God’s work. Our hands.
Every day is a walk with Jesus. We Christians believe life is spent in the presence of our Lord. Therefore, we can talk about every day as a day during which we walk with Jesus. Some days we feel Jesus’ presence. Some days we feel quite a distance from Jesus. We boldly proclaim that, regardless of how we feel, Jesus is there. Jesus walks with us every day.
As we who are Christ the King Lutheran Church consider our financial stewardship over the next few weeks, you will be asked to think about your use of money and possessions as a part of your walk with Jesus. This is most appropriate, because when Jesus walked this earth with his disciples, he often talked about money and possessions. If money was a part of Jesus’ first walk on this earth, it should be a part of our walk with Jesus today.
We believe that everything we have is a trust from God, given to us to care for and manage. What we do with our money is very much a part of our relationship with our Lord. This will be our focus in the coming weeks.
On Sunday, November 11th, each member of Christ the King Lutheran Church will have the opportunity to complete an giving plan card. On this card, each of us will indicate our plans for giving in 2013. This will not only be a plan for giving to Christ the King Lutheran Church, it will also be a plan for how we will walk with Jesus in the coming year.

Christ the King: A Community of Disciples “We are a Christian community practicing discipleship
as we worship, learn, and serve.”
Our simple mission statement of “We are a Christian community practicing discipleship as we worship, learn, and serve” calls us to engage in activities both inside and outside of our church walls. The diagram of three intertwining circles reminds us of the tri-fold mission to worship, learn, and serve, and demonstrates that by engaging in all three we grow as disciples. The cross in the center of the diagram emphasizes that Christ is the center of our very being, the perfect servant, and for whom we strive to be disciples.
With our affirmation of practicing discipleship comes the task of aligning our processes and activities with this mission. The most notable implication of this task will be a commitment to support and encourage citizens in their paths toward, in, and of discipleship.
Moving forward, you may expect to find a more consistent and personal invitation to worship, learn, and serve. It is with this intention towards developing a path toward richer, deeper spiri-tual life - one of discipleship - that all who walk through the doors of Christ the King will be mindfully and intentionally presented with:
• opportunities for worship, Bible study and theological discussion,
• opportunities to connect with others through small group interaction, and
• opportunities to serve Christ's world both within the church and outside the church.
Any effective organization must revisit and recommit to their mission and purpose from time to time. With this in mind, the Pastors and church council have discerned that the true and simple purpose of our church is to be disciples of Christ and to make disciples of Christ. We intentionally and actively move towards fulfilling this purpose by connecting with God, connecting with others, and connecting to the world through opportunities to worship, learn, and serve.

To Be Observed
November 4 Dating back to the
third century AD, the church in all its wis-dom has celebrated All Saints Day on
November 1st. This year the celebration will fall on a Sunday.
On this particular Sunday, we honor the tradition as we give thanks for all the beloved baptized in Christ, those among us and those who have gone before us. Today, our tender hearts remember loved ones who have died, and who now rest in the power and the promise of Christ’s resurrection from the dead.
During worship on November 4th we will give members and friends of Christ the King an opportunity to pause and remember a loved one who has died in the faith.
Two containers filled with sand and unlit candles will be placed on either side of the altar. Members and friends will then be invited to come forward, receive communion, light a candle, and place it in the containers.
When all have come forward, prayers of remembrance and thanksgiving will be lifted up.
Join us for a Thanksgiving Eve Service of Thanksgiving followed with a Pie-Luck!
Service at 7:00pm, Wednesday, November 21st, Pie-Luck to follow.
Bring your favorite pie to share during the
fellowship time. Everyone welcome.
Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday of the c h u r c h y e a r , N o v e m b e r 25th. This year we will have a special service of hymns and Scripture to take us through the whole c h u r c h y e a r
cycle. We’ll read and sing through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost.

