Choose Action on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Novem-ber 18 to 22. Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying

identify forms of bullying

identify roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or the trusted advocate

determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment

demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities

Every school has a Climate for Learning and Working Team which is required to develop a Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan as part of the School Success Plan. Also, every employee who is involved in the care and service of students is obligated to report in writing to the school administration any action for which the principal must con-sider suspension or expulsion. Bullying is an offence that must be considered for suspension. Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on September 1, 2012. For more information, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html

In this school year, we will be carrying on our tradition of supporting charities that have links close to our hearts. This year, we are supporting the Ride to Conquer Cancer (benefitting the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto). Kicking off our fundraising will be a dime drive, lasting for the duration of the month of No-vember. Starting Friday, November 1, please help us collect dimes by sending your child with as many dimes as you are able to provide. Each class will be collecting as many dimes as they can. The goal is for each class to fill a small water bottle with dimes, which altogether is valued at approximately $100. This will continue for the rest of the month, so please get rela-tives and friends involved – let’s make this count! Although we are calling this a dime drive, we will be accepting other coins too (this is charity, after all) so please feel free to send in any other loose change that you wish to donate. Teaching our students to care continues to be of the utmost importance to us and we thank you for your ongoing support of charity.

Terry Fox gave the world much more than can be counted in dollars and cents. He was the ordinary guy who responded to his troubles by reaching out to help others. In doing this, he became a symbol of hope and courage to millions of people throughout the world. On September 27

th, we attended a very moving assembly celebrating the persistence and

courage of Terry Fox, before heading out for the 9th Annual Terry Fox Walk.

Cancer has touched the lives of so many people around the world, even here at Stanley

Mills. By bringing in your toonie, you played an important part in finding a cure for this terri-

ble disease. Together we raised $744.77.

Thank you, Stanley Mills!

Operation Christmas Child is an International Relief Agency which enables caring people

to share with children in the far corners of the world. On Friday, October 25th, Stanley Mills took a first-

hand look at how we can be a part of this wonderful effort by sending our love and concern to a child through the simple gifts enclosed in a shoe box. Parents and students may remember that our school participated in this charity last year and collected 80 boxes which were sent to help to less fortunate children around the world. Each class will be provided with a shoe box and will decided the age and gender of the child for whom they will fill the box. Students are invited to contribute an item or items towards filling the box. Cash donations are also welcomed to finance the shipping of our show box gifts. The list below contains suggestions but is definitely not exhaustive. All donations must arrive in class by Wednesday, November 13

th so that at the end of that week they can begin their journey to the

ends of the globe.

Gift Ideas:

Toys- small cars, trucks, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, harmonicas, yoyos, skipping ropes, puzzles, Slinky, etc. School supplies- pens, paper, pencils, solar calculators, colouring books, crayons, markers, etc. Hygiene items- toothbrush, soap, comb, brush, washcloth, etc. (no liquids) Other- hard wrapped candy or suckers (no gum, chocolate or chewy candy), t-shirts, caps, sunglasses, hairclips, gloves, mitts, toy jewellery or something that says CANADA on it. OR a cash donation (towards the $7.00 voluntary suggested donation per box).

What not to include:

No used items

No breakable items No items that can freeze or melt

No food / toothpaste

(except hard candy and suckers) No items that can scare or harm a child

Through the power of a simple gift we can make a world of difference!

Take it OUTSIDE, Stanley Mills!

Last month we celebrated Take Me Outside Day on October 24th. We wanted to support Colin Harris’ goal of getting kids to spend more time in ”The Great Outdoors”. Students were involved in so many outdoor learning activities, from nature sketching to documenting signs of fall, from exploring rocks to

collecting nature items...it was truly an amazing day!

Students had such positive things to say about the outdoor learning experience: “The fresh air helped my brain to think better.” (Khush, grade 2)

“I didn’t know there was so much to learn out there!” (Gurtej, grade 5) “WOW! SO FUN!” (Dilroop, Kindergarten)

Many classes are also looking forward to spending more class time along the trail throughout the year as

we work towards our school-wide Classrooms Without Walls project.

You can connect with nature at home, too! Here are some ideas to get you started: Visit the TMO website and sign up for your family’s own Take Me Outside Challenge! takemeout-

Need help in math? Free tutoring now available online

Math students in grades 7 to 10 can access live, interactive online math help by visiting www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Homework Help is free, real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers. Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. for individualized confidential math tutoring. There are discussion rooms for each grade where students can join and see what ques-tions other students are asking, watch the tutors draw on the whiteboard – and ask their own question for on-the-spot help. Students will also find 24/7 discussion rooms, video lessons and commonly asked questions. Other online math resources include math games and a virtual locker, where students can save their work. Homework Help is a project funded by the Ministry of Education.

Help your child prepare for tests

Many students will become anxious at the thought of writing a test. Anxiety about an upcoming test can affect a child's behaviour, thoughts and actions. Here are some ways you can help minimize anxiety at test time: Organize & Prepare

Encourage your child not to leave assignments, studying and homework to the last minute. Schedule time for review and work on assignments each day. Establish a regular time of the day for homework, studying etc. Make the home a homework-friendly environment where learning is regular routine. Remove distractions like the television, stereo, telephone when studying. Tell your child to make sure tests and due dates are marked in their agenda.

Practice

Encourage your child to think about ‘what, when, where and how’ when preparing/completing as-signments.

Develop practice tests and help them anticipate questions. Review previous exercises. When appropriate, encourage your child to pair up with a friend to review information and brain-

storm. Build learning into family activities— suggest keeping a journal, writing a report or a news article

about family events, outings or trips. Be in the know

Check out the curriculum for your child’s grade level (available as PDF files at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum)

Ask your child’s teacher about major topics studied and how these topics are structured— home-work, assignments, exercises

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 31, 2014

Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI)? For the 2014-15 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Registration for FI will be done through an online registration form that will be available on Nov. 22 at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration. What is the FI program like? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the pro-gram? How can you tell if it is the right choice for your child? One way to help answer these questions is to attend the information meeting at the FI school your child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear about the program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose children are now in the program. A parent information night will be held at each FI school in Peel on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. Registration process A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are avail-able for students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline ex-ceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a lottery system will be used to identify students gain-ing entrance into the grade 1 FI program. All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a lottery and assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining stu-dents will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to participate in the lottery, and for more information about the lottery and waitlist proc-esses, visit www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration. How to get more information Visit the Peel board website—www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration. Call Carberry Public School at 905-458-6771. Visit the Canadian Parents for French website at www.cpfont.on.ca.
