How Should SheepValue Shepherds

Cameron Triggs, Pastor of Youth and Young Adults

You probably have prejudiced opinions about shepherds. Today, in the world and perhaps in the church, the word ‘shepherd’ triggers certain visuals to the human mind. Such visuals may include a man in a robe amongst knee-length wheat or grass gently petting a sea of sheep. This shepherd is friendly, congenial, and to say the least “non-threatening”. But is that the type of shepherd we see in the Bible? Is that the kind of shepherd Jesus is imaged after? Should this image of a shepherd form how we view our “shepherd”/pastor? In one sense, shepherds were friendly, congenial, and “non-threating” to the sheep. But on the other hand, shepherds were tough, rustic, and protective. The rod and staff of a shepherd could run away fear and instill peace in the face of enemies (Psalm 23:4). The hands of a shepherd would kill bears and lions in defense of the sheep (1 Samuel 17:34-36). Yes, the biblical shepherd even lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). So what would be the most relevant, potent, and coveted blessing for a fold of defenseless animals? What more could sheep ask for but a shepherd who is will-

ing to feed, lead, protect, and yes, even die for the flock? God demonstrates His favor and blessing to His beloved sheep by giving them shepherds after His own heart (Jeremiah 3:15). God graciously supplies steady and stable shepherds to watch over His blood-purchased sheep (Acts 20:28). At Shiloh, we are blessed with several shepherds. Our Senior Pastor, HB Charles Jr., certainly serves the sheep here with fearless passion and sincere devotion to Christ. Our pastoral staff and associate pastors sacrifice much to lay down their lives for the sheep. God has been gracious to us Shiloh. How will we respond? Without shepherds, the sheep will go astray. Without shepherds, the sheep are marked as prey. May God grant us thank-ful hearts for the shepherds who feed us the Word, lead us through the world, and protect us from the wolves. So the next time you think of a shepherd think of this: A man, called by God, ready to fight for the life of his sheep. Think of a man prepared to war for your soul. Think of a man ready to lay it all out in the pulpit so his hands would be clean of innocent

blood. A shepherding pastor is not merely a community leader or an articulate enter-tainer. He is a man prepared to protect the priceless sheep of God. Such a shepherd is worthy of honor, respect, and loyalty. How should sheep value shepherds? Answer: the same value one would put on life itself; for without them danger, death, and the demonic would have us all run astray. Praise God for sheep with a shepherd!

“Without shep-herds, the sheep will go astray. Without shep-herds, the sheep are marked as prey.”

Ministries of MercyWritten by: Timothy J. Keller

This book is available in the Bookstore for $10.00.Reviewed by Daryl Jones,

Chairman of Deacons

In his book, Ministries of Mercy, The Call of The Jericho Road, noted author Timothy J. Keller uses the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 - 37) as his backdrop to give a practical, biblically based structure to the ministry of mercy. He lays out step by step, avenues we as Christians can take to show mercy to those in need. We are commanded in scripture to help the poverty stricken, the needy, fam-ily members, those of faith, the elderly, the homeless, prison inmates, those who are our enemies, and unbelievers. Can you find yourself somewhere in the following statements: “Oh, come on now, Lord, let’s be reasonable. We know we are to help out the unfortunate, but just how far do we go?” “You don’t mean we should pour ourselves out for anyone! Doesn’t charity begin at home?” “I barely have enough money for myself!” “Aren’t many of the poor simply irresponsible?” Many Christians believe that Deacons are solely responsible for the caring of those in need. It was the complaints of the Hel-lenistic widows who were being neglected in the distribution of resources, in favor

of the Jewish widows, that caused the apostles to establish what was to become the office of Deacon. They rightfully wanted to devote their time for teach-ing and preaching, but were moved with compassion to meet the physical needs of their people. Keller lists the attributes of servanthood to emulate: “A Deacon does not serve for thanks. Servanthood begins where gratitude and applause ends. A servant serves without pride. The spirit of a Deacon is that nothing is too small to do to serve another...a Deacon will do it all.” This is the attitude Jesus expects of us all when we minister to those in need. “Mercy did not begin with the Good Sa-maritan parable. The first act of mercy is recorded in Genesis 3:21 after the fall of Adam and Eve, where God provides them with animal skins to cover themselves.” Because of their disobedience, they were put out of Eden, and placed in a hostile environment. Even though the first couple disappointed God, He still had compas-sion. Keller begins the fascinating journey into the definition of true mercy minis-try by issuing “The Call to Mercy”. He debunks antidotal beliefs and fears many have about caring for those in need, wherever they are found. They were told to give to the poor until their need was gone (Deut.15:8,10). God expected His people to be like Job; “I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.” (Job 29:16) Keller also delves into the angsts and guilt many feel for being fortunate, and not actively helping those in need. He answers those questions with scripture saturated, practical applications, as to how the Lord Jesus commands those with resources to minister to those less fortunate. The Lord does not expect you to give all you have

to meet the needs of others. But He does lay out principles you need to govern the wealth He has allowed you to be a steward of, so that your “vats” remain full. “No matter what resources the local, state or federal governments may provide, only a true church of Jesus Christ (and its mini-churches, the Christian homes) can minister to the whole man!” He also brings home the need for the Church to be a central part in the com-munity in which it resides. It has to be a beacon of light for the ministry of mercy. Church size does not matter. Each church can provide resources, whether they are fi-nancial, material, or relational, to meet the great needs of the community. It is hard to feed the soul of a man when his physical needs are lacking. Only the church can explain the gift of salvation while meeting the needs of the people. It lends itself to discipleship because we are demonstrating love while fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19). Jesus judges all of us on the basis of our ministry to the hungry, naked, homeless, sick and imprisoned. (Matt. 25: 31) He will recompense those who minis-ter to His people. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of this book. It is transformative. It has made me a better Christian, refreshed my walk as a Deacon, and assured me that Jesus wants us all to meet the needs of His people. Who is my neighbor? Anyone in need.

