A LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

Death: the Endgame November 1 was All Saints. November 2 was All Souls. As a youngster I liked All Saints, but I hated All Souls. The weight of death was on the day. You could gain a plenary indulgence for a dead person each time you made a visit to the church and prayed for them. And you always thought of one more person and you’d feel guilty if you didn’t pray for them. So back in you went for another visit. You carried the burden of the dead on All Souls. It was a bit like Ash Wednesday: a black day. I suppose the real reason, the deep reason, is that it reminds us of death, and we don’t always like to think about that. But now and again we should think about it for no one is let off the grave. So a couple of times a year the Church reminds us and about forty times a year the funeral bell at St. Mary’s reminds us. The Church reminds us because it has something to say about death. But what it has to say isn’t frightening. On the contrary, it is comforting, reassuring and hopeful. If we had no religion, no faith, then death would be hope-less, but as an old prayer says, ‘Blessed be God who has placed hope in the grave’. So the Church is comforting and reassuring because it is sure of God’s love for us and it wants us to be sure of God’s love too, and so not to be afraid. God’s love for us should take away our fear. But now and again the Church would like us to use death to reflect on life, to make us thoughtful. And during November when we pray for the dead, maybe we’d think of the fact that this life isn’t infinite, isn’t eternal for any of us. We know that, of course, but we don’t always think of it. And what difference would that make? Well one of the Eastern religions says when you think about it, if you imagine you have died, it makes you more care-full - not careful, but care-full - aware of the love you have for your family and your friends, and it stops you letting little unimportant things come between you. It makes you more aware of the everyday miracles of love and care and beauty that bless us. When you think of the shortness of life, you live better, because time is limited, and you don’t want to waste it on hate or bitterness. But, of course, people are afraid, afraid of what is after death. Some people are afraid there isn’t a God, some people are afraid there is. We’re often afraid I think because we can’t imagine: we can’t imagine heaven and we can’t imagine God. We think we can see everything but in truth our sight is very limited. Someone said we are like a baby in the womb. If someone said to the unborn baby, ‘You can’t stay here. You’ll have to leave this place’. The baby might say, ‘But I don’t want to leave here; I’m warm, loved and happy here’. But the baby is born. And finds faces that love him, hands that care for him, children that play with him, welcome him, smile at him. He grows, enjoys, and loves. And when he learns that he must leave this place too. Again he might say, ‘But I don’t want to; I’m happy here. I’m loved and I love this world and my own people. All this I love and don’t want to leave. I don’t want to die’. But he dies. Is God, who created the love and beauty in the world he has left, suddenly going to become different? Oh No, God’s nature does not change, and God’s word is true. The baby, the man, will meet in his new life love and beauty, beyond all our imagining, and meet again all those he had loved, and lost in death. That’s what I believe. That’s the way I see things now. So I see November differently now. I still rejoice in All Saints, but I’m no longer afraid of All Souls. For November is really Easter - new life in heaven - achieved fully for All Saints, achieved certainly for All Souls, and promised with sure hope for ourselves. Have a blessed week. Father Aidan O’ Boyle

TRANSFORMATION & PARISH LIFE

We Welcome into the St. Mary

of the Woods Parish Family

Fiona Erin Lang, daughter of Adam & Kelly Lang

THANKSGIVING PRAYER How quickly the time passes. In June we are looking forward to summer. In July we are hurrying to fit in picnics, family reunions, beach days. By August, we begin to anticipate the autumn and fall sports seasons. September we look forward to the beginning school year and now it seems that part of the Halloween festivi-ties include looking forward to Thanksgiving. Before we get too involved in using the Thanksgiving holiday as the kick off for Christmas, let’s slow down a bit and truly focus on the power of Thanksgiving. Of course we all look forward to a bountiful Thanksgiving meal – good foods, tempting aromas, perhaps a fine wine, happy memo-ries of years past, and certainly a sweet or two to finish off the meal. Yes, we are thankful for all of it. But let us also remember to give thanks for our family and circles of friends who bless our lives. For every celebration – Fourth of July picnics, Father’s Day Bar-B-Ques, Mothers Day Dinners, and certainly Thanksgiving and Christmas – Fr. Patrick Cecil would include a few comments in his homily. He commented that if we were involved in a dispute (family or friends), let us use these happy times to initiate a recon-ciliation. It doesn’t matter who was “at fault.” YOU can be the big-ger/better person by instigating a peaceful move forward. Re-member Father Cecil in your prayers (RIP, November 2016), and take heed from his wisdom. Saying Grace before a meal is a beautiful custom. For the Thanksgiving holiday, many of us acknowledge the generosity and goodness God grants us. If you do not have a standing tradi-tion in your group for this custom, here is a suggestion that may get you started. Father all-powerful, Your gifts of love are countless and Your goodness infinite. On Thanksgiving Day we come before You with gratitude for Your kindness: open our hearts to concern for our fellow men and women, so that we may share Your gifts in loving service. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Gratitude through Giving

St. Sylvester Christmas Baskets

“In our gratitude to God for all that we have, we strive to share with others.”

Our sister parish, St. Sylvester is again asking us to provide Christmas baskets to their neediest families. We do this by providing “baskets” filled with food and gifts for their Christmas celebration. We hope to ena-ble these families to enjoy the Christmas season fully. Sign up in the lobby this weekend and for the next two weekends. Consider teaming up with a neighbor for a larger family. More information such as family member sizes and a list of suggested groceries will be provided. Delivery dates will be Saturday and Sunday, December 8th and 9th, from 9am to 3pm and directions to St. Sylvester are also included. Feel your heart and spirit sing as your act of charity manifests the true meaning of Christmas in the life of a needy family. For more info, call Mary Saffa, 773-775-8532.

