You’d have to be in order to come up with these horrific scenes. So, I was ready for anything as Matthew Kirksey and I began the trek down to the office to greet Darren (yes, we’re on a first name basis). After our introductions, I began to think....hey, he seems pretty normal. That is, until he laughed. A laugh so creepy and malicious you’d think that he was the love child of Freddy Kruger and Rhoda (I have the prettiest mother). The students asked great questions, my favorite: “Are you a millionaire now?” Darren responded by stating that you can’t get into writing to make money and you have to write for the simple love of writing. Students were also given the opportunity to have their books signed. Despite my worries, we had a great turn out (sorry for the email stalking and begging), which solidifies the fact that we have a wonderful and supportive staff. Thanks!! As I began reading Lord Loss, the first installment in the Demonata series, I realized that Darren Shan must be a twisted freak! Oh, and then there’s the fact that he insisted on strangling us during the photo op (see images).

Darren’s creepiness seemed to work for him and he proved to be a great speaker. He had the students engaged as he used volunteers to perform a scene from the first Cirque du Freak novel. The students asked great questions, my favorite: “Are you a millionaire now?” Darren responded by stating that you can’t get into writing to make money and you have to write for the simple love of writing.