Annual Fall Cereal Drive During the months of September and October, CtK collected dry cereal (boxes and bags) for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank.
This year’s goal was 325 boxes! As of October 30th we had collected 240 boxes (just short of the goal!
CtK collects cereal for the Food Bank all year long so keep a watch out for the sale ads and together we can make a difference in the lives of hungry families throughout the Gallatin Valley!
Bozeman Community Café Bozeman’s Community Café is located in the old Frontier Pies Restaurant at 302 North 7th in Bozeman. Hours of operation are from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. seven days a week and anyone can come and eat.
Customers are met at the door and seated by a “host”, then they’re greeted by a server and beverage orders are taken. Once the meal order is taken by the server, the “scoopers” promptly plate the meal requested. The seven volunteers, after all the customers are served, clean the restaurant in preparation for service the following day.
Christ the King is scheduled to serve at Bozeman Community Café the first Sunday of every month. CtK’s next service times are Sunday, November 4th and December 2nd from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Pastor Grant.
“Talking with Neighbors” Interfaith Forum For several years, local pastors have offered a monthly public forum held at Temple Beth
Shalom (2010 W. Koch Street, behind Albertsons) to promote interfaith understanding.
Rabbi Ed Stafman, Father Leo Proxell (Holy Rosary), Dr. Ruhul
Amin (MSU professor and president of the Islamic Center of Bozeman) and Pr. Jody McDevitt (First Presbyterian) and invited guest panelists choose topics in advance and each present 5-7 minutes on their tradition’s understanding of the topic. The panel then answers questions from the enthusiastic and ever-growing audience.
Panelists are committed to respectful listening to one another, without competition or debate. This format has led to some remarkable conversations and new understandings.
Additional topics for this year include:
Nov 7 -- Mysticism Dec 5 -- Favorite Holidays Jan 9 -- Does God change? Feb 6 -- Living in this world or for another Mar 6 -- Prophecy—open or closed? Apr 3 -- The Holocaust May 1 -- Evaluating our interfaith dialogue
All are welcome to these 1-hour forums, and you are welcome to bring your lunch along, being respectful of the temple by not having any pork or shellfish in your lunch.
Annual Thanks-4-Giving
Clothing (Drive) Giveaway The 5th Annual Thanks-4-Giving Clothing Giveaway will take p lace Saturday, November 17th from 9am-3pm and Sunday, November 18th from 9am-1pm at the Willson School gym.
What started five years ago as a small Hawthorne School project, has now turned into an annual Bozeman community event that redistributes literally tons of clothing.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, schools throughout the area collect gently used clothing, infant through adult. The clothes are then made available to everyone during the two day Thanks-4-Giving event to be held again in the Wilson School Gymnasium.
(Continued on page 6)
November 2012 Christ Tidings 6
Thanks-4-Giving is a great example of our community’s commitment to reuse and recycle as well as encourage giving. Every parent has clothing their child grew out of before wearing out. Why not see these clothes being used rather than taking up space in your home? This is a great opportunity to look at your closets and see what clothes, shoes and outerwear you and your family no longer need or are using.
Gently used items should be sorted and labeled according to gender and size. Donations will be accepted this year at the Willson School Gym, South 5th Avenue entrance, Monday, November 12 through Friday, November 16th, from 9am-8pm.
Everyone is invited to come and take items that their family can use. Thanks-4-Giving is a collaboration of area school volunteers and students.
Health Cabinet Offering Blood Pressure Checks CtK’s Health Cabinet will be sponsoring monthly blood pressure checks on the second Sunday of the month (Nov. 11th), immediately after worship (in the office reception area).
Heather DeGraw, RN, and a member of the Health Cabinet, will be doing the readings Sunday, November 11th. No appointments necessary, just drop by the church office after worship.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet Thursday, November 8th at 7pm in the Hastings Coffee Shop. This ministry has not only
brought folks together to pray, stitch and fellowship, but has blessed many individuals with prayer shawls for a variety of reasons,
including illness and hospital stays, death of loved ones, graduations, etc. Please contact Jeanette Hughes if you have any questions: [email protected] or 570-7368. Or just show up at the coffee shop ready to knit or crochet, patterns are available.
Brawl of the Wild A special offering for Campus Ministry in the Montana Synod will be received on Sunday, November 11th. Put your donation in your team’s favorite cup—Cats or Griz—as we begin celebrating Cat-Griz week…
Regardless of the outcome of this fun competition, donations will be split equally between UM and MSU campus ministry sites.