PARISH LIFE

THANK YOU!!

The me has come to say THANK YOU to all of the Coaches and Athle c Board members who have been commi ed to the student athletes of St. Mary of the Woods. For the past 11 and a

half years, it has been my honor to serve as Athle c Director. It is a job I have come to love and the part I have loved the most is watching your sons and daughters grow up before my eyes. They have turned into young men and women who have gone on to many great things with their lives. Parents should be very proud! I have been involved in SMOW Athle cs for almost 30 years and am re ring as Athle c Director on December 31st, 2018. It is me for me to babysit my granddaughter and help my son with the arrival of another baby. I want to personally thank every coach who volunteered to coach and share their knowledge of the sport with the kids they coached.

The coaches make our Athle c Program what it is today. I also want to thank everyone who served as President of the Athle c Board. They worked very hard (mostly behind the scenes) to make sure every aspect of our program ran smoothly every mi-nute of every day. I want to thank every Athle c Board member who also volunteered and sat in countless mee ngs and did countless things without so much as a pat on the back. I want to thank the Teachers of SMOW for their dedica on and Commit-ment to teaching your kids every day. I have walked the Halls of SMOW for many years and I am in awe of the teachers. The school secretaries also deserve my thanks for answering my calls, making announcements at school and making me a copy or 2 when my printer at home was broken.

Last, but not least, I want to thank the parents for allowing me to be a part of their children’s lives. It was a Great ride!! Every-one along the way has been very suppor ve and it has meant the world to me. THANK YOU!! I also feel very lucky that Harry Comerford will be taking over for me as Athle c Director!! Harry has coached at SMOW for many years and will step right in seamlessly!! His email address is [email protected]. Dan Stapleton will be in charge of scheduling anything to do with the gym. His email is [email protected].

I am also re ring from being in charge of the Rectory Calendar. Mary Dosek, who has been very helpful in assis ng me, will be the contact person for anything that needs to be put on the Church calendar. Her email is [email protected].

Sincerely, Jon LeBaron SMOW Athle c Director

FAIR TRADE Coffee, Tea, Cocoa, Olive Oil

THIS WEEKEND IN PARISH RESOURCE CENTER

Racial Social Justice will be selling Fair Trade products just in time for your

Thanksgiving dinner! Delicious Fair Trade coffee (regular and decaf), tea, cocoa, and olive oil will be available to purchase after all the Masses. Fair Trade is a way of doing business that ultimate-ly strives to keep small-scale farmers an active part of the world marketplace and aims to empower consum-ers to make purchases that support their values. Fair Trade is a set of business practices voluntarily adopt-ed by the producers and buyers of agricultural prod-ucts and hand-made crafts that are designed to ad-vance many economic, social and environmental goals. These goals include raising and stabilizing the in-comes of small-scale farmers, farm workers, and arti-sans. Fair Trade also aims to aid in more equitably distributing economic gains, opportunities and risks associated with the production and sale of these goods. St. Mary of the Woods does not make a profit from the sale of these Fair Trade products. By selling Equal Exchange products we participate in Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Fair Trade Program.

ing. We’ll have a basket under the table in the Narthex to gather these items. Let’s remember those less fortunate as we travel this year. Your donation will benefit a local soup kitchen.

Thank you! Marcy Mahoney & Joyce Streff

Father James Martin’s Building a Bridge Over a series of the four Tuesday nights in November in the St. Mary of the Woods Parish Hall at 7:00 pm, parishioner Susan McGowan will facilitate a book discussion on Fr. James Martin’s recent book, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.

You may purchase a copy online at Amazon.com ($10.39 + s&h) or from other online book sellers.

Here are a few commentaries on the book:

“I affirm what Martin is doing...he has given his life for the service of the church. The Holy Father appointed him to a commission in Rome. I say to people: Make up your own decision, your own mind about him, by reading exactly what he wrote.”

~Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago

“A welcome and much-needed book that will help bishops, priests, pastoral associates, and all church leaders, more compassionately minister to the LGBT community. It will also help LGBT Catholics feel more at home in what is, after all, their church.”

What is the RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is a gradual process of conversion and initiation into the Cath-olic Christian community, providing individuals an opportunity to respond to His invitation to a new way of life in the Catholic faith. Grounded in a respect for the personal faith journey of each individu-al, the RCIA provides an extended period of prayer, study, and fellowship in which each individual has the opportunity to grow in relationship with God as well as the St. Mary of the Woods parish community.

Who is the RCIA for?

Persons who have never been baptized and wish to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Con-firmation, and Eucharist (Holy Communion) in the Catholic Church.

Persons who were baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eu-charist.

Baptized Catholics who have not completed their initiation; by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

How does the RCIA work? In the RCIA individuals reflect and learn about what is means to be a part of the Catholic Christian community – who we are, what we believe, how we celebrate and pray, how we relate with one an-other and with God. Based on the gradual transformation of each individual, the RCIA accompanies and celebrates the journey to faith of each individual. The process begins with a period of inquiry for those who have felt called to consider the Catholic faith. Here you will find an open space to ask questions about what Catholics hold and believe while meeting others striving to live Gospel values. Know that initial inquiry does not necessarily commit you to initiation. Where can I find out more information? We welcome people of all ages into our St. Mary of the Woods faith community. If you would like more information, please e-mail Deacon Chuck at [email protected], or call the rectory.