CELEBRATingYOuR AnniVERSARY

By Donald Lewis, Jr., Pastor of Christian Education

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” Proverbs 25:11

For the past VI years we have been fortunate to have words fitly spoken by a Pastor whose message mirrors his walk and who has a heart for exposing us to the Word of God. Although there have been times when your facial expressions tell of your concerns, we know that you only want God’s best for the sheep to which Christ has made you under-shepherd. We are blessed and excited that God would think so much of us to give us a Pastor like you!!!

Pastor, we not only appreciate your faithful proclamation, but also your personal touch. It’s wonderful to see how you spend time with members following the service, ministering to their needs and praying with them. Paul said “be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” thanks for the example and leadership of Christian service.

We want to thank you Pastor for investing a portion of your life’s ministry here at Shiloh. Unlike many vocations, we often cannot step back at the end of the day and visibly “see” what has been accomplished. However, I do know that God is keeping an accurate record of our service and one day He will reward accordingly. Until then, please know that we are praying for you and believing that God’s best for you is yet to come.

Enjoy the day Pastor, may you be blessed with a big steak and a good nap, knowing that your labor is not in vain.

The book of James has a well-deserved reputation for providing practical advice, yet it also con-tains challenging teachings on wealth, prayer, healing, and the relationship between faith and works. Through clear exposition of the biblical text this guide helps us understand James as a stirring exhor-tation to fruitfulness—reminding us of the necessary connection between genuine faith and heartfelt obedience. Christian growth traCkAttributes of God by Steve LawsonInstructors: (coed) cecIl Jones/Quenton davIs

Misconceptions about God abound. But they don’t have to. God has revealed His character in Scrip-ture, illuminating the attributes that define Him. While we, being finite creatures, can never truly com-prehend everything that God is, we should study what He Himself has said. This series articulates a biblical understanding of God that can affect every aspect of our lives. Do you ever feel like your prayers have no power? In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gives us all the prin-ciples necessary to have a “journey into powerful prayer.” Prayer is the most important thing we do because prayer can do anything God can do. Real Worship: It will Transform Your Life by Warren WiersbeInstructors: (coed) donald leWIs/george BoldrIdge

Real Worship examines the nature of Christian worship, discusses idolatry, witness, spiritual warfare with Satan, transformation, why worship is important and the importance of taking worship seriously, planning balanced worship, as the author also defines the essence of worship and discusses the key issues surrounding this often controversial topic within the church.

“Our inaugural Prison Ministry outing was Saturday 10/25. It was a spirit filled session. Pastor West Wil-son started us off in grand fashion! It was a humbling experience for us all. This was the first prison ministry from Shiloh in over a decade.”

If you would like to join this min-istry, please send an email to our coordinator Ed Gordon at [email protected] or call (904) 349-2108.

Our mission is to serve our community and the world in Christian love. In doing so, we believe in the need for com-munity based service programs. These programs are facilitat-ed by local agencies that provide a variety of programmatic and enrichment opportunities. We are celebrating a tremendous 2014 at the Shiloh Outreach Center. The volunteers who push the strategic plan of out-reach services to the community are making a great differ-ence in the lives of the children, youth and families. The Shiloh Outreach Center is committed to linking com-munity resources and specific expertise to effectively address the needs of the unemployed and underemployed people throughout our community. We continue to focus on Educa-tion and Employment Training as two major components of our current services. Our clients have made great contributions toward completing their tasks and assignments to enhance their education. Our volunteer staff and core team make a tremendous effort every day to assist those who come into the Outreach Center seek-ing a better quality of life for themselves and their families. Friday, October 24th, we celebrated our 4th annual gradua-tion on Shiloh’s campus. Our keynote speaker was Profes-sor Roger M. Groves, Florida Coastal School of Law. Our theme: Education in the Twenty-First Century. During this celebration, we introduced our guest to our new program in collaboration with the Beaver Street Enterprise Center. De-veloping Entrepreneur Skills as a Path to the Future. We’re grateful to Mrs. Jackie Perry and her staff at Beaver Street Enterprise Center for partnering with our Outreach Program

in recent months and for providing us with the opportunity to network with top leaders and entrepreneurs in the com-munity. Mr. Sammy Wilson, who is a part of the Shiloh Outreach Center planning committee, developed the training curricu-lum for our first Career Seminar Entrepreneur Workshop on August 14th. This Workshop - “So You Want to Be an Entre-preneur” - took place at the Beaver Street Enterprise Center. The Youth Enrichment Program continues to be a success under the leadership of Mrs. Latasha Kelly-Wright. We are partnering with the residents of the Centennial Townhouses Community on Shiloh’s campus one Saturday a month for the academic and enrichment program from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Our mission is to enrich and empower children and youth to be all they can be to the glory of God. We believe in serving the entire family. We also started a Bible Study Fellowship on Tuesday June 3rd, at the Centennial Townhouses West-Recreation Center (126-1 North Broad Street). The Bible Study Fellowship is every Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. We are presently studying the meaning, the message, and the God of the Bible from the book of Mark. As a result, many of the families are attending and joining Shiloh. Shiloh, I’m confident that we will see the Lord accomplish much more in strengthening families through the efforts of the Shiloh family, Shiloh Outreach Center and our partnering agencies. Thanks for the privilege to serve.
