Santa Clara County ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our Parish also hosts San José Chinese Catholic Mission, the Cantonese Catholic Community, and the Japanese Catholic Community. These communities of faith celebrate Mass in our church, as well as using parish and school facilities for faith formation and social functions. We are pleased that Saint Clare is able to welcome these families and assist them in their growth as members of the Body of Christ.

Looking Ahead. . .to 2027 ___________________________________________

Finally, in January we will begin our countdown to our 250th Anniversary (founded in 1777 as Mission Santa Clara by Saint Junipero Serra). We hope to observe that anniversary in 2027 and, if you are reading this, we pray that you will be with us to celebrate that momentous occasion in the life of the Parish, our Diocese, and the Church in California.