On Turning 80 . . . by Dr. Jerry Johnson
Thursday, October 18th was very much like the rest of the month, sunny, warm with crisp mornings and spectacular fall colors. The difference was it was my 80th birthday—you might say, “What a difference a day makes.” I awakened early at nature’s call, a reliable marker of age, and rather than dozing off, pondered this epoch. Margaret asked me if I am depressed about turning 80. Actually, depression is a factor in aging. Some look back on a life wasted—that’s really tough. Unquestionably life is a series of losses ending in death, and that makes daily life more of a struggle. To say I am pensive, reflective and thoughtful is certainly true. It’s a stark reminder that the clock is ticking, and with things to accomplish I’d better get my act in gear.
Upon retirement in ’98 I quoted a saying from the Masai in Tanzania about lions and gazelles on the Serengeti. The lion is up with the sun to hunt for food. The gazelle is up and running to avoid being food. Either way they are up with the sun. That was my goal. I wanted to write, do art and learn violin—a famous woman violinist said one needs to learn as a child; second childhood would have to do for me. Since then I’ve written about 130 essays, some poetry and many letters to the editor. I’ve done pastel portrait art and illustrated my book, but have suffered art block for two years. I took violin lessons for five years—now it mostly gathers dust. On occasion I scratch out a tune. I’m generally satisfied with my writing, could be a fairly good artist, and a middling violin player. Unfortunately time rolls on and I feel I’m wasting my waning years. Renowned physicist, Freeman Dyson, 88, said when he was young he could focus on a single problem nonstop for a week. Now he says he is limited to two hours a day of serious work which is not enough. Amen to that.
Serendipitous? The October Discover magazine deals with the End of Youth—an aging world challenging Medical Science, turning society upside down—the “Gray Tsunami.” Included were two articles about the brain and one on immortality on earth (who wants it?). The real eye opener was behavioral psychologist Robert Epstein’s article, “Brutal Truths About the Aging Brain.” By 80 the brain has shrunk 50% to the size of a 2-3 year olds. “The sad truth is that even normal aging has a devastating effect on our ability to learn and remember, on the speed with which we process information, and on our ability to reason.” We do
have the edge on experience, but by 85 half of us have Alzheimer’s to some degree which started at least 30 years earlier. With the global population expected to exceed 400 million by 2050, the aging brain will become an increasingly big headache for humankind. My most frustrating problem is not finding a word or name when I want it—having a spouse is a definite advantage. Deborah Burke, psychology professor at Pamona College, has studied this for over 20 years and says, “It is the most irritating and disturbing cognitive problem reported by older adults and we don’t know the cause.”
The outlook is grim. Concerning all of the above, “worried baby boomers have inspired whole catalogs of brain-fitness books and services. This has been good for publishers, vitamin companies and computer game designers, but probably bad news for boomers themselves.” Gerontologist Elizabeth Zelinski (USC) says bluntly, “There is no evidence anything works.” A PBS show on the brain this past week, however, offers some hope. Brain scans while performing a mental task light up specific areas. Over time these areas enlarge suggesting the brain can grow with stimulation. Study is on going. The best bet seems to be lifelong exercise, healthy eating and good genes.
One of my friends says he feels like 20 until he moves, another says he exercises every day and still hurts. Both are 80. I think I have discovered a new diagnosis as I haven’t heard it mentioned before. I’d call it Fibromyalgia of the Aged. My plan is to hang in, do the best I can, nag Margaret to stay healthy, and try to remain inspired by my five friends and mentors over 90. One cooks and writes poetry, one hikes and plays tennis and particularly, a 97-year-old lady who drives, is a sharp dresser with high heels and all, and looks 10 years younger.
Dr. Johnson graciously writes this column for CtK and his former congregation in Reno. He welcomes your comments and discussion with him of any of these topics.

Hurricane Sandy
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
From the Caribbean to the northern Atlantic coast, millions of people have evacuated their homes and communities due to Hurricane Sandy. Strong winds and torrential rains have led to flooding and mass destruction. The storm sent trees crashing down and left neighborhood streets looking like rivers.
Through ELCA Disaster Response, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is responding in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the Caribbean, through our global church partnerships, we are providing basic needs such as food, water and shelter. Throughout the United States we are working hand-in-hand with synods and ministry organizations, who are experts at outreach in their communities. We need your help. Your designated gift will be used entirely (100 percent) to help those whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted by this disaster. Wondering what else you can do? Please share this information with your congregation and inform others of the ELCA’s response. On Sunday, November 4th, there will be an informational insert in the Sunday bulletin with more information on making donations to help those most affected by this storm. Please pray for all those affected by this terrible storm and for the relief workers who are at work on their behalf. Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely,
The Rev. Daniel Rift Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
